    Day 26 - mile 356. Wrightwood

    11 мая, Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Last night, we setup camp close to a busy railroad track. That may not have been the best decision since it was pretty loud and made for a rather poor night's sleep.

Luckily, today is a town day! Before getting to Wrightwood, all we had was a 12 mile hike with over 3000 ft of elevation gain. We were all super beat from the uphill climb, but getting to town makes it worthwhile. There was also some trail magic along the way... Yah!

Today we ran into our first trail closure. The trail is closed for mile 356 to 374 due to the Bridge Fire that burned through that section last Sep. Unfortunately, there are no viable alternative routes so hikers are forced to skip forward on the trail.

Day 27 - zero in Wrightwood

    12 мая, Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

Zero days are a nice change of pace from the normal hiking days, but they aren't all fun and games. It takes some time to get the laundry done (clean clothes are amazing), resupply, and layout a plan for the next segment. One big accomplishment from today, I found the hole in my airpad and hopefully have it repaired. 😀 😀

After the chores are done, then it is pretty much fun and games. 😃 Eating a lot of food is definitely a part of the town routine. I'm definitely getting an appetite to just eat as much as I can. Several of the towns along the way offer some freebies for hikers. Here in Wrightwood I enjoyed a delicious free hot dog. Of all things, I also joined my hiking 'tramily' (trail family) for a free one hour yoga class. Hmmm I thought yoga was supposed to be relaxing.

Time on the trail also brings a whole new appreciation for sleeping on a regular bed and taking a warm shower. Possibly the best part of being in town is meeting new hikers and catching up with people I haven't seen out on the trail for a while. The hiker community and culture is a lot of fun.

    Day 28 - mile 384

    13 мая, Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

Back on the trail again after a fantastic stay in Wrightwood. Getting back on the trail was more challenging than I expected due to main highwaybeing closed. A trail angel drove us about 30 miles on a very roundabout route to get us close to the trail. We started at 11:30am on a steep two mile approach trail after which we began the 4,000 ft climb up Mt Baden Powell.
Reaching the peak of MBP was something I was looking forward to and was well worth the steep climb.
Clouds closed in on us in the afternoon and obscured what I expect would have been spectacular views.
We found a nice campground for the night and had a campfire for the first time on the trail. A nice warm fire was an attraction for other hikers camping there. It was fun sharing stories before dragging ourselves to our tents. BTW, my airpad did great, the leak repair worked.

    14 мая, Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☁️ 37 °F

It was a very chilly start to the day. I didn't want to roll out of the warm sleeping bag. Good thing I did since today was another fantastic day.
We ran into another trail closure. This time there was a four mile section closed to protect the habitat of the endangered mountain yellow legged frog 🐸
This required a rather long road walk to get around the closed section.
Today we also passed the 400 mile marker (640 kilometers for the other members of my trail family).

Woke up to frost on the tent again this morning, but it warmed up pretty quick. Today, I hiked 24 miles with 4,200 ft of uphill climbing. It was a challenging but satisfying day.
Halfway through the hike, there was the best trail magic ever! Breakfast burritos, fresh fruit, snacks of all kinds, beverages. All was graciously provided by 'Snowangel'.
We enjoyed another campfire at night, that was the third in a row.

ПутешественникSince early on, I have heard there was a family of 12 hiking the trail. Yesterday we saw them on the trail and last night they setup camp right next to me. I helped them setup their tents and had a chance to talk with them a bit. Their oldest child looks about 12 years old and the youngest is almost 2. I can't even imagine how they are doing this. The father said when he is loaded with water his pack weighs about 80lbs, he carries the infant, which is part of that weight. And I thought my pack was heavy.....

    Day 32 - mile 455 Agua Dulche

    17 мая, Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

Every day on the trail brings something new and unexpected. Today turned out to be more of a play day with some hiking mixed in.
I started the day with another nice warm shower, because I could. After a good start of about 10 miles we came across a car show right along the trail in Vasquez Rocks park. We took off the packs and walked around looking at cars.

We walked about a mile further where the trail goes through the community of Aqua Dulche. Perfect timing since the town was hosting a free lunch for hikers today. Yum, I practically had to be rolled out the door after that meal. I continue to be amazed with the generosity and kindness of the people we meet along the way.

A few hundred yards further down the road, there was a live country band playing. Luca, my hiking buddy, loves country music so we had to go listen for awhile

It had been a chilly, cloudy day all day and looked like it might rain. After the country music, we were ready to start doing some serious hiking but it finally did start to rain. We just happened to be passing a place called the PCT Oasis. Luca and I looked at each other and made a great decision to pull into the Oasis instead of camping at some flat spot along the trail. We spent the rest of the day talking with all the other hikers hiding out from the rain.

Maybe we will get back to hiking tomorrow?

    Day 34 - mile 498

    19 мая, Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

Last night we were sleeping by a road that goes into the nearby community of Green River. Instead of getting on the trail right away, I liked the idea of hitching a ride to a convenience store to get a soda and something sweet for breakfast. That was a good start to the day.

Around lunchtime, we crossed another road. The map showed a neat looking hamburger place not far away. Out came the thumbs and soon after we were enjoying a fantastic lunch. It was fun talking with some of the locals who had a lot of questions about how we were doing on the trail.

Even with the distractions, we got in another 20 miles and camped at a nice campground overlooking the Mojave desert. Hiking 20 miles is feeling pretty normal at this point.

