    Black Forest Tour

    August 14, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Today we met up with my old friend Karo and did a Black Forest tour by car.

So we first cycled 🚲 to Basel Badischer Bahnhof and then took the train 🚂 to Schopfheim im Wiesental, which takes 40 minutes in total. Karo picked us up there and we cruised from place to place all day.

We actually wanted to go to the Hasenhorn, a spectacular summer toboggan run, but the queue was too long for us. From then on it went by the nose, whoever had an idea threw it into the ring and off we went.

It was a very cool round through the Black Forest with a suspension bridge, mountain inn, mountain lake to swim in, an old Black Forest farm, coffee roastery and ended with Karo's friend, who had prepared a great dinner. But see for yourself, I have described a few stations in more detail.

Inspired, at 11 a.m. we got on the train back to Basel. What an eventful day! 🥰

    Blackforestline

    August 14, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Since the end of May 2023, a 450 meter long suspension bridge has led over the Todtnau Waterfalls in the Upper Black Forest. Of course we had to go there!

Since the queue at the Hasenhorm summer toboggan run in Todtnau was too long for us and the Todtnau waterfalls are just around the corner, we naturally went to the new suspension bridge. We were lucky, there weren't too many tourists on the road and we parked the car in pole position. A really cool bridge is this…walking over a trellis 120m above the valley rocks!

Here are a few numbers: the total weight of the bridge is 730 tons, the pylons weigh 46 tons, you can tell how the mass vibrates. The height of the pylon is 16 meters, the catwalk weighs 55 tons, the suspension cables weigh 15.4 tons, the wind cable weighs 3 tons, the span of the bridge is 450 meters, the sidewalk width is 1.20 m, the max Capacity is 1000 people and the diameter of the suspension ropes is 76 mm.

The whole thing sways a bit back and forth with the people who move on it, no as much as Windsbraut or any other ship with a little swell. But there were a few people who moved suspiciously slowly and the spasmodic iron grip on the railing revealed that they were moving right on the edge of their comfort zone. 🤣

    Stauffen im Breisgau

    August 14, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

The city of Staufen im Breisgau lies in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and has approximately 7,700 inhabitants and forms, together with the community of Münstertal, Black Forest, a community administrative unit.

It is noted in history and culture for its association with Faust who, according to one source, died in or near Staufen around 1540.

So when we arrived at the edge of the Black Forest in the early afternoon, we thought about driving through the vineyards to the Vitra Museum. But we only got as far as Stauffen, then we were getting too warm and we drove back into the mountains to the Nonnenmattweiher 🌊🤗.

So Staufen lies at the foot of the Black Forest at the exit from the Münstertal. The Black Forest valley of Neumagen goes here directly over into the Rhine plain. The piedmont of the Black Forest is less distinct. North of the valley exit, the steeply rising old castle ruins dominates; to the southwest begins the hilly landscape of the Markgräflerland. Staufen lies on the border between two natural and economic areas: the Rhine plain up to the piedmont with its cultivation of grain, vineyards and vegetables; and the Black Forest, with its cattle and wood, and, until the 19th century, silver mines.

Since 2008, the centre of the city has reported to have risen some 12 centimetres after initially sinking a few millimeters. This has caused considerable damage to buildings in the city centre, including the historical town hall.

The cause for this geological change has been identified as a drilling operation conducted in the summer and autumn of 2007 to provide geothermal heating to the city hall. By 2010, some sections of town had risen by 30 centimetres. In July 2013, no end to the rising process was in sight.

But we mainly were interested in the cake 🍰 and coffee ☕️ of the coffee roastery Eschbach ❤️❤️❤️.

    Nonnenmattweiher

    August 14, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

We were able to escape the heat in the valleys today, but we were still drawn to the water. Mountain swimming pool, mountain lake or mountain river?

Without further ado, we decided on the Nonnenmattweiher.

The Nonnenmattweiher is a dammed lake with a moor or peat island. It is located in the nature reserve of the same name in the southern Black Forest between Badenweiler and Schönau. The lake lies on the eastern slopes of the Köhlgarten massif at about 915 m above sea level and is almost 325 m long, 200 m wide and up to 7 m deep. (3.7 hectares).

There are numerous rare plants around and on the lake. There are the species milkwort and arnica, which are on the red list of endangered species in Germany. A special feature is the peat island floating on the water, which has a vegetation of flat and transitional moors. Entering the island is prohibited. Therefore, the northern half of the lake is separated from the southern part with a peat island by a barrier made of floating logs. Swimming is only allowed in the northern part and without the large peat island in the middle, the lake has 3.1 hectares.

In the heat of August the perfect place to rest ❤️.

    Schneiderhof, Kirchhausen

    August 14, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

The Schneiderhof is a farm museum in Kirchhausen. It was built in Kirchhausen in 1696 and is a Black Forest house, a high column house in the foothills.

Miss Berta Schneider ran the farm alone until 1985. Due to their frugal and simple lifestyle, the property has remained in its original condition for almost a century. Throughout her life, Berta was content with the circumstances of her childhood. "Mir längt's! 'S goht au soo!“ (For me it’s enough, it works like it is!). She was satisfied with herself and her "ever smaller world".

However, the property was now in a desolate condition and so the Endenburg local council decided as early as 1985 that the building must be preserved for posterity in view of its uniqueness and cultural and historical value. A corresponding association was founded. The state monument office classified the farm as a cultural monument of particular importance, and there is increased public interest in its preservation.

Berta Schneider died in 1986 at the age of 91.

In 1987 the non-profit "Association for the Preservation of the Schneiderhof in Kirchhausen e.V." (over 250 members from all over the region), who acquired the property from the community of heirs in the same year with the help of an interest-free loan from the municipality of Steinen. In the following 9 years, a hard core of the association put the dilapidated farmstead back into its original condition. Most of the work was done in-house (over 20,000 unpaid manual hours), some required the help of specialist companies.

Today, the Schneiderhof gives its visitors a clear picture of how our ancestors lived and worked. When the guest crosses the threshold of the house, he feels transported back to earlier times. One has the impression that the farm is alive and the farmers are just out in the fields. The Schneiderhof is furnished down to the smallest detail as it was when Berta was alive - nothing reminds you of a museum in the usual sense!

    Stettemer Wiikeller

    August 15, 2023 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

Today we cycled to Stetten again and ate at Anka's.

As usual, we had a formidable evening with super delicious food (Rösti with chanterelles) and a great Williams from the Martin Sattler distillery in Schliengen. I have rarely drunk such a delicious pear schnapps.

The highlight of the evening was that I met my old friend Jo again after, I don't know, 25 years.

That was really a very successful farewell evening, thanks Anka & Jo! ❤️❤️❤️
