    Devils@Cradle

    After dinner we had a booking for a Tasmanian Devil encounter at Devils@Cradle. Here we had a guided tour from one of the rangers there, after which we had the opportunity to meet up close a little boy pup Tasmanian Devil and give him a pat. Following this we got to participate in feeling and a game of tug-of-war with a group of Devils while enjoying some wine, a dessert platter and the open fire, toasting marshmallows and enjoying the feeding and interaction of the Devils when it comes to food.
    The sanctuary is set up as a breeding and refuge facility for Tasmanian Devils and 2 varieties of Quoll, the 3 largest carnivorous Marsupials in Australia. They get no funding from the Government so they rely on public contributions, donations and investment in their centre, particularly through events like the one we went to this evening. They also rely on adoption contributions so Lindsay sponsored a little Quoll by the name of Hazlenut to assist in her development, feeding breeding and the like.
    After the encounter at Devils@Cradle it started to rain and it was passed Millie's bedtime so back to our lodge for the night.    Okumaya devam et

    Marakoopa Caves, Mayberry

    We were up early today and checked out of the Cradle Mountain Highlander Cottages and drove an hour and a bit up the road to Marakoopa Caves, Mayberry. The road there was a very windy and hilly run, which really didn't go well for Millie... she was sick about 10 minutes from the Caves, but was so brave and waited until I was able to stop before being sick.
    We eventually got to the Caves, which were forecast to be very cold inside. We rugged up and went in, with the guild giving us a rundown on the Caves, how they are formed and the amount of cave there are throughout the region. There are predicted to be over 5000 cave systems in Tasmania, 4 of which are actually outfitted for tourism, 2 of which were in the Mayberry region. The tour lasted for about an hour and it was all very spectacular and pretty the way they caves have formed over time.    Okumaya devam et

    Earthwater Cafe, Mole Creek

    As we didn't have breakfast and we had been up since 7am, on the way to our next stop we stopped at a little "normal" cafe on the highway called Earthwater Cafe. It was a lovely place, peaceful and normally priced and normal food... it was a nice stop.

    Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary

    After a leisurely lunch, we headed further on to Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary. It is yet another wildlife sanctuary participating in the breeding and protection of the endangered Tasmanian Devil, among other wildlife. They also participate in breeding Quolls and give exhibit habitats and homes for Wombats, Betongs, Echidnas and rare bird species predominately unique to Tasmania.
    A ranger gave a talk and brought out a Spotted Tail Quoll and a Tasmanian Devil for a close up and personal talk, as well and giving a talk about their resident wombat. After the talk he fed a group of Devils and had a bit of Q and A about their eating habits. It was very interesting and, despite the noises they make when exchanging insults with other devils, quite cute.
    We were also free to roam the park and feed the other animals that are allowed to roam free there including ducks, geese, swans and kangaroos. It really did remind me of Raywinkles Animal Farm that used to be on the road the Bungendore and mush have closed in the late 1980s or early 1990s.
    Like so many of these farms, they are not funded by the government but by tourism to keep their programs going and keep the species they support in good health.    Okumaya devam et

    Country Club, Pospect Vale (Launceston)

    After finishing at Trowuanna Wildlife Sanctuary we headed on the our Launceston stop, which was only 45 mins travel. Here we got settled into the Country Club Villas, Prospect Vale which is about 10 mins from the centre of Launceston.
    While Lindsay played in the pool with Millie I did our first lot of washing for the trip. Then we proceeded to try and get dinner, but a lot of places were booked out due to some big event they have in Launceston this weekend, so we got something light and came back to our villa for dinner.
    It is nice to finally have a place where Millie actually has her own bedroom...    Okumaya devam et

