Layby near Marktschellenberg, Germany!May 23, 2017 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C
Today was Day 2 of our flight 'up North' to Sweden and there were 1892km left on our journey to Gothenburg!
We are already getting our heads in a muddle, having been in Slovenia yesterday morning, stayed last night in Austria and tonight in Germany!
The Austrian roads were wider so we were able to make faster progress. We climbed into mountain territory, at a mile high we reached the snow line but kept rising to an altitude of 1741m above sea level! The mountain slopes were sheer, rocky and magnificent.
We passed by several places we'd visited back in November, and eventually turned off the main road onto a steep single track country road and before long we'd passed the small sign telling us we were in Germany! We were getting close to today's overnighter, but we came face to face with a closed road just half a kilometre from it. We took a difficult diversion along which the van barely fitted, only to find a house on the site of the supposed stopover! Grrr. Quickly programming in an alternative we turned and had to retrace our tracks, scraping the underside of the van on the crest of a hill as we went.
With a stroke of luck we came across a large riverside layby soon after rejoining the main road that we were able to stay in overnight because wild camping is legal in Germany! Had we been 1km down the road in Austria we would have had to carry on until we found a designated site. We'd managed 167km today.
Poppy enjoyed a splash in the shallows but the current was too strong to swim. Like yesterday, the afternoon brought thunderstorms but this time they were loaded with hailstones!Read more
