South mission

Decided to use my day to wander down to South Mission beach. 35°, direct sunlight at 1.5hrs later I realised the mistake id made.

South mission is very small, basically just housing for the rich. It is also very pretty, sitting in a little bay so protected from most of the winds. I stopped at the only cafe there and had lunch which was much needed. I didn't bring water with me because I didn't realise how far it was. That was my biggest mistake. Half way through I decided it was easier to keep going and grab something when I arrived rather than turning back.

Unfortunately I found out that mum was right, I probably shouldn't have swum in the sea the other day. Though there are no spotting recently, crocodiles and jellyfish are ever present and warned against. Down in south mission there is a little area cornered off by nets that it is safe to swim in. I didn't break any laws or anything, but it is advised against. So that's good to know!

It took around 4hrs from when I left to getting back so I was very tired by that point. Enjoyed some lovely aircon in my room before heading to the pool again.

The temperature had not dropped but the sun was past the point of directly above us, so was more bearable. I choose not to swim, instead I settled down to do some writing and watch the sunset. A photo is enclosed of the pool.

That was until I got a message from my friend at work asking if I could cover. And because money, I obviously said yes. Definitely a good choice as it was not very busy, so I basically got free money for covering the sports bar for 3hrs. There were a few people in but the focus was on room service tonight.

A tour that does the east coast stops in Mission beach on mondays. As a result a large group of backpackers arrived late evening and always come for food. Now because they are backpackers, room service is a luxury so they all ordered it. Nothing like 20 separate orders all at once. Thankfully because I was in sports, I just covered gaming as well while the others dealt with it.

I clocked off at 9 and headed back to my room. Ended up being unable to sleep for various reasons and was still awake at 2am, not fun but there we go.Read more

Day 3.0; (T)Rainforest alps

Heute ging es zurück Richtung Cairns. Auf dem Weg genossen wir die wunderschöne Aussicht der Great Barrier Reef Road. Wir entschieden uns jedoch noch schnell zu den Barron-Falls, anstelle direkt zu Mission Beach zu fahren. Auf dem Weg zu den Wasserfällen hinauf fühlte es sich an, als ob man einen Schweizer Pass hinauffahren würde, einfach quer durch den Jungel. Bei den Barron-Falls selbst, hatte es sogar eine Zughaltestelle, welche sich direkt am Abgrund befand.
Danach ging es dann direkt zu Mission Beach. Als einziger Unterbruch der 3h Fahrt, besuchten wir ein Erdbeerenfeld in den Australischen Hügeln. Nach diesem Abschnitt sassen dann auch alle einmal hinter dem Steuer.

Bei Mission Beach ging es dann das erste mal ins Meer. Danach gab es einen Grillabend. Nach dem Grillieren, sichteten wir sogar die ersten Wallabys.Read more

Traveler Cool, ich mag mich noch erinnern dass die wunderschönen Strände meist Menschenleer waren, Grund: Quallen. War aber jeweils gross angeschrieben wenn dem so wahr, trotzdem Vorsicht.

Mission Beach Bootstour

Der nächste Stopp war am Mission Beach, an dem wir eigentlich nur ein Tag am Strand verbringen wollten. 🏖
Allerdings sprachen uns dort 2 deutsche Jungs an die ein Boot gemietet hatten, um die umliegenden Inseln zu erkunden und fragten uns ob wir Lust hätten mitzukommen.🚤🏝
Also verbrachten wir den kompletten Tag auf einem kleinen Boot, gingen Schnorcheln, sahen Schildkröten und Delfine, aßen frische Kokosnüsse und angelten ein bisschen.🚤🎣🐬🐢🥥Read more

Staying local….

Could have easily stayed put again today, but cajoled ourselves out.

When leaving, either to move on or for the day, we have to unhook our various umbilicals and make sure cupboards, overhead cubbies and loose items are closed, tethered etc. We’re getting better at this, managing the process in about 10 mins now.

That doesn’t always mean we’ve done a good tidying away job though, as it’s only when we set off and encounter a bump or two in the road, that we know how successful we’ve been. There’s always a bit of initial clunking, as things settle (my bones included), but if the noise is prolonged or something breaks free - we’re in trouble and have to pull over - not always easy with Matty.

