  • Here we go, here we go.

    27 oktober 2022, Australien ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Final checks and we left home around 10.00 - happy in the knowledge the council workers were attending to the holes in our road. Fuel stop and Maccas lunch at Wallan around midday then off our separate ways to Geelong. Paul and Trish had a truck jack-knife in front of them but survived and we met up with them at the boat quay.

Once at Corio Quay, we joined the queue for the quarantine check and then loading.

Paul and Trish were the second car on followed by us in third place. It looks like we are well positioned for a good start tomorrow.

Found our rooms and were pleasantly surprised to see a bottle of wine and two glasses on the coffee table. Trish and Paul joined us (byo glasses) and we drank our bottle, deciding that their bottle would come in useful somewhere on our travels.

Had dinner at The Kitchen Pantry. For $35 / person, it was a smorgasbord with salads, salmon, pork belly, roast beef and roast veggies. Because we are inside the first two weeks of sailing from Geelong, we also had an entree of oysters and salmon. Unfortunately, this will not be available on the return trip.

Checked out the Tas tourism desk where Trish and Paul obtained their Parks Pass.

Need an early night as we disembark at 6:30am tomorrow and head to Penguin for breakfast.

  • Devonport to Stanley.

    28 oktober 2022, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Up at 5am after a VERY rough crossing. Disembarkation was from 6.30. Announcements called passengers according to the deck their car was on. After being the third car on, we were the second last off…

Our destination for breakfast was Penguin. We arrived just before 8 and the bakery looked like a good proposition.

During brekky we decided that Guide Falls at Ridgley would be a nice little detour on our way to Stanley. They are a twenty minute drive from Burnie with a ten minute walk to the falls. It was certainly worth it.

Arrived in Stanley about 11.00am. As 2.00 pm was the earliest we could check in to our accommodation, we decided on a chairlift ride to the top of The Nut and then lunch. The chair lift was closed for maintenance (one of the cables was dodgy!) and the walk to the top looked far too difficult.

After lunch at the Touchwood cafe (scallop pies are the speciality of Stanley) and a new scarf for Janette from their gift shop, we checked into our B&B, the Ark. Weather truly bleak so we spent time in our lovely warm rooms with sea views sorting and resting up before going to dinner at Hursey Seafoods.

Well … we headed off with great expectations of a crayfish/seafood dinner with a table by the window looking out to a sea view. Booked early, for 6.00pm and were surprised at how busy it was at that early time. Oh dear, Saputo were hosting a dinner for the local dairy farmers and our booking seems to have disappeared in the process.

Young staff handled it very well and we were well looked after - albeit in a makeshift private dining room. We were glad we were away from the noisy main restaurant. Seafood platters were great and the coffee brulee sensational. Even better was the fact that (probably due to some big hints from Trish and the presentation of the email booking confirmation) the bottle of Joseph Chromy Pinot Gris was on the house!

  • Dip Falls and Big Tree

    29 oktober 2022, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Organised last night that we would have a cooked breakfast this morning at 8.00am. So, tea, muesli, egg and bacon followed by a coffee, all prepared by our hosts, Rhonda and Chris.

Our plan for the day was to visit Dip Falls and the Big Tree and then head to the Rhododendron Gardens at Burnie before heading to Cradle Mountain for tonight's accommodation.

On the way we realised we had been a tad ambitious with what we were to fit in. We decided to miss the Rhododendron Gardens.

Dip Falls were spectacular! It was a steep walk to the viewing platform at the base of the falls, made easier by a good walkway and steps with a handrail - if 220 steps each way can be considered easy!

The big tree is wrongly named - it should be the enormous tree or the gigantic tree. It really is difficult to express how big it is.

Drove to Wynyard for lunch and then headed for Cradle Mountain.

The drive from Wynyard to Cradle Mountain is very picturesque along a winding road.

The forestry people seem to be changing from pines to Blue gums as their plantation timber. There are large felled areas with huge stacks of logs ready for transportation.

Arrived at Cradle Mountain Lodge about 3.00pm, registered and went to our room. Trish and Paul arrived soon after us. Even though the weather was quite bleak, Janette and I went for one of the short walks available to Pencil Pine Falls. It's an easy ten minute walk each way along a boardwalk with steps and handrail.

