      Nice (Nizza)

      December 20, 2023 in France ⋅ 🌙 8 °C

Ich mag also doch weißen Nougat.

      France!

      April 5 in France ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Today, we woke up at 5am. We had to catch the train to go to the hotel for our guided tour! To be honest, the first couple hours with the entire group I was really overwhelmed. There's 40 names we need to remember, and the guide was kinda pushy about the excursions we need to pay for. As the day went on, though, we slowly started meeting some new people and getting to know them. We left Barcelona at 8:00 and started driving to France. For some reason, neither of us thought it would be a good idea to eat before we left. Even though we knew we'd be traveling almost all day. Luckily, at the first small town inside of France, we stopped to grab some sandwiches. We're in brie country so you know I had to get a brie sandwich. Some random check stop on the side of the highway had the best sandwich yet! After 45 minutes, we packed onto the coach again to start heading for Nice, France. After two more hours, we stopped in the town Van Gogh lived in when he cut his ear off and went crazy. We learned the entire community wanted him to leave, which he did on his own terms. I really hope we get to learn more about that crazy mf on this trip. You gotta be crazy to be as talented, I think. In this small town there is a small colleseum! Pearse and I were walking around with a guy named Nick. We sorta accidentally snuck into this coliseum for free lol. We just walked in through the exit. The lady at the desk couldn't give a shit lol. We walked around for about 30 minutes before getting a coffee. I paid for all 3 of our Americanos, which came out to 5€. I handed the lady a 50 dollar bill. She gave me 65 back in change! I swear I'm honest, and at home, I'd definitely say something, but I'm on vacation and need all the money I can get lol. Basically, she bought our first drinks tonight lol. So we ripped this little town off twice in 45 minutes. We got back on the coach for the last 3 hours of our nine hour drive. The last hour and a bit we drove up the coast of France! When I was awake, I honestly thought it was some of the most beautiful scenery ever! We had the mountains to our left and the ocean to our right. I'm so happy the tour guide likes music and has it on the whole time because I need music, and my left earbud is dodgy. People sing along and just talk almost the whole time. It might get old after a while, but it made me feel more comfortable. Everyone seems like they get along really well! When we finally made it to the hostel, we started some laundry, showered and right out the door to our included dinner. We had beef stew and mashed potatoes. At first I was disappointed it was beef stew but it turned out to be delicious. I told a stupid story from lisbon everyone thought was pretty funny and managed to finish two other peoples stew lmao. I felt so bad for the employees though because there's 40 of us and english is their second language lol. We had to be at our bar for 10:15 to celebrate our new friend, Nicks, birthday. In this bar we could stand on the tables and do whatever we wanted really lol. They had some live music that was awesome. These guys performed all night and the crowd loved all of it. We were banging on the roof and singing, dancing and chanting random shit between songs. It was 30000 degrees inside though, we were absolutely drenched in sweat lol. I had so much fun with our new friends! Once the guys were done performing we made our first mistake in France. We left the bar to find a new one with some other hostel mates. We didn't end up finding anywhere other than a gay bar. I'm definitely good on that. So we went back to the hostel with some other guys. We went to the basement and had a ping-pong tourney. We're gonna get up early and go walking with some people from out hostel along the beach of Nice and see what's up. I was so stressed and overwhelmed this morning but after our first full day with the crew I already feel so much better!Read more

      Nizza Tag 1

      September 22, 2022 in France ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

      Day trips

      September 28, 2022 in France ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Our first week in Antibes flies by between boat jobs, home schooling and skip-diving. Now Colm and Ruby know all the best places in town to scavage for cardboard boxes which we need for shipping things home. Our glamourous yachting lifestyle is ending soon.

Once DHL have collected the boxes we take the twenty minute train ride to Nice. We hop on a tram and head straight to the old town. We wander down through the lovely streets until we reach to the water front. There is a fine breeze blowing and we have a great time watching the azure water break into white waves and crash onto the stony beach. Ruby observes how funny it is that even when we are not on the boat we always find our way to the sea, its our favourite place to be.

On another afternoon the skipper stays on board while we three hire bikes and cycle to Cap d’Antibes and Juan Les Pins. Over the phone Mum sings me ‘Where do you go to my lovely’ and I realise why ‘Juan Les Pins’ is so familiar. We stop for an ice cream and a swim at a pretty beach on Cap d’Antibes and decide to bring Donal and Margaret here when they come to visit in a few days time.

      Nice

      June 15, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We arrived in Nice, on the Cote d'Azur this afternoon. Our hotel faces the beach and the Mediterranean.

There has been a settlement at Nice since 400B.C. It is the second oldest town in France, with Marseille the oldest. Much of the 'old town' of Nice dates from the 14th-16th centuries.

Nice was part of Italy until 1860, when it was ceded to France. It retains a predominantly Italian feel, or 'nicoise', the name given to its local culture.

We went for a walk in the old town where we had tea and enjoyed the sights and sounds of the narrow streets and squares which were crammed with people.

      Côte d’Azur

      July 14, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

      Marc Chagall National Museum

      September 21, 2023 in France ⋅ 🌧 70 °F

The Marc Chagall National Museum (Chagall Biblical Message) is a French national museum dedicated to the work Marc Chagall – essentially his works inspired by religion.

The museum was created during the lifetime of the artist, with the support of the Minister of Culture André Malraux, and inaugurated in 1973. It is also known as the "National Museum Marc Chagall Biblical Message" ("Musée national message biblique Marc Chagall") as it houses the series of seventeen paintings illustrating the biblical message, painted by Chagall and offered to the French State in 1966. This series illustrates the books of Genesis, Exodus, and the Song of Songs.

Joking aside about Chagall that hangs in our kitchen... it's really beyond AWESOME to be face to face with these gigantic paintings and marvel at the colors
These a collection of smaller prints incl.Paraduse, Creation of Man, Creation of Woman The Chariot of Elijah mosaic and then the Big ones

      Musée Marc Chagall

      November 26, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

      Last day on French Riviera

      June 6, 2022 in France ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

      Miles: 11.8 Steps: 28120
      Flights stairs: 43

Today, after 76 days together, Jordan and I split up for a good portion of the day. I wanted to see more sites, and she wanted to lay on the beach … so we did just that. I found it fun adventuring on my own, and I’m sure Jordan enjoyed time alone from me to just do her own thing. We may do more of that as we move along.

I hiked up Castle Hill, which strangely, didn’t have a castle on it any longer. Great views tho. Then I took a long walk along the “coastal path” which was literally a path carved out of the stones on the shore that went from Nice to the city we went to yesterday by train. I ended up walking 9 miles between the castle-less hill and the path. Felt great tho.

I’m remembering back to the first hike in Mazatlan … El Faro, the lighthouse on the hill. I hardly made it up that day — and todays hike, which was much harder, I tackled with little difficulty. Nice to see the improvement physically.

My entire life I have unhealthily weighed myself every morning, sometimes multiple times a day. I have been obsessed with being overweight since I was probably 15 yrs old. It’s been very freeing on this trip to not give a second thought to how much I weigh. To measure myself by my fitness level, by my strength, by my ability to climb a mountain, by how my clothes are feeling on me … instead of a number on a scale. A bonus I’m finding of this trip.

      Evening stroll.

      May 15, 2022 in France ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

We went out to look for something inspired for dessert. We found the perfect French dish. Crapes. Mine was drizzled with chocolate and Joseph was flamed with Grand Mariner. And some great interesting places to see.Read more