    Launceston Kayak Tours

    This morning I was up at 6am to make my booking for a 7am Kayak tour on the River Tamar. I was the only person he had booked for the morning, so it was a great opportunity to get some one on one with the guide, asking questions and getting a bit of history.
    We launched from the pontoon where the boat Launceston Kayak Tours is located and headed down North Esk River to the River Tamar and headed north along the River before turning back and heading passed the privately morred boats. The guide mentioned that during the last significant flood event, 2 of the boats moored sunk, the wrecks still visible and littering the river; one of them was due to the mooring line being too short and as it reached the end of its line, it just got pulled under. We then continued down to the mouth of Cataract Gorge and down the South Esk River as far as we could go before reaching the bottom end of the rapids there, turned and headed back to the North Esk, where we continued along as far as York Park, and turned back to finish off. Overall it was about 7.5km covered, but in Hobie Kayaks, it was not a hard run. We were very lucky with the weather and we started to get a sprinkle of rain just as we were pulling back up at the pontoon... and then the rain continued...    Okumaya devam et

    Pony Ride,

    After the kayaking tour I got back to thr Country Club in time to take Millie for her pony ride at the horse stables owned by the Country Club. She had an absolute ball. There were 2 ponies, Tinkerbel and Rita... she chose to ride Rita. And she chatted all the way on her ride. She thought Rita was particularly funny from the Bluey Grannies, Rita and Janet.
    The horses weren't very happy though as it was raining and they really don't like the rain, but Millie got a great ride in and she had an awesome time.    Okumaya devam et

    Melita Honey Farm

    After the Pony Ride, we had a pretty open day, but there was a Honey Farm we passed on Saturday that was apparently not open and it wasn't far from where we are staying so we drove to Chudleigh to check it out.
    There they have over 40 different varieties of honey, from the conventional types to different mixes they make themselves on the farm, including those infused with fruit, chocolate and even varieties of manuka with propolis, royal jelly and all the good stuff bees use to keep healthy. They also had a museum teaching about bee-keeping and bees in general. It was a great place to visit and we had honey infused icecream when we were finished.
    After the honey farm we were driving back and mistook a salmon farm for a vineyard. Either way it was a great place to stop for lunch, tried some of their delicious salmon varieties, herbs and sauces they make as well. It was a good stop but I had to get the girls back in time for the James Boags Experience tour.    Okumaya devam et

    James Boags Brewery Experience

    I arrived at the museum of the James Boags Brewery Museum early and was able to enjoy a look around the museum before the tour was due to start. Unfortunately we were unable to take any photos inside the brewery as everything is done under secrecy and the type of yeast they use is apparently a secret ingredient in their beer. It was a fascinating look around the brewery but when you have been on a few brewery tours, they all tend to be the same, after all, how many different ways can one make beer?
    After the tour we got to try 3 different varieties of beer Boags produces, all of which are not available on mainland Australia and it got me thinking. They either produce relatively small quantities of these beers, or Tasmanians must drink a lot of beer. But while here I am finding there are varieties of beer from popular brands I have never heard of, others obviously not distributed on mainland Australia. It is unfortunate too.
    After the tour I headed back to get the girls for dinner, and on my way back, it started pouring rain.    Okumaya devam et

    Villa Change

    After dinner at the Country Club Terrace Restaurant, we went and got some groceries for our time in remote areas over the next few days and got back to our villa only to fine the torrential rain we had has shorted out some thing in the wiring of our villa... only ours. They couldn't fix it, so we got moved... and upgraded. Pity it is only for 1 night. Tomorrow we move on to Low HeadOkumaya devam et

    We were up shortly after 7am to get packed and out of our villa. It was a pity because after the power stopped working the villa we were upgraded to was very nice and spacious. We went for breakfast at The Links restaurant and may have stocked up on a few things like yoghurt and individual packets of cereal for the next few days, likely being in smaller remote towns and then we went to say goodbye to the horses. We had bought a packet of carrots, which they loved and gobbled down nicely; Millie enjoyed hand feeding them. We also saw a wallaby with a joey in her pouch that Millie thought was so cute... then we had to pack the care and leave for our next stop on our travels. We weren't going far, so we would take our time and have a few stops along the way.Okumaya devam et

