Day 7 - Propieres to Le Cergne

      April 28 in France ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Had a fab meal in Propieres - Simon went all out with an entrecôte steak!
      Simon sets a vignette….
Having hobbled out of the restaurant for a post dinner cigarette I was already bracing myself to get through the noisy, busy bar. Which I did with just a few call-outs. Coming back through the bar, I was collared by a loud mouthed French dude, who proceeded to barrack me in front of his little gang as to Where are you from? Are you English? Then speak French, speak French…
Unfortunately my head went to —-!
After my 19 km walk, big steak and beer 😳 we proceeded into an awkward stand off where we all stood in silence. I nearly said ‘Bonjour’ - the only French word that came into my head - thank goodness I didn’t 😂
The cocky French dude - let’s call him Luc - started barracking again and in my fatigued state I muttered ‘le fatigue’ and ‘Bon nuit’. Then I turned to make my escape to find myself trapped behind a large party of new customers making their way into the restaurant 🙄 and all I could hear bouncing off my back was ‘bye, bye English, bye, bye English’ and still I couldn’t think of one clever French phrase to say - not even ‘comment sa va?’ Having made it safely back to the table I must of looked harried as Mary looked up and said ‘you’ve been a twerp haven’t you?’ I sat down and said ‘Yes, I’m afraid so!’
So onwards to today. The ponchos were out and on as it promised to be a wet day ahead! Wasn’t too bad actually main rain came half an hour before arriving at our destination. More mountains, pine forests and lovely views.
A German mother and daughter also doing our route so we overtake them on a daily basis as they set off an hour before us. We are staying in same accommodation as them tonight again so may learn more about them over supper. 18+km completed today.
P.s. Simon says his feet and legs are losing that ‘eczema’ look - which is nice 😊

      Day 6 Ouroux to Propières

      April 27 in France ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

The day started well with lovely sunshine and a good wind to cool us. We went up into the forested mountains.
Our phone app took us on a ‘short cut’ that ended up being up and down a mountain ⛰️!! The plodicus kept cool though there was an edge!! Lunch was had in a graffitied wooden shack high up in the pine trees. The sun disappeared and it was pretty chilly by the end of the walk. Safely to Propières and Simon planning a brandy to get through his trauma. He thinks the cows in this area are very clean but we had run out of steam to photo them!!Read more

      Day 5 Tramayes to Ouroux

      April 26 in France ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Today’s walking started in drizzle! So coats on and backpacks covered. Simon has renamed himself ‘the plodicus’ and he set a good pace. Once again plenty of ascents and some steep descents into the equation! Through muddy trails, the occasional stream that hijacked the path, chilly forests where the gobbledygooks live and some occasional wafts of sunshine. Mary nearly had a hanger meltdown as the village planned for lunch was all closed apart from the loo!! And of course it rained the hardest at this point 😢. Simon remained cool, calm and collected for a change 😂
So we plodded on the last 4km to Ouroux and shocked our landlady with an early arrival. However room was ready and we could chill and have a weird lunch from odds and ends we found in our bags. Looking forward to 7.00 dinner - Simon dreaming of roast chicken with a robust glass or 2 of red wine 🤞🙏
The life of a pilgrim hey!! Just under 17 km accomplished today. Next instalment of ‘the plodicus progress’ tomorrow xx

We made it to Saint-Étienne yesterday. Dinner with Jeanne-Marie, Jean-Francois and Philip. Great to be visiting with old friends

      Eyzin-Pinet

      March 22, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      Lyon Day 1

      December 8, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

We left Paris and headed to our final destination, Lyon! Getting to the train was a little hectic but the ride there was a nice break. Once we arrived, we got to our Air BnB which is in a really cool old building by one of the rivers, and had some lunch at a cute cafe (traditional “Gallettes” which are like savory crepes - so good).

Then, we got picked up for our wine tour! Our tour guide was so great and we got to see two vineyards/local wineries. Learned sooo much about wine. We headed back for dinner (squid ink risotto with bread) then ended with a walk around the Lyon town center!

      Dargoire

      August 12, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

We left Allouis and didn’t make any stops on our way to Dargoire except for our lunch. We got to this small town around 5:00 and we were greeted by an old lady who showed us around and how to work everything. Then we drove around the town looking at things and getting dinner from the supermarket.

The next day we walked in the main part of the town with a small church and a bakery. It was pretty hot walk but worth it because we got to see the amazing scenery which I thought gave a Mexican vibe but no one agreed with me. It was good to see the difference between our country and their country because there were a few differences in architecture and there wasn’t a beach down the road. For the rest of the day we did the usual routine reading, writing and drawing. And then played 500 to finish off.

It went exactly like that the next day, but the 4th day we did something. We went to Lyon. The second biggest city in France next to ParisWe went through all the nice streets and went into a couple of churches. In one of them we saw a old astrological clock. We got a ice cream a saw a big old Roman amphitheatre, which we think was a couple of centuries old. It was cool to see the difference between Paris and Lyon, Lyon seemed to be a-bit more modern, and I noticed the rivers in Lyon seemed much cleaner.

On our 5th day we wanted to get our rest up for our early start on Friday, because on our 6th day we went for a drive up to the tallest mountain in all of Europe. It was a very nice drive because 1 we got to see the sunrise and 2 because we could see all the mountains around us. I also learned that the mountain were going up in a gondola was around 6 times taller than mount Oberon at the Prom. The gondola was pretty big and could fit around 25 people and the way up was one of the scariest things I’ve done in a long time. But the way up the other half and down again wasn’t nearly as scary as the first one. Up on the mountain the air was really thin which I had never felt before, so after you went up like 10 stairs you had to catch your breath again like you just did the 100 meter sprint. The views where amazing and even though in was 30 degree weather down the mountain,it was 2 degrees Celsius on the top. From the mountain we could see all the other mountains(obviously) a few parasailers who were doing a bunch of tricks in the sky, and Italy( which we nearly crossed the border to by accident and nearly got charged 80 euro.)
We got down the mountain, ate lunch and went on this cool red train that took us back up the mountain so then we could go into a glacier. It was worth the big walk to it, because there was a few carvings within it, and the ice was so thick and solid and cold, I felt like a beer in a esky(and that was the most Aussie thing I’ve ever said) but in my opinion it was a good way to wrap up our time in Dargoire.

      Irgendwo in Frankreich

      September 26, 2022 in France ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

      August 27, 2019 in France ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

      May 17, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

      Bonne Nuit!
