      Phillip Island

      An unserem 6-jährigen Jubiläum hatten wir uns ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis herausgesucht. Heute durften wir hautnah die Pinguinparade auf Phillip Island kennen lernen. Kurz nach Sonnenuntergang tauchten aus dem Meer auf einmal mehrere 100 Pinguine auf, die ihren Weg aufs Festland suchten, um Unterschlupf vor gefährlichen Tieren zu suchen.Read more

      Day 11

      MacKenzie Falls

      Bevor wir heute morgen Richtung Phillip Island gestartet sind, waren wir noch beim Reeds Lookout und den MacKenzie Falls. Dort mussten wir ca 20 Minuten an kleineren Wasserfällen runterlaufen, bis wir beim eigentlichen Wasserfall angekommen sind. Nach gestern ein Kinderspiel für uns 😉 der abstieg hat sich auf jeden Fall gelohnt!
      Dann ging es über Melbourne weiter nach Phillip Island, durch Stau und Probleme beim umfahren der Mautpflichtigen Straße war es schon 19 Uhr als wir hier ankamen und die Rezeption beim Hostel hatte schon zu. Anrufen wollten wir nicht (das ist so teuer), also haben wir nah anderen Hostels gegoogelt und ein super Angebot für ein Backpackerzimmer in einem Hotel direkt am Wasser gefunden. Dort angekommen wurden wir sogar noch upgegradet und dürfen jetzt eine Nacht in einem Doppelzimmer mit eigenem Bad verbringen :D      Read more

      Day 10

      Pinguine auf Phillip Island

      Heute gibt es nach dem Check-out in der Prom Lodge in Foster wieder ein feines Frühstück, um uns für den Tag zu stärken.

      Zunächst führt uns unsere Route gen Westen, wo wir zuerst an der Venus Bay und dann an der Waratah Bay einen kleinen Stopp einlegen. Noch immer fasziniert uns die Weite des Ozeans und dessen mannigfaltiges Blau sowie das Tosen der Wellen.

      Unser Mittagessen im Auto verbringen wir am Ende der Welt: Wir stehen im hohen Gras unter schattigen Bäumen und hören nur das Zirpen der Grillen, das Zwitschern der Vögel und den Wind in den Blättern der Bäume. Ein Idyll wie aus dem Bilderbuch! Gestärkt, ausgeruht und völlig entspannt fahren wir weiter ... unsere Blicke sind stets in den Baumkronen, um weitere Koalas zu erspähen. Über Inverloch erreichen wir schliesslich die Halbinsel Phillip Island.

      In Cowes angekommen beziehen wir unser Apartment und etwas Normalität hält Einzug: Wir waschen Wäsche, da das Apartment mit Waschmaschine und Trockner ausgestattet ist. Ein Besuch des Koala Conservation Center ist leider nicht mehr möglich, da es nur noch 30 Minuten offen hat. Also geht es zurück zum Apartment. Unterwegs haben wir uns Pizzen 🍕 für das Znacht besorgt.

      Nach dem Znacht machen wir uns dann auf den Weg in den Süden der Halbinsel zur täglichen Pinguin Parade. Diese lockt Unmengen von Touristen an - auch uns. Hier kann man die Vertreter der kleinsten und einzigen in Australien vorhandenen Pinguinvariante beobachten, welche allabendlich in Gruppen aus dem Wasser steigen und zu ihren Brutplätzen watscheln. Fotos und Videos sind nur vor dem Eintreffen der Pinguine erlaubt, wovon sich jedoch viele Besucher nicht abhalten lassen. Unsere Audioaufnahme gibt jedoch zumindest einen klitzekleinen Eindruck der Geräuschkulisse, welche die Pinguine erzeugen.

      Morgen wartet ein weiteres Highlight auf uns: Wir werden am Nachmittag auf der Great Ocean Road bis nach Apollo Bay fahren.      Read more

      Phillip Island

      Heute haben wir eine Tour zu den Phillip Islands gemacht! Um 10 Uhr ist unser Bus losgestartet und bald hatten wir unseren ersten Stopp erreicht, das Moonlit Sanctuary. Dort konnten wir Kängurus streicheln und füttern und andere australische Tiere beobachten wie Emus, Wombats oder Koalas🐨 Dann gings weiter zu einem Koala Observatory, wo man die Koalas in den Bäumen beobachten konnte. Unser nächster Halt war Churchill Island! Auf dem alten Bauernhof konnten wir zusehen wie ein Schaf geschert wird🐑 Dann sind wir weiter zu den Nobbies gedüst! Die Aussicht dort war unglaublich schön und wir konnten sogar ein kleines Pinguin in einem Häuschen sehen:) Unser letzter Halt bevor es wieder nach Melbourne ging war die Pinguinparade, auf die alle schon sehr gespannt waren! Wir nahmen alle auf einer Tribüne platz und warteten bis die Pinguine aus dem Meer kamen um nach Hause zu gehen🐧 Wir warteten eine gefühlte Ewigkeit in der Kälte aber der Anblick der Pinguingruppen hat das alles letzendlich wettgemacht! Als wir spät nachts wieder in Melbourne ankamen waren wir alle sehr müde aber es war auf jeden Fall ein gelungener Tag!:)Read more

      This was one of the most satisfying meals I've had. The chicken was so flavourful and moist coupled with a salad with a delightful dressing and fresh dill on top. And there was a home made tzatziki sauce with shredded cucumber.Read more

