  • Family Times With Nathaniel

    24 augustus 2022, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

We've had some fun times with our grandson, Nathaniel, this summer! Sometimes we join the family for days out, or we hang out at their house. They sometimes come to where we are housesitting, to meet the pets in our care and have dinner. We have gone to a festival, and some playgrounds. No matter what we do, we enjoy our time with him so much!Meer informatie

  • Mr. Straw's House in Worksop

    26 augustus 2022, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Mr. Straw's House is part of the National Trust, a charity that cares for nature and historical sites in the UK. William Straw was the owner of a grocery store in town.

At first, the couple and their two sons lived in a flat above the store. They bought this house in 1923 and Mrs. Straw redecorated. After Mr. Straw died suddenly in 1932, as a sign of mourning and respect, nothing was changed, not even the calendar page!

The older son William Jr, moved back after their mother died 7 years later, to take care of the property, grow and can vegetables, and cook for himself and brother Walter, who ran the business. The bachelor sons lived here for the rest of their lives, They didn't modernize, and didn't replace anything that they didn't have to.

Everyone in the family had collections, and they are still in place, some on display but many (such as 3000+ books, 300+ postcards, 2000+ magazines, countless newspaper clippings, etc.) in spare rooms, in bottoms of wardrobes, under beds, etc. So this house is "frozen in time", and really shows what life was like in the 1930s.

  • Clumber Park Walled Kitchen Garden

    26 augustus 2022, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

The Walled Kitchen Garden in Clumber Park can be described in superlatives! The huge garden takes up 4 acres. The 350 ft greenhouse is the longest one in the National Trust system. The apple orchard has 72 varieties of apples, many growing trellised against the garden walls. The garden also has 130 rhubarb varieties, the second largest collection in the world. No wonder Yorkshire is known for rhubarb!

The garden is maintained not only for its beauty, but also to preserve its heritage fruits and vegetables.

  • Wentworth Castle Gardens

    27 augustus 2022, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Royal Diplomat Thomas Wentworth was outraged when his home was inherited by his cousin. Determined to outdo his rival, Thomas purchased this 500 acre estate in 1706 and built a home and gardens. The gardens are laid out from the mansion up to the hilltop. At the top is a "castle", designed to impress even though it isn't real. It originally had four towers and a banquet hall. The views of the hills around the area definitely impress the present-day visitors!

On the grounds is a tall monument to Lady Mary Wortley Montague, who introduced the practice of smallpox inoculation to England in 1721. Smallpox killed 1 out of every 4 who contracted it. Lady Mary had lost friends and relatives including a brother to smallpox, and she herself had survived it but with scars. While in Turkey, she was pleased to find that smallpox inoculation was being done. She had her 5-year old son inoculated, making him the first English person to receive it. She promoted the practice in her writings. In 1796, Dr Edward Jenner developed the vaccine from the cowpox virus, which had much less risk.

  • Wakefield's Thornes-Clarence Park

    31 augustus 2022, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

We're staying in a hotel in Wakefield for two days between housesits. The room is small but clean. There is a really good breakfast included, and a nice big park nearby for walks to the gardens.

At the top of the steep hill there used to be a castle, with a long view below for defense. Now nothing is left of the castle except the hill. At the bottom is a stage for bands, and the slope of the hill makes it nice for viewers.Meer informatie

  • Wakefield Dinosaur Extravaganza

    4 september 2022, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

Several cities are having dinosaur events this summer. Nathaniel loves dinosaurs and has lots of them as toys. We had fun watching him interact with the dino puppeteers!

While the dinosaurs were taking a break, we went into the cathedral and Nathaniel seemed to be enthralled by the organist who was practicing!Meer informatie

  • Rotherham: Minster and Bridge Chapel

    6 september 2022, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

We are housesitting near Rotherham, a large market and minster town, also known for its 13th century Bridge Chapel. Of the four Bridge Chapels left in England, we've now seen three! We had read that it was open for communion services on Tuesdays, but for some reason it wasn't, so we only saw the outside.

There were some interesting buildings including Clifton Park Museum. It was built in 1783 as the family home of iron and steel business owners.

  • Church With the Crooked Spire

    9 september 2022, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

The Church of St. Mary and All Saints in Chesterfield is famous for its crooked spire. It was built in the late 13th century. The spire leans 9 feet 5 inches from its true center. The bottom timbers of the tower decayed and the 32 tons of lead tiles were heavy enough to make it crooked over time.

Chesterfield has named their football (soccer) team the Spireites!

  • Chesterfield Honors Queen Elizabeth II

    9 september 2022, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

An outpouring of love for Queen Elizabeth II is happening now, and will continue for some time. We went to Chesterfield to see the church with a crooked spire. The Queen's picture was on the altar in the church's Chapel of St. Peter, along with a book where people could write prayers and tributes to her.

After exploring the church, we went to Queen's Park for a picnic, and saw flowers in her memory at the bandshell.

There will be many memories of her. One quote I just read shows her humor. She was short, only 5' 3", and she was known for her bright colors. She said, "I have to be seen to be believed!"

  • Southwell Cathedral/Minster

    13 september 2022, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Southwell Cathedral was completed in 1300, as a stopping point for the archbishop on his journey between York and Canterbury Cathedrals. It has twin "pepper pot" towers, beautiful carvings, statues, and windows!

The Archbishop's Palace is also on the grounds. The old palace was ruined during the Civil War, except for the Great Room. The manor house was added onto the surviving Great Room, and is used now as the cathedral choir school and practice area.

