      Manarola for dinner

      August 24, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

After the boat trip we got changed. I wanted to see Manarolo.
We caught the train and ended up at La Spezia station 🚉 in error. Caught train back to Riomaggiore. Off the train, walked down a long tunnel to the mariner.

Riomaggiore is a steep skinny fishing town. A quick look around we found it too touristy and not enough restaurants so we caught a 4min train to the next town Manarolo.

Manarolo is a pretty town. Walking through the back streets toward the bridge at the front.

It was nightime with twinkling lights everywhere lending a magical atmosphere.

I wanted to sit and eat at a restaurant looking out at the little bay below us. So we hopped in line. A short wait and were ushered to our seats. I enjoyed the pesto Gnocchi and barbecued prawns. Our waitress was attentive and fast.

A group of men possibly on an Italian bucks night were making their way up thru the township singing. It was like a mini festival. They were all wearing calamari sunglasses! 😎

We enjoyed a slow walk back to our precious hotel.

    • Pesto Impresto 🌿🧀 🍷

      June 12, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

      Wow! Wow! Wow! ☀️🤩

What an amazing experience this was!

Nessum Dorma is a renowned restaurant that sits above a cliff top in Manarola. This is one of the few ways you are able to get in without a reservation. It was worth every single euro of the €60 we paid.

Not only was the location absolutely amazing. Gobsmackingly beautiful& stunning but the staff and the presentation of the entire experience was out of this world! Perfect 😍

The owner, Simone, won the piece of land the restaurant is on in a competition. Only three people entered and he won the right to build whatever he wanted overlooking the Manarola Bay. Surprisingly, there were only three people who actually entered the competition in total. Now that he has made an absolute success of it the locals are constantly trying to make it hard for him. It seems he is having similar experiences with some of the locals as Richard and I have had. Many of them begrudge others for being here. What a shame! He has done an amazing job. The pesto experience happens in the morning and then people are lining up down the path to come into the restaurant to eat. Without a reservation it is not going to happen.

Anyway we were given all of the necessary ingredients of quality including local garlic, fresh basil, local cheese and pine nuts. We were told exactly how to perfect the most delicious pesto I have ever eaten. We were never rushed and constantly supported and always in good humour.

Towards the middle of the experience we were each given a glass of local wine 🍷 which was slightly salty due to the region terrace agriculture and wine growing right beside the sae. Then came the most delicious 😋 platter: individually prepared and passed to every single participant. We were allowed to take as long as we like to enjoy and devour the food and the view. And also there was a competition to win a local bottle of wine… Everybody was a winner! 🥳👍🏻🍷

I would put this up with one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

Every single moment was perfectly orchestrated and we felt honoured to be part of the group. W🙃Right down to the moment that we were gently sprayed with mists of water that where perfectly constructed within the balcony frame construction. This is the true meaning of entrepreneurship. He deserves every success and we had the best time enjoying what Simone has created!

The 10 gorgeous young Italian waiters added quite a significant benefit of this experience as well…🥰😝😝

This was a brilliant way to finish our week in the Italian Riviera! 🍸👍🏻🥰

This took place in Manarola, the final of the 5 towns (Cinque Terre)

      💚🤍❤️

      Cinque Terre

      September 5, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

      Hiking from Corniglia to Manarola

      October 13, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Our last hiking day, tomorrow we fly home to Berlin. Once again we used the train for the journey to our starting point. We started at Corniglia, the village is on the mountain and we hat to gain 100 meter on altitude before reaching the village Centre. I think Corniglia ist the most picturesque village from the 5 villages on the Cinque Terre Tour. After a small break it was once again a steep accent with one step following the next until we reached the altitude of 433 meters. After that it was a lovely walk through vine yards , with a great view of the coast line and Corniglia. We made a stop in the village of Volastra before we took to the very steep decent into Manarola. The path was steep but the view of the village of Manarola was breathtaking. After a short walk through the village it was back on the train to Bonassola. Well that was a fantastic week in the Ligurien and we visited every village on the Cinque Terre, it was just out of this worldRead more

      ..... CORNIGLIA

      March 5 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      Corniglia - Cinque Terre

      June 26, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Inatt sover jag på Ostelle Corniglia. Fantastisk atmosfär. Inte själva vandrarhemmet kanske, även om det också är väldigt fint. Men hela Cinque Terre. Turistfälla, absolut. Men också genuint på något sätt. Fem toast av fem möjliga.Read more

      Cinque Terre

      September 8, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

      Cinque Terre
A day at the beach… two actually, but this beach is somewhat different.
Cinque Terre was the destination I was anticipating the most; and the place I’m least likely to see again.

