Unexpected Overseas Trip

What a crazy couple of days we have had since our return home Sunday from our planned month-long RV-trip that we ended up shortening to just one week!
We are currently at the USO Lounge at the Denver International Airport (DEN) … awaiting our flight to Toronto’s Pearson International Airport (YYZ) in Ontario, Canada.
To make a long story short, the reason for our reversal of travel plans, which will eventually find us in Türkiye for the second time this year, is a glitch with Turkish Airlines (THY) flight vouchers we received when we canceled a summer trip to Europe this past July.
Turns out that the vouchers are expiring in early October of this year … not next year as we’d been led to believe. Not willing to let the vouchers go to waste, we scrambled to change plans over the last few days … driving home from southwestern Colorado, packing bags, and arranging last minute details for what will now be a month long overseas trip.
Our flight to YYZ is about to be called … more when we are settled into our overnight hotel.Leggi altro

Settled in @ Sheraton Gateway @ YYZ

AC 1038, Air Canada’s daily 11:32a flight from DEN to YYZ, is the same one we took to get us to Toronto for our expedition to the Canadian High Arctic in July. Same aircraft, too … an Airbus A220 with tight seating in the economy cabin.
The flight was uneventful … with the aircraft not only boarding early, but pushing back from the gate early as well. Since this flight was a last minute purchase, there were no exit row seats available to give us extra legroom unfortunately. Luckily, the passenger load was light, so Mui jumped into the row behind me as soon as boarding was completed. Thus we managed to travel in comfort.
We landed at YYZ 10 minutes early at 4:20p. Luckily, our gate was available, so no delays waiting to deplane. When we got to immigration, we were directed to the automated kiosks instead of to the line snaking around a couple of layers deep for a face-to-face with an agent. In no time at all, we had our customs forms in hand and were on our way to baggage claim to collect our bags. Maybe a 5 minute-wait there. We still don’t know why the agent at the check-in counter at DEN tagged our bags for priority handling, but we thank him anyway.
For this last minute trip, we opted to ease our travel by booking the Sheraton Gateway at YYZ Terminal 3 for our overnight stay. No shuttle ride necessary. A quick ride on the LINK train from Terminal 1 got us to the hotel easily enough.
Since our flight tomorrow is not until 10:10p, I asked about a late check-out when we arrived at the Sheraton. I was given two options — keep the current rate and pay to extend our check out to 2:00p; or upgrade to the Club Level to extend until 5:00p, and also get appetizers at the Club Lounge tonight, and breakfast there tomorrow. Price-wise the latter was a much better deal, so a no-brainer decision netted us room 772 … with a city view.
Time to relax.Leggi altro

Two to Travel?? No, we upgraded at the hotel so we could basically get a day room the next day instead of checking out at noon and killing time at the airport.

Mui Gets a COVID-19 Test!

No, Mui doesn’t have COVID-19. We know this because we tested ourselves at home this morning and have the “single pink line” negative result to prove it.
Rather, he got caught in Canada’s random COVID-19 testing net.
Here’s what’s sad about this. Canada just yesterday announced that the random testing program is ending as of 1 October … in just two days’ time. Since we had 3 days to get Mui tested, we probably could have skipped the formality. But we plan to return to Canada in the future. No need to borrow trouble by skipping the test … especially since it is free and easy enough to get done at the designated LifeLabs clinic.
Something else that’s sad about all this. The clinic moved off site from where it was at YYZ just yesterday. Not too far away … but not walking distance, unfortunately. No matter … Uber works very well in Canada. It took us no time at all to get to the clinic.
Once we arrived at LifeLabs, we were in and out in under 10 minutes … paperwork and all. Now we await the results —24-36 hours we were told by the nurse. The good news? We don’t need to have the results in hand to board our flight to Türkiye tomorrow night!Leggi altro

@ the Maple Leaf Lounge

With a full day free prior to the 10:15p departure of flight TK18 to İstanbul, Türkiye, we could have taken the light rail into Toronto for some sightseeing. Instead, after the hectic days we spent arranging this last-minute trip, we opted for a relaxing pre-flight day at the Sheraton Gateway.
Waking up around 7:00a, we started our day with breakfast at the Club Lounge. Then, we hopped on the LINK train and went back to Terminal 1 to do a bit of recon. Primarily, we wanted to find out where and when to check in for our THY flight. A map answered the where question. A member of the ground crew for the airline sharing the same check-in counters with THY answered the when question.
Extending our check out from the Sheraton Gateway to 5:00p made for an easy day … no need to wander around the airport with bags in tow until the THY counters opened at 6:00p.
After checking in for TK18, we headed to the priority security checkpoint for business class passengers. In minutes, formalities completed, we were making our way through the concourse to Air Canada’s Maple Leaf Lounge … where we are killing the remaining hours until it’s time to go to our gate to board our flight to İstanbul International Airport (IST).
I’ll write again once we are in the air. We’ve been advised that there will be a short delay in departure, however, so whether it will be today or tomorrow when I take up the iPad again … well that is TBD.
P.S. We got Mui’s COVID-19 PCR results minutes before checking out of the Sheraton. Negative … as expected.Leggi altro

Viaggiatoreahh. real time Journaling is so great. your footprints are so good. I wish I had done a better job of Journaling during our cross country trip but I had a hard time keeping up. Great detail Erin. As always you are a role model for me sometimes

