      Trip to Manly

      Heute ging es mal an den Strand. Nach langem herumtrödeln in der Früh haben wir uns auf den Weg gemacht nach Manly. Ich war heute mit meinem Roommate aus dem Hostel unterwegs. Wir sind vom City central mit der Bahn zum Hafen und von dort aus mit der Fähre nach Manly. Was schon irgendwie cool ist, weil man hier die Fähre als ganz normales Strasenverkehrsmittel nutzen kann:)
      Dort angekommen, hat man sich irgendwie ganz anders gefühlt. Es war mehr wie so ein Urlaubsörtchen. War schon sehr schön. Wir haben uns dann erstmal ein kleines Restaurant zum Mittagessen gesucht und haben uns anschließend an den Strand in die Sonne gelegt 🌴☀️ es war herrlich!
      Nach 2 Stunden haben wir uns dann wieder vom Strand verabschiedet und uns noch ein Eis gegönnt! Es gab Ben&Jerrys Eis 😍😍😍 ich war in
      heaven!
      Nach nem kleinen Spaziergang sind wir dann zurück zur Fähre und wieder zurück ins Hostel. Abends waren wir dann noch im eigenen Kinosaal des Hostels und haben Toy story 4 geguckt. Der Film ist übrigens mega! 😁
      Danach ging es auch schon ins Bett :)

      Today we went to the beach. After long dawdling around in the morning we made our way to Manly. Today I was with my Roommate from the hostel on the way. We took the train from the city centre to the harbour and from there the ferry to Manly. Which is really cool, because you can use the ferry as a normal road transport here:)
      Arrived there, one felt somehow completely differently. It was more like a holiday resort. It was very nice. We first looked for a small restaurant for lunch and then we lay down on the beach in the sun 🌴☀️ it was wonderful!
      After 2 hours we said goodbye to the beach and we had an ice cream! There was Ben&Jerrys ice cream 😍😍😍 I was in heaven!
      After a short walk we went back to the ferry and back to the hostel. In the evening we went to the cinema of the hostel and watched Toy story 4. By the way, the movie is amazing ! 😁

      Sydney & Manly Beach

      Heute morgen ging es nach einem entspannten Frühstück zu einer free Walking Tour. Hannah ( Belgien) aus meinem Zimmer hatte mir davon berichtet und wir trafen und dort mit ca. 30 anderen Leuten, um Sydney zu erkunden. Es war trocken🎉
      Der Guides war super lustig und die Tour unfassbar informativ!

      Nice to know:
      Das Geld zum Bauen des Krankenhaus wurde von drei Firmen gebaut, die dafür für drei Jahre das Exklusivrecht zum Verkauf von Rum erhielten.
      Die große Kirche und Town Hall sind auf Boden gebaut, aus dem sie vorher die Leichen wieder aus gebuddelt haben, weil es so unfassbar gestunken hat, weil sie nicht tief genug vergraben waren.
      Die Statur von Queen Victoria wurde aus Dublin nach Sydney gebracht, weil sie dort keine Statur von einer englischen Königin haben wollten.
      Mehrere der wunderschönen Sandsteingebäude sollten für den Bau von Parkhäusern abgerissen werden.

      Während der Tour kamen wir ins Gespräch mit einigen anderen Reisenden und als der Guide den Manly Beach empfahl, zu dem man kostengünstig mit der Fähre fahren kann entschieden wir uns mit zwei anderen Mädels dorthin zu fahren. Die Sonne war zwischendrin rausgekommen und in der Sonne war es super warm. Manly Beach ist ein kleiner Ort mit einem sehr schönen breiten Sandstrand. Wir kauften die stadtbesten Cookies, Diabetes vorprogrammiert, ich schaffte gerade mal die Hälfte und dann bummelten wir über den Markt. Ich wollte nichts kaufen und es war sehr anstrengend auf die anderen zu warten. Ich Frage mich, ob ich wohl am Ende dieser Reise jemals wieder zu Kompromissen bereit bin?
      Ich wartete geduldig und dann machten wir noch einen Strandwalk mit Ende am Lookout. Gegen halb fünf fuhren wir mit der Fähre zurück und mit Sonnenuntergang in Sydney ein, also das was an Sonne hinter den Wolken zu sehen war.
      Es wird hier so unfassbar früh und schnell dunkel! 😯 In den nächsten Wochen werde ich, bzw. wir wohl sehr früh aufstehen müssen, um was vom Tag zu haben.