    Launceston to Beaconsfield

    We headed through Launceston along the west banks of the River Tamar, stopping at the Tamarridge Winery and 3 Cuts Distillery, where we were able to sample some wines and gins. We did try some very nice whites and the gins were interesting as well. We may have spent some money at each, but at least we do have some room. While at the winery, Millie was about to run across the grass area they had there and, fortunately I was able to grab her as she would have run right across the path of a Copperhead snake... she was fascinated, but did not want to go on the grass again.
    After we finished at the winery and distillery, we continued on to Beaconsfield. There is a lot more there to do with the heritage status of the mine, which was probably only increased in publicity thanks to the 2 miners who got trapped underground in 2006. But the locals have done a lot to ensure the history and heritage value of the town is maintained and it has become probably the biggest industry for them now. If we didn't have to be at the Platypus House and Seahorse World, it would have been nice to plan a longer stop there.

    Platypus House and Seahorse World

    We arrived quite early for our tour at Platypus House but they fortunately had a cafe there so we were able to get a light lunch and sample some of the local chocolates produced in Tasmania at Anvers Chocolate Factory before the Platypus House.
    It was interesting and Millie was wrapped to see the Platypus but I did feel it was a little more talked up than what it turned out to be. They had 4 Platypus (3 female and 1 male) in 4 different tanks and 3 echidna who live in 1 enclosure. The guides know a lot about the animals and it was great to get up so close to these animals, but on the whole was a little anticlimactic.
    We then moved on to Seahorse World where we were able to get on to the tour before the one we were actually booked in for. It was interesting to see these creatures as well up close and to hear about their habits. They had a reasonable facility there which is primarily focused on the breeding and sales and distribution of these creatures. What was most interesting when all said and done is that Seahorse and nothing more than the equivalent of plankton or sea monkies. They breed prolifically, eat and grow to an age where they breed again. They become food for bigger sea creatures, just as they themselves eat smaller sea creatures like sea monkies or the equivalent and, though they are cute and pretty to watch, serve no real other purpose than to be food for bigger fish. It was interesting to hold one thought. Apparently they can survive for a fair while out of the water and they make a popping sound with their mouth when out of the water too.
    After the tour there is a small aquarium we had a look through but ultimately this tour felt a little anticlimactic as well. Seahorse World is basically a breeding facility to supply aquariums, alternative medicine manufacturers, and any other places that would have a need for live Seahorses.
    From there we headed to Low Head and our next stop for the night.    Okumaya devam et

    Low Head Penguin Tour

    We arrived at Low Head Tourist Park about 4.30 and got settled into our accommodation for the night. We went via the Batman Bridge, which was built in the 1960s to make it easier to get across the River Tamar than having to go all the way back to Launceston or to rely on a ferry service. It was an interesting bridge.
    After we got settled we had some dinner then got ready and went to the night time Low Head Penguin Tour. Here we heard a lot about the Ferry Penguins who have nests in and round the dunes in Low Head. They are incredible creatures of habit who follow the exact same routines every night, the same paths or tracks, the same practices of going out to get food during the day, back during darkness, following the same predictable patterns of behaviour, so much so that the guides are able to tell when things are going to happen, in what order and such.
    The tour ended just as it was starting to rain and it ended up being such a late night for Millie that she was asleep before we had even left the carpark, which is really saying something for her.

    Leaving Low Head for White Sands

    We got to have a little bit of a rest in this morning before having to get moving to check out after a 1 night stay at Low Head.
    The rain that started at about 9.30 last night continued quite heavily throughout the night, but eased off in the morning to occasional light showers.
    We stopped to get some supplies in George Town on our way passed, then headed inland.
    We impulsively decided to stop at Bay of Fires Winery at Pipers River, but this was closed and opens only by appointment, so we carried on to Bridestowe Lavender Estate.
    Here we had some morning tea, and had a look at the estate for about an hour before getting back on the road.
    The run from there to St. Helens was slow going. The road was very up and down and very narrow, so it was very slow going.
    When we were about 10 mins out of St Helens we found The Shop in the Bush which was an antique and old wares store, just on the side of the highway. We looked here for about 20 mins before heading into St Helens by about 2.30pm.    Okumaya devam et