After the Long Haul

I never got around to writing while we were en route from YYZ to IST. Call me lazy … or uninspired. But now I find myself with some time on my hands, so here goes.
The calendar page has turned to the last day of September. It’s just after 4:30p. We are at THY’s domestic lounge at IST, sipping Turkish tea and whiling away the 2-hour layover before the final leg of our travels from Canada to Türkiye.
TK18 was an uneventful flight. Our departure from YYZ was delayed 30 minutes to 10:54p … with boarding 40 minutes before that. Despite the short time to get everyone onboard for the “heavy” flight, all went smoothly. So much so that we pushed back right around the new scheduled departure time and were in the air by 11:10p.
Service on THY, I am happy to say, is back to pre-pandemic levels. The meal service started about an hour into the flight with cocktails and warm mixed nuts. Appetizers (soup in my case) and the main course followed … all served individually. And a selection of desserts, of course.
Mui took advantage of his lie-flat seat immediately after the meal service was concluded. I stayed up for a while to watch “Operation Mincemeat” starring Colin Firth … based on a true story from WWII. And then it was bedtime for me as well. We both slept until the cabin lights were brought up for the pre-landing meal.
Our flight landed at IST 15 minutes early … at 2:55p. Of course, by the time we rolled to our gate it was 3:15p … big airport after all. Walking along the long concourse, we made it to the domestic transfer entry kiosks. I counted 5 people spread across all the open lanes. Needless to say, it took no time at all to complete the immigration formalities and move on to the security checkpoint to enter the domestic terminal.
We were hoping to change our tickets for İzmir (ADB) to an earlier flight, but we must have missed the THY customer service counter before the immigration kiosks … or it wasn’t open. No matter. The THY lounge is comfortable enough and writing this snippet about the long haul to IST has made the time pass quickly enough.
The last bit to be written after we get to our apartment in İzmir.Leggi altro

Our Travel Day Concludes in İzmir

Another uneventful flight — the final one of our inbound trip — brought us from IST to ADB.
TK2336 departed IST on time for the 50-minute flight. As soon as the aircraft completed its climb to cruising altitude, we were served a hot meal … karnıyarık (eggplant with a ground beef filling) and rice … one of our favorite Turkish dishes. Dessert was a mango nougat mousse. All delicious, but considering we began descending for ADB almost as soon as we were level, we had to scarf down the food.
Our flight landed on time and taxied up to a jetway, which made it easier to deplane at the domestic terminal and make our way to the international terminal to collect our luggage. It’s a ridiculous process since there’s never anyone at customs and everyone just walks out of baggage claim. Then again, it beats having to claim bags in İstanbul at the conclusion of an international flight and then turn them back in again for a domestic flight.
At the taxi rank, we were immediately shown to the next cab that pulled up. This was probably one of our fastest times from airplane to ground transportation. Since it was 8:30p by this time, there was hardly any traffic. A half-hour later, we were unloading the bags in front of the apartment in Alsancak.
We have checked in with my family, but the actual reunion will be tomorrow morning. We’ll see everyone for breakfast at my sister’s place tomorrow morning.
In the meantime, some shuteye is in order. It’s after 10:30p. Time to go to bed!Leggi altro

Change to Outbound Travel Plans

I’ve been horribly remiss in writing about our time in Türkiye. I’ll try to get a summary footprint uploaded before we leave in a few days’ time. In the meantime, a quickie snippet about a change in our travel plans.
We were relaxing before breakfast this morning when Mui came across a news headline that had us scrambling to make new departure arrangements for 18 October.
Turns out that Lufthansa and Eurowings are going on strike starting on the 17th. Darn! Not good news for us since we’re scheduled to fly out of Stuttgart, Germany on Eurowings for the last segment of our three-flight travel day from Türkiye to England. It’s a real shame as the business class award tickets I purchased to get us to England required incredibly low miles to be used.
Nothing to do but make alternative arrangements. I knew we could fly THY from İstanbul to London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR), but were there alternatives with other airlines direct from İzmir? The short answer? Yes. But none of them flew to LHR. That might have been OK any other time, but we have National Express bus tickets to get us to Southampton from LHR.
Thus, I booked us on THY … a mid-morning flight from ADB to IST … an early afternoon flight from IST to LHR. The possible upside to the new plan? We might arrive early enough to switch to the 6:15p bus from LHR to Southampton🤞🏻.Leggi altro

Türkiye: 2 Weeks in Summary

Here I am with the summary footprint I promised for our two weeks in Turkey.
Honestly, I didn’t do much of anything. From the get go, this trip was intended simply as “family time” … to add on to the brief visit we made to Turkey in the spring. Our goal was to enjoy time with our families and leave the exploring to another time.
With my family all living in İzmir, it was easy for me to spend time with them. Mui had to go further afield for his family time … to Eskişehir … a province in Central Turkey. The dates for his trip were specifically selected so that he could join school buddies for a dinner reunion that he found out had been planned in Ankara … a short train ride from Eskişehir. The bonus of that little segue … his nephew, who lives in Samsun, a province in the Black Sea Region, drove down for a day while Mui was in Ankara. Thus, with a quick 4-day jaunt, Mui managed to kill several birds with one stone … so to speak.
As is always the case when we’re in Turkey, there was a lot of food involved in our family get togethers. Breakfast … brunch … lunch … afternoon tea … dinner. Sometimes at home. Sometimes at a favorite eatery. Sometimes in the city. Sometimes in nearby districts. We even managed to squeeze in a dinner that has become a tradition with Mui’s cousin and her husband.
I know, I know. This summary does not do justice to the delightful time we spent with family and friends during this whirlwind trip. But … at least I got a snippet posted. Hopefully, the included photos will make up for the dearth of words and you can see from our smiles what a great time we had.Leggi altro

