  • Nipigon Lookout

    13. Juni 2023 in Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Left Ear Falls this morning, and within 10 minutes, we saw a cow moose with her two newborn calves. Unfortunately, they ran into the bush before I could get a picture.

We are settled in Nipigon for the night. We are having a beer before we bbq supper.

Climbed the lookout tower foolishly in flipflops, but we, or I should say, I made it up and down without incident. Our ClassB looks as tiny as it actually is!

  • Blind River

    14. Juni 2023 in Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Brrr. Chilly starting out this morning, only 9 degrees C!

Stopped to see Aguasabon Falls & Gorge. Beautiful, but the mosquitoes were horrific!

Had lunch in Wawa, home of the Wawa Goose - one of the most photographed monuments in North America and Stompin' Tom Connors sang about her! LOL

It was my turn to drive, and wouldn't you know it? Five minutes down the road, the fog rolled in! I don't know which was worse - having to navigate through the fog or Garry filching and gasping beside me!

Anyway, we made it to Blind River. Boondocking at the harbour. Hoping for a beautiful sunrise tomorrow.

  • Happy Father's Day

    18. Juni 2023 in Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

We are spending the next few days with our friends, Gib and Nancy, on an island on the Ottawa River. Nancy's grandfather bought the island in the 1920s and built the cottage in the 1940s. Many of the original furnishings, dishes, etc. are still here. Very cool.Weiterlesen

  • Fitzroy Harbour, Ontario

    19. Juni 2023 in Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Well, our last day has come to an end.

We spent the day on the river seeing the sights. The Quyon Ferry, which operates on the Ottawa River between Quyon, Quebec and Ottawa (Fitzroy Harbour), Ontario, has been in operation for well over 100 years...such history!

Then, back to the island for refreshments and an excellent meal!

Tomorrow we will travel to Ottawa, for a city tour.

  • Ottawa

    20. Juni 2023 in Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Ottawa, the capital of Canada, is a beautiful city located on the banks of the Ottawa River. Queen Victoria renamed Ottawa from Bytown to its current name in 1855 and it was declared the capital of Canada in 1857

Parliament Hill draws almost 3 million visitors annually. Interestingly, the flag on top of The Peace Tower is replaced every week day. The used flags are sent free of charge to any Canadian citizen who requests one; however, the waitlist is over 100 years.

There were many amazing museums, monuments and statues.

Byward is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. I was successful in finding the artist who sketches scenes on large maple leafs. I bought one of the parliament buildings.

  • Montreal (not quite)

    22. Juni 2023 in Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Left Ottawa, stopped at the St. Albert Cheese Factory for their world famous cheese curds (not sure if they were as good as Wisconsin's but they were tasty) and headed to our friend's, Bill and Jocelyn, home, just south of Montreal for a few days.

They are in a lovely place, although I can not believe how many bullfrogs are around their place and how loud and strange they croak - kinda creepy!

Anyway, planned to visit Montreal with Bill and Jocelyn as our tour guides but our A/C started making an awful racket, so instead, Bill helped Garry fix it, while Jocelyn and I visited several of the local markets. Win, win!

Had great company, delicious food (including a fish fry), and a few bottles of wine!

  • St. Andrews

    25. Juni 2023 in Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

For once, the forecast was wrong, and we woke to beautiful weather!

Our first stop was Grand Falls' waterfall and gorge. The waterfall is the largest waterfall east of Niagara Falls, dropping 23 meters (75 feet) into a sheer faced gorge. The gorge is approx. 1.5 km in length. Too bad the power dam ruins it for photos.

Next was the "world's" longest covered bridge in Hartland. Very cool!

Then, we hiked to Hays Falls via the Mariseet Trail. The trail was only 3 km, but it felt like it was uphill, both ways! LOL

And, finally, we met up with our Texas friends, Ed and Claudia, at the Kiwanis Oceanfront RV Park in St. Andrews, which is on the Bay of Fundy. Had our first, and probably not our last, fish and chip dinner. Great company and a delicious meal. Can't think of a better way to end a fabulous day!

  • Fundy National Park

    26. Juni 2023 in Kanada ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Had coffee with Ed and Claudia, and started out intending to hike in New River Provincial Park, but the trails were too wet.

Instead, we carried on to St. John to see the Reversing Falls (not before several wrong turns and a little backtracking. I think Garry is going to fire me as the navigator!!!)

