      Bordeaux!

      We spent the day exploring Bordeaux till late into the evening. So many beautiful things to see. What I’ve seen so far of Europe is truly magical. It feels like a fairy tale sometimes.

      We went to SO many places I can’t even describe them all. Pey-Berland tower (231 step spiral staircase - climbed it!), St Andre Cathedral, Palais Rohan, Grosse Cloche (clock and bell tower), took an open air bus tour, walked the Jardin public gardens, Porte Cailhou & Porte de Bourgogne (two old gateways - when it was walled - to the city that still stand), St Michael Cathedral & the Pont de Pierre (bridge). Then we stayed until dark and explored a lot of the city lit up. Beautiful!

      Things I don’t like about France: the food, and the people haven’t been especially friendly or kind. Unfortunately stereotypes have rung true. Things I loved about France: the desserts, and the beauty of everything around me.      Les mer

      Les deux premiers jours

      Les deux premiers jours en Bordeaux c'étaient très intéressant. J'aime beaucoup ma famille d'accueil, ils sont des gens très gentils. Ils parlent très lentement avec moi et je comprends beaucoup ! Le premier jour, mon et Ida, nous avons eu des problèmes avec le bus parce que notre arrêt de bus non desservi. Personne ne le savait. Nous avons attendu 40 minutes ! Finalement, une femme sympa nous a informés que l'arrêt n'était pas desservi. J’ai appelé ma mère d’accueil et elle nous a conduits à l'école. Nous avions 15 minutes de retard. Le prochain matin nous avons dû chercher un autre arrêt de bus, mais nous avons quand même manqué le bus aujourd'hui aussi. Mais nous sommes arrivés à temps. SBB me manque. À Bordeaux ils ont l'app TBM mais on ne peut pas comparer avec SBB. Mais nous sommes arrivés à temps. La ville est très belle et j’aime beaucoup l’architecture. Après le premier jour j’étais très très fatigant.Les mer

      la deuxième semaine

      Le temps passe très vite, deux semaines se sont déjà écoulées. J'apprécie beaucoup mon séjour à Bordeaux, c'est une très belle ville. Je me suis fait beaucoup de nouveaux amis et nous allons souvent faire du shopping. L'école est un peu ennuyeuse parce que nous avons déjà fait toute la grammaire à l'école cantonale, mais quand nous ne faisons pas de grammaire, c'est intéressant. Par exemple, le vendredi, nous avons écrit un poème. Pendant ces deux semaines, nous avons fait de superbes excursions avec l'école. Le week-end dernier, nous avons visité la dune du Pilat et cette semaine, nous avons fait une croisière en bateau.Les mer

      South toward the trail

      It was a confusing and tense morning of ticket and train matching. What would have been a simple fix in the old days of lots of station masters who can answer questions is now just a guy you wait in line for an hour to talk to who has no power to touch a Eurrail pass. I think God solved the problem for us. I think. 🤔 I activated our passes but according to my app it called my activation date my first day of travel (we get four) That leaves us one day short. I had reservations to get on the train today and I had activated the passes yesterday but my misunderstanding of what “activation” meant has us messed up. They say on the trail “the Way” will provide. The ticket collector was satisfied with the reservation tickets and didn’t actually check my Eurrail pass. That gives us back a day. The Way did provide. (Before you think I’m getting too mystical, read John 14:6. That’s my understanding of The Way.)

      So now we are getting out of the city on the TGV going 300 km/hr for a smaller, slower town. Jon and I have never been to Bordeaux and since the train from Paris to St Jean ran though here anyway we decided to get off and look around. Paris, a city known for style and fashion was hard for me with my three practical zero fashion hiking outfits and no makeup or styling products. I’m sure I looked like a homeless person to them but on the trail I think I’ll fit right in.

      I think the whole world is in a heat wave right now. It’s 104 F in Bordeaux. Yuck. It will cool off before the hike but it will also be rainy. Hmmmmm. Which is better?!

      On the upside, our two rooms in the Hilton are luxurious compared to that one room in the hostel in Paris. (These were way cheaper too!)

      I also saw another couple that was dressed like us- probably other Camino hikers. Slobs unite!

      We went to the old town of Bordeaux which turns out was settled by the Romans. I drank from an ancient Roman well (I’m sure the water was fine) and we stumbled on a cathedral that was built in 800’s. No… not 1800’s! My bucket list thing was to put my 104F feet into the Miroir d eau.

      Considering Europe is known for their lack of ice and tepid beer I’m surviving considerably better than I’d have thought. I just really want an ice cold water though.      Les mer

      Travel day

      We left Paris today and headed to Bordeaux, France. It’s about 35 miles from the western coast. We took a high speed train for the trip and It definitely felt much faster than any US train I’ve been on. We were greeted at the train station in Bordeaux by a stairway, with of all things, a picture of Multnomah Falls painted on the steps. We couldn’t believe it!! No explanation - just the pic.