Travel Day: İzmir to Southampton

We left family and friends in Türkiye behind this morning and are in England now … specifically in Southampton. Why? Because, instead of flying back to the USA, we’re cruising back there. Sure, it will take us two weeks to do so … but, we’re retired and have all the time in the world. Besides, booking a last minute cruise was so much less expensive than purchasing last minute airfare … and I don’t mean in business class, but in economy.
Anyway, our TransAtlantic cruise is still two days away. In the meantime, here’s the story of today … our travel day.
I must say that the Lufthansa/Eurowings strike that caused us to change our flight arrangements was a blessing in disguise. (And yes, the strike did begin yesterday … as announced.) What was to have taken us three flights and a bus ride to get to Southampton, took us two flights and a bus ride instead. And instead of arriving at our hotel shortly before midnight, we arrived around 9:00p. Much better.
Overall, our travel day was an uneventful one. Rather than having to start out at 3:00a to get to our first flight at 6:15a, we were able to get started at 6:00a … our usual wake up time. Formalities at neither ADB nor IST put up any barriers as we went through immigration and the security checkpoints in a jiffy. Both of the THY flights were on time. In fact, we arrived at LHR 25 minutes ahead of schedule. That was a mixed blessing, however, as we had to wait for our gate to clear before we could deplane.
Ten minutes! That’s all it took for us to get through immigration and arrive at baggage claim once we deplaned. A miracle … especially after the horror stories we were bombarded with in regards to LHR during the summer travel season. Thanks to our “chipped” US passports, we even skipped the face-to-face immigration formalities and instead used the automated kiosks to scan our documents. Easy peasy! Our bags did take about 20 minutes to show up. But show up they did.
The Central Station at LHR is a convenient way to get a bus from the airport to Southampton … most of the time … even with the convoluted route one must follow to get to the station to begin with. We’ve done this a couple of times over the years. Alas, this year there were some hurdles to negotiate.
We found the station easily enough, but because the ticket office has been replaced with automated machines, we ran into a bit of trouble trying to change our tickets to the earlier bus departing at 6:15p. Calling National Express, as we were instructed to do, just resulted in being placed on hold … with an expected wait time of 30 minutes. Nope … no can do. Not wanting to risk missing the early bus, we decided to just buy two more tickets and plead our case with the bus company later.
Thanks to the bus being delayed in jam-packed northbound traffic on its way to LHR, we made it on with time to spare. The drive was a comfortable one … the heavy traffic heading south from LHR flowing smoothly. In fact, despite the nearly 30-minute delay leaving Central Station, we arrived in Southampton just 10 minutes behind schedule.
We knew from past experience that Uber was our best shot at getting to the hotel from the Harbor Parade Station. Sure enough. Within 15 minutes of getting off the bus, we were checking in at the Southampton Holiday Inn … the hotel that is closest to the City Cruise Terminal from where we will be embarking our ship.
Room 502 — with a view of the harbor — is rather tight space-wise. The decor is a little tired and could use a refresh. Otherwise, everything is spic-and-span clean. The bed certainly seems comfortable enough. We’ll find out if that impression is accurate once we get properly settled for the night.Leggi altro

ViaggiatoreI think maybe we will let Oceania deal with our transfer from the airport to the ship next June. we aren't the seasoned travelers that you are.

Two to TravelI just got the name of a private transfer company that is supposedly well priced. If you drop me a reminder, I will dig it out … you can compare pricing. Have to leave the ship now.

We’re Negative!

To embark the ship on Thursday, we need to not only have proof of our COVID-19 vaccines in hand, but also PCR or antigen test results showing that we are in good health.
Once we were settled into the room, we took out the e-Med testing kits we had purchased earlier this year. Using the free wi-fi provided by the hotel, we connected with testing proctors who gave us step by step instructions and watched as we followed through. Fifteen minutes later, we had what we wanted … a “single pink line” negative result for each of us!
We’re now all set for embarkation day. But first … a bit of relaxing tonight … and a bit of sightseeing tomorrow.Leggi altro

A-Wander in Southampton

Admittedly, Southampton itself doesn’t offer all that much … sightseeing-wise … especially if you’ve been there before as we have.
Of course, we could have stayed in London … but a big city wasn’t what we wanted since we had just one day prior to embarking our cruise in Southampton. Of course, we could have taken the ferry to the Isle of Wight … or done a tour that would have taken us to some of the charming towns and castles nearby. But, we just wanted an easy day to rest up after a long travel day. Southampton gave us just that today.
A tasty and filling breakfast at the Holiday Inn — included in our room rate — started off our day. Despite a light breeze, the temperature was comfortable. The early morning overcast gave way to sunshine and patchy blue skies by mid-morning. Perfect for a wander around town.
Our meander took us to old city walls … where we walked in the footsteps of yore and wondered what life was like when these same walls stood tall and strong to protect the residents. Along narrow, cobblestone streets we walked … where colorful blooms and interesting architecture charmed us. To two museums we went … the Seacity Museum offering a peek into history and the city’s connection to the ill-fated Titanic; the City Art Museum giving us a glimpse of some colorful and interesting art.
Our quest for a midday meal took us to the Duke of Wellington, an inn/pub built over the foundations of a house dating back to the 12th century … and housed in a building that dates back to around 1490. Damaged by enemy action during WWII, the inn was restored in the 1960s but has the charm of much earlier times … delicious fish & chips and an exceptional brownie served with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Yummy! Yummy!
We returned to the hotel mid-afternoon, happy and satisfied with our day of exploring Southampton … and ready to put our feet up after an 11,100-step day.Leggi altro

Viaggiatorenot sure how long we will be in Southampton but the Duke of Wellington sounds like a major choice.