    Day 35 - mile 518. Hikertown

    20 мая, Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

Another 20 mile day today that was mostly downhill heading into the Mojave desert. We passed the 500 mile and had a short celebration since that seems like a good accomplishment. The Proclaimers song about walking 500 miles seemed appropriate.

Our stopping point for today is a place called Hikertown. It is an interesting place that is owned by an even more interesting person. It has a Western theme and provides a welcome place to rest before crossing the Mojave desert.

    Day 36 - mile 525 Aquaduct

    21 мая, Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

There are quite a few trail traditions, one of which is a night hike across the Mojave desert with face paint and, in our case, glow sticks. We were all in for this, and it was a lot of fun. As it turns out, after today, I'm getting off the trail for one week to attend our big family reunion in St George, UT. This fun night hike was a memorable way to say goodbye to the great group of hikers that I've enjoyed so many experiences with over the last few weeks. I will miss them and hope to maybe catch back up when I return to the trail in one week.

Side note, I hiked with the group out to mile 525 then had to turn around and hike back to Hikertown since I was not able to find any other sure way to get off of the trail.

Another side note, it was great to have Slider join back up with us in Hikertown. Tomorrow, we are all going in separate directions. Slider is continuing ahead on the trail. I'm giving Luca/Tramp a ride to Tahachapi. He is pushing forward to Kennedy Meadows where he will meet his father to hike a few days then take a few day road trip. Martina hurt her back (from the big heavy pack she has been lugging around). She recuperated for a few days and has now jumped ahead to Tahachapi so is back in front. It will be interesting to see if we join up again.

    Day 37 - mile 587

    31 мая, Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

I'm back on the trail again after enjoying a fantastic family reunion in St George. I jumped ahead a bit (about 35 miles) to make it easier to get back to the trail.
This morning, I got onto the trail being well rested and fed from the last week in civilization. The next 140 miles are going to be challenging with long water carries and hot exposed hillsides. Today started with a 16 mile water carry and 4,200 ft of elevation gain. I may have gotten a little soft from the week away, but still did ok.
During the time off, I made some gear adjustments. I have a new backpack and tent. Each is a fraction of the weight of the ones I replaced. Both are working well.

    Day 44 - mile 703 Kennedy Meadows

    7 июня, Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

My arrival at Kennedy Meadows is a big milestone for me. From the beginning, I wasn't too sure that this was a place I would see in person. Having everyone gathered at the general store ring the bell and cheer for me on my arrival was something I won't forget.

There are a lot of hikers here. I was surprised and happy to see Slider again! I'm sorry he was delayed a bit after coming down with a bug. He is doing better now, and we will be heading back out on the trail together.

FYI, the PCT is divided into five regions that are each distinctly unique.
Southern California (desert) - 703 miles
Central California (Sierras) - 450 miles
    Northern California - 567 miles
    Oregon - 430 miles
    Washington - 500 miles

If the PCT were all desert, it would have had no appeal. The parts that make this an amazing trail for me are the parts that lie ahead. Now the real hiking can begin! 😃

    Day 45 - mile 714

    8 июня, Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

We are on our way to the Sierras. There is a ways to go before we are in the high mountains. In the meantime, the terrain is changing with huge boulders and plenty of trees to provide some shade. Slider is excited to be away from Kennedy Meadows and to start building back his hiking legs. That may take some time as he is recovering from a bug and has been off the trail for five days.

This is a popular trail. We passed quite a few day hikers and some out for a few days of backpacking. Several were interested in hearing how we are doing with the thru hike.

    Day 47 - mile 752

    10 июня, Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

Today I ended the day at a high mountain lake (11,300 ft in elevation). This was the most spectacular camping location so far.

I reconnected with Tramp today after parting ways two weeks ago He was off trail for a few days with his father and a friend. He came up the approach trail through Mulkey pass and waited about 20min until I came by. We couldn't have planned it better if we had tried.Читать далее

    Day 49 - mile 775. Mt Whitney

    12 июня, Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 46 °F

Today I took an excursion off trail to ascend Mount Whitney. It was an extraordinary experience. I believe the photographs may not fully capture the breathtaking vistas. Summit conditions were ideal, with clear skies and calm winds. This was an unforgettable experience.

After returning from Mt Whitney, it was time for a quick nap before pressing ahead another eight miles along the trail.

    Day 48 - mile 767

    12 июня, Соединенные Штаты ⋅ 🌙 52 °F

Today I finally saw the High Sierras! Hiking here is awesome. Today was also my first day of wading through snow fed mountain streams – I think I'm gonna need to buy some sandals because walking in wet shoes for hours isn't fun. (Update: actually, hiking with wet shoes after crossing a bunch of streams isn't that bad. They dry out pretty quickly!)

Nick Fowler went running past us on the trail today. He is attempting to break his record of completing the PCT in 52 days. That is absolutely amazing!

    Day 50 - mile 789. Forrester Pass

    13 июня, Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☀️ 46 °F

Today, I crossed over two high mountains passes. Forrester pass is the highest point on the PCT (13,120 ft). Kearsarge pass (11,791 ft) is along a side trail I need to take in order to get to town for a badly needed resupply. The terrain along the trail was spectacular.

The overall experience today was outstanding, but it is also worth noting that it was the most physically challenging day so far.