We were booked into the restaurant for dinner at 6.30pm, so arranged to meet for drinks in the lounge, by the fire, at 5.30.

Dinner was excellent! We will be rolling home if we're not careful…

Breakfast in Pepper's Restaurant, pack the car, check out and head to the visitor centre to get tickets for the shuttle bus to Dove Lake. The Ranger issuing our tickets told us about two ten minute (?) walks with excellent photo ops. We decided these would be within our capabilities.

After the totally bleak weather on Friday and Saturday, we could not believe our luck with today being clear, sunny and warm.

Arrived at Dove Lake car park about 9.30am. We decided that our first walk was to be to the old boat shed. More than ten minutes but certainly worth the effort. Then back and around to Glacier Rock. The only extra offering on that side really was to be able to photograph the boat shed from across the water.

Then time to head off to Zeehan for lunch…

  • Wee Georgie Wood

    30 oktober 2022, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Headed off from Cradle Mountain towards Strahan via Tullah and Zeehan.

Tullah has a little steam train called Wee Georgie Wood. It is operated one weekend a month by a group of four volunteers. It's a small engine once used to haul ore. We 'did our bit' to support them by going for a ride before heading for Zeehan.

The idea was to meet up in Zeehan for lunch. There's not much in Zeehan on anyday, but on a Sunday it's pretty well closed. We found a hot and greasy and had a toastie and coffee. Not the tastiest ever, but it will do till we reach Strahan - another 42kms.

Once in Strahan, we found our B&B and moved in. We'll be here for two nights and each room has a washer and drier in the bathroom. So, washing so far will done.

We agreed to meet up at 3.30pm and have a look around. Guess what? We heard about some waterfalls! The Hogarth Falls are accessed through a park on the edge of town. It is a 1.2km walk each way. The path follows alongside the stream. The tannins in the water created the most amazing colours. In many ways, this was superior to the falls.

Our dinner booking was for 6.30pm at Risby Cove Restaurant. This had been booked for many months and we were looking forward to a lovely dinner. Unfortunately, it had been re-opened a few days ago with a new chef and it really wasn't as good as they thought it was…

  • Gordon River cruise.

    31 oktober 2022, Australien ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

Down to the quay at 8.15 for 8.30 departure.

Weather rainy again but we are undercover on board the catamaran, Spirit of the Wild.

First, a cruise in Macquarie Harbour while enjoying breakfast. The entrance to Macquarie Harbour is called 'Hell's Gate' and is, apparently, well named. When it's not too rough, they go through 'Hell's Gate'. It was too rough today.

On the way back we paused near the huge fish farms - quite controversial…

From there we headed for the mouth of the Gordon River. Once in the river, the captain slowed the boat. Speed in the river is about 8 knots (I think) so the boat's wash doesn’t damage the banks.

In the river, at the lower speed, the boat was absolutely silent (whisper mode). It just sliced silently through the water. This is because it's powered by an electric motor not a fuel powered motor.

The banks are heavily vegetated right down to the water.

We docked at Heritage Landing and had a walk through the rainforest (temperate). Back on board to see a buffet lunch for us to line up for. There were various salads, antipasto, smoked salmon and hot ocean trout plus wine and beer etc.

We ate this while heading for Sarah Island. Sarah Island, like Norfolk Island, was used as a secondary penal colony. This meant that convicts who offended again got sent to these harsher places.

We had a one hour guided tour with a ranger. Apart from a squall while there it was very enjoyable and interesting.

Would you believe, afternoon tea was waiting when we got back on board.

Landed back at 2.30pm and headed back to our digs.

Just got to work out where to eat tonight after the play we are booked to see - 'The Ship that never was'. The ranger who guided us around Sarah Island will be in the play. He suggested that if we want to know what happened to the convicts that commandeered a boat and sailed away, we should go to the play tonight.

The ship that never was is claimed to be Australia’s longest running play - more like a very funny pantomime.

It relates to the history we were taught on Sarah Island this morning. A Scottish shipwright, a Mr Hoy, used convict labour to build ships with huon pine on the island. The last one constructed was 'borrowed' by the convicts and they 'escaped'.