National Express Comes Up to Scratch

Before we took off for our meander this morning, I sent an email to National Express to plead our case.
Basically, I was asking if they would consider refunding the second set of tickets we purchased to get on the 6:15p bus yesterday since we’d not been able to get through to them on the phone … and instructions to make changes online didn’t apply in our case. I was hoping that the fact that we’d purchased the “change and go” fare, which would have allowed us to switch to another bus within 12 hours on either side of our 9:00p tickets, would help our case.
An email response was awaiting me when we returned to the hotel after our wander around Southampton. Yes, they would refund the second set of tickets. Yay! The email went on to say that we should see the credit to the original form of purchase within five days. Double yay!Leggi altro

Embarking Celebrity Silhouette

As beautiful as the weather was yesterday, it was that crummy today … at least until late afternoon.
We woke up to decidedly chilly temps and rain, which continued on and off throughout the day. At times it was just a barely noticeable drizzle. At other times it was a downpour … usually short in duration. Keeping fingers crossed that we’d catch a break when it was time to embark Celebrity Silhouette, we went down to the dining room for our morning meal.
In fact, we did luck out a couple of times with the weather.
First, there was a break in the rain when we set off to drop off our checked bags with the longshoremen at the City Cruise Terminal. To double our luck, we found an old IKEA cart at the entrance to the port … which made managing our bags on the sidewalk that was in less than good condition much easier.
We had no desire to board the ship … it was only 10:30a and we planned to walk into town for some gelato before embarking Silhouette. But we wondered if we might be able to check-in while the terminal was still quiet. So we headed there next.
No problem … even though our check-in slot was between 1:00-1:30p. No one blinked an eye. They just directed us inside with instructions to have our passports and express passes handy. No lines anywhere … just a few passengers lallygagging here and there. Formalities took maybe 5 minutes and we were done. We would realize later just how lucky we were to have managed check-in so quickly.
Leaving the terminal, we walked out into ever-increasing rain. No can do on the walk into town for gelato. We had arranged for a late check out at noon at the Holiday Inn and left our carry-on bags there, so we returned to relax in our room for a while. A smart move, as it turns out. No sooner were we under cover that the rain really started to come down … the downpour lasting about an hour this time.
Another lucky break in the rain just as we decided to return to the terminal to embark the ship shortly after noon allowed us to walk to the City Cruise Terminal without getting wet. In fact, the clouds seemed to be moving out … the sun breaking through with patches of blue in the sky. Excellent!
Seeing the lines snaking around the waiting area inside the terminal — passengers queued up at least four deep, waiting their turn to check-in — made us appreciate our quick check-in this morning all the more. Since we’d completed the formalities already, we were allowed to skip the line with just a quick scan of our express passes and continue straight to the gangway.
The rest of our embarkation day story will be in the next footprint …Leggi altro

Aboard & Settled In

It’s been a while since we were last on a big ship … four years since we were last on a Celebrity ship … five years since Silhouette returned us to the US by way of another westbound TransAtlantic (that one from Civitavecchia to Ft Lauderdale).
Our first contacts with the crew were with those tasked with selling drink and specialty dining packages. Oh, and yes, the photographers who wanted to take our embarkation photo. “No thanks,” we said in every instance and kept going.
We made our way directly to our stateroom — #6304 on deck 6 aft. It’s a typical veranda stateroom … except that the veranda is larger than most … deep enough to keep us protected from the elements in the days ahead should that become necessary. Perfect for someone like me who spends every spare moment sitting out … reading … writing … solving crossword puzzles. Even better … for enjoying wine and snacks without mingling with the crowds.
A magnetic sign on the door encouraged us to leave our bags and enjoy the ship while housekeeping put the finishing touches on preparing our stateroom. We wanted to get a bite to eat anyway, so we grabbed our keycards and made our way up to the Oceanview Café. Taking advantage of the now comfortable temps, we took our food out to the open terrace to enjoy an al fresco meal before returning to the stateroom
We were happy to spot our three bags standing at various points along the hallway on deck 6. We grabbed them and got to work settling in. The sooner that was accomplished, the sooner we could begin enjoying the veranda.
By the time everything was stowed away, it was 3:45p … the ship would be leaving her berth in 15 minutes. Time to crack open the bottle of Kavaklıdere Egeo red we had brought with us. Mui poured the wine and brought out some snacks from his stash. All set to enjoy happy hour on the veranda as the ship sailed out of Southampton Harbor.
Not so fast! Just at that moment, Captain Georgios Iatrou [Capt G] came on the P/A to advise of a delay due to ongoing provisioning of the ship’s stores for the eventual crossing in a week’s time. Alrighty then … we will enjoy the wine anyway. With the sun playing peek-a-boo, we were definitely comfy on the veranda … the temp at 75F. Perfect.
At 6:00p, with Silhouette still tied up at her berth, we went down to Grand Cuvée (the main dining room) for dinner. A nice change since we were last on a Celebrity ship … jeans are now allowed in the dining room for dinner. Not that we plan to wear jeans every night, but it was nice not to have to change clothes tonight.
While we were at dinner, Silhouette finally moved out of her berth to begin the 800.8-NM trip to Lisbon … at 6:30p … 2½ hours later than scheduled. With Capt G’s announcement that we were throwing off our bow lines, we also got some bad news.
It looks like tomorrow’s day at sea is going to be a rough one. Capt G mentioned winds in the 55-65 knot range and waves up to 18 feet. Not too big a deal for us as we have been in worse conditions. But there was a brief mention of possibly having to skip Lisbon, our port of call two days hence, in order to get to Tenerife on time four days hence. Capt G sort of glossed over that bit of news, saying that he was consulting with HQ in Miami and would have an announcement for us tomorrow.
What can I say? We have no control over the conditions. So we’ll roll with whatever punches the weather throws at us. In the meantime, let’s just enjoy the veranda before calling it a day.Leggi altro

