An inauspicious start

Early up and out, with a clear run to Manchester, the morning all went smoothly. So much so we sat with Flight Radar in the airport identifying the planes taking off and landing whilst we waited for departure.

As we came into land over Athens, the gusting winds gave some turbulence and ultimately just feet off the runway the pilot pulled up steeply and we went around the circuit again...causing a few raised heartrates! Second time lucky and then through customs much quicker than last time we were here, and without yhe drunkely narrated history of Greek mythology. 31° and climbing, Athens here we come!Les mer

An afternoon in Athens

After freshening up in the hotel, we headed out into the mid-afternoon heat and immediately felt not fresh anymore! We wandered by Hadrian's Gate, Parliament, Syntagma, Hadrian's Library, Monastiraki, and towards Psirri for food. Po Boys BBQ was a superb stop, both for the food and to get out of the heat. Just ten minutes further we popped to Olympias rooftop bar once again for some wine and stellar views of the Acropolis. Hampered only by a lack of white wine, a bloody massive wasp/hornet thing that took a liking to Ben, and me throwing a glass of wine over Kev with some wild gesturing!
The dusk walk home was pleasant but also affirmed our general approach to holidays that we do stuff in the day and retire to somewhere quiet in the evening...Saturday night in Athens is absolutely heaving. We dodged pedestrians, cars, and restaurateurs as we headed home to recover from a 2am start and 30-some-odd degree heat.Les mer

Wandering Athens

A walk out before a midday transfer to port. After an early breakfast we tried to take advantage of the coolness of the morning - it was not cool! We wandered through the Plaka which was a world of difference to last night - gone were the pavements full of diners and shops spilling into the street. Instead, a serene morning stroll under creeping ivy laden walls and beautiful blue skies. Around the perimeter of Ancient Agora and the slopes of the Acropolis, before passing through Athens first cemetery on the way back to the hotel for a well-needed shower!Les mer

Piraeus

The taxi arrived on time, interrupting our game of crib! Mercifully at the port we were not only able to drop our luggage, but also take advantage of the free shuttle into Piraeus...which given it was 35° was a godsend! We walked around the marina to Monte Carlo bar for a sea-breeze laden drink or two, before the shuttle bus back to the ship. We'd been allocated slightly different check-in times, so we smuggled Mum and Kev in with us, although her honesty nearly gave us away! The set up, as last time, was very impressive. Although there were queues you were constantly moving and the port was air conditioned. Resilient Lady - here we come!Les mer

Ain't no party like a sailaway party

We toured the ship before popping up to the pool decks for some free bubbles and a sailaway party! And were treated to a glorious sunset. Gunbae for dinner - Korean BBQ, with more food than was reasonable! We tried everything from the kimchi fried rice, to seafood pancakes and sesame ice cream, and it was all superb. The path out of Athens was hit with strong winds which occasionally caught the ship, but otherwise a very peaceful sail into our first sea day tomorrow.Les mer

Dardanelles on Fire

A lazy day of trivia and music quiz (we didn't win), arcade games, and sleeping in the hammock. Ben battled through 13km on the treadmill whilst I manfully ate a pizza on the balcony. The evening began with a hold outside the Dardanelles Straits due to wildfires and aircraft battling it. Three days ago the BBC reported the fires actually closed the Straits. Our Captain seems hopeful, but for now we wait.

Dardanelle Straits

A lovely bottle of Tassajara cabernet sauvignon to start the evening, before a fabulous dinner in the Wake. Ben had the bone marrow and steak again, but all the food was lovely, albeit I couldn't finish my polenta. During the meal we got the clearance to enter the Straits. Given that the Straits are only 1.2km wide, during the main course we could see the wildfires from our table - the size of the fires was astounding. Further along, we passed the two castles for which the Straits are named, and were treated to an incredibly large moon on the horizon from our balcony. A later dock in Istanbul tomorrow due to the delay but we planned to start the day later anyway due to all the excursions leaving.Les mer

We walked first to Galata tower as we are ported in the new city. A lucky first stop as it was uphill and I'm not sure we'd have managed it by the end of the day. The heat wasn't as stifling as in Athens. Across Galata bridge towards the old city, we watched the men fishing and the jellyfish in the water below before stopping at the spice market just beyond the bridge.Les mer

Meandering through the busy streets, we went on a more coastal path around to the famous buildings of Istanbul. As we rounded the coast, Ben spotted a submarine coming across the port under the statue of Ataturk, which was a first for all of us. Up into beautiful Gulhane Park, the tall trees along the avenues provided plenty of shade as we passed alongside Topkapi Palace.Les mer

Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque

The Hagia Sofia looked much more worn than we remembered it. The large square outside wasn't thronging with tourists but then we didn't go to the ticket line, and given the lengthy queues outside the Basilica Cistern, perhaps the queues were there instead. The blossom-lined avenue between Hagia Sofia and Blue Mosque was perfect for photos, and we wandered inside the main walls of the Blue Mosque for the first time too.Les mer

Grand Bazaar, Istanbul

Heading towards the Grand Bazaar, we passed the most fabulous little art shop with beautiful pictures from floor to ceiling. I could have bought everything but settled for a small-ish (nearly A4) line drawing of whirling dervishes for 250tl (about £5). The Grand Bazaar was massive and busy but less frenetic than it was made out to be. The different sections were interesting, with the oldest section and its brick roof structure being notably cooler than the rest of the market. We headed home in the early afternoon whilst the heat was still very passable, for a relaxing afternoon on the ship.Les mer

