      Pyramids, camel ride and Sphinx!

      22. mai 2022, Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Today was amazing. My heart is full. Pyramids were breathtaking! Camel ride was spectacular (Charlie my camel was a good boy) and I didn't fall off. Sphinx was crowded but still a sight to behold. I was overcome with joy.Les mer

      Cairo

      22. april, Egypt ⋅ ⛅ 35 °C

What an amazing day. We spent the first half of the day at Giza. Pyramids & the Sphinx are just amazing. And to go into the burial chamber in the middle of Khufu’s pyramid was quite mind blowing. Then we finished off the day with a visit to the Cairo museum. So much interesting stuff, including much from Tutankhamun’s tomb.Les mer

      Pyramids of Giza & Mummies

      8. juli 2022, Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 91 °F

This was supposed to be our last day in Egypt but our visas for India are not yet approved. We have moved into a western style hotel at the airport for respite from the Cairo heat and traffic. I have become a worshiper of Good AC. It’s been very hard to find. No taxi has had it or safety belts.

The Pyramids at Giza & Sphinx are from the Old Kingdom between 2600-2500 BC. They are older than the Valley of the Kings and Temples seen in earlier post,

The camel man was quite a character. The 🐪- had lovely manners.

      Another travel day

      28. august 2022, Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 95 °F

      Miles: 3.2 Steps: 7869 Fights: 7

Travel in the Middle East is WAY different than travel in Europe or Mexico. We flew out of Amman today - we were scheduled to take off at 8:00pm. While trying to check in tho I found they had changed the flight - 5:30pm takeoff now. Glad I looked.

So we returned the rental car and got to the airport around 2:30, to find out the flight had been changed again - now departing at 9:00pm!!! So we spent 6 1/2 hours hanging out in the airport. We’ve learned tho that there are worse places - airports are usually nicely air conditioned, have decent chairs, usually there’s free wifi, free bathrooms, and there’s food pretty close by. What else do you need?!? 😃

So we flew from Amman to Cairo, Egypt! We hit our 21st country and 4th continent! Cairo was a mad house right from the start - from getting thru passport control, to locating cash, to finding a SIM card and getting an Uber - all CRAZY difficult. BUT we did it. Glad we’re fairly seasoned at this now.

We’re staying in Giza so had a 50 min Uber ride to our “hotel” - car travel here is by far the scariest and worst we’ve ever seen. Our driver was really proficient, but damn, it’s crazy scary on the roads here.

We didn’t get to our hotel till midnight - again, like many places on this trip, the outsides of these places look terrible, but the inside is awesome. Scary at first. We were greeted by two men immediately at the Uber who welcomed us and carried our backpacks up 5 flights of stairs to the terrace where our room was. It’s a GREAT room - and we’re literally right next to the pyramids!! Crazy close. Can’t wait to go see them in the daylight tomorrow.

The last ancient wonder of the world!

      29. august 2022, Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

      Miles: 3.9 Steps: 11541 Flights: 12

The family run 4 room “hotel” we’re at is right next to the pyramids, a 5 minute walk to the entrance. It made for a great start to our morning. Once outside during the daylight we could really see where we’re staying. Shocking to see the exterior as it’s so nice on the inside.

We headed in and walked the entire archeological site. It almost feels fake or unreal to see these massive pyramids. Each stone weighs TONS - and standing up next to them, each stone is taller than we are! We sat for quite some time on a bench staring at the Great Pyramid in awe thinking of all the history that must have taken place right at that spot over the last 5000 years! Crazy.

We went back and relaxed, napped during the hottest part of the day. Just too hot to be out in it at one point. But in the evening we were able to sit on the terrace/roof, where we were served dinner and watch the night show! They tell the story of the building of the pyramids and set it to lights. Very pretty.

      Pyramiden von Gizeh

      17. september 2022, Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Geschafft. 🥵😊Les mer

Cairo - first active day of tour

      11. oktober 2022, Egypt ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Yesterday was officially day 1, when we all arrived here, and had a welcome dinner, but today was the first active day. We have found that there are 10 other people in our group - we had thought we were a separate group on our own, but the others are fine - Australians - and no problems! Six had come on from a Jordan tour, and the other 4 are just friends…very easy and no ghastly people!! So last night after dinner we were told to assemble at 7.15 in the foyer to start the day! This is to avoid crowds and heat (though we still certainly had crowds) and a bit daunting to the new arrivals after 24 hours of travel…but everyone made it and we had an amazing day.