Jiggly Day at Sea

As we enter the northern edge of the Bay of Biscay …
We got a good night’s rest with little noticeable motion of the ocean. Mui, as usual, was up way early and went for an Americano (or two) at Café al Bacio … specialty coffees and teas are an included perk for passengers who have reached Elite+ level in the Captain’s Club. I forced myself to stay abed until 7:00a.
Normally, we prefer to grab breakfast on the terrace outside the Oceanview Café. However, since it was quite chilly outside — low 50F range … with strong winds against which the outer decks were off-limits to passengers — we treated ourselves to breakfast at the Grand Cuvée instead.
After our morning meal, we climbed the stairs — 9 flights — up to the pool deck. With the weather chilly, the outdoor pool was deserted, but there were a number of people in the covered Solarium despite the early hour. We weren’t there to swim, however. Rather, I just wanted to pick up some wool lap blankets to use on the veranda on chilly days like today.
We were in the reception area on deck 3 when Capt G came on the P/A for his 9:45a daily announcement. The bottomline is that we are following behind a storm today (probably one reason for the delayed departure yesterday) and hope to get ahead of another west-to-east storm that is expected to impact our sailing tomorrow.
Aside from walking around all the public decks — both to re-familiarize ourselves with Silhouette and to get some exercise — we spent the day at home, so to speak. There are a lot of activities in which we could participate. But our plan is to stay away from the crowds as much as possible. After all, COVID-19 is still a “real thing” even if the pandemic is considered over. Mui did venture out to watch today’s matinee movie — “Downton Abbey: A New Era” — but seeing the movie a second time wasn’t enough of a lure to get me to part with the veranda … even if I did have to bundle up with wool blankets.
With so many Captain’s Club’s members aboard — we heard over 1,000 Elite+ alone — the Captain’s Club Cocktail Hour (another included perk for us) is not being held in a specific lounge on this cruise. Rather, one can go to just about any bar, present key cards, and get drinks at no charge between 5:00-7:00p. Mui got us some red wine and we drank it in our stateroom with the snacks we brought along.
Since we wanted to see the 7:00p show, dinner tonight was a quick bite at the Oceanview Café instead of taking the time to dine at the Grand Cuvée. This will likely be our modus operandi when we want to attend the early show instead of going to the one at 9:00p.
Tonight’s headliner was Jayne Curry, a vocalist from the UK. Her show was a mix of comedy and music. The woman has great stage presence and great “pipes.” Attendance at tonight’s show was light, but I would bet that will change as word gets out. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the side-view seating area on the deck 4 balcony will remain fairly unoccupied so we can stay away from the crowds.
The second day of our cruise is thus wrapped up. It was a jiggly day for sure … especially later in the afternoon when the motion of the ocean became quite noticeable. Tonight there’s quite a bit of banging and clanging against the hull as Silhouette cleaves through the waves. That said, the ship is handling the conditions pretty well. What tomorrow will bring is TBD.Leggi altro

Jiggly Day at Sea … Again

Along the Coast of Portugal …
Overnight, Silhouette must have sped through the Bay of Biscay as this morning we woke up to find the ship sailing south along the coast of Spain … with some 300+ NM left to reach Lisbon. The Captain had mentioned in a video interview last night that he was hoping for a patch of calmer conditions that would allow him to make some real headway after battling the rough seas during the day. Obviously, he got his wish.
As for today … we still bounced our way down along the Iberian Peninsula. It was overcast once again when the skies lightened up this morning. At one point, the wind was so strong that the rain was falling horizontally across the front of our veranda. We did have a clearing of the skies in the afternoon — just like yesterday — but the wind was just too strong and too chilly for me to attempt to sit out today. Keeping fingers crossed that as we continue to make our way south, conditions will improve.
Our daily routine pretty much followed yesterday … breakfast at the Grand Cuvée; indoor exercise by walking up and down the staircases and around the public spaces; lunch for Mui at the Oceanview Café while I abstained so as not feel to guilty when we have snacks at our private happy hour.
I pretty much stayed in the stateroom reading and writing most of the day. Mui stepped out to check out the cooking demonstration at the Tuscan Grille … how to cook the perfect fish. Turns out the Executive Sous Chef, Halim … from Türkiye’s Black Sea Region, was doing the cooking. He is apparently the only Turkish crew member aboard Silhouette.
Tonight’s dress code was what Celebrity now terms as “chic.” It allows those who want to dress up formally to do so. Others can dress things up a bit more than the smart casual that is acceptable on other nights … dressy jeans allowed. Our days of formal wear are long, long over. But we did get gussied up before venturing out for dinner at the Grand Cuvée.
Chic night also means that there is a production show on the main stage. We missed the early show. Neither one of us was in the mood to wait around to attend the 9:00p show, so we returned to our stateroom after dinner. Might have been a good show … but I wasn’t keen on sitting in a darkened room very near the bow when the ship is dancing around as much as it has been this evening, so no regrets.
Tomorrow we make land in Lisbon!Leggi altro

