Fun fun fun, in the sun

      30. tammikuuta 2023, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

I spent many an hour in the park the last couple days.

It is so warm out, I've just been relaxing in various parks and reading.

Saw a pretty pale green tree. Found a cafe that had wifi. Unfortunately the coffee was bad again and it felt very like a costa. And I dont really wanna support chains when I can go local. I may need to buy myself some coffee powder and do my coffee and work in the hostel. There are loads of small working spots here and the wifi is really strong so it may be a shout. Also cheaper. I just like the walk to the coffee shop.

But anyways. Made myself a little picnic lunch and found another park to sit and read in. Finished my first book of 2023. It was a cute little Christmas holiday romance. The main character was the worst but the love interest was interesting and he had a daughter who I think was written really well.

I'm also making my way through the hitchhiking book. I'm really liking it so far. Lots of stories of people, generosity and truthful history tellings. He is a bit of a biased narrator and fairly opinionated but I agree with him so I'm chill.

Today it was super annoying cause it was boiling in the sun and just slightly too cool in the shade. I kept switching between the two when one got too much. I am definitely living the summer relaxing life while I can. It's nice to just be in places that arent so warm you melt in seconds.

      Tassie, here we come.

      18. marraskuuta 2017, Australia ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

The flight to Tasmania is quite a short one, so we had most of the afternoon yesterday to roam around the waterfront in Hobart. Our hotel is in a great location and we can walk to many of the main attractions here. Hobart is considered by many to be the prettiest city in Australia and I think they may be right. The historic buildings have been kept in wonderful shape , the waterfront is clean and attractive, and there are plenty of parks with lawns and flowers scattered around.
Today we walked to the Salamanca Market, the top tourist attraction in Hobart. Our experiences with markets in other towns had not made us very enthusiastic. They seem to be vegetables and fruits and flea market stalls. But not Salamanca!! We spent hours perusing (and buying) in hundreds of stalls containing Tasmanian handmade articles. There were lovely woolens, jewelry, leather goods, wooden articles, etc. The items were unique and of high quality. The market is about 3 blocks long and 4 stalls wide and happens every Saturday. It was full of people, but the merchants always had time to tell you how their wares were made.
We also visited the Maunston Hut Museum. Maunson was an Antarctic explorer who led an expedition in 1908. The museum is a reconstruction of the huts that they built there to stay for a year. We knew very little about Antarctica exploration but the man working there gave us lots of information and we enjoyed learning about it.
Then we headed off to Battery Hill, a quaint residential area with small cottages as perfectly kept as when they were built 150 years ago. It was very nice to just wander around and enjoy the houses and gardens.
Except for a foray off to the modern shopping area in search of Blundstone Boots, and a stop off at a whisky distillery, we spent the day in the old town and enjoyed it immensely.

      Hobart

      24. maaliskuuta 2017, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

      End of the Kyneton Stay

      18. marraskuuta 2017, Australia ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

We signed up for a tour from the resort going to Woop-Woop. As one of the people with us explained, when she was young and acted silly, her parents would say she had gone to Woop-Woop. That explained what this place was. It is billed as looking at the Aussie sense of humour. The owner, a lady of retirement age named Melva, has made about a hundred sculptures out of everyday things used in a funny way. They match up to Aussie sayings, which can be a little hard to follow. Some were using Aussie rhyming slang, like Cockney in England. There were Australians, New Zealanders and us in the group and they helped explain from time to time. A lot of the humour was quite bawdy, especially funny coming out of this lady. She involves the people in her jokes, and a couple of pictures show some of the times we were asked to participate. We laughed when she asked Dave his name and couldn’t understand what he said until a local translated to “Diav”. It was an experience.
Our last day at Kyneton was quite rainy, but we couldn’t feel bad, because the weather has been fantastic. Into each life some rain must fall. The group of kangaroos came by to entertain us, and we went into town and did some errands.