Anyway, the falls is a collision where the St. John River meets the Bay of Fundy. At low tide (when we saw it), the river empties into the bay, causing a series of large whirlpools. As the tides continue to rise, there is a brief period wherein the river and bay are equal, and this is called "slack tide." At high tide, however, the Bay of Fundy rises above the St. John River and the power of the tides actually reverse the flow of the river, creating huge waves and rapids. It's a very cool phenomenon to see!

Next, we drove to Rockwood Park, still in St. John, and walked the trails before carrying on to Fundy National Park. I'm glad Garry was driving cause the road was non-stop corners and hills.

Ended the day with a bbq and a bottle of New Brunswick wine. BTW, the campsite had amazing views!

Tomorrow is another day of hikes....can't wait!

  • Roots, Roots and more Roots!

    27. Juni 2023 in Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Holy crap, was that hike hard! Matthew's Head Trail is only 4.5 km, but it's a series of steep ravines with nothing but roots and rocks and loads of trilliums. The views of low tide made it worth it!

  • Hopewell Rocks

    28. Juni 2023 in Kanada ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

We left Fundy National Park and headed to Cape Enrage to see their historical lighthouse.  Well, that was a bust. The fog was too thick to see the anything let alone the lighthouse. Hope the boats out in the bay could!

We continued on to Hopewell Rocks, still on the Bay of Fundy, which was a big hit!  These "rocks" are rock formations known as sea stacks or the flowerpot rocks and are caused by tidal erosion. It was low tide so we were able to walk amongst the rocks on the ocean floor. Very cool!

Met back up with Ed and Claudia at our friend's, Frank and Sandra, house just west of Moncton where we will stay for a few days.  Unfortunately, Frank had to have an unexpected operation and is in hospital.  Surgery went well but we won't be able to see him.

  • Happy Canada Day!

    1. Juli 2023 in Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

    Happy Canada Day!

Hated to leave our fabulous "B&B by Sandra," but it was time to head to PEI today. Couldn't have had a better host! We had great meals and super company! We are so sorry Frank wasn't there, but we are going to stop in again on our way back home.

Crossed on the Confederation Bridge from New Brunswick to PEI. It's an 8 mile long bridge, the longest in the world crossing ice-covered waters and a Canadian engineering achievement. There is no cost to come onto the island, but it will be $50 when we leave. There is also a ferry to and from Nova Scotia, but it is down for mechanical issues until later this summer.

We took the North Cape Coastal Drive and some of the Central Coastal. We stopped at several lighthouses (there are 63 lighthouses on the island), most of which are decommissioned. The soil is so red and there are beautiful wild flowers everywhere.

Settled in at Cabot Beach Campground for the night...BBQ, some wine and fireworks!

  • Points East Coastal Drive

    2. Juli 2023 in Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Today, we drove the Points East Coastal Drive.

Started with a tour of Green Gables Heritage Site. The site depicts the farm and community that LM Montgomery used as inspiration for her most famous novel, Anne of Green Gables. This book has been translated into more than 20 languages!

Continued finding lighthouses, beaches, flowers and stopped to hike (well, actually walk) the trails at Greenwich National Park. The damage from hurricane Fiona can still be seen.

Ended our day at Red Point Provincial Park (stunning views of the Northumberland Strait), a BBQ, and a couple of games of Rummikub.

  • Bye Bye PEI

    3. Juli 2023 in Kanada ⋅ 🌧 22 °C

Boo! It was raining buckets, and the forecast for the next few days was the same. That said, we cut our PEI stay short and headed to Nova Scotia but not before stopping in Charlottetown.

I got to see one more lighthouse before Garry refused to drive down another bumpy, muddy road. Hopefully, he'll forget that when we get to Newfoundland!

I think I have relatives in PEI as there is a town called Pinette! Also, a provincial park, but it has been closed down. Kinda cool!

Charlottetown's historic downtown was quaint, the Province House (the oldest legislative building in Canada) was being refurbished, and St. Dunstan's Basilica was closed, but we got to see the outside, just beautiful! Unfortunately, Garry feels the same about churches as he does lighthouses. Resisted their ice cream and instead bought some cheese at Cows Creamery - what a business!

Back over the Confederation Bridge, $50.25 poorer, and onto NS.

Anyway, we boondocked at the Fundy Tidal Interpretative Center in Maitland, NS, where they study the tidal bore.