Lisbon: Azulejos & A-Wander

Silhouette was already docked at the Lisbon Cruise Terminal when Mui came to wake me up. The first words out of his mouth were, “5G signal.” Aha! T-Mobile was on. He’d already been up and checking his emails and the news.
A quick breakfast on port days works best for us. So, we went up to the Oceanview Café to sate our tummies. Then it was time to set off to explore Lisbon.
The sightseeing plan today was a loose one … with one particular goal … the Museu Nacional do Azulejo … the National Tile Museum. I’d hoped to visit the museum when we overnighted in Lisbon in 2017. But with the location of the museum on the other side of the city from everything else we had on our list, we never got there. I was going to rectify that today. Anything else we got to do would be a bonus.
The walk from the terminal to the museum was pleasant enough … flat along the waterfront, with a slight elevation gain as we got into the hillside neighborhoods. Maybe about 30-45 minutes.
“The azulejo is an identity art of Portugal.” Those were the words that greeted us when we entered the old Madre de Deus Convent (founded in 1509) where the museum is housed. The tiles have been used uninterruptedly throughout the past five centuries and the museum is designed as a place where one can begin to appreciate this heritage.
Appreciate and enjoy is exactly what we did. The €5 admission (half that for Mui as a senior 😉) was definitely worth it. The three hours we spent studying and photographing the beautiful tilework — especially the “Great Lisbon Panorama,” which depicts the city as it was prior to the earthquake of 1755 — went by in the blink of an eye.
From the museum, we began a meandering walk back towards the main part of the city. Our goal, as we walked up and down the hills and along narrow roads, was to locate the restaurant Mui had selected for lunch. We got very close, but after about 1.5 miles, decided we were going to be too rushed if we insisted on getting there. After all, it was nearing 2:00p already.
Instead, we decided to meander down towards the port and find someplace else along the way. Somehow we had made our way into Lisbon’s popular Alfama neighborhood. Here, on a narrow cobblestone street, we came across a small café — Antù. Tucked into an alcove overlooking the street, it was exactly what we were looking for.
Tasty food … a pitcher of red sangria with plenty of berries … a charming local ambiance (I think we were one of the few tourists there). What more could we have asked for? Well, maybe octopus for Mui … but he was more than happy with the bacalhau à brás (bacalao) he ordered — salted cod mixed with rice … almost like a seafood risotto … an easy introduction for those who haven't had the chance to explore salted cod yet. No complaints whatsoever.
Continuing down the narrow, winding street after our meal, we turned a corner and found ourselves across the road from Silhouette. Excellent. Embarking the ship, we had time to spend on the veranda before sailaway … checking messages and sharing newly-made memories with family and friends.
And now, it’s time for us to take Celebrity up on a special invitation … more about that in the next footprint.Leggi altro

The National Tile Museum looks fantastic, Erin! What a great idea for your return visit itinerary. I will add it to the list! We loved Lisbon and would love to go back – even if only for a delicious pastéis de nata! 😊 [Mary O. Greenberg]

Helipad Sailaway on the Rio Tejo

Yesterday, we received an invitation from Natalia, the Captain’s Club Concierge, to enjoy today’s sailaway from Lisbon on the helipad.
I’m not sure who qualifies for an invite for this event. We’ve enjoyed similar invitations of this nature on previous Celebrity cruises since becoming Elite+ … in Santorini, Greece and Stockholm, Sweden.
I’m not sure how we made the cut for this particular sailaway instead of the two others that are still ahead of us. But I’m glad we did because this one saw Silhouette cruising the Rio Tejo — aka the Tagus River … the longest such body of water on the Iberian Peninsula — in order to get back to the Atlantic.
The event almost didn’t happen, however. You see, the forecasted rain, which held off and allowed us to explore Lisbon unhindered, began just as the watertight doors opened to let us out onto the helipad. Luckily, the downpour was of short duration … and the crew managed to squeegee the helipad quickly. So, we got a last minute reprieve.
The ships’ slow speed kept the wind down to a minimum, thus we had an enjoyable two hours for the scenic cruising as we sipped the bubbly that was being served by circulating waiters. Once at the mouth of the river, it was time for Silhouette to pick-up speed and for us to leave the helipad. Surprise … we were amongst the very few people who were still on deck. We’d been so intent on the scenery on either side of us that we had not noticed everyone else leaving.
It was nearing 6:30p when we left the helipad. Instead of returning to our stateroom, we went up to the Oceanview Café for a light snack before heading to the theater for the 7:00p show headlining King Jamesheed — a British entertainer … pianist and vocalist … and a bit of a funnyman. We enjoyed his performance and would love to see him perform again. Alas, he is leaving the ship in Tenerife.
So, here we are, swaying left and right again as Capt G warned us that we would. He did promise better weather for tomorrow, however 🤞🏻.
(P.S. Sorry about the quality of the attached photos … with only my phone with me on this trip, I attempted to take some zoom videos to capture frames for still shots. Didn’t work out well.)Leggi altro

Viaggiatorewhat a treat! and the photis are great no matter. curious how many others were invited to the helipad.

Two to TravelThey had a group out there for the three sailaways after we left Southampton. Not sure how many in all, but I do know there were over 1,000 Elite and above, which would have all been invited … top down.

A Day @ Sea

Overnight we rock ‘n rolled a bit, but by this morning the seas were much calmer … as promised by Capt G. There are dead rollers for sure … but nothing like the seas, nor the winds, we had during the first two days of this cruise. Hopefully, good weather will prevail from here on out.
Nothing much to write about today.
We followed our usual sea day routine this morning … with just a few changes. We went up to the Oceanview Café for breakfast instead of the dining room. Then we put in our steps to get some exercise. Nowhere near the 19,172 steps we walked yesterday, but better than sitting on our butts all day long. On our way back to the cabin, we stopped in at the Tuscan Grill for fruit and tea at the Captain’s Club breakfast … a special perk for those who are Elite and above in the loyalty program.
I pretty much spent the day in the cabin … or rather, on the veranda since it was a lovely day with the skies ever-brightening although the clouds never fully disappeared. It was certainly warm enough to sit outside comfortably. I skipped lunch when Mui went up to grab a bite to eat … makes me feel less guilty about snacking when we have our “happy hour on the veranda.”
After dinner at the Grand Cuvée, we went to the 7:00p show headlining Mark Donoghue, a multi-instrumentalist described in “Celebrity Today” as “… one of the most significant artists to emerge on the contemporary international cabaret and concert scene.” He put on an excellent show that started out with a medley of old spaghetti western movie themes and ended with a medley of Abba songs that had people dancing in their seats.
Tomorrow is the second of the three ports of call on this cruise.Leggi altro

