      July 15, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

First full day in Berlin we did a bike tour of all the main sites.

Andy, our tour guide, was full of knowledge and passion and made it so easy to follow along with the history of Berlin.

Shocking to think about all the things shared!!

So many parks in Berlin, majorly utilized. Kept beautiful and clean!

      buntes Treiben im Mauerpark

      October 1, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

      Berlin fm

      November 7, 2023 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 8 °C

:-(Read more

      Berlin Tag 3

      December 17, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ -3 °C

      Berlin Wall Memorial

      December 12, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 30 °F

Today was our first time visiting one of the numerous Berlin Wall sites scattered throughout the city. Through school we had heard of the Berlin Wall but I don’t think either of us fully grasped the impact and sheer scope of separation.

While strolling along the memorial we both learned about the phases of construction and the stories of the lives torn apart by the border closure.

Our favorite part of the memorial was seeing a section that was still fully intact with the inner wall on the east side. Peering through the tiny slit to see the wall that seemed like an eternity away must have been disheartening for so many stuck in the east.

      Mauer Park

      July 3, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Today we woke up a little late and had brunch with Jamin again and then went to Mauer Park where there was some thrift stores, food stands, and art ones too! Then we stopped by at this place where these dancers were performing. Next we went to the english park and hung out there for a little bit. Walked around the gardens, read my book, and took a nap. Then we went back to the hostel to chill and get out of the heat before meeting up with Jamin for dinner and ice cream.Read more

      Berlin Wall (cont’d)

      December 19, 2019 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

This is a compilation of some of the other attractions of the German Wall visit.
The four upright vertical steel girders represented the site of one of the GDR guard towers. We also visited the Berlin Wall museum which profiled the type of people who tried to escape some of which were successful and some of which perished.
There was a well documented section of the wall called the “death strip” which was 80-100 metres wide between both walls and was patrolled by the GDR soldiers with orders to shoot to kill anyone who was attempting to escape from the East.
The wall was constantly being upgraded over a 30 year period so counteract more sophisticated attempts to escape by the increasingly frustrated people of the GDR whose rights were being increasingly stripped and also by the fact that families and relatives had been separated since the wall was constructed.

      Il muro

      August 9, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

      Berlin 3rd - 5th May 2018

      May 4, 2018 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

It’s time to explore our second stop... BERLIN 😁
We started the morning with moi cooking the others eggs on toast for breakfast (my time at Shellys Cafe has come in handy). I then ventured out on my own to the shop across the road to buy some drinks for the day ahead and made sandwiches for our lunch to take with us (mother Jess!)

We then caught the tram just a short way to the centre of Berlin. Luck was not on our side again. In Berlin you have to stamp your tram ticket in a machine the moment you get on as Katie and I did. Leah unfortunately failed to do so and just our luck a man came along to check the tickets to find Leah’s wasn’t stamped :/ Straight off the tram we were all pulled (luckily at the stop we wanted anyway) and leah was fined €60 😬 We didn’t let this spoil the mood and it was onwards to the tv tower of Berlin where we then found a hop on and off bus tour of the city.

The first stop on the tour was the Brandenburg gate, the gate which once divided the city! It was then onto see an impressive looking building, the reichstag. The bus then took us round to see many other historical monuments of germany. We decided to get off the bus for a break along the shopping quarters of Berlin where shops like Michael Kors, Tommy Hillfiger and Gucci can be found! It was here that we stumbled across the famous Hard Rock Cafe where we decided to have cheeky afternoon cocktails! Little did we know how strong they would be and so we all came away feeling a little bit drunk 😂 (swear the alcohol is a lot stronger abroad).

After a quick look around the designer stores dreaming about what we can’t afford but acting like we can, we boarded the bus again to take in the rest of the sites of Berlin whilst consuming our sandwiches I had previously made with the intent of sobering up quicker 😂 The architecture is amazing in Berlin (something gavlar would love 😁).

Once back to where we started nearly 5 hours after we first boarded the bus we decided to go and have a look around the museum of German history. I managed to talk the woman into letting us all in at a student rate ;) It was extremely interesting but also very sad to learn about Hitler and the Jews. It was then time to relax and so we found a nice cafe in the middle of the street in front of the brandenburg gate where we sat and had a drink and some chips. We sat in the cafe watching the sun go down, making use of the free wifi, until it went a bit chilly and we thought it was a good time to head back to the apartment.

On the way back to the apartment I realised there were statues of bears all across the city and so that was me occupied for the next hour taking photos of all the bears I could find. We managed to get back using the only tram we were allowed on that day after leah forgot to stamp her ticket. A quick trip to the shops to buy a bottle of wine and we were 3 happy girls chilling in our apartment and enjoying our evening.