Taksim Square and the New City

I wanted to see the historic trams, so we grabbed the funicular up to Taksim Square, after some minor faff trying to work out the ticketing process. We were lucky to see a tram almost as soon as we arrived! The tracks run through a major shopping street in the new city, so we followed them and popped into a few shops on the way, before grabbing a beer. On the way out, a tram was just departing back to Taksim Square, so we jumped on board for the five stops that made up the length of the line. Back down the funicular, we climbed the dock-side hill for beautiful views of our ship and Istanbul.Les mer

At Sea 🌊

A strange sort of sea day, as it was A Level results day. We'd booked breakfast in at a restaurant for a change and it was delightful. Offering three courses (!) for breakfast was bold, especially when the steak and eggs I had was massive on its own! I left a little early to pull the university places off at 7am GMT (9am our time). So the morning was spent in the cabin helping students, crunching data, and researching Clearing, before a lull allowed us to grab a takeaway pizza to enjoy on the balcony for lunch. We were sailing very, very slowly, drifting past the Greek island of Chios for much of the day. It got so hot outside however we had to hide indoors, before a game of crib in the Loose Cannon. From the window, you could see the smoke from the wildfires on Chios. We attempted to play shuffleboard on the way back to the cabin, but it's harder than it looks! Dinner in Pink Agave (Mexican) tonight - BEST dinner of the week! Plus, they had a DJ playing brilliant tunes throughout dinner service. Rounding off the night, we popped into The Manor for Lola's Library cabaret. Unsure what to expect, but it was a brilliantly funny acrobatic and dance cabaret. Quite the unexpectedly fabulous day!

Ephesus

An early-ish start this morning as we joined a shore excursion to Ephesus with our excellent guide, Suzet. She guided us through the ruins, from the baths to the library and the Great Theatre, identifying differences in Greek, Roman, and Byzantine occupation. Apparently Ephesus used to represent pretty much the shoreline, but it is quite far inland today. Stopping at a reconstructed temple, we learnt the popular nazar beads/symbols that protect against the evil eye supposedly represent the striking blue eyes of Medusa, who adorned the temple pediment. All of the standing ruins represented only reconstructions following the destruction of the site by earthquakes after it had been abandoned, and much reconstruction was still going on. The extensive white marble was apparently local, with much of the world's white marble coming from Turkey. The Grand Theatre was apparently being held together by cranes after the volume concerts by Sting and Diana Ross split the foundations of the 24,000 seater stadium. We had decided on the shorter excursion, not including the House of Virgin Mary which apparently was fortuitous as today was Assumption Day and would have therefore been very busy. Despite being the height of tourist season, Ephesus was not as busy as we expected, and the views (and weather) were beautiful.Les mer

Back in the port town of Kusadisi, our excursion ended with a visit to a Turkish carpet shop. Not necessarily what we'd have picked, but it was really interesting with a spinning and weaving demonstration, and explanation of the different blends. That said, whilst the prices of handmade silk carpets reflected the work involved, the costs of large carpets ran into the many, many thousands! One of the carpets shown apparently took four women three years to make, and the store acts as a cooperative. Back in time for lunch and out of the midday heat.Les mer

A lazy afternoon sleeping in the hammock and watching TV in the cabin. Sunset was beautiful as we pulled away from Kusadisi. Dinner in the final of six restaurants tonight - Razzle Dazzle. Lovely starters of tuna, pork belly, and chicken wings, and Ben had a fantastic lamb shank for main. We popped into the Red Room to see the Mind Mangler show, a funny magic show where everything goes wrong. To Mykonos tomorrow for a meandering day in the small town there.Les mer

Mykonos

We ported in Mykonos this morning alongside three other ships, totalling 10,000 passengers! No real plans for the day other than wandering the narrow alleyways of the whitewashed buildings. Strolling Little Venice, we stopped by the famous windmills and along the coastline. The streets alternated between shops thronging with tourists to alleyways of houses with no one at all on them. We found the Townhouse Bar overlooking the port for a beer to enjoy this beautiful little stop.Les mer

By the time we left Mykonos, all the other ships had already left. After a lazy afternoon, dinner was in the Italian Extra Virgin, and the first meal we managed to leave without feeling like we'd eaten too much. After a drink on the back deck in the warm night air, we saw our third show of the cruise. Ben Price's mentalism/comedy show was very funny and well worth stopping to see.Les mer

Medieval Rhodes

The cruise port was only a 10-minute walk from Rhodes old town, so we had fabulous views of the city from our balcony as we came into dock. The last time we were in Rhodes, we bought our wedding rings! Crossing under the city walls through the Virgin Mary Gate, the beauty of this UNESCO-listed city was immediately evident with the ruins of the Church of the Virgin Mary of the Burgh. Cobbled streets, crenellated walls, and gargoyles line the rambling streets throughout the old town. As we were out at the start of the day, the shops hadn't yet spilled into the streets, and we walked through the old town to the famous Street of the Knights of Rhodes, leading up to the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights. I found a lovely little shop on the way selling beautiful postcards of Greek goddesses. The alleyways and arches linking the streets throughout the old town were especially beautiful.Les mer
