      Roadtrip, in de rij voor eten en les

      Een weekend rijden en je bent opeens in Rome. Op zaterdag komen we tot Como, waardoor we zondag een stuk minder lang in de auto hoeven te zitten.

      Ware het niet dat de rit uiteraard gepland wordt met een schuin oog op de lunch. Ergens halverwege is een restaurant met bijzonder eten uit de regio. Lees: vlees. Dus daar moeten we stoppen. En vaak hoef je maar even in de rij te staan, aldus Michele. Inmiddels weet ik dat ‘maar even’ een rekbaar begrip is en dat blijkt te kloppen. We staan een half uur tussen talloze andere Italianen die hier ook een tussenstop hebben gepland.

      Daarom rijden we uiteindelijk rond vijf uur Rome binnen, daarna nog kilometers over de rondweg, de auto uitpakken en dan zijn we thuis. In de woning hangen ballonnen, we drinken een glaasjes bubbels en dan prop ik mijn spullen zoveel mogelijk in alle hoeken en gaten van het appartement. Michele: I can organize my stuff even better so you have more space.

      Op maandagmorgen stap ik in de metro voor mijn eerste Italiaanse les. En na een toelatingstest word ik in een groep geplaatst met mensen die al simpele gesprekken kunnen voeren.

      Ai. Dat kan ik nog niet.
      Al stamelend baan ik mij een weg door de ochtend, om dan te concluderen dat dit diepe bad mij verplicht te zwemmen. En dat dit helemaal niet slecht is. Maar het betekent wel huiswerk maken en aanpoten. Gelukkig heb ik zes weken les.

      Al met al is het best overweldigend allemaal. Rome voelt waanzinnig groot en alles is nieuw. Gelukkig hebben we het samen gezellig en is al het begin moeilijk. En dat was het eerst.      Read more

      Day 2–9

      Zo, dat was week 1.

      Zo, dat was week 1.

      En die ging razendsnel. Niet voor niets: de dagen voelen propvol. Dat komt mede doordat Rome zo ontzettend groot is: alles kost veel tijd. Dagelijks maak ik de trip naar de school vanaf huis en dat kost ruim een half uur als Michele mij naar het metrostation brengt. Anders tel je daar zo een kwartier bij op. Ons appartement ligt net buiten de gigantische Ring (65 kilometer lang) van Rome en in een miljoenen stad zijn de afstanden groot. Maar metro is zeer comfortabel. Meestal lees ik, Michele leert Nederlands. Voor 35 euro mag ik een maand onbeperkt rondrijden. Dikke prima.

      Ik stap uit de metro bij Republicca en wandel dan zo het historische centrum in. Tot nu toe went dat niet. Na een ochtend lessen, ben ik rond 13 uur klaar en ga ik of in de stad studeren, of reis terug naar het appartement om daar te studeren. Die uren heb ik echt nodig: tot nu toe gaat het leren niet gemakkelijk. Maar volgens Michele maak ik wel vorderingen :). Het afgelopen jaar heeft een wissel getrokken op mij, dus het is wel erg fijn met maar een ding bezig te zijn momenteel.

      Om te ontdekken of ik wat aansluiting met de mensen hier kan vinden ben ik dinsdag naar een Expat borrel geweest, die wordt elke week gehouden. Een mix (van zo'n 30 mensen) uit verschillende landen: Amerika, Rusland, Israel, Australie, Duitsland (veel Duitsers!), alles komt voorbij. En veel Italianen die hun Engels willen verbeteren.

      Een hoop indrukken dus, maar nog geen oordelen, die probeer ik voorlopig uit te stellen. Op donderdag at ik dan eindelijk mijn eerste pasta carbonara (van deze trip) en die smaakt naar meer. Uiteraard.

      Auf dem Rückweg noch am Circus Maximus vorbei.

      Catacombe S.Callisto

      Very interesting trip down into the catacombe. Founded in the 3rd century and the resting place of Popes who were all moved and hidden in the 8th century to keep them safe.
      Very informative guide who was very passionate about his faith and the persecution of Christians.
      Well worth a visit and very quiet.

      Sehr anstrengend aber hat sehr viel Spaß gemacht.
      Eher viele Kinder unterwegs aber zum Glück war ein Vater dabei.

      Ich wäre wohl ein Murmillo geworden.

      In diesen Tagen widme ich mich organisatorischen Dingen. Angesagt sind also nur kleine Aktivitäten wie in den Park gehen oder Joggen. Ein weiterer schöner Moment wartet aber auch hier: eine Herde Schafe läuft mitsamt Schäfer einmal quer durch den Park, wähend ich mich auf meiner Jogging-Route Richtung Sonnenuntergang befinde. 🐑🥰🌇Read more

      So we were pleasantly surprised with Gelato we found that was "senza lattosio" and decided to give it a go. We ordered pistachio and chocolate, and it was delicious. So delicious that we forgot to snap the before picture and realized it half way through 😁 woops !Read more

      We’ve made it.
      Our first ever Airbnb experience. Didn’t go smoothly.
      Flight from Dubia was great. Being daytime, we stayed awake. Food was great. Little bit of a drama with and older customer. He needed medical attention. Hope it wasnt Covid? 🤞🤞
      Pick up from airport was waiting, easy peasy. Drive to Airbnb, 30 min. No key in lock box. Arrrghhhh. 😖

      Rome Day 3b

      We did continue to do a LOT of walking and eventually made it up to the Capitoline Hill. What a magnificent area. We had a coffee and cannolo at the Museum cafe and its terrace had magnificent views. Then we went into the actual museum which as previously was absolutely wonderful - many, many beautiful statues, sculptures, art pieces - including 2 Caravaggios!! The building itself was once again very much a part of the beauty. Afterwards, we walked to the recommended VERSO SERA ristorante and had a brilliant lunch with pasta with tartufo, salad, desserts, Aperol spritz and limoncello!! Back to Camp di Fiori and Josy and I enjoyed purchasing matching Italian aprons! Only a little bit of bartering was involved. We are all loving Rome and Tony my brother & Linda arrive today and we should all be meeting our Italian and New York cousins tomorrow hopefully.Read more

      MANGIA, MANGIA, MANGIA!

      It is much cooler than we expected here and so Craig loaded up the blankets last night and of course, we were over hot. It didn’t help that we went to a Agriturismo ristorante for a nice evening meal (after 8 which is late for us!!). This morning we woke and sort of had breakfast, did the washing etc. Eventually, our cousin Tonino had to stop working on the farm because it was raining. Vera and Aldo, our New York cousins joined us and we decided to go to Anzio to see our nephew’s Apicoltura Rinaldi negozio (retail outlet). He is a honey harvester/ beekeeper now since Covid stuffed up his musical/Jazz careers. Everything Mirko puts his mind to he is excellent at and last year he won the competition for the best honey in Lazio and he came fifth in all of Italy. Fun to see our Rinaldi surname on many products and his partner Marina was very sweet.

      We were then going to drive to the Anzio American War Museum which we have seen before. Hoping to go via the Anzio Bay where many soldiers arrived. However, it was crazy traffic and whilst driving Tonino’s other wonderful son, Michele rang and said we were to pop in for lunch!! We did that and it was a wonderful afternoon with him, his lovely wife Irena, and their cute kids, Martina and Alessio. We ate and ate and tonight we are booked into a 1 Michelin star restaurant!! Oh dear. It certainly is convivial and fun and loud.

      BTW driving down to the honey shop Craig drove having a practice for when we arrive in Catania in a couple of days and of course, he was once again, my hero :)      Read more