They play tells this story and what happens after.

Some were caught and charged with piracy and mutiny. This, and absconding, meant they could be hung.

The play tells of how they managed to escape the noose…

  • West Coast Wilderness Railway

    1 november 2022, Australien ⋅ 🌧 6 °C

Had to be at Queenstown by 8.30am to catch the West Coast Wilderness Steam Train. Left Strahan at 7.20am. Suggested time for the 42km trip is 45 minutes. Because the road is extremely winding and it's very wet weather, we allowed an hour plus. Received several ice warnings in the car as the temperature went down to as low as 3 degrees at high altitudes.

Arrived in plenty of time to pick up our boarding pass and have a coffee and, of course, check out our loco.

Nice group of people on board. Stopped at three stations where we were able to stretch our legs. I think the main reason for the stops was for the loco to take on water. At the second stop we had morning tea on the way out and lunch on the way back in. There is a cafe, museum and an area for passengers to try gold panning.

The terrain is spectacular. I know why, but I sure don't know how they constructed this railway line through this country.

The line has the first and second most steep sections of line in Australia. To navigate these ascents and descents, those stretches have a rack and pinion system. This was the first to be used in Australia.

Back to Queenstown about 2pm. Headed off straight away to see 'The Wall in the Wilderness' at Derwent Bridge which closes about 3.40pm…

Plan for today - visit Russell Falls and then head for Hobart. As we can't check in to our Hobart hotel till 3.00pm, we plan to have time to visit the Hobart Botanic Gardens beforehand.

Left early and hoped that Hamilton might have somewhere to get some breakfast. We weren't too optimistic - rightfully as it turned out.

The old, closed, falling down pub had something attached to it that was pretending to be a cafe. The coffee was OK, but the only food we were game to try were muffins…

Heading for Russell Falls, Trish and Paul’s' GPS took them by a longer route and as we neared the falls, our GPS tried to take us the wrong way. Luckily, we could see road signs so were OK.

Russell Falls are only about a 15 minute each way walk from the visitor centre. There are other, longer walks as well.

The falls are as good as all the falls we've seen, and, like the others, with good paths and viewing platforms.

Nice cruise around the gardens with commentary. A stop at the Antarctic garden building allowed us to see plants that grow there and experience the cold and windy conditions they grow in. When we exited the building, the outside temperature didn't seem near as cold as when we went in.

  • Bruny Island.

    3 november 2022, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Today we had a ten hour tour to Bruny Island with Bruny Island Safaris. We met the bus at 7.00am opposite our hotel. More people were picked up at two further stops on the way. We were fifteen in total.

The ferry to the island operates from and to Kettering. We arrived with plenty of time to catch the 8.20am ferry. That gave us time to have a snack in the terminal cafe. There are two ferries operating simultaneously, one from each side with the crossing taking ten minutes.

First stop was at Truganini Lookout with a short walk on a walkway giving excellent photo opportunities.

Morning tea would be at Two Tree Bay. On route we picked up fresh oysters at Get Shucked Oysters and bread and cheese from Bruny Island Cheese. Once at Two Tree Bay, Rick, our guide prepared the morning tea and we had a look around.

Morning tea was two oysters each, two soft cheeses and one hard, cheddar type cheese made from raw milk, accompanied by sourdough baguette. Best morning tea ever!!!

A scenic drive through rainforest took us to Cape Bruny and its lighthouse. On the way we saw a white wallaby. These are unique to this area and are a white wallaby as distinct from an albino wallaby.

A tour of the lighthouse was included. It was quite a climb from the car park up to the lighthouse made a lot more difficult by the very strong wind.

Some people chose not to climb the spiral stairs inside the lighthouse. Small groups go up with guide, Matt. It wasn’t easy but was well worth the hundreds (?) of steps. Once at the top, Matt explained the old machinery and lens. There is a walkway around the outside at the top.

We were able to do one circumnavigation of the walkway. If we thought it was windy on the ground, we were about to find out what real wind is like. Matt said that this was about the strongest wind he would let people go outside in. It was wild! I felt like I was going to be blown over. We all made it round and back in the door.