    St Helens to White Sands

    We stopped for afternoon tea in St Helens to re-evaluate what we were going to do this afternoon. The weather was pretty horrible and looking to get worse as the afternoon went on, and then we discovered there was no internet in the entire state due to 2 of the 3 cables to the Australian mainland supplying internet and voice services being damaged or cut. We decided to continue on to White Sands Resort and got settled in to our villa here before the weather really did take a turn.
    But the accomodation in White Sands is great. Very comfortable.
    The more we drive around Tasmania the more we think, the drivers here are terrible. They drive in the middle of the road, cut corners and are just downright inconsiderate. This coupled with the narrow and windy road in places has made driving here a but hairy. But we are still having a great time and looking forward to 2 nights at White Sands.    Okumaya devam et

    Relaxing day at White Sands & Iron House

    Today was a chilled day at White Sands, and really what a honeymoon and holiday should be about.
    We slept late, and when we finally got up, headed to check out the facilities available at the White Sands resort. We checked out the huge swimming pool they have available as well as the games room and Cinema facilities provided to the guests. It really is an excellent facility they have here on the grounds.
    One of the other facilities they have here is the winery, distillery and brewery for Iron House. We went into the tasting room and tasted some very nice whiskey's, wines & beers that are produced by Iron House. It ended up being a nice lunch of drinking while Millie played in the play room they have there for children.
    We were planning to take Millie to the cinema for a 2.00 movie but she really wanted to go for a swim instead so we swam for about 45 minutes before it started raining and we went back to our room so we didn't get to wet.
    We spent the afternoon resting and recovering from our tastings...
    It looks like it is going to be another rainy night. Tomorrow on to Coles Bay.    Okumaya devam et

    White Sands to Coles Bay

    After packing the car the night before we were able to sleep in a little bit. Or so we thought. The sunrise this morning was so nice we got up and watched the end of it at 7am (see the photos). We packed the last of our stuff and hit the road by about 9.30.
    We arrived at Bicheno just after 10 to have some breakfast and then went and checked out the Bicheno Blow Hole, which was pretty good. I am not sure how it compares to normal, but the seas seemed pretty rough, so I can only assume it is bigger than normal.
    We then went to a place called The Farm Shed: East Coast Wine Center where we did some tastings of several wineries and distilleries that don't have cellar doors and generally only do small batch wines and spirits... and we ended up spending a bit of money there too... at least we will be set for spirits for the next few years.
    When finished there and with wallet burning, we headed for Coles Bay and checked into our next stop, had a late lunch and then I went for a walk along the rocks around towards the harbour at Coles Bay.
    It is pretty spectacular the scenery here and if we had more time I would have looked into doing some longer walks in the Freycinet National Park as there appear to be some stunning walks that also overlook Wineglass Bay. As it is we are only staying 1 night to break up the drive to Port Arthur tomorrow.
    Dinner and a whisky on the porch as the sun went down and a seemingly nice clear night. I may take the camera down to the beach tonight.    Okumaya devam et

    Coles Bay to the Spiky Bridge

    Just for something different today, we got up, packed the car and hit the road, after breakfast and checking out of the Big 4 at Cole Bay. We drove about half an hour up the road and decided on impulse to stop in at Devils Corner Winery. They had a nice outlook, and it was a lovely place to have a tasting. We stayed about half an hour before we took to the road again for Kate's Berry Farm, just outside of Swansea. Nestled in between 2 hillsides, the farm produces a lot of berry based products, including chocolate coated delights, preserves, wines and other products. We had a piece of Huddleberry Pie and tea, and then continued driving.
    We knew that just after Swansea there is a Convict Buit stone bridge called Spiky Bridge so we were on the look out for that to stop and have a look. When we got there, Millie decided she didn't want to get out, so she stayed in the car while Lindsay and I checked it out. It was more of a dam than a bridge, but it sure was spiky!     Spiky Bridge to Port Arthur