I was looking forward to the beautiful pastel buildings pressed into the valley along the coast. I could taste the peace of a tourist town with no cars, no golf carts and no scooters. A tourist destination, simply at a slower pace. A few more days on the coast, coffee on the rooftop above the town each morning, and a last few minutes under the moonlight at night. We got all those things. Cinque Terre is charming without a doubt. A tourist town that asks cruise ships NOT to come.

But why not return? Quite simply, it is the stop where we have no unfinished business. We did Cinque Terre and we loved it – maybe not the hill, but we loved it.
We saw every shop and every restaurant and lots of GELATO.
Cinque Terre (Five Lands) is five coastal towns. We stayed in Riomaggio in an airB&B with a large patio on the roof, overlooking the town. Just absolutely beautiful each morning, afternoon and evening. It was a great place to relax. Church bells make watches and alarm clocks unnecessary. We found ourselves in the middle of 3 churches within 300 yards.
We were told that the neighboring town of Monterosso had the best beach, which meant that the “sand" is better and the beach is set up with chairs and umbrellas. We had a nice relaxing day.

The ‘sand’ is actually a reasonably small gravel – and it was actually nice to go to the beach and not leave with sand everywhere. The waves wash it onto the beach and retract with a rattle as the turquoise water sifts through the rock. The visibility is like nothing I have ever seen. If I were scuba diving, I would expect 100 foot visibility.

Our second day at the beach was in Riomaggio. (We were somewhat stuck in town due to a national train strike). The beach here is like river rock and the rattle is even louder. As we swam (bobbed) in the water, we rode the swells that were sometimes 5 foot tall. The beach is just below the train as the train is turned inside the edge of the mountain.

Where the train comes out of the mountain at the base of the valley that creates the village, there is a plaza built on top of the train tunnel. Local children are playing soccer, riding tricycles, and drawing on the concrete with chalk - all in the same space as their parents watch out over them, all of this amongst all the tourist as they pass by to get to and from the beach.

We enjoyed. We relaxed. And we recommend (to those that can do lots of steps and steep hills), but we move on to the next Italian treasure.

      Gorgeous Cinque Terre

      August 25, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

After 3 hours sleep we got the train to Cinque Terre and wow what an amazing place!! We were shattered so managed 2/5 of the towns that eve before crashing but still did all the steps up to Corniglia and the beach place Monterosso for a lil pizza and ice cream. Then an amaaaaazing sleep in an air conditioned private room 😍😍😍 next day got up early to go to the shop to get stuff for breakfast and lunch (£4 for it all we are saver queens) then headed back to Monterosso to start our hike. It was sweaaaty and we struggled at first but the views of Vernazza made it definitely worth it!!! A swim was needed before eating our amazing focaccia sandwiches and hopping onto the train to Manarola. This place was again beautiful and we watched people jumping off rocks before we stopped for a coke to cool down (€5 not quite budget queen behaviour :/ ) also got told we couldn’t play cards because it’s illegal in Italy ??? We were baffed just let me play shithead 😭 onto the final town of Riomaggiore for a mooch and a smaller walk to play where’s wallie with the people and colourful umbrellas!! Decided we fancied another meal of bread and cheese (what can beat it) and a sunset swim followed by people watching!! Then it was time to say goodbye to Cinque Terre but we’ll both be back (again with more money- finding there’s a bit of a theme with Italy). Now at the train station where we keep getting told our overnight train is more and more delayed :( will see if we make it to Pompeii!Read more
