    • Day 19 - Ravello & Minori

      July 28, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Today we had nothing planned for the first Time really since the start of our trip. We slept in and headed down for breakfast at the hotel.

We decided we would walk to Ravello from Minori. In my infinite wisdom I convinced the morning would be better weather wise. So after a call to Chris and Barbs we set off to meet the fate I had created for us, I have since googled this and some count 1500 stairs from bottom to top - I didn’t have the brain power, oxygen or enough cold water to count even past the first lot. Katie soon got the, ‘ok I was wrong maybe this afternoon/evening would of been better’ from me, but we were to far gone to turn back.

On the way up we met some horse carting sacks up the stairs, now we know how they get produce around - poor horses! After 50minutes walking we made it to Ravello, its a cute small town perched up in the mountain. Great views of Minori & Miaori one way and Amalfi and beyond the other - though to see this side, you must enter the paid gardens and most likely through the gift shop… Europe & their gift shops.

Katie and I walked around town, grabbed lunch, got some gelato, saw yet another couple of churches and opted to head back down to Minori.

Once down and we combatted the leg shaking from coming down so many stairs we went for a swim at the beach.

Later we ventured over to Miaori via the road - Katie didn’t find it as much as a blood rush as me walking with the vehicles (Barbs I promise Katie is safe) - looked around then opted for dinner and some more gelato back in Minori.

      Costa d'Amalfi - Positano à Maiori

      October 20, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

    • Day 27

      Amalfi & Ravello, Italy

      September 1, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

      What we did:
      - Woke up to catch an 8:15am ferry. The ferry stop was at the bottom of lots of stairs so Trent pulled out his super human strength to carry all of our bags down multiple flights of stairs (go trent). UPDATE 11/1 - Brian carried his own bags. Grabbed takeaway breakfast and found a prime spot on the top of the ferry to see all of the views. Great weather as we passed Sorrento, Capri, Positano, and Praiano to get to Amalfi.
      - Once we arrived, we put our bags in temporary storage with a very nice Italian shop owner and hired a taxi to take us up to Ravello. Found a nice wine bar for lunch that we stuffed ourselves with wonderful italian dishes and wine! Walked around Ravello and visited Villa Ruffalo to walk through the estate's gardens. Found a great gelato spot for a quick afternoon snack before trekking down Ravello back to Amalfi.
      - The path was not well marked in the beginning but we found our way down the “gentle sloping path” per Brian’s description. However, majority of the hike was stairs and had our legs shaking at the end. It was fun to go through lemon orchards, grape trees, and lots of gardens and Italian yards throughout! When we reached the bottom we discovered Amalfi was celebrating some sort Byzantine holiday and we were unable to take the bus back to our Airbnb. We split a cab with another couple and checked into our wonderful Airbnb! Lots of good views and patios for us to hangout on.
      - Trent and Steph hiked up to the local market for some groceries and wine (from which we discovered we did not actually have a working wine opener) and hung out until dinner.
      - Found a local dining spot called GAS Bar, which ended up being a point of reference for all of our travels from there on out, and walked along the road 10 minutes to get to the bar (this really freaked out Helen and Brian). We had a quick dinner overlooking the Mediterranean at GAS bar and made the dangerous trek back up in the dark with our cell phone flashlights to warn passing cars of or presence (and which one of the locals mocked us for using our flashlights). Proceeded then to get locked out of our Airbnb due to a faulty lock and climb through the windows to finally go to bed for the day! Note: the door was fixed the next day and we could enter the premises through the front door for the rest of the stay!

      What we ate:
      - Sorrento ferry snacks: coffees, croissants, sandwiches
      - Babel wine bar bistro & art: Recommended red wine (a huge hit with the group! see picture), the special ham ravioli, the special lemon pasta, mixed salad with goat cheese, lemon, orange, and chestnut honey, and of course a caprese salad!
      - Baffone Gelateria Artigianale: lemon, strawberry, and coffee were some of the flavors chosen!
      - GAS bar: Pohlman’s all ordered spaghetti carbonara and Steph got lasagna.

      Fun facts:
      - Trent and Steph feel validated refusing to take on the trek of hiking up to Ravello after traversing the many stairs down from Ravello to Amalfi.
      - The donkey is symbol of luck and good fortune amongst the locals of the Amalfi coast.