    After Spiky Bridge we continued down the Tasman Highway to Kelvedon Beach. Last night Millie had a melt down and wanted to go home, so we had already decided to stop at a beach so she could have a little play in the sand and surf. The surf wasn't too bad as the whole bay, though quite large and open to the seas, is fairly sheltered so she had a play and we found a lot of scallop shells and small conch shells for Millie to add to her collection. Once she got that out of her system and the smell of rotting seaweed got the better of us all, we got back in the car.
    We were planning to get lunch and petrol in Triabunna.. only one of those was practical as the petrol station we were planning visit was closed.
    So we continued on after lunch and the GPS said to take a certain road that became an unsealed road. OK we thought we could manage it and then 7km along there was a sign saying the road was suitable for 4WD vehicles only... stupid GPS, so we headed back and took the long way round (via Buckland (for petrol), Runnymede, Sorell Nd Copping) which ended up being the scenic route anyway... but again, the number of Tasmanian deiver who cut corners and narrow roads... I am beginning to hate driving here!
    We finally arrived at Port Arthur about 5pm and check into our very nice, modern and tidy cabin before heading to Fox and Hounds, Port Arthur for dinner.    Okumaya devam et

    Port Arthur sights

    We had a later start to today as it was a day at least we weren't having to check out and move on.
    As we were heading to check out some of the sights around Port Arthur, some Green Rosella's decided to pay us a visit. They are obviously used to being hand fed. Millie enjoyed being able to feed them by hand, but didn't like the idea of them sitting on her... she did though think it funny when one landed on my shoulder.
    After feeding the birds we headed to Eaglehawk Neck and Tasman Bay National Park Lookout. Here we had a coffee and hot chocolate.
    Then we made our way down to the Tesselated Pavement. Incredible how straight the lines are and how unnatural they look, but they are a completely natural occurrence.
    We then drove through Doo Town, where everything is a play on the use of the word Doo, from the names of properties to the names of businesses. Lunch at Doo-licious Seafood (fresh fish and chips) and a walk to check out the Port Arthur Blow Hole and Fossil Cliffs. Millie really enjoyed singing "the ants go marching"... a little too much.
    Then we checked out the Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen... again amazing how the natural structures of these 3 landmarks are formed, and how each is a version of the other, but with several million years between each; the Blowhole, the Tasman Arch and the Devils Kitchen being like the child, the parent and the grandparent.
    Today was a lot of visiting different locations around Port Arthur, as you could no doubt guess. We then moved on to the Tasmanian Chocolate Foundry, where Millie saw a pirate! He even had a chest with some treasure in it! Though the most amusing part for Millie was that he had a magpie on his shoulder!
    Then on to another lavender farm, where we had some lavender tea and lavender whisky... it is a thing and really does taste good... if very purple!
    Finally we got some supplies for a BBQ dinner and headed back to our accommodation. Millie got to play on the park while I did a load of washing and Lindsay went for a walk... then I got to go for a walk, after dinner.    Okumaya devam et

    Port Arthur Historic Site-Part 1

    Today is the day we did the biggest thing at Port Arthur. We headed to the Historic Site, where the old Port Arthur penal settlement existed. Much of it is receiving significant restoration and work to ensure its continued tourism.
    While we waited for the introductory tour, we looked through the gallery and an exhibition about the colony and people who were there.
    When we got our tickets we were given playing cards featuring the images of convicts and civilians who were at the penal settlement, and part of the tour involved trying to find the story of the person on the card. By the end of the day, Millie was disappointed that she couldn't find the man on Daddy's card, but we did find the story in the gallery of the people on each of our cards.
    After the introductory tour we were left to make our own way around the site. Though the tour guide referred to fire that destroyed much of the timber structure of the site in the late 1800s, but it wasn't until much later that we were able to fill in that story.
    For our own tour we started with the Paupers Depot and Hospital, on to the Guard Tower and Officers Quarters and then to the Commandant's Residence.
    The residence has been well restored and there is a lot to see there, down to an interesting style of wallpaper used throughout the residence, and Millie liked the Grandfather clock in the entry.
    We then moved on to the main Penitentiary which has a lot of incredible history, from the types of inn mates who were housed there, the type of living conditions they endured and how the different types of crimes and their behaviour would determine the luxuries and the liberties they were given while incarcerated.

