Day 6 - rest day (Licques)

      26. april 2023, Frankrike ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

It's my first rest day, and I felt I deserved it, LOL. I walked around the town but took it very easy all day. I visited my first unlocked church and lit a candle. There were a number of religious icons around the town. The odd little wooden building is my cabin!Les mer

Day 5 - Guines to Licques

      25. april 2023, Frankrike ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

I had dinner last night with the two Australians from Noosa (Helen and John), Eileen (the Canadian) and her partner; Pat (a Brit), and two Americans; Kim and Alison. They are all walking the Via Francigena. The only accommodation I could get last night was a cabin. It was great, so I'm doing the same tonight. As it had rained all night last night, and I was walking through the forest again today, I thought I was in for more mud. Luckily, I was mistaken! There was some, but none of it was a problem. I only encountered two other walkers today, going in the opposite direction. I saw the very fast train; close up, I was right next to the railway line. AND, I saw a deer. I'm pretty exhausted and am looking forward to my rest day tomorrow.Les mer

Day 4 - Wissant to Guines

      24. april 2023, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Mary-Lou left for the Somme before 9 am this morning. I will miss her excellent company. I am now walking solo. I'm officially calling today 'Mud' day as most of my walking was on dirt roads or paths that were squelchy, squishy, and sometimes very slippery. My poles were a godsend. I walked 27 km today and am feeling pretty exhausted. I saw deer tracks today, but no actual deer. I got to walk through a forest today; that was special. Mostly, I walked through farmland, and it was lovely. I'm staying in a 'lodge', what I would call a cabin, tonight. Unbelievably, I've met up with the couple from Noosa and Eileen from Canada today. Oh, and believe me or not, but I saw the English coast this morning.Les mer

Day 3 - Calais to Wissant

      23. april 2023, Frankrike

What started as a cold bright morning turned into a day of rain, and it remained cold all day - around 11 degrees. We stopped for coffee at a wonderful bar, run by Alexa and Frank. They were lovely friendly people, as was everyone else in the place and they were impressed that we were pilgrims. There was a lot of beach walking today, which would have been fantastic in better weather, and what I could see of the coast line was majestic. Mary-Lou and I separated just over halfway, which meant she was able to avoid the impassable creek just before Wissant. I, on the other hand, got my feet wet! We are both exhausted, and I expect we will sleep well tonight.Les mer

      Arriving in France

      26. april, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

I was ok with driving on the right but every time the satnav (and Darren) said go left or right I did the opposite!! I seem to have completely forgotten the difference between the two 😂 I think I was just so stressed and tired that my brain was not working at all with these instructions. It didn’t help that it was raining quite hard at times and the street lights in France aren’t great also there’s no cats eyes on the road to help you see the lanes clearly. Saying that though I have to say how impressed I am with the French roads, they are so smooth, not a pothole to be seen anywhere. Not even on the small roads, the roads are lovely to drive on.Les mer

      19.05 Day 2 . . . Back In The UK

      19. mai, Frankrike ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

The alarm sounded at 6.00am at the Aire de Bosc-Mesnil on the A28 north east of Rouen.
Up and out taking Loup for a leg stretch before we set off for the Chunnel. A couple of croissants and coffee’s grabbed we were on the road at 7am as planned.
We arrived at the Euro Tunnel site and immediately went to the pet reporting area. Always a mad place with so many dogs, it is always a good spot for an accident - and so it proved.
Loup out of his crate I decided to adjust his lead and bent down to do so, leaning forward. It was at this point Loup saw a dog exit the pet reporting office and set off at full speed to go say hello. Due to my stance it took no effort for him to have me full face plant in the car park, still hanging onto the lead at full arm stretch. Back on my feet we went into the office, only for round two to start - too many dogs in a confined space lead to much barking and frivolity and general mischief. It wasn’t long before I left Tre inside to do the paperwork while I took the mutt outside.
All booked in we went to park and wait our crossing.
At 1145am we were onboard and departing France.
Arriving in the UK due to the time difference at 1130am we got on the road only just remembering in the nick of time to drive on the left.
We drove to Tunbridge Wells and parked up - walking in to surprise Melissa at work, we bumped into her as she was leaving her building to go for lunch . . . Complete luck!!
After a short natter and confirming a time to pick her up in the evening, we drove to Haysden Country Park near Tonbridge to take Loup on a long walk.
The weather was lovely with just a little breeze as we walked the circumference of the lake. Loup was in his element with so many people on bikes for him to attempt a tyre chew on. The afternoon passed without incident and so we drove to our parking spot for the night.
The Spotted Dog pub at Penshurst allow you to park overnight in their car park if you have a meal in the pub. Unlike some pubs that offer this - they even leave their toilets open overnight for your convenience . . . Brucy Bonus! The location having been checked out and the pub owners spoken to we drove to Tonbridge.
Just after 6pm we picked Lissy up and returned to the Spotted Dog for a fab meal and my first two Guinness for about 6 months.
After a fab evening and meal we dropped Lissy back home before heading back and bedding down at the Spotted Dog.
      Two days done already!

      Wanderung zum Cap Blanc-Nez

      26. august 2022, Frankrike ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

      French Shopping Centre

      8. juli 2022, Frankrike ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Going to a supermarket when you first get to a country is always fun isn't it 🤣
We came here last time, and bought frogs legs. This time I was just wasting time while Brace worked.
I may or may not have shoplifted a drink 🙈 I don't know if it was given to me for free or sold to me to buy at the till.... But I just took it so hopefully the police don't come knocking 🤣 but probably the most interesting part was seeing the UK section of the international iasle... Is that what people think we eat the most of 🤣 half of it is American 🤔Les mer

      Bonjour Frankreich

      25. august 2022, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

      Sightseeing in Calais

      31. august 2019, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C