      Day 4 - #Thatchersontour - Philip Island

      Today we were off to Phillip Island for a day trip, ending with the penguin parade. After the early start yesterday for the walking tour we had a chilled morning (I even managed to fit in a gym session and Blake went for a swim) before heading off on the 2 hour drive to Phillip Island. Our first stop was Smiths Beach for what we thought would be a nice spot for lunch and a sunbathe. The weather had different ideas though and we were sadly blown across the carpark before even making it to the beach. We strolled down to have a look and make sure it wasn’t more sheltered on the beach but it wasn’t to be. Instead we decided to visit Rhyll as it was on the east coast of the island and a tad more sheltered for lunch. From there we went on a nice walk along the mangroves boardwalk which was around a 2km return walk. The fam even got their first glimpse of some Aussie wildlife with lots of lizards and some wallabies.

      Next on the itinerary was the Nobbies, which we previously visited when we came to Phillip Island. The Nobbies are very picturesque craggy rock formations boardwalk out in the sea and there is a nice little boardwalk which wraps around the coastline. Like Smiths beach we almost got blown away but the coastline is absolutely stunning so we didn't want the fam to miss it. We also saw one or two penguins in their little nesting boxes sheltering from the wind. Looking rather windswept we decided to grab a coffee from the tourist shop before heading to Cowes for a fish and chip dinner.

      Feeling nice and full we headed to the penguin parade. We purposely got their early but it turned out we were 2 hours early and they hadn’t even opened the doors yet. This worked in our favour though as we managed to get the same spot at the front we had last time we were here (I did have a race with a man and his kids though which was pretty funny). When the sun finally went down we had wave after wave of cute little penguins waddling up the beach(although sadly not quite as close as last time). Last time we came, around 1,000 penguins returned home from their long day at sea however this time 2,322 penguins came home so we were in penguin heaven! Last time we ergs here it was mating season so this time we got to sea that all of their hard work had paid off as there were lots of little baby penguins to see as we were walking along the boardwalks around their nests.       The journey today was quite short by our standards and we arrived on Philip Island by lunchtime. We are staying in Holmwood guesthouse in Cowes. The former is superb and another to add to the list. Philip Island is tiny and you can drive round it in a couple of hours. It is pretty, with a gorgeous coastline yet again and seems to be modelled on a tiny Isle of Wight, as there is a Ventor and Rye. It is twinned with its English counterpart you may not be surprised to hear. We had a close encounter with Koalas this afternoon, but as part of a conservation project this time. That viewing in the wild will still be the highlight for me, even though we were much closer this time.
      This evening we have been to the Penguin Parade. This is a natural nightly event as the Little Blue Penguins come ashore to their burrows in the dunes behind the beach. We did have our reservations about going, as it is a huge managed tourist happening and I must be honest it was a circus. The spectators gather on wooden benches arranged in an amphitheatre. Half of Asia was there and they cannot sit still, be quiet or refrain from photography, which is one of the conditions.
      The first penguin waddled up the beach at 9.03pm and they just kept coming in rafts(the technical term for a group of penguins apparently!). They are tiny, about 6 ins high and it is such an effort for them to waddle up to their burrows they have to keep stopping for a snooze. The chicks rush out to greet them calling vociferously for their parents. Some of the more aggressive youngsters will attack any passing adult and get short shrift for doing so I can tell you. I wish some of the human parents were as strict with their misbehaving young ! It was an amazing phenomenon to witness and only spoiled by the bus loads of tourists who clearly have it on their itinerary, but have no clue what they are to see and are not interested either. After the first twenty penguins had hit the beach, loads of the audience just jumped to their feet and made for the exit
      We did enjoy the spectacle, but our fears were somewhat justified. Think carefully before going. .      Read more

      Pinguin Parade

      Bevor wir die eigentliche Route gen Westen Richtung Adelaide fahren, machen wir heute einen Abstecher nach Osten nach Phillip Island. Dort findet jeden Abend die Pinguin Parade statt. Hunderte von sehr kleinen Pinguinen kommen von der Futtersuche zurück, versammeln sich im Meer, bevor sie in vielen kleinen Gruppen auf den Strand hüpfen und zu ihren Nestern eilen. Zu süß!Read more

      Leaving Cairns

      Our last day in Cairns, we spent in our locale. We went to a Saturday morning Asian market, where there were so many fruits and vegetables we didn't know. Bought a mango and some lychee nuts because we saw them growing the day before. We then had to go take some pictures of the bats. There is a street with several trees where the fruit bats stay during the day. They are huge, compared to our bats, with tawny beige bodies and dark wings. There are hundreds, no maybe thousands of them, slowly fanning their wings to cool themselves. There is a definite odour to the area, not particularly pleasing, and the locals walk out on the street so as not to walk under them on the sidewalk.They apparently feed off the numerous mangoes on the trees around.
      The other thing we tried to get pictures of were the beautiful Rainbow Lorikeets who roost every night just next to our apartment building. They are in the parrot family and there are hundreds of them there, making quite a racket in their screechy way. But oh so pretty!!      Read more

      Nachdem wir die letzten zwei Tage in Melbourne verbracht hatten, gingen wir nach Phillip Island. Den Tag durch sonnten wir uns am Strand und am Abend gingen wir zur Pinguin Parade. Dort kommen bei Dämmerung die kleinen Pinguine zurück ans Ufer, nachdem sie den Tag im Meer verbracht haben.Read more