    Port Arthur Historic Site-Part 2

    From the Penitentiary we made our way towards the dock for the harbour cruise, which is included as part of the admission to the site. Lindsay went off to get some lunch so Millie and I paid a visit to what is now a memorial garden and ruins of the old cafe where the last atrocities against human life occured on the site in April 1996. It was a very peaceful and reflective place of rememberance.
    After we had a little lunch, we got to the docks in time for our 1pm cruise on the harbour, where we got a passing look at Point Puer, the prison for boys 9-18 years of age and the Isle of the Dead where over 1100 people, convicts and free people are buried. It had an interesting commentary about the Historic Site.
    Once finished, we checked out the dry dock, slipway and lime kiln parts of the site, which was fairly isolated from the colony proper. We also already knew a little of what went on there from a little of the tour at Macquarie Harbour and Sarah Island. It was also interesting that where I walked to last night was almost to this point.
    Having checked out the Convict and Working parts of the site, we then moved up the hill through the Governors gardens to the Carnarvon Township which is the town tied to the Historic site. This is where the families of those who worked at the penal colony lived, and we looked through the remnants of the Governors Cottage, the old church, the new church, the parsonage and post office and the houses that belonged to a number of the families of the staff at the gaol.
    We finished off our tour with the Separate Prison and the Asylum, the former of which appears to be not unlike a lot of the Gaols of today, individual cells, workout yard, high fences. This was based a lot on the idea of psychological punishment as a greater deterrent than physical punishment.
    The asylum had various different lives, from a facility for the mentally disturbed, schoolhouse and dance hall and now a museum of artefacts found throughout the historic site.
    We had all done a lot of walking around the historic site, especially for Millie, so she had done very well.    Okumaya devam et

    Visit from feathered and fury friends

    We got back to our accommodation and had a rest for the rest of the afternoon, after all the walking we had done for the day had left us a little tired, especially Millie.
    While we were resting, our fethered and fury friends came round for a visit while dinner was being prepared.
    After we had dinner, we started to pack our bits and pieces and get ready to move on to our last stop on our trip; Hobart.    Okumaya devam et

    ...to Hobart (finally) our final stop

    We left Port Arthur accommodation about 10 am and headed for Hobart and the last place we would be staying on our trip. On our way back to the Tasman Highway, we stopped into Tasman Honey, a company that has been in the area for over 40 years, producing raw honey in the region. It was good to actually talk to an experienced bee keeper and get some advice and ask some questions about bee keeping in Tasmania. It also answered my curiosity about the Bumble Bees; The only good Bumble bee is a dead one. They get in and starve colonies, and the wasps are worse for bee colonies. We also got a sign for our yard for our bee keeping.
    After we finished there we continued on to Sorell where we had lunch... if I had realised just how close we were to our final stop we could have just waited but we left Sorell about 1pm and arrived at our accommodation at Riversdale Estate Winery about an hour later after spending about 45 mins at Frogmore Creek Winery, which is on the same road; we are staying in wine country.
    We got settled, then checked out Coal River Farm, Cheese and Chocolate. Here we met the resident goat, Chillis and Millie got to feed him and give him a scratch... well the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. We also got to watch the chocolatiers making Easter Ducks and Bunnies. We had some cheese tasting and as we were leaving one of the chocolatiers asked Millie if she liked duck chocolate (though I think he said dark) because he had a reject he gave Millie of a duck that only had 1 eye for free. She thought it was so cute and was absolutely wrapped in it.
    After that we came back to our accommodation and I had a nap before we went to dinner in Richmond at the Richmond Arms Pub and after dinner I went aurora chasing.    Okumaya devam et
