    Straw hat and pigtails

    June 29, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

    1172 miles travelled
We journeyed through the forests of New Brunswick over the eight mile long confederation bridge to Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.). The first thing that struck us was how red the sand and dirt is (like Dawlish!). It’s a pretty island with watery inlets cutting into the rolling landscape and there are farms with red barns and tractors rusting away in the undergrowth. One of the reasons to visit this island is to see the house that was the subject of the book ‘Anne of green gables’. Canada parks manage it and a fine job they have done. Nice to stroll around and take in the atmosphere. L M Montgomery the lady author was born and lived close by and the house was owned by her elderly relatives. However outside the gate. Some ‘entrepreneurs’ have cached in on the theme. If it’s not ticky tacky shops, it’s crazy golf or miniature roller coasters that vie for your attention. Not really in keeping with the area. We have enjoyed some nice trails nearby and as we walk along we come across swathes of lupins they are everywhere. Unfortunately the mozzies here are everywhere too and ferocious. Stop for a second and they are on you biting away. However a liberal application of deet see them bouncing and skidding away. It defiantly works on these horrors. Visited Charlottetown the capital of P.E.I. Nothing much to write home about. Bit of a tourist trap.Read more

    Prince Edward Island

    June 17, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We drove south and crossed the Confederation Bridge to reach Prince Edward Island today. The drive across the island to our campground was spectacular with verdant rolling hills and lush farmlands. We saw many red sand potato fields that reminded us of Georgia and Alabama red clay. Tonight we visited Avonlea Village which consisted of antique buildings that are now shops and restaurants.Read more

    North Rustico Wharf

    June 20, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We spent our final day on Prince Edward Island back at the wharf in North Rustico. (We had to have another taste of the delicious seafood chowder at the Blue Mussel Cafe!) We loved seeing the lobstermen on the wharf bringing in their huge catch for the day. Tonight we had a group dinner at the Fisherman's Wharf--more lobster!Read more

    Anne of Green Gables

    June 18, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We started our day by visiting the house and barn of Anne of Green Gables fame. It is now part of a National Park with lovely walking trails as well. Afterward we drove to the wharf at North Rustico for lunch at the Blue Mussel Cafe-- yummy seafood chowder and fresh halibut. After lunch we drove along the north shore which has also been preserved as a National Park with its beautiful red rock formations. Offshore were thousands of lobster pots and working lobster boats.Read more

    Red Island Baked Potato

    September 8, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

This was our lunch plans. WAS. They basically serve big baked potatoes stuffed with all manner of things as options. We were talking about it all morning. When in (Cavendish) PEI, it seemed fitting to have a Cavendish Potato, right?

They apparently closed already for the season. We were bummed. Time to go look for Plan B.Read more

    Greco's Pizza

    September 8, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

As we looked for plan B, we were met with closed sign after closed sign. In the end we went to this pizza shop and had Donair since neither of us were really wanting pizza today.

Donair was ok. Nothing exciting, especially since our last donair (in Halifax) was the best donair I ever had. Forgot to take a photo of this one. It was a giant mess anyway because they didn't roll it well.Read more

    Green Gables National Heritage Site

    September 8, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Anne of Green Gables by Lucie Maude Montgomery. If you don't already know about these books and subsequent TV show, I'd be shocked. I will assume everyone knows and leave it at this. You can Google it if you need to! I had quite a few photos and it was too hard to narrow it down to just 6, so I will split it into multiple posts. A couple posts for the house, probably one for the trail, and this post, which is of random extra photos on the property (including Lucy's typewriter) and an additional photo of the outside of house that didn't fit in the other posts.Read more