      Manly Beach

      On to Manly Beach where we parked for an hour so we could see the beach and then walk through the Corso with its wide variety of wee shops to Manly Harbour. I recognized the beach by its trees that line the esplanade. We had to paddle, of course, a stark difference in temperature to our sea this time of year! Czytaj więcej

      To Manly by ferry

      We got the public ferry across to Manly today and spent the day at Manly beach. The ferry was great - you get to see all the sights of Sydney from the sea along the way but much cheaper than a sightseeing trip (just seen your comment on our previous post James & Lou - looks like you had the same idea too!). The weather was ideal - not too hot (temp in early 20s again) and we enjoyed a picnic lunch on the beach (more sushi!). The waves were big and the currents strong though, with the lifeguards doing regular announcements about safety and moving the flags to indicate safe swimming areas surprisingly frequently. How they could tell from standing on the beach which areas were safe & which weren't is beyond me though.... We got 2 ferries to get all the way back to Darling Harbour, the second of which actually took us under the Harbour Bridge. Solana was tired out & napped all the way back, so she missed the ferry journeys... This evening we went out in Darling Harbour and treated ourselves to cocktails and a 2-course meal with a view. Solana wolfed a massive kids steak & chips for dinner (her vegetarianism turned out to be short-lived!). On the way back, we found an outdoor cinema along the harbour, which happened to be showing a kids film. We sat down and enjoyed the last 10 minutes of "Finding Dory" - a great idea, wish we'd got there sooner. Czytaj więcej

      Da am Sonntag alle Fahrten mit der Fähre, Bahn oder Bus 2,50$ nicht übersteigen, nutzen wir (und natürlich jeder andere auch) den Tag um Ausflüge zu machen.
      Es lohnt sich beispielsweise mit der Fähre zum Manly Beach zu fahren, bei dem es im Gegensatz zur Innenstadt total ruhig und gemütlich ist. Man hatte kurze Zeit das Gefühl, dass man in Italien an der Strandpromenade ist :)
      Die Australier sind, was das im Meer baden betrifft, übervorsichtig. Die Fahnen, zwischen denen man eigentlich nur baden darf, sind ziemlich lächerlich eng gesteckt, obwohl der Strand hunderte von Metern lang ist und unserer Meinung nach die Wellen überall gleichstark sind.       Nach Manly (Stadtteil von Sydney) kommt man am besten mir der Fähre, diese kann man mit der OPAL Karte (Karte für die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel) ganz einfach nutzen.
      Zu dem Strand bin ich heute mir Marietti gefahren, es ist ein toller Surfer-Strand und somit ziemlich wellig...

      Von der Fähre aus sieht man das Opera House nochmals besser!       Czytaj więcej

      Manly Beach

      I got a late start today as I FaceTimed Alyssa and family at her request. It was a good time because little Leila was jabbering and very active. Then I had to deal with my finances as my debit card got rejected when I tried to make an ATM withdrawal, the cheapest way to get foreign currency. I had checked with the credit union before leaving home so there shouldn’t have been any issues. Since I arrived I have been using my Visa card but it would be nice to have cash for any small purchases. After 3 tries I was able to find a bank that would exchange my USD for AUD ($50 USD = $71 AUD).

      My plan for today was to take the ferry to Manly Beach, a 30 minute cruise through the harbour, at a reasonable price of $13 return. Unfortunately, as I approached Circle Quay my ferry was just pulling out, meaning I had to wait 30 minutes for the next ferry. It was nice to see the city from a different perspective.

      When I arrived at Manly Beach I stopped at the Tourist Information office to get a map and recommendations. The man I spoke to gave me very poor advice which really spoiled my afternoon. First I went to Manly Beach and walked about a km on the boardwalk. My only other objective was to see Quarantine Beach where immigrant ships and convicts were quarantined with infectious diseases, particularly the European plague, from the 1830s until 1984. The property has been converted into a hotel and conference centre maintaining all the original buildings. The Tourist Office told me I could get there by bus or by a 25 minute walk. I chose to walk the route he had recommended but he didn’t tell me that it was over 2 km straight uphill! Nor did he tell me that the Visitor Centre and buildings closed at 4 o’clock! The map I was given was very poor and when I encountered a young man on the road he too was confused. After walking for over an hour I eventually ran into two couples who were staying at the hotel so they invited me to join them. It turns out they were all teachers who once taught in Cold Lake, Alberta. Unfortunately, all the museum buildings were closed as well so all I got to see was a short tour of the property from the mini-shuttle bus provided by the hotel. What a disappointment after all that effort! The teachers were fun though and I did get to see an echidna!

      I wisely took the bus back to the wharf where the ferry was waiting. I didn’t get back to the apartment until 8 pm after a long, frustrating, poorly planned day.       Czytaj więcej