Lovely seafood pasta in a jar at Mama Rosa back in Salerno.

      Ravello Day 1

      April 26, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

After a wonderful nights sleep in our beautiful room we went downstairs to get some breakfast. Then we went into town to explore. We climbed tons of stairs to get to this amazing villa which had the best view on the island probably. The Villa is called villa Cimbrone. We walked around and saw a lot of statues, wisteria, flowers and gardens but the best part was the view. Ravello is sort of on a peninsula high above the ocean. The villa is at the very end of the town. After this we went back to the hotel and lounged by the pool for a while. The temperature was only 66 but the sun was out. It was a little windy but the pool was heated. I was trying to get a tan. We had lunch at the pool. When it was time for our spa appointment we went into the spa which was ok. The wet sauna was not great which is my favorite part about a spa. Once we were done with the spa we got ready for dinner. My parents bought some pottery at a pottery shop earlier in the day and met the owner. His name is Pascal. He also owns a hotel and restaurant. We met Pascals wife at the pottery shop and she was going to drive us to the restaurant. They make tons of different dishes in tons of patterns. They even do custom stuff. The restaurant is in the older original part of Ravello. It's next door to the first church in Ravello. The food was not to good surprisingly. After dinner we rode back to the hotel and went to bed. We are leaving tomorrow.
      Ciao,
      Andrew

      Travel Day to Ravello

      April 25, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Today we are leaving Sorrento. We are going to make a few stops along the way to our final destination, the town of Ravello on the Amalfi Coast.
The Amalfi coast is considered to be from the town of Positano to the town of Vietri sul Mare. Sorrento is around the peninsula from Positano. There is a town called Amalfi. It’s the main historical center of the coast.
Our first stop is a small town, Massa Lubrense, made famous by Stanley Tucci’s show. The restaurant is called Lo Scoglio. It’s right on the water. The dish Stanley ate and loved is Spaghetti Alla Nerano. Nerano is the town where the pasta dish was created. The dish is very simple. The spaghetti are covered in a very light creamy sauce made from provolone and pasta water. It has fried zucchini slices on the top. It was amazing!!! After lunch we headed to Positano. The road along the coast is extremely windy. The kids thankfully fell asleep so barfy didn’t make another appearance. It’s Tuesday, April 25 and its Italian Independence Day. So Positano was crowded! We drove through the town and drove out. Well we inched our way in bumper to bumper traffic. We passed by Amalfi and there wasn’t anyone there. Why did all the Italians decided to go to Positano ? We made it to our hotel in Rovello and got settled into our room. We went to explore the town a little before the sun sets. I decided to go and sit by the pool and work on some emails. It’s still quite chilly here. We were sure hoping for some sun and pool time. Gabe has a local place chosen for dinner. It was run by a total Nani! She took the orders and bring kids chocolate candies. She was funny. Andrew and I both got soup. Renee wanted the hamburger but it came out without a bun. She still ate it. Like a hamburger steak. The food is different here. So far…I’m not impressed. There is always tomorrow….Ciao.

    • Day 4

      Ravello

      March 3 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Hung out the washing and hoped for sunshine. Off to Ravello which meant two buses, lots of hairpin bends. Almost 1.5 hrs in Amalfi for connection but a beautiful day and a lot more locals and tourists about. Standing room only on the bus and packed!
Ravello is high up and "the most elegant of the small cities of the Amalfi coast". The views are amazing, particularly from Villa Rufolo. In the summer they hold classical concerts here which must be fantastic. There is a huge auditorium on the hillside, not unlike the Eden one in UK.
A beautiful, serene place and we were able to appreciate that serenity virtually on our own.
We opted to take The Lemon Path back down to Minori. It took us well over an hour to negotiate countless steps and beautiful views, glimpses of private gardens and endless lemon trees laden with fruit.
Legs like jelly we headed to our favourite aperitivo bar. The two glasses of Prosecco were divine!

      Pfad der Götter/ Amalfiküste

      September 4, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Wandertag, Hurraaa! Bus Platz. Da standen wir also.

      October 21, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Weitere, begeisterte Gartengäste waren u.a.