Just riding in our bus in the chaotic Cairo traffic is an experience…cars going in many directions, donkeys and horse carts, people strolling through to cross the road….our first stop was Sakkara where the step pyramid is - the oldest pyramid - and Memphis, the original capital of Egypt, where there is a museum with enormous statues of Ramses II.

Lunch at a restaurant near Sakkara, good, but I just ate the meze which was yum…and we also paid a visit to a carpet making school, where they are keeping the tradition going of making the carpets - cotton, wool or silk. Then the afternoon’s activity was the Giza pyramids and the sphinx. Millions of people of course, but they are all so extraordinary and enormous, that it is a wonder however often you see them….our guide is good, entertaining and knowledgeable and good to be with. He will be with us for the whole tour, not just Cairo.

It was fairly hot as the day wore on, but now cool in the evening…very pleasant. We met at 7pm with Amr’s friends (Amr and Hesham) and it was lovely to see them…had a drink and little dinner…no one was over hungry and the travellers needed another good night’s sleep…I have left the 2 Amrs talking, as I feel quite ready for bed too, even though my Apple Watch is not satisfied…it doesn’t appreciate trudging on the sand and uneven surfaces round the pyramids etc…! Anyway, all is very good….and tomorrow we don’t start till 8.15 !!

      More great sights of Cairo

      12. oktober 2022, Egypt ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Today has been more leisurely as we started off at 8.15 and arrived back at the hotel before 4pm….and it wasn’t hard walking - in fact my Apple Watch will be most upset at the lack of it, as am now very much enjoying downtime feet up on the bed!

Our first stop was the citadel - which is high up on a hill with a great view over the city, and where there is the Muhammad Ali mosque - a beautiful mosque build by Saladin and a copy of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, though I think I heard is a bit smaller. Then we were taken to the market area, where our guide said has junky souvenirs made in China so to be aware! It was not the market area I had remembered with the Islamic gate and architecture, and I hope Omnia and Amr can maybe take us to that part when we get back to Cairo after the tour. So while we had free time there Amr suggested we visit another mosque nearby, and he and Omnia talked to the man on the entrance…this was not a tourist show mosque, and we women had to go in a separate entrance, and we found we were in a little women’s section, separated with a trellis from the main body of the mosque, and there were many women sitting on the floor, with children or quietly chatting with friends, reading or praying….I think it is a place to escape from the men! Anyway, we did look a bit odd coming in, but we quietly took a place in a corner (Omnia did not come in as she wanted to do some shopping!) and Louise and I sat on the floor. The women were sweet and friendly and made eye contact and we even had a sort of conversation with a girl who was playing with a small child…she showed us photos of different relatives and ended up taking a selfie with Louise and me! A very different experience.

Then lunch at a nearby very nice restaurant (where you could have light meals) and that was leisurely and relaxing. Then we went off to the Egyptian museum - the new grand museum is still not opening till maybe next year, so this is the one in the city that we have been to before, which still has many exhibits despite many treasures already being moved…it still feels full of stuff! So our guide took us on a tour of highlights which was fabulous- as if you stopped at every showcase you’d be exhausted trying to take it all in. Ended seeing the jewellery of Tutankhamen and also the 2 innermost coffins - amazing stuff, and we arrived back not too overwhelmed, just right! Another great day…BUT tomorrow we will get a wake up call at 3am to leave at 4am to go to the airport for our flight to Aswan!! So an early night tonight, and more adventures tomorrow.

No Dianne, you can’t ride a camel

      15. oktober 2022, Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

After breakfast we met up with our local Cairo guide, Islam. We met in the hotel lobby at 8 am, which isn’t really an early hour, but we were dragging our butts a bit from jet lag. The first stop is the Pyramids of Giza. You can see the pyramids shortly after crossing the Nile river into Giza. The road to the pyramids circles the impressive structures as you approach so the view gets better and better. We both agreed that they are not disappointing. There was some disappointment to be had though as Dianne is still looking to get a Camel ride. This desire dates back to at least 2017, when she first mentioned it to me on a boat trip to Dubai. We put it off several times on that trip due to timing and inconvenience. On the trip to India I promised her a ride on a camel and we even went to a Camel rodeo. It didn’t work out that time, due to cultural considerations. Our camel care giver could not abide a woman riding a camel while I lounged in the cart behind. Today there are camels for rent, but they come by the hour and I don’t want to ride a camel. I don’t find them friendly enough. I could not see renting a camel for what would probably a five minute ride for Dianne and me having to go for the next 55 just to get my money’s worth. Dianne will have another chance to ride a camel in Morocco. Our friend Annie said so. For now there is just disappointment and desire.Les mer
