  • Beach picnic and Jazz night

    7 Februari 2025, Selandia Baru ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

You just can't do justice to the landscape here. The scenery is vast. Rabbit Island is a wide beach and sand dune fringed but not enclosed by two mountain ranges. All we have managed here is holiday snaps. We enjoyed walking the beach. Rob swam - that's him disappearing into the distance. We had a light lunch before the increasing wind made a return to the house more attractive. We read and rested before an evening of Jazz on the wharf at Mapua. A good dark ale and fish and chips were very welcome. It was a beautifully warm evening surrounded by happy, active families. This is a wonderful lifestyle.Baca selengkapnya

  • Sunny Saturday in Nelson

    8 Februari 2025, Selandia Baru ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We woke to beautiful blue skies. Rob and David ran the parkrun. 8. 00am start! The mayor of Nelson, Nick Smith, was lucky enough to have his photo taken with Rob. Sue and I had the best coffee at Raglan Roast. I'm becoming an expert at blagging my way onto a table and chatting with the locals. It's probably a sympathy element working for me. We went into town to the vibrant craft and food market. Then a cooling paddle on Nelson beach. Rob and David played tennis after lunch. Then, a walk with Sue and Rob up the foot hills behind the house to the Sprig and Fern, another great Ale house. Supper on the terrace, a very tasty lasagne and a sunset. Another fab day.Baca selengkapnya

  • Chilled Music in Nelson.

    9 Februari 2025, Selandia Baru ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

A day of relaxation and good music. Starting with Sue's Community Chuch, featuring a worship band and a message on thankfulness and prayer. We were back in Founders Park in the afternoon for a Brazilian band, together with a dancing man and parrot🦜. Well, why not? Then, on to the Styx Bar at the port in Nelson with Mark Mc Kenzie' s 80s music. Sue's delicious stir fry rounded off the evening on the terrace.Baca selengkapnya

  • Malborough Sound and Picton

    10 Februari 2025, Selandia Baru ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We were sad to leave Sue and David this morning. They have made us so welcome and really aided my recovery. Lots of healthy meals, rest, and just the right level of exercise and entertainment. Thank you so much, Sue and David.
I was expecting a rather average journey to the ferry. Again, the scenery astounded us. We stopped for a stroll at Pelorus Bridge and lunch on Marlborough Sound at Monldrangi, where Rob had a swim. At Picton, we watched our ferry to Wellington depart. Fortunately, we are catching it in the morning. Our DOC campsite at Whatamongo is beautiful, about 30 mins from the ferry. Rob cooked chichen, chorizo peppers and rice for supper. How lucky am I!

  • Picton to Wellington

    11 Februari 2025, Selandia Baru ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We left the campsite before daybreak to catch the Picton to Wellington ferry. A grey and chilly day, but we still stayed on deck to enjoy the views of Malborough Sound and coming into Wellington Harbour. We went to Te Papa for the afternoon. The Gallipoli section was overwhelmingly sad. We met the Moa bird, a now extinct gentle giant. We had heard of him in Te Anua and were intrigued. The other monster is pretty gentle too. We stayed with Rhiannon and Dylan, who treated to a great homemade meal and a very comfortable stay. It was great to catch up with their news.Baca selengkapnya

  • Wellington and Weta workshop

    12 Februari 2025, Selandia Baru ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

Had a nice breakfast at Rhiannon, Dylan and Bryn's. ( the latter being their retired Greyhound). We then went to Weta Workshops where most of the weapons and actors masks etc were made for the Lord of the Rings. The animatronics were amazing. A lovely bacon bap lunch and coffee followed at Scorchios at Scorching bay Wellington. The drive on round the Wellington bay coastal road was fantastic. Our next campsite up the coast was the first in NZ we stayed at to have a pool.Baca selengkapnya

  • Lake Taupo

    13 Februari 2025, Selandia Baru ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

A long day of driving to Lake Taupo with great views all the way. We rerouted to Highway 4 because Highway 1 is closed for a few months. The region around the waterfall was a geological mystery to me. Lots of soft rock and river action I would postulate. Tongariro volcano is very impressive. Our campsite at Motutere was delightful. We looked directly on to Lake Taupo. (thanks for the tip Col) The best rainbow I've ever seen rounded off the evening.Baca selengkapnya

  • Tauranga

    17–18 Feb 2025, Selandia Baru ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

Tauranga was wet and windy on Monday with spectacular seas as we circuited the base of Mount Maunganui. The purpose of the trip was to have my wrist checked out in the hospital. All is going well, and the old cast was replaced for a hard one. We moved on to Cooks Bay in the Coromandel. Fitted in a beach walk before supper.Baca selengkapnya

  • Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach

    19 Februari 2025, Selandia Baru ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We started at Shakespeare's Cliff, looking into Cooks Beach, where he viewed the transit of Mercury across the sun as a means of firmly identifying the longitude at this point. Every day is a school day. Panoramic views. We had a 40-minute walk to Cathedral Cove. Spending most of the day enjoying the beauty and waiting for the tide to fall so we could walk through the arch to the next beach. Finally, the madness of Hot Water Beach. Here, you dig a hole in the sand and prostrate yourself in your homemade hot tub along with hundreds of strangers. You have to correctly position your pool. Too close to the sea is tepid, too near the rock source burns your feet.Baca selengkapnya

  • Cooks Beach to Whangamata

    20 Februari 2025, Selandia Baru ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

A final walk and paddle on Cooks Beach before setting off. (First 2 photos). We walked through a pine forest to Opoutere beach, eating our picnic lunch in the shade of the trees. Rob had a swim (second 2 photos). Onwards, just a short distance to stay with Pamo and Col in Whangamata. We were made so comfortable in their lovely home and shared a delicious, healthy meal prepared by Pamo. We had plenty of time to reminisce over French campsites where we've met and shared cycling trips over the past two years. Our serendipitous meeting in Epernay started it all off. There was a bit of putting the world to right. No time here for our shared wisdom. 😄Baca selengkapnya

  • Whangamata with Pamo and Col.

    21 Februari 2025, Selandia Baru ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

An early start for a walk on the extensive beach at Whangamata. Very wise as the sun soon heated everything up. Its harbour area was very sheltered and the beach has an estuary at both ends. Tree covered islands dot the bay. We had coffee in town and returned home for a late breakfast. I had a swim (YEAH!) in Pamo and Col's pool. Thanks to an expensive big blue plastic bag, especially for the plaster cast. It worked well and everything stayed dry. I'm feeling more confident that short swims are now a thing. Rob and Col had an afternoon on the beach with boogie body boards to ride the waves. Col prepared a lovely lamb casserole for evening meal. So good to share time together.Baca selengkapnya

  • Uretiti

    22 Februari 2025, Selandia Baru ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Saturday started with Rob doing Whangamata parkrun which only had about 70 runners and he came 28th. It was hard work as 90% on soft grass. We then sadly hugged farewell to Pam and Col, who had looked after us so well. We headed north and encountered traffic jams and slow progress through Auckland city, which reminded us of UK motorways! Eventually, we arrived at Uretiti campsite at a beautiful location on the East Coast. We enjoyed the sunrise over the sea the following morning before setting off early to the Bay of Islands.Baca selengkapnya

  • Bay of Islands Day 1

    23 Februari 2025, Selandia Baru ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Our early start from Uretiti gave us a full day in the Bay of Islands. We visited the Treaty Grounds at Waitangi. A well organised and informative tour. There are so many views and interpretations on the treaty and how it has helped New Zealand people come together. At least they are talking and not fighting. After settling into our campsite, we took the ferry to Russell ( previously called the Hell hole of the South Pacific by Charles Darwin). It is genteel now, and we had a memorable lovely meal at the Duke of Marlborough Tavern. Our water front table was near beautiful folky live entertainment by a talented lady with her guitar.Baca selengkapnya

  • Bay of Island Day 2

    24 Februari 2025, Selandia Baru ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

A breakfast with sunrise at our campsite in Paihia. It was a stunning day for our Bay of Islands boat cruise. This included a trip out to the Hole in the Rock island, sight of two bottle nosed dolphins and an hour spent on an island where we walked to the fop of the hill with a picnic and great panoramic views. In the afternoon, we returned to the Treaty Grounds to catch up on the bits we missed the previous day. Back to the campsite for a cup of tea, a swim and a rest.Baca selengkapnya

  • Auckland for a rest!

