      Santiago de Chile

      March 12 in Chile ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

Önümüzdeki 30 gün boyunca yolculuğumuz bizi Patagonya'nın tam ortasına, 3.000 kilometre güneydeki Punto Arenas'a götürecek. Neden bu rotayı izlemeye karar verdiğimizi açıklamak kolay. Patagonya'yı mümkün olduğunca çok, tercihen kendi başımıza deneyimlemek istiyoruz.

Santiago - market, churches and museums

      April 4 in Chile ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Beautiful blue sky day today, perfect for some walking and exploring. The Plaza de Armas was lively today, the central market (the centre of which is mainly seafood) was stinky but full of friendly people happy to chat, and the museums too plentiful to choose. However, I had to see the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, which documents the 11 Sep 1973 military coup when Chilean life changed dramatically, to become a time of execution, torture, detention, raids, suppression and intervention into media and universities. But it also reflects on the experiences of many other countries where human rights have been abused.Read more

Concha y Toro winery, Maipo Valley

      April 5 in Chile ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Perfect day for a day trip out of the city to visit the biggest winery in Chile - Concha y Toro. They have massive acreage on the flats of the Maipo Valley where they mainly grow cabernet sauvignon graps, and they also have land in other regions that best suit each grape variety. We jad a short tour of the property, then all tried three wines. Then three of us had a sommelier guided tasting of four premium wines - definitely worth the small extra cost.Read more

      Reisetag

      April 2, 2023 in Chile

      Marvelous Santiago

      April 24, 2023 in Chile ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Today was a captivating day of exploration as we immersed ourselves in the rich history and enchanting architecture of Santiago, Chile. The four of us signed up for a walking tour to explore the city's vibrant energy and interesting history:

Plaza de Armas: Our adventure commenced at the historic Plaza de Armas, the beating heart of Santiago. Stepping onto this bustling square, we were greeted by the grandeur of the Metropolitan Cathedral and the stunning façade of the Correo Central. The square's energetic atmosphere, adorned with fountains, palm trees, and vibrant flowers, provided the perfect introduction to Santiago's cultural heritage.

La Moneda: Just a stone's throw away from Plaza de Armas lies the majestic Palacio de La Moneda, the seat of the Chilean government. This neoclassical masterpiece stood as a symbol of political power and resilience. We marveled at the architectural grandeur and learned about its historic significance, including the tumultuous events that unfolded during the military coup of 1973.

Plaza de la Constitución: Continuing our exploration, we strolled along the bustling streets of Santiago to reach the Plaza de la Constitución. This expansive square is surrounded by significant landmarks, including the imposing Palacio de los Tribunales and the elegant Palacio de Justicia. The square's lively atmosphere, adorned with colorful street performers and bustling cafes, offered a glimpse into the city's vibrant culture.

Barrio Paris - Londres: Our next destination took us to the charming neighborhood of Barrio Paris - Londres, a true architectural gem. Walking through its narrow streets, we were transported to another era, with European-inspired architecture and quaint cobblestone alleys. Each building seemed to whisper stories of bygone times.

Iglesia San Agustín: One of the hidden gems we discovered was the stunning Iglesia San Agustín, a magnificent church nestled within the heart of Santiago. The baroque architecture, adorned with intricate details and towering spires, left us in awe. Stepping inside, we were greeted by the serenity and tranquility of the sacred space, where we took a moment for quiet reflection.

Santa Lucía Hill: We then ascended the iconic Santa Lucía Hill, a verdant oasis in the heart of the city. The winding pathways and lush gardens led us to breathtaking viewpoints overlooking the cityscape of Santiago. We marveled at the contrast between the modern skyline and the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains.

Lastarria: Our day concluded with a visit to the vibrant neighborhood of Lastarria, where art, culture, and gastronomy converge. The cobblestone streets were lined with trendy cafes, art galleries, and boutique shops. After the tour, we joined a family we had met for a nice lunch at a local restaurant, savoring the flavors of Chilean cuisine and soaking in the lively atmosphere of this bohemian quarter.

Santiago has left an indelible mark on us with its fusion of history, architecture, and vibrant culture. Each step through the city revealed fascinating stories, connecting us with the past while embracing the present.

    • Day 13

      Santiago

      September 13, 2023 in Chile ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Today started with a big city walk. By city walk, I just mean the central area, because Santiago is massive area wide.

The best location to begin was at Santa Lucía Hill, this iconic hill was here the Spanish conquistador founded Santiago. Talking this from the indigenous of this region unfortunately, who also cherished this hill for their rituals. It is a panoramic view of the city as you walk around it.

Next we moved to the Plaza de Armas (Which most Latin American cities have) which is a large square surrounded by government buildings and cathedral. A very lavish cathedral at that. We did have a little laugh at the arrangement for confessional here in Santiago. The cathedrals have multiple confessional areas around the walls facing inwards to the church. But the priest and person are literally completely visible and within earshot of anyone walking past. There is even a row of chairs just in front for those waiting.

We went around to a museum for the fascinating eras of Pre-Columbian history. We have been listening to a podcast on the History of Latin America for the past 6 months, and we've found it so interesting. But the pottery, woodwork and fabric of this era is so unique and unusual.

We walked though a lot of markets, everywhere people are selling things on the streets. One of the things we saw was the size of the hot dogs (Completos) and Hamburgers they have here. Every store has these in the window and they were gigantic, and the one labelled as gigantic was more epic. I asked if it was for one person, and my mouth dropped to hear yes. Lunch is the most important part of the day.

This weekend is Chile Independence Day. They take that very seriously here, so everything was covered in the flags of Chile. Buildings, people, cars and pets.

      Santigo - really day 1

      April 3 in Chile ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Found some very good coffee to kick start my wanderings, past the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, over the Rio Mapocho through Barrio Bellavista with amazing street art everywhere bringing much colour to the neighbourhood, and finally to Casa Pablo Neruda, 'La Chascona'. Neruda was a beautiful poet who led an eccentric and politically active life, reflecting in the house he built among the rocky base of Cerro San Cristobal.
Then a ride in the funicular to the top of the hill.

      Santiago street art

      April 3 in Chile ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Being a city on the edge of a desert, it can use some artful colour ... and you don't even need to pay to go into a gallery or museum to see the brilliant street art!
