    Off to Molesworth Station

    November 28, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

An early morning start to catch the Ferry from Wellington to Picton. Had to leave home by 6.15am. The vehicle was mostly packed the pevious day. Got up early and made some pies for the ferry trip and our dinner. We had booked a room in the ferry so was able to catch up on some sleep. Once in Picton we drove to blenheim to have lunch and then had to find the turn off to Molesworth Station. Once on that road to MWS you realised how vast some of the unbuilt areas of NZ was. This was a public owned farm that was leased to landcorp. It was the largest farm in NZ. 182,000 hectartes and at any given time 10,000 to 12,000 cattle running on the farm. Very remote and very peaceful. On the way we met a few cars at the start after that it was trafic going one way. We were the only vehicle, and there were a few cyclists. It took us over 3 hours to get to the campsite at this end of the station. The ranger lady was very nice and said we could pick any place ot camp as we were the only ones there. Later on though another camper van with a french guy camped as well.

We found the premium spot with a stream next to us, even a little water pool, though it was not dipping weather by any means. Setting up our camping tent was very satisfying as we had only set up the tent once before as a practice run. But this is wear Mr James is the best person to have around. He is so metodical, no short cuts with him, and him supervising me, and me supervising him we got our tent up and dinner which I had made that morning ( Pies) with a salad made at the camp we were set. Glass of Wine and we were happy campers all the way.

    Molesworth to Hamner

    November 29, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Last night it rained heavily, but we were cosy and no drips of water on us at all. The tent though was wet, and we would need to dry it up at some time or another. After breakfast and a wash with water heated over the gas stove we were ready to go see the homestead and the cottage etc. Met up with the French guy and the water tap had a chat with him, and offered him some cherrys we had got yesterday in Blenheim. He was so happy. Had to walk a small distance go to a lookout point to see the homestead and the auxiliary buildings, had a look at the original molesworth cottage too. This was made out of cob( a mix of soil and animal dung) It was very warm inside. Today we had a few more hours of driving. We drove through another staion but it was mainly driving through Molesworth for most of the time. Had a picknic of soup and biscuits and off we went again. finally once we came out of Molesworth station Colin wanted to go to Hamner via the Jolly Pass. This was the first 4 wheel dfrive track that he had on his list of tracks to do. At one point there was a young couple who were driving through a mud water hole and the young girl was driving and Colin said "Go giril Go" she didnt seemed faced out at all about driving through there.

We got to Hanmer finaly around 4.00pm. Found a lovely hotel to stay the night. I was happy to camp, as long as I was able to stay at a motel or hotel the next night so that I could have a hot shower the next night, and catch up on our washing of dirty linnen.

The place also had a restaurant attached to it called The Red Stag. The meal was lovely. I cook a mean Lamb Shanks, I am very hesitant to eat lamb shanks when I go out, as I always think mine is better. The lamb shanks I had that night came a very close second.

Hanmer to St James Station Lake Tennyson

    November 30, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

After a lovely breakfast at the Hotel we checked out and went off to see lake Tennyson which was in St James station. This took us through another big station which was now under Doc management. so there were no stock at all. Sad to see lovely large stations being closed up like that. This boardered Molesworth station yet. Just shows how large MWS is.

Once again it is all inspiring to see how large the remote land of NZ is. We have now travelled thorugh all of NZ except for the Chatham Islands. I thought I had a good grasp of the land mass of NZ. Well this was a lesson on land and man and how the early settlers would have worked to make a living. The beauty of the unbuilt, land that we call the clean green image of NZ is just so breath taking.

Got to Lake Tennyson, and met the young couple who we had passed the previous day at the mud hole, it was another very nice spot to camp at. They had camped there over night. We took out our wet tent and layed it out for it to dry. while that was drying we went for a short walk, and then had a picnic lunch that we had bought at the local 4 square super market. By the time we returned to Hanmer it was late evening and we decided to stay another night there.

  • Day 4

    Lake Taylor

    December 1, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Drove for over 2.5 hours off the main road to get to Lake Taylor first and then to Lake Sumner.

  • Day 5

    Lake Taylor to Geraldine

    December 2, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We left the site of our camp around 9.00am. Lake Taylor was like a mirror, it was so still and the reflection of the hills on the water was beautiful. Yesterday we had passed a lot of Cabbage trees that were blooming and it was very preety. So stopped to get some photos of these coming out of the wop wops. We were more relaxed coming out so stopped to look at the River, the Deep pools in the River, The swing bridge etc.

Back on SH7 and Mr James had decided we were going down the middle and heading South. This meant we were travelling on the Inland Scenic Route SH72. It really is very beautiful driving along this perticular road. You get a bit of everything. Rivers, Mountains, Farm Land, Lovely Little Towns etc.

When we got to Amberly it was close to lunch time, so we stopped to stretch our legs and have a look around. Most of the food stalls were already closing and it was only arounfd 12.30pm. There was a dumpling stall and the lady was selling 6 dumplings for $12.00. So I saidto her could I have 10 for $20.00. I was told "No"you had to buy it in lots of 6. Could not understand her logic, and felt like telling her to go back and do her Arithmetic 101.

Booked ahead a motel in Geraldine so we had a destination to get too. I liked camping, but it was only one night at a time. I needed my hot showers the 2nd night. This was not negotiable. There is always a frist time for everything, and it was one of those days for me. I had an Indian Lamb curry. The order taker asked me did I want it Indian hot for spicy level, and I said "Yes". Well that was a mistake for sure. It was spicy even for me. I live and learn.

  • Day 6

    Gerladine to Clyde

    December 3, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌫 11 °C

Once again it was a long long day of driving, so much so my dearly beloved wanted me to drive. WOW he must have been tired of driving. :)

We had stopped at Geraldine last night as we wanted to go to the pie shop in in Fairlie. The que to get pie shop is at any given time out the door and round the corner kind of. That show tasty their pies are and how famous they are around NZ. But first things first.

Today was the First Sunday of Advent, So I went off to mass and Colin went off to the vehicle museum in Geraldine. The priest was and Indian priest by the name of Fr Jolly. His Sermon was very good. He strated by saying Happy New Year. Luckily for me I was on to what he said only because I had read somethig about the first Sunday in Advent is the start of the Catholic New Year. It was a good Puch line to start with. We had agreed to meet at the Barkers foodstore and eatery in the centre of town. Mmmmm.... the racks of bottled goodies look very nice. I started on breakfast till Col came. The food was tasty. Colin did'nt want anything as he was saving room for his pies. Greedy Pig.

After a stop for takeways at the Pie shop we were on our way. It was a long day of travelling. Over 8 hours in total as we stopped to tiki tour around the side of lake Tekapo and go all the way to the back of it, then taking 'The Shot of Mt Cook'. The Lupins were in total bloom. it was like a tapestry of colour as far as the eye could see at times. What a lovely scene. I understand what William Wordsworth meant in his field of Daffodils.

    BY WILLIAM WORDSWORTH

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
    A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
    They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Then thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
    In such a jocund company:
    I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
    Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
    And dances with the daffodils.

Onwards and South wards we drove on. we got to the air B&B in Clyde and both of us were quite tired, wash, dinner and bed was the order of events for the evening.