      We got to our Airbnb and then headed downtown to explore a bit. I wasn’t sure what we’d find here, but so far, as always I’m amazed at the wonderful sites we stumble upon.

      We just wandered today, but what we found was SO beautiful. The old streets, buildings, alleys are so quiet and peaceful. The vibe of the city is so laid back and enjoyable. Eventually we laid down in a grassy park, in the shade and took a nap with hundreds of others doing the same. We had hand scraped snow cones and we eventually found the “Miroir d’eau”. It’s on the riverside and is the largest mirror in the world - 3450 m sq - made of water. Hundreds of kids and families were playing in it. The mirror area would fill up - maybe 4-6” - and then start draining leaving a thin film of water on the black concrete. And then magically, it would reflect EVERYTHING! It was absolutely gorgeous - and refreshing to walk around in. This was a great start for our short time here.      Les mer

      Last day in Bordeaux

      Our last day in Bordeaux was unique - we went to La Cite du vin, which is a wine museum!! It was a really modern museum that took you thru everything to do with wine that you could think of, and ended with a tasting on the top of the building overlooking the city. Was a very cool experience.

      Then we headed over to Bassin de Lumieres for a one hour show. This was absolutely incredible! This exhibit is very hard to describe. It was works of art, paintings, graphically set to music and somewhat animated - displayed over the water, and on all the walls and floor in an old MASSIVE submarine bay from WW2. The French have done a remarkable job of repurposing old buildings. This literally brought me to tears at one point, as it was almost overwhelming to all the senses. The videos and pictures won’t do it justice. It was absolutely mesmerizing.

      We also walked by the most amazing wine store I’ve ever seen. Three stories, straight up, all displayed on a spiral staircase. It caught my attention.

      Finished the evening hanging around a Starbucks (to use their wifi to plan our next city), and then had wine, bread, cheese and meats for dinner sitting outside at a cafe. Beautiful night.      Les mer

      La dégustacion

      Rally und Weinprobe... eine eher seltsame Kombi. Die Vorlieben der Teilnehmer liegen eindeutig im gehopften Bereich.
      80% der Rallyeteilnehmer hat von der Vorstellung eh nichts verstanden, 10% haben so getan als ob, je 5% hatten Ahnung oder etwas verstanden und einer hat Fragen gestellt. Das Weingut Chateau La Clotte ist recht klein aber wird als erstklassiges Weingut empfohlen, sie keltern weißen Bordeaux als Dessertwein und natürlich auch trockenen Bordeaux. Und ich kann das nur bestätigen. Außerdem durften wir auf dem Weingut übernachten und als Kompensation haben wir natürlich ein paar Flaschen eingekauft. Von Jan gibt's später vielleicht noch ein Comic dazu in Arbeit.
      Die Anlage ist sehr gepflegt, wir durften die sanitären Anlagen benutzen und hatten super Stellplätze im Grünen.      Les mer

      Chemin Compostelle 2/40 étapes

      La 2e étape de notre chemin, qui est en réalité la 31e sur 39 étapes du Camino de la Voie de Tours. Le Barp à Le Muret, objectif: 31,3 km. Cumulatif : 66,3 km.

      Journée du type poncho (pluie intermittente) . À tout moment il fallait arrêter pour enfiler le poncho. Elle fut aussi éprouvante car c’était humide. Les conditions pour la marche étaient bonnes mais sans trop d’attrait, toujours tout droit à perte de vue. Pour finir, on a eu de la difficulté à trouver un endroit pour dormir. Comme nous marchions avec une Française (Josiane) elle nous a vraiment aidés à trouver un espace pour dormir.
      Ici à Muret il n'y a rien, pas de service, pas une épicerie rien.
      On va maigrir 😂.
      En plus demain la plus grosse journée au programme. “Labouhayre – Onesse-et-Laharie” et 31 Km.

      Tout va bien, après ces 2 journées éprouvantes, on sera au rendez-vous 🤗

      Zo. De aanloop naar Portugal zit er op. Veel kilometers gemaakt met die “ouwe trouwe” zonder problemen. De installatie van Paul is niet in de fik gevlogen dus dat is heel knap werk of heel veel geluk. Mooi plekje gevonden aan het water. Morgen gaat het eigenlijk pas beginnen. Dan zonder snelweg de Pyreneeën over naar noord Spanje. We keep y’all posted!Les mer

      We hebben een (privé)kamer geboekt voor morgen in Commensacq. We trekken door de Landes, bos, bos en nog eens bos. Zo'n 155 km tot Dax aan toe. Beetje plannen is wel handig denken we. Dan komt het échte klimmen en weer zo'n 100 km verder kijken we tegen de Pyreneeën aan, slik.Les mer