      Von Salamanca nach Battery Point

      26. lokakuuta 2016, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

      Hobart, Tasmania

      26. toukokuuta 2018, Australia ⋅ 🌙 4 °C

The principal city and capital of the state of Tasmania. Views of the harbor, from Mount Nelson, an interesting pub that I didn't get to visit, older houses in Arthur's Circle, Battery Point, some street art and a whiskey tasting at the Lark Distillery.Lue lisää

Museum of New and Old Art (MONA), Part 2

      8. joulukuuta 2018, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Yesterday at MONA was all day. The final show was the outdoor pavilion that displays the light show at sunset (20:40 last night). I left about 21:15 because of mosquitoes, but it was very beautiful and soothing.

Today has been another wash. I went to Zoodoo Zoo, but it started raining, so I drove back to Hobart to do laundry.

Now, I'm at my hostel about to check in.

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

      Packing Day (but not yet)

      11. joulukuuta 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

I found Kilkenny again! Lol. The Irish pub not far from my hostel serves it. I'll probably go back tonight for dinner. Yummy!

Today is packing day because I leave for New Zealand tomorrow, but right now I'm just being lazy. I'm the only one in the room until at least 14:00 (check in time), and I'm enjoying it.

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

P.S.: Yes, I know my face matches my shirt. I got a little sunburned on the boat. First-world problems. 😀

      Hello Hobart

      21. helmikuuta 2020, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

The train, which is what the locals call their subway or underground system, was only two long blocks away. I got on what I thought was the airport express but on the way to the first stop I realized this was not the right train. So I hopped off, as well as one lugging a 20 kg suitcase can hop, and I was on my way on the next train. Security at the airport was much more lax than I am used to. Shoes don’t have to be removed and I was allowed to bring my full bottle of water with me. The main thing they were concerned about was aerosols, such as puffers.

It was a smooth two-hour flight to Hobart, the capital of the state of Tasmania. I purchased a return fare on the Sky Bus for $33, which took me within three blocks of my next home. I was able to get a last-minute reduced rate on a one-bedroom apartment at the Mantra Hotel, a 1920s heritage building. For less than the price of a hotel room I have a large apartment with a partial kitchen plus the added bonus of a washer and dryer, much needed at this point. On check-in I asked about the possibility of insects as I was getting tired of being on alert for them. I was happy to hear that there would be none as it is generally too cold in Tasmania for most bugs, unlike the tropical environment in Sydney.

I headed to the local Woolies to stock up on food. On my way I came across a free Friday evening music event at one of the parks. The music was the blues so I stopped and listened for awhile. It reminded me of the Grand Forks concerts as there were all age groups there.

The population of Hobart is just over 240,000, 45% of the total population of Tasmania. Founded in 1804 as a British penal colony it is the second oldest city in Australia, second only to Sydney. The city is hilly and of course my hotel is situated at the top of a hill. The temperature is going to be much cooler here and it will definitely be a more relaxing week than in Sydney.

      Hobart

      7. tammikuuta 2021, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We did it!!! We did the Lap of Tasmania!! We are back where we started from in Hobart and I absolutely love it here!!! It's so chilled out and the people are friendly.

We are staying at Lenna of Hobart, which was built between 1876-1880 by Harriet and Alexander McGregor. The original mansion which houses the reception, the bar, function rooms, offices and the McGregor Lookout is connected to the rooms of the hotel by a walkway. It's just perfect!! We are in room 38, overlooking Princes Park and the River Derwent.

We went for a walk tonight along the docks to the Drunken Admiral, a restaurant where I had the seafood chowder I have been after this whole trip!! It was delicious!!

There are so many buildings built by convict labour or from that time. This is such a beautiful historical city. Tomorrow I'm going to the Cornelian Bay cemetary to see the final resting place of my four times great grandmother Mary Ann Amelia Singer, nee Crumb. I'm still looking for evidence of the final resting place of her husband, John McDonald Singer, my four times great grandfather.