Next was lunch at the Bruny Hotel. Earlier, menus had been passed around the bus so we could choose our preferences. On the way past the hotel on the way to the lighthouse, we stopped and Rick dropped our orders in. So, on return, our tables were reserved and meals ready quickly.

Trish had fish'n'chips, Paul and Janette had calamari and I had chowder - absolutely delicious!

As if we hadn't eaten enough, next stop was the Bruny Island Chocolate Co. for a fudge and crumble tasting. Would you believe we bought some?

But wait, there's more - next stop - Bruny Island Honey and a tasting. Would you believe we bought some honey too?

Still more - another stop at Bruny Island Cheese Co - this time to browse and buy. We bought a wedge of the hard cheese made from raw milk that we had tasted earlier. As Rick had explained at morning tea, these are expensive cheeses - the soft cheeses are about $100 / kg and the hard cheddar type about $120 / kg.

Time to join the queue for the ferry and head back to Hobart.

Arrived back at the hotel about 5.30pm.

    What a great day!

    4 november 2022, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Pick up for today's guided tour to Port Arthur was 8.00am at our hotel. There are eight of us today.

First stop was Eaglehawk Neck - a narrow strip of land just before Port Arthur. This neck made security a lot easier as this was the only potential overland escape route.

On arrival at Port Arthur our guide, Huw, picked up our tickets for a guided tour at 10.30 and boat trip around the Isle of the Dead at 12.20.

Ron was our guide. He was very knowledgable and gave us a really good insight into 'life' at Port Arthur.

The Isle of the Dead, as the name implies, was Port Arthur's burial ground. The lower part of the island was for convicts while the higher ground was for non-convicts.

After the trip around the isle, we had time to have some lunch before being back on the bus at 2.00pm.

On the way back to Hobart, we detoured a little to look at the picturesque and historic town of Richmond. This little town is probably most famous for its old stone bridge. It is Australia's oldest, still in use bridge.

Needed to be in the theatre at the hotel by 10.00am as Paul's chorus was to compete around 10.30. So, Trish, Janette and I headed off to Salamanca Market early with the intention of having a bite to eat and a coffee, which we did.

The Salamanca Market, held every Saturday, is Tassie's number one tourist attraction and the biggest market in Australia - over 300 stalls - mostly with good quality merchandise. Unbelievably, Trish bumped into her sister-in-law, Bev as we were browsing.

There was a tourist information near the market, so we purchased tickets for the hop on / hop off bus.

Returned to the hotel in plenty of time to see several groups compete and then we saw Paul's group, Hills Harmony, perform, which we all really enjoyed.

Next it was up to the tourist information to catch the 12 noon bus. We toured Hobart on the top deck for an hour and a half. From the bus we walked into the edge of the city, found an asian restaurant and had lunch.

Janette went back to the hotel to do some washing. I walked to Franklin Wharf to book a couple of restaurants - a Chinese for tonight and Mures seafood for Monday night.

    5 november 2022, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

The Grand Chancellor Hotel is situated at Franklin Wharf, Hobart. The outlook from our room is over the wharf.

This was the port when Hobart was being established.

As well as numerous restaurants, there are interesting bronze sculptures

“Seals and Penguins is a bronze sculpture by Stephen Walker along Franklin Wharf. It is part of an ensemble called Heading South. These waterfront artworks memorialize Hobart’s role as the launching point for several 19th century Antarctic expeditions. The first maritime explorer was James Clark Ross, a captain of the Royal Navy. His two ships – the HMS Terror and HMS Erebus – set sail from this point to the Antarctic in 1840.”

Another work highlights the number of women and children transported to Australia. Names, ages, crime and sentence imposed are on the base.

Yet another tells of the children who went to the Orphan School in New Town, 1834 - 1853, and lists their names and ages.

The old wharf warehouse buildings are now galleries and restaurants.

Had an early dinner in a chinese restaurant at the wharf and then headed back to the hotel for tonight's concert. Over the last few days, competitions have been held for quartets and choruses. The winners all get to perform at the concert.

It was very entertaining. I really only have one thing to say - “I wish I could sing!”