    25–27 Feb 2025, Selandia Baru ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

The toilets of Kawakawa. Something (but I'm not sure what) to behold. We travelled to Auckland down the west coast in one long morning. Finally, and for half an hour, we caught up with Laurie and Ava. We have chased each other all over New Zealand. It was such a joy to see them. It's nice to be in one place for 2 days before we leave for Taiwan. It's such a peaceful place on the outskirts of Auckland. Just what we needed.Baca selengkapnya

  • Kaohsiung Taiwan

    28 Feb–2 Mar 2025, Taiwan ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

A long day of travel brought us to Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan to visit David, Rena, and Rena's parents, Eugene and Maria. On Saturday, Eugene very kindly drove us to a Buddhist temple on the outskirts of Kaohsiung. It covered a huge area, and we learnt the life story and teachings of Buddhism. There has been a lantern festival throughout China. Many of the paper decorations were still in place. The centre of Kaohsiung has a big lake and recreation area. The dragon and tiger are the emblems of Kaohsiung. We had a family meal in an English restaurant, then an amazing shoulder, foot, and leg massage, making for a very restful night - some of us sleeping during the experience.Baca selengkapnya

  • Sunday day trip

    2–8 Mar 2025, Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Maria and Eugene took us all to visit Tainan, the city where Rena was born. The Dutch East India Company built a fort here in the 1630s. More recently, it became a school. The cinema is a very old one with hand painted film advertising. The Confucian temple became a seat of learning for Taiwan. Finally, we visited Kaohsiung beautiful harbour area, where the British Consulate residents overlooked the bay. We finished the evening with a meal in a restaurant where we had a selection of meat and vegetables which we individially cooked in broth at the table.Baca selengkapnya

  • Southwest Coast Taiwan

    3 Maret 2025, Taiwan ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Maria drove us down the southwest coast. After a lunch stop, we visited a cocoa farm. We had a very interesting demonstration of cocoa production, expertly interpreted by Rena. Taiwan produces very little cocoa but goes for the quality market. A quick stop off for a paddle in the South China Sea. We stayed the night in Kenting and went out for snacks and entertainment to the night market. There were many delicacies to attract us, including toffee tomatoes and a selection of fried mushrooms. Rob won a key ring on a burst of the balloons with a darts game. Lots of fun and a vibrant atmosphere.Baca selengkapnya

  • South East Taiwan

    4 Maret 2025, Taiwan ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

An early start past what looked like the setting of 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' and into Kening National Park with botanical and geological interest. (Volcanic and limestone) There were great views of the coast and southern tip of Taiwan. We then headed up the East Coast with sandstone and coral rock formations. Next was Water going Uphill - an incredible optical illusion where the water stream clearly was going against the law of gravity. We travelled further up the coast to the 8 Arch Bridge, representing 8 immortals who crossed the sea. We walked over the many steps of the bridge to the island comprising volcanic lava. We then headed into the mountains to a hotel natural hot springs spa. Thank you, Lee Cooper Tours.Baca selengkapnya

  • Rice Fields and Tea Experience

    5 Maret 2025, Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

A day of many experiences. New landscapes, much laughter, learning and relaxation. After a cup of coffee among the "straw" animals ( amonsgst which I found my Penguin!), we moved on and picked up our new means of transport among the rice fields. The 4 persons Minion buggy was expertly driven by David and Rob. David's normal rule abiding driving was occasionally abandoned to nearly throw us into a paddy field with much squealing from the back. We moved on to a tea farm and factory. The farm was in its third generation of family ownership. The current farmer had re-engineered production to exert more control over high quality, market led products. The farming community, in the village and surrounding area, was trying to encourage more young people back to the area and develop tourism. We then headed up into the mountains to stay in a luxurious natural hot water spa hotel. We enjoyed the spa facilities which had a strict dress code - birthday suits only. Lots of entertainment available, including dance shows, table puck games, and archery.Baca selengkapnya

  • Returning to Kaohsiung

    6 Maret 2025, Taiwan ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

We left the peace and serenity of the Royal Spa Hotel. The Museum of Pre History at Taitung informed and entertained us before our journey back to Kaohsiung. We had a tasty and entertaining sushi meal with Eugene. Dishes were selected from a conveyor belt that passed our table. Special orders were delivered by train direct to the table. All too tempting! Later that evening, we travelled by High Speed Train to Taipei. Speeds of up to 250 kph meant we completed the 350 km journey in 1.5 hours.Baca selengkapnya

  • Taipei, our last day

    7 Maret 2025, Taiwan ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Our final day in Taiwan, in the capital Taipei. It was great to share the time with Maria. We took the MTR and bus to the Palace Museum. It contains many Chinese treasures, There were loads of fascinating objects. My favourite was the pictured ancient volume measuring vessel. We spent a few hours here and had lunch in the restaurant. It was also a refugee from a cold day! We gambled on Tiapei 101, having a view from the top. On arrival at the base, we realised this was not going to be, as the top was above the clouds. We were content with our day and happy to return to our hotel for a rest. We prepared for our 16-hour flight back home, which was early the next day. Thanks to Rena, David, Maria and Eugene for an amazing week of support and entertainments. We couldn't have done it without you.Baca selengkapnya
