Kayak Training Camp

Three years ago on our Balkan trip Julia and I fell in love with Bovec, a little town in the Slovenian alps. Most of all, we enjoyed our kayak day back then and decided to come back and learn how to properly manage white water kayaking.
Well, the day has come. We signed up for three days of intensive private kayak school with the best guide ever: Marton from Hungary.

Julia and I are hiking up to see the impressive Boka waterfall up close today. We already gave it a try yesterday, but due to an upcoming thunderstorm had to turn around.
It's a really steep hill to climb and we need to hurry in order not to miss our afternoon kayak class. The view at the top however is breathtaking and totally worth each of the many drops of sweat 😍Les mer

Another steep hike, today together with the guys and through a rocky mountain path at 2499m brings us up to the "window" with views from mount Prestreljenik to both sides of the Kanin mountains.

Mangart

Our original idea was to drive up the Mangart and then do the via ferrata (dt.: Klettersteig). As the parking was full, we had to leave the car "a little" further down, meaning 12km and 1300m in elevation of an additional hike to get to our planned starting point. Unfortunately we did not do the via ferrata anymore, but still I got some nice pictures of the view.
Also, check out the very aggressive sheep that would try to steel our food and even when we had packed it all away kept trying to climb on our table.Les mer

Vienna Day & Night

Back on the road! After the week in Bovec I had to go back to work for two weeks. Now Mariano and I are travelling through Austria and Slovakia.
Our first stop is Vienna, starting friday. What was planned just as a short "bucket list" visit turned out to be a dip into one of the, if not the most liveable city I have ever seen. Instead of being the kind of rusty, stiff, opera-loving pensioner's paradise we associated with Vienna, it is just a really cool melting pot with a thousand things to do. For a truck load of pictures, please check out Google. We were just having way too good of a time to take many ourselves.

For the mandatory itinerary part: the city visit started with a free walking tour, which has become a tradition for city trips. There, we made friends with two Austrians (Klaus and Clemens) that have lived in Vienna for a few years, but due to their job haven't seen a lot of it. At the end of the tour, the four of us went to a traditional Viennese coffee house, and then on to have dinner and some beers down at the Danube.
We also met again the next day. Mariano and I took the day to take a swim in the new Danube (Neue Donau) and visit Brunnenmarkt, a street market in the 9th district with a lot of fruits, vegetables, cheese and middle eastern specialties. For instance, we tried some fabulous pita bread (literally) fresh from the oven and Arab coffee. Afterwards, we went up to the vineyards to have some wine with the guys at "Heurige" (dt.: Weinschänke) and ended up to get back to the hostel at 4 a.m.
Not surprisingly, today started not too early. We only had a late breakfast before we go to the Freud museum (very interesting) and for some typical Viennese Sachertorte.Les mer

Hundertwasser

Friedensreich Hundertwasser was one of the most famous Austrian artists. The most characteristic aspects of his design include intense colors, non-repetitiveness and the refusal to use straight lines, even in architecture. Consequently, the buildings he designed - three of which we visited today in Vienna - consist of colorful, curvy walls and floors, with a lot of plants integrated on the sides and the roof (Hundertwasser was also an ecological activist and made his materials from natural resources).
In the afternoon, we met with Klaus at Prater, an amusement park right in the city center and did some screaming on the rides. The most chill of them was a chairoplane (dt.: Kettenkarussell) that gave an incredible view of the entire city (but was just reeeeaaally high 🙈). We did, however, to other ones where you were twisted and turned really fast and felt like falling out of your seat from very high.
A little recommendation on the side: if you want to have a not too expensive student-style meal (or just some simple beers at a place that does not at all remind of the Viennese Opera style), try out Käuzchen.Les mer

We got the chance to witness the first morning training of the season at the Spanish riding school, Vienna's traditional horse training and breeding ground, which was founded by the emperor Karl VI.

Crazy Slovakia

On it goes to Slovakia, more specifically just a tiny hop across the border to Bratislava. Most of what we saw and learned here was during a free walking tour. Let me sum it up for you:
1. Slovakians are crazy (mostly in a very charming way)
2. You do not want to be a Slovakian woman on Easter monday (you will literally be whipped and splashed with ice, cold water)
3. Slovakians love drinking, especially homemade liquor like Slivovica, Marhuľovica or anything else ending in -ica
4. Hiking is a Slovakian national sport
5. To manage 4., 3. is required (it is said that in order not to get lost in the high Tatras, you must drink your fair share of Tatratea, a liquor with up to 72% of alcohol).Les mer

Slovensky Raj

Any visitor to Northeastern Slovakia should visit Slovensky Raj (= the Slovak Paradise). Several trails lead through beautiful gorges. At several parts of the trails, ladders, metal steps and wooden runways help you along the way.
We tried out the most popular trail Suchá Belá, which was pretty cool. We also want to try Velky Sokol some time, but for this one it's best if you come by car, as there are no buses even close to the starting point.Les mer