  • MONA #2

    7 november 2022, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We had heard many opinions of Mona and its collection - much of it negative.

Yes, some of it is “adults only” and would be confronting for some.

Consensus of opinion in our group of four was unanimously good. It does need to be seen to be explained - it is difficult to describe the collection.

I'm cheating. I'm using other peoples' words:-

“The MONA building is a work of art in itself. The gallery space is encased in a three-level subterranean "cave" cut into 240-million-year-old Triassic-era sandstone on the Derwent riverbank. A mind-warping spiral staircase winds down 17 metres to the bottom to recycled jarrah floorboards from an old woolshed, polished by years of lanolin contact. It is not just the art that is engulfing.
Bit.fall, by German artist Julius Popp, is a two-story pulsing waterfall of 128 computer-controlled nozzles that briefly drip a display of words streamed from real-time Google searches. "Abbott" appears briefly and tumbles to the ground with a splash like a discarded budgie smuggler. As do disaster, walk, cost, earned, course, hill, mission…
The installations are all over the place, literally and taxonomically. Antiquities such as a 1500-year-old Egyptian sarcophagus stand alongside modern art in an up-yours to the art establishment. And there are plenty of up-yours, or his, or hers, or its, to see.
Last year Lonely Planet named MONA the best modern art gallery in the world. Eye of the beholder stuff, of course. MONA is not for everyone, especially the squeamish, prudish, pious or morally or politically conservative. Or the snooty classicist. Shock value is more highly prized here than any actual mainstream art prize would be but MONA is a vibrant, eclectic phenomenon and a national treasure.”

    Wikipedia says:-

“The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is an art museum located within the Moorilla winery on the Berriedale peninsula in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It is the largest privately funded museum in the Southern Hemisphere.[2] MONA houses ancient, modern and contemporary art from the David Walsh collection. Noted for its central themes of sex and death, the museum has been described by Walsh as a "subversive adult Disneyland"
The artworks on display are in non-chronological order and without museum labels. Instead, visitors are given the option of using free headphones and an iPod-like device called the 'O', which has an in-built GPS that senses where its holder is located and displays information about artworks nearby. Users of the O can select different interpretations of any given piece: 'Summary' (a brief description of the work and its artist); 'Art Wank' (curator's notes); 'Gonzo' (Walsh's personal opinions and stories), 'Ideas' (quotes and talking points); and 'Media' (oftentimes interviews with artists). Walsh also commissioned Damian Cowell, frontman of satirical Melbourne band TISM, to write and record songs about certain works for the O device. They were released as a free album, Vs Art, with MONA's 2010 book Monanisms.
Michael Connor of the conservative literary and cultural magazine Quadrant said that "MONA is the art of the exhausted, of a decaying civilisation. Display lights and taste and stunning effects illuminate moral bankruptcy. What is highlighted melds perfectly with contemporary high fashion, design, architecture, cinema. It is expensive and tense decay."[19]
Richard Dorment, art critic for the UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph, said that Walsh "doesn't collect famous names; his indifference to fashion is one of the strengths of the collection. He likes art that is fun and grabs your attention, that packs a sting in the tail or a punch in the solar plexus."

NB -The O is now an app that is downloaded to mobile phones or iPads etc.

  • Hard to eclipse this birthday!

    8 november 2022, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Checked into our chalets in Swansea. They were right on the seafront with balconies overlooking the water.

We had heard of spiky bridge at spiky beach so went for the short drive to have a sticky. Set in the concrete on top of the walls are vertical stones - hence the name. Went over the road to look at spiky beach - a nice little sandy cove.

It's Paul's birthday today. We dined at the Saltshaker restaurant in Swansea. Food and service were excellent. Janette had quietly bought some birthday candles during the day so we could have the restaurant put one on Paul's dessert.

The restaurant was absolutely packed and flat out. Because of this, we decided to have wine and chocolates on our verandah. Once back we realised that we had the candle but no matches. Janette put the candle into a chocolate and presented it to the birthday boy. We suggested that, instead of blowing it out, he should try to light it.

As we drank our wine, dusk started to fall and the moon rose from above the hills across the water. It was then that we remembered there was going to be a lunar eclipse.

    What a bonus!