This is the cassowary coast, which comprises various beaches, all in a row. We drove up and down the road to see them, as they’re a few Ks apart and it’s way too hot to walk.

Turns out Mission beach, with its bijou cluster of shops and cafes is a downtown hub - the other beaches have very little in the way of commerce, which surprised us until we thought, better that than bucket and spade/tourist ornaments outlets etc!Read more

Am Montag fuhren wir über Cairns nach South Mission Beach, wo wir eine großzügige Unterkunft für 6 Personen bezogen.
Obwohl Regen angesagt war, hatten wir 2 Tage Sonnenschein. In Mission Beach ist Zwischen- und Wet -Season: das heisst es werden keine Bootstouren angeboten und die meisten Walks leiden unter den Folgen des Zyklons und den vielen Niederschlägen. So hatten wir zwei Relax-Tage mit Lesen, Apero-Time auf der Terrasse und selber kochen.Read more

Mission Beach

After spending the night at an overcrowded camp site just outside of Cairns we went to the Josephine Falls for brekkie. We were almost on our own there except for a nosy turkey that kept circling us in search for some food. The falls are a really nice spot with a swimming hole and a scenic boardwalk. Afterwards we drove back for a few kilometers to a swamp where there are supposed to be some crocs but we just saw five turtles. Not for lunch this time ;)
Next stop: Mission Beach. A pretty small stretch of beach that is busy with tourists. For us it was of special interest because it's also a busy spot for the elusive Cassowary. Despite all our efforts - overall more than 12km walking - we didn't see any of the heaviest birds in Australia. Tomorrow we'll have another try, probably the last one because they're exclusively in the Wet Tropics of Northern Queensland.Read more

South Mission Beach, Tag 13 - 15 / 81

In Cairns könnten wir locker noch weitere Tage verweilen. Gefällt uns dieser Ort einfach irgendwie besonders gut. Unser Weg führt uns aber weiter. So haben wir insgesamt 2 Stunden Fahrt Richtung Süden vor uns.

Den ersten Stop machen wir nach knapp 30 Minuten. Wir begeben uns auf einen 3 km langen Weg, der uns zu Behana Gorge führt 👣. Die natürlichen Pools zwischen den Felsen sollen zu den schönsten in ganz Northern Queensland gehören. Doch die 3 km müssen wir ja dann auch wieder zurück. Der nächste Halt machen wir bei der Babinda Bakery 🥯, bei der wir die knurrenden Mägen beruhigten.

Weiter geht‘s. Nach einem Spontaneinkauf von Früchten beim lokalen Händler, führt unser Weg durch diverse Bananenplantagen. So kommen wir am Nachmittag in South Mission Beach an und plantschen im Camping-eigenen Pool. Die Rutsche ist dabei sehr hoch im Kurs. Hier lernen wir auch eine super-nette Schweizer Familie mit Kindern im selben Alter kennen 🥰. Das ergibt doch gleich die ein oder andere Pause für die Erwachsenen, da die Kids jemandem zum Spielen haben 🫂.

Vermutlich einer der längsten Strände am Great Berrier Reef finden wir am nächsten Tag in Mission Beach 🏖. Hier landen auch Sky-Divers, was ein spektakulärer Anblick bietet. Für uns immer noch etwas ungewöhnlich - das Meer direkt vor der Nase zu haben, aber nicht zu schwimmen. Denn dieser Bereich gehört zur derzeitigen Jahreszeit den Haien, Krokodilen und Quallen.

Auch einen lokalen Markt haben wir besucht und Riesencrevetten fürs bevorstehende BBQ ergattert. Das freut insbesondere Lean 😉.

Nach drei Nächten in South Mission Beach - wo der nachmittägliche Spass im Pool und das tägliche Glacé für die Kids nie fehlen durfte, freuen wir uns nun auf die nächste Destination: Townsville.

Picked up another relocation van from Apollo and on our way again (much better to be on the road) Stopped at Mission Beach. Lovely .. Lovely place , and beachfront houses only cost 400,000 .. bargain.