  • Yarmouth, Nova Scotia

    4. Juli 2023 in Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Happy 4th of July to all our American friends!

First stop was Burntcoat Head Park, in the Minas Basin, on the west side of the Bay of Fundy. It was foggy, but the views were still spectacular! And guess what? There was a lighthouse!

Toured Fort Anne (Garry would have liked to sample some of that rum) in Annapolis Royal, a sleepy historic town.

Stopped to hike the Clementsport Falls Trail, and we got to view the waterfall from both the top and bottom!

Ended up boondocking on Cape Forchu, just outside of Yarmouth (southern tip of Nova Scotia) with a view of the water, and yet another lighthouse! Watched the ferry come in from Bar Harbor, Maine, and steamed a couple of pounds of mussels for dinner.

  • Lunenburg

    5. Juli 2023 in Kanada ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

Boy, was it foggy this morning! The ferry to Bar Harbor sailed right past us, and we couldn't even see it.

Left Yarmouth and headed for Kejimkujik National Park Seaside.

Drove for miles where the wild fires were earlier this year. So sad!

Once at Kejimkujik, we hiked the 10 km trail through forest, ocean, and meadow views. Saw seals sunning themselves on the rocky island, a few deer, and two snakes! Although there was a bear alert, we did not see one.

Settled at the RV park in Lunenburg and walked to the wharf for dinner. Another good day!

  • Pictou, Nova Scotia

    6. Juli 2023 in Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Left Lunenburg and headed for Peggy's Cove.

The Swisair Memorial Site commemorates the 229 people who lost their lives on September 2, 1998 in the crash of Swissair Flight 111 into the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Halifax at the entrance to St. Margaret’s Bay, Peggy's Cove. Very solemn.

The lighthouse was a different story! Super crowded and hectic. But at least I got a picture!

Things went south in Halifax...street lights were out, downtown construction, parking was non existent, blah, blah, blah! Needless to say, we drove on through. Boo! Wanted to see the Maritime Museums, Alexander Keith's Brewery, etc. Oh welll, another time.

Anyway, ended up in Pictou with a great campsite. Cooked seared scallops...Garry didn't like them so I shared them with a fellow who was bicycling across the Maritimes for Diabetes who was eating a bowlinabag and was super grateful. Later, enjoyed some bag piped music from one of the neighbors. I told Garry to get out his banjo!

    Tomorrow is another day...

  • Starting the Cabot Trail

    7. Juli 2023 in Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Left Pictou and stopped in Inverness to walk a beach trail before starting up the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton.

We are now boondocked just north of Grand Etang. It is a beautiful grassy spot on a cliff overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence with amazing views. Even though we got here early, obviously, others have heard about this spot as two RVs were already here. Hopefully, they like music because Garry has finally been able to play his banjo!

We had a nice meal and enjoyed a beautiful sunset.

Tomorrow, we hike the Skyline Trail.

  • Hiking the Cabot Trail

    8. Juli 2023 in Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Had a hardy breakfast, bacon, eggs and hashbrowns and of course coffee in anticipation of our planned hikes.

Skyline Loop Trail (8 km) meanders up and down through the highlands and passes cliffs that overlook the rugged coastline and ocean. You can also see the Cabot Trail as it winds its way down the mountain and vehicles look like toys. The only negative is that it was very very busy.

Contrarily, the Macintosh Brook Trail (4.5 km) was quiet and winded through the forest and ended at a waterfall. Loved this trail! I can't get enough seeing waterfalls!

Driving the Cabot Trail is like riding a roller coaster! The speed limit ranges from 25 to 80 km/hr. The view were breathtaking!

We are camped at Ingonish Beach Campground. Enjoyed a super long shower and we are now having a happy hour cocktail before our dinner. A terrific day!

    Tomorrow...more hiking.

  • Franey Trail

    9. Juli 2023 in Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

OMG, I thought the Matthews Head Trail in New Brunswick was tough, but the Franey Trail today made it look like a cakewalk! This 7 km trail had more roots, rocks, boulders, and an elevation of 1,400 feet and took us 3 1/2 hours.  We were foolish thinking our daily five mile walk in "flat" Manitoba would have conditioned us.
But the weather was beautiful, the forrest was lush and the views were fantastic.

Once we rested and had some lunch, we finished the Cabot Trail, some parts with a 12.7% grade! We are now in Sydney.  Tomorrow, we see the Fortress of Louisbourg.

BTW, we are one month into our trip in this tiny motorhome, and we still held hands today. 😁