Santa Cruz De Tenerife: A-Wander

With a 4:00p sailaway, we had a short day in port for what was our second time visiting Santa Cruz de Tenerife (SCdeT). Part of it experienced on our own … part of it with friends.
When we were in SCdeT in 2017, friends — Manuela & Wolfgang — took us around the island, stopping to visit Teide National Park, before having lunch and enjoying the beautiful views from their terrace. We had plans to get together for lunch again, but first we had a bit of time to explore the city on our own.
Our first stop was at the information office to pick up a map. Since the weather was lovely, with comfy temps, we decided to skip the museums and enjoy our time outdoors — stopping for photos at Iglesia de la Concepcion; checking out the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de Africa (housed in La Recova) … from where we got some delicious gelato and I left with three lava stone bracelets; strolling streets lined with shops where the locals do their shopping; taking a break at the Plaza Principe de Asturias … where my photo-finger was entertained by a couple of statues and a fountain; taking a peek inside Iglesia de San Francisco. That pretty much filled the 2½ hours we had before our lunch date.
Retracing our steps back to Plaza d’España, we met up with Manuela and Wolfgang. They suggested we dine at one of the restaurants at Plaza de San Francisco. We settled on Plaza 18 when we arrived and took one of the tables on the street for a delightful meal. Sharing a pitcher of sangria, we reminisced about the experiences we shared on our world cruise in 2017 … and talked about future travel plans. The chatter was nonstop … as was the laughter. It was great seeing them again.
Alas, the time passed all too quickly. By 3:00p, Manuela & Wolfgang were dropping us off at the entrance to the port. Here’s to meeting again … somewhere … sometime.Leggi altro

Gorgeous Sunset!

Though darkness has enveloped us, it is 72F now at 8:40p … comfortable enough to sit on the veranda. I have my fingers crossed that most of the nights ahead of us will find me in this very chair on the veranda … legs stretched out on the footstool … writing about our day … or just reading.
As it turns out, Silhouette was a bit late leaving port … about 30 minutes … not sure why. By then, we were enjoying the Montepulciano red Mui brought aboard for those days when we don’t wish to wait for the 5:00p Captain’s Club Social in order to get our wine.
After a quick bite at the Oceanview Café, we went to the theater for the evening performance headlining the Flyboys … a vocal quartet. They described their arrangements as a combination of vintage and modern music. Unfortunately, they fell flat for us, so we left the show after the second song.
Turns out that was a good move on our part as we wrapped up the day with beautiful sunset skies … which, as I understand it, had turned the entire ocean pink just moments before we walked out onto the promenade deck. The evening light, reflected on the surface of the Atlantic, was nothing short of amazing.
Tomorrow is another port of call … our last one prior to our 7-day crossing back to the US.Leggi altro

Two to TravelNothing worth mentioning. I find myself often getting distracted when reading on the veranda and losing the train of what I was reading, so I pick up some mindless book to read from the library. Silhouette’s library was pitiful, though.

Viaggiatorewell Barbara Kingsolvers new book is incredible. Demon Copperhead. first book in a long time that kept me awake into the night. maybe one for your upcoming cruise.

Funchal: A-Wander

Funchal was still a-twinkle as Silhouette began its approach to Funchal, Madeira Island. A quick memory shot of the city and then it was time to grab a bite to eat. By the time we were done, the skies were brightening … the sun coloring the clouds as it tried to break through the clouds.
The closer we got to shore, the more apparent the clouds wreathing the tops of the mountains became. Hmmm! It looked like Capt G’s forecast for rain was going to hold true. But tiny patches of blue in the sky gave us hope that we wouldn’t have to contend with liquid sunshine the entire time we were in port.
Madeira Island is part of the archipelago by the same name … situated in the North Atlantic. Funchal, the capital city, is a very popular stop for passenger ships doing the southerly crossing from Europe to their winter cruising grounds in the Americas. Today was our second visit to Funchal this year … our fourth visit since the first time we called on this Madeiran city in 2003 when we did our very first TransAtlantic … with mom joining us for that cruise.
The beauty of returning to a place we’ve visited before is that we’re familiar with how to get around and what to do. That makes it easy to rethink sightseeing plans as circumstances might warrant. In this instance, since it was obviously raining in the mountains, we decided to nix taking the tram up to Monte to visit the Botanical Gardens. Instead, we came up with the idea of walking towards the golden yellow fortress at the far end of the waterfront promenade and explore on foot parts of the city we’d not been to before.
Deciding to save our feet from the wear and tear we expected them to endure during today’s wanderings, we hopped on the complimentary shuttle bus organized by Celebrity to take passengers into town.
From where we were dropped off at La Vie Mall, it was an easy, flat walk into the city center via Avenida Arriaga … the main drag. We didn’t make it far before we noticed the municipal gardens and went in for a quick wander. While I took photos of the colorful blooms, Mui made himself comfortable at the café where he ordered his first pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart) of the day … and a cortado (espresso mixed with a roughly equal amount of warm milk).
From the gardens, we took a meandering route through the city. Walking along Funchal’s cobblestone backstreets — paved with black and write stones — we enjoyed the quiet morning. With this being a 3-ship day, that peaceful ambiance wasn’t going to last long, so we made the most of it while we could.
Eventually, we made it down to the waterfront promenade, which pretty much dead-ends at the São Tiago Fortress. Once we reached the fortifications, we dropped down to the small terrace overlooking a rocky beach to check out the waves crashing ashore … and the hardy souls swimming in the cold Atlantic waters. Then, slowly, up into the hillside streets we wandered, eventually coming to the Esplanada do Atlântico … a quick peek into the Igreja de Santa Maria Major … a break at a café overlooking the ocean for some empanadas and pastéis de nata.
When we retraced our steps down the street that we had climbed up, we found ourselves at the head of a street we had explored in April … Rua de Santa Maria … home to the Arte de Portas Abertas, aka the painted doors. This time, however, we were at the far end that we had not checked out the first time. After walking the unfamiliar portion of the street, we detoured to another back street and kept walking.
Getting a sweet treat from a gelateria to boost our flagging energy, we decided to make our way towards the port. It was 1:00p by this time. While the sun was still bright and there was plenty of blue sky above us, some of the clouds were changing from white to an ominous grey. And there were occasional sprinkles falling. Time to get back to the ship.
By 2:00p we were onboard … ensconced in a couple of deckchairs on the portside promenade instead of our starboard veranda … both for the city views and the stronger cell signal. Here we enjoyed sitting out for a while, watching the clouds move down the mountain tops to the foothills. By 3:00p, as we were sipping our tea, rain was falling on Funchal. Quite a downpour it was … but we were warm and dry where we sat watching mother nature in action.
We had a wonderful day in Funchal today. I’m sure it won’t be our last time here since we enjoy returning home by way of a TransAtlantic Cruise.Leggi altro