  • Charming Southwell

    13 september 2022, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

The minster and market town of Southwell is a picturesque village in Nottinhamshire. At one time, Nottingham was known for lace making, and we happened to see a lace panel in the church, commemorating the Battle of Britain.

An apple was planted here between 1809-1815, and was first propagated as the Bramley Apple from this tree. It is now England's favorite cooking apple. The original tree still lives, but I had to look over a high wall to see part of it, as it is on private property.

  • Southwell Victorian Workhouse

    14 september 2022, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

This austere building is the best preserved example of workhouses that were all over the country. It was built in 1824 as a place of last resort for the destitute. Anyone who requested admission was accepted. It was designed to be decent and safe, but plain, boring, and difficult. Although it was harsh, conditions may have been better than on the outside. At least they had three meals per day and their health was looked after.

People were segregated. Able-bodied men were on one side, and able bodied women on the other. The old and infirm were in the middle, and the children's wing was at the back. Everyone received two sets of clothes and their own clothes were labeled and kept for their departure. They could have no belongings--there was no space allowed for them.

All the work (gardening, food preparation, laundry, building maintenance, caring for the infirm, etc.) was done by the able-bodied men and women, supervised by the master and matron, who also lived in the middle.

Children were required to get an education, as that was to break the cycle of poverty. They learned the four Rs in the morning (reading, writing, arithmetic, and religion) and learned skills in the afternoon.

This was not a forced arrangement. If someone wanted to leave, they could at any time, with permission. It was supported financially by the "poor tax".

  • Southwell Workhouse, Evolution

    14 september 2022, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

An infirmary was built in 1871 to separate the care of the infirm from the workhouse.

In the 1920s workhouses ceased to exist. This one became Greet House (named for the River Greet that flows nearby). The rooms were changed to one-room bedsits (apartments), emergency shelters for families in the 1950s-1980s. One of the bedsits has been recreated as it looked in 1977 when it was last used. Other rooms are shown in their derelict state to tell the full story of the building's history.Meer informatie

  • Northern College/Wentworth Castle

    16 september 2022, Engeland ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

Heritage Open Days is held for one week in September every year to celebrate England's architecture and culture by hosting free tours. Wentworth Castle had been closed for years, and was remodeled as a residential college. We had visited the huge gardens previously and had found that the home was not usually open to the public except for today's special event.

The house was first built in 1670, and over time, different owners added other wings in different architectural styles, creating a new front each time.

Because it is a college, the rooms are very different than they used to be, but looking at the ceilings and gilded mouldings gives a hint of its former grandeur. What an inspiring place to take college courses!

  • Housesitting in Dunblane, Scotland

    20 september 2022, Schotland ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

We were invited to arrive two nights ahead of our housesit in Scotland. That way we had time to get to know the homeowners before they left this morning for their holiday in Portugal. We were glad to be here early so we could watch Queen Elizabeth's funeral. It was good to be able to hear local people talk about her and how important she was to so many.

The house is a farm conversion into an estate that sits on a hill overlooking more beautiful hills. We are caring for two dogs, Lola and Smartie, plus a duck, six chickens, and two roosters. Fresh eggs for breakfast every day is a treat!

I'm learning to cook on the Aga, a cast iron heat storage "cooker". It has two top hotplates, boiling and simmering, and four ovens, roasting, simmering, slow cooking, and warming. There are no controls so one has to get used to which area to use for which purpose. People who have an Aga just love them!

  • Famous Falkirk Attractions

    21 september 2022, Schotland ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Falkirk is a town in the Forth River Valley. It is home to two of Scotland's most visited attractions, The Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpies.

The Falkirk Wheel is the world's only rotating boat lift. It connects the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal, making coast-to-coast transit possible once again.

Previously, the canals were connected by a flight of 11 locks, which took most of a day to pass through. Due to disuse, were dismantled in 1933. Now the boat lift raises and lowers boats 115 feet in only 5 minutes!

Then we visited the Kelpies, the world's largest horse sculpture, unveiled in 2014. They are 100 feet tall mythical Scottish Water Spirits, and a monument to Scotland's horse-powered industrial heritage.

  • Stirling: Former Capital of Scotland

    23 september 2022, Schotland ⋅ ⛅ 54 °F

Stirling is in a strategic location in central Scotland, situated between Edinburg and Glasgow, and was the best crossing of the River Forth while going north to the Highlands or south to the Lowlands. There is a beautiful old bridge there.

Sterling old town is on a hill, leading up to the castle. On another hill/craig is a monument to William Wallace, the real Braveheart, who defeated the English in The Battle of Stirling Bridge, to reclaim Scotland's independence. Wars have happened many times over this issue.

    24 september 2022, Schotland ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

This is one of Scotland's most important castles, both architecturally and historically. There has been a castle here since at least 1110, but most existing buildings date from 1490-1600. It has been attacked or besieged at least 16 times, two of which were turning points in Scottish history. It is a symbol of Scottish Independence and national pride.

Much of the castle was changed during its use by the military from 1800-1964 as a barracks and recruiting depot for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

    24 september 2022, Schotland ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

King James V built this palace for his new Queen, Mary, in 1540. The outside was decorated with over 250 carvings and statues. Research shows the palace was pink and the statues were in color! Much of the palace has been restored, including the making of seven tapestries for the important rooms.

The King died young and his wife continued to live here. Their daughter, Mary, was crowned Queen of Scots as an infant, in the chapel at the castle.