The Crossing Begins

Shortly before 4:00p, we set up our wine and snacks on the veranda … in preparation for the 4:30p sailaway. Turns out that by 4:15p we were out in open seas. Our early departure was probably aided by the downpour that had everyone scurrying back to the warmth and comfort of Silhouette.
With the Celebrity app showing a comedian/magician performing tonight, we decided we didn’t have to hurry through dinner to make the 7:00p show. Hah! Turns out that my app had not updated to show that the headliner was a vocalist from the USA … Leslie McDonel … a performer of “sultry standards.” So, we did end up rushing a bit … but it was worth it. Leslie, who has performed in several Broadway shows, and at the Grammy and Tony Awards, has a vocal prowess that is to be admired.
Returning to the cabin after the show, I made myself comfortable on the veranda … where I am now. It’s a tiny bit cooler tonight … 70F. A wool lap blanket is all I need to keep me cozy. There’s a bit more motion to the ocean … and the wind, which Capt G said would be blowing at 30 knots, is stronger too. But Silhouette is handling both well enough.
The ship has turned its bow westward. That will now be the general direction in which we will be traveling … with a slight slant to the south as we make our way to Florida. No more time on land for us until we arrive in Miami and disembark the ship on 3 November.

Atlantic Crossing … Day 1

I am sitting in my favorite place on the ship. Our veranda. It’s pitch dark … the stars twinkling in the sky. The temperature is a cozy 73F. The motion of the ocean has increased since earlier today. Dead rollers … but at times big enough to make the ship dance. The weather was overall good … went through a squall this morning and was rewarded with a rainbow.
Today we began to use our free minutes of internet — an Elite+ perk. I set up my account at breakfast and logged in to check emails and social media. Not much in either case. My usage today was all of about 25 minutes, so the 240 minutes should last for the duration of what remains of the cruise … easily.
This first day of the crossing was a quiet one. I didn’t do much more than sit on the veranda … writing at times … reading at other times. Mui ventured out to Chef Halim’s cooking demo at 11:00a … how to cook the best steak. When we get home, I expect him to put into practice what he learned today.
Since it was “chic night,” we got gussied up a bit and went to the dining room around 5:30p so we could get to the 7:00p show. On special nights like this one, Celebrity puts on a production-style show. This one was entitled “Cosmopolitan.” We should have just skipped it. Far from living up to the hype of “… giving us an olympic postcard adventure to enlighten the senses …” it fell flat on its face IMHO. The dancing was more like strutting on stage … the vocalists, well they were less than impressive. I walked out after the first three acts … Mui joined me in the cabin about 10 minutes later..
But you know, I don’t care that the show was an “olympic fail.” I’d rather be on the veranda anyway. And now that I have finished today’s story, I’m going to read and enjoy the sounds of the ocean around me.
Distance Remaining to Miami: 2,788 NM

Atlantic Crossing … Day 2

Really, I have nothing to write about. Well, nothing exciting that is.
After an exceptionally rocky night, we were both up early this morning. Instead of going up to the Oceanview Café for breakfast, we went down to Grand Cuvée … a nice change of pace.
The rest of the day found me on the veranda … except to get some exercise by walking around the ship since it was too windy to go out on the jogging track. Mui had lunch at the Oceanview Café … brought me back sometime light to nibble on. Happy hour on the veranda after Mui woke up from his nap.
For dinner, we went down to Grand Cuvée. We went a little later since we had no desire to go to the show featuring the Flyboys (remember, we were disappointed the first time around). We had just finished ordering our meal when Chef Halim stopped by to say hi. He’s been asking if he could prepare us something special. Since we were just beginning our meal, he insisted on preparing a popular Turkish salad … çoban salatası (shepherd’s salad). A nice gesture that we appreciated.
And that’s a wrap of our second day at sea … which will see us falling back another hour … for a total two-hour gain thus far.
