      II. 3-Day-Hike in the Japanese Alps

      Wandertag 2: Von Mt. Chogatake zu Mt. Daitenso (2922 m)
      Ab um 4.30 Uhr morgens war heute in der Hütte Unruhe, da alle den Sonnenaufgang um 5.15 Uhr erleben wollten. Es war ein wirklich beeindruckender Morgen! Um 7.00 Uhr habe ich meine Wanderung über den Mt. Jonen zu Mt. Daitensu gestartet. Kurz bevor ich an der Hütte angekommen bin, habe ich sogar Affen gesehen - mitten in der Bergen. Insgesamt habe ich heute 12 km (1100 Höhenmeter nach oben, 900 Höhenmeter nach unten) gewandert, sodass ich am Ende dieses Tages sehr erschöpft bin. Das Abendessen hier auf der Hütte ist traditionelles, japanisches Essen, was ausgezeichnet schmeckt: Auf einem kleinen Teller-Tablett sind frisches Weißkraut, eingelegtes Gemüse und andere, für mich nicht definierbare Beilagen mit Fisch oder Fleisch angeordnet. Dazu gibt es kleine Schüsselchen mit Reis, Misosuppe, Tee, Tofu und Algensalat. Reis und Misosuppe kann man sich unbegrenzt nachholen und gehört fast zu jedem typisch japanischen Essen dazu.

      Hiking day 2: From Mt. Chogatake to Mt. Daitenso (2922 m)
      People were starting to get up in the hut this morning at 4:30 am to prepare seeing the sunrise at 5:15 am. It was a really impressive morning! At 7:00 am I started my hike over Mt. Jonen to Mt. Daitensu. Just before I arrived at the hut I saw monkeys - in the middle of the mountains! All in all, I hiked 12 km today (1100 vertical meters up, 900 vertical meters down), so that I am very exhausted now. In the hut I have traditional Japanese dinner which tastes very delicious: on a small tray, you can find arranged fresh white cabbage, pickled vegetables and other, for me indefinable side dishes with fish or meat. In addition, there are small bowls with rice, miso soup, tea, tofu and seaweed salad. Rice and miso soup can be caught up and are part of almost every typical Japanese meal.      Read more

      Day 45

      Today we left Nagoya to travel to Nagano, I am super excited for our time in Nagano as we have some really cool day trips planned! From Nagoya to Nagano there is a train that takes about 3 hours but it’s very scenic! Nagano borders the Japanese Alps so we went through lots of tunnels through the alps and ran alongside rivers with mountains dusted with snow so three hours actually went pretty quickly!

      Arriving in Nagano we dropped our bags off and caught the train to Obasute which is only about 20kms outside of Nagano city but it’s like stepping into a completely different era. Nagano city is quite buzzy and it has lots of trendy bars and eateries but just outside the city it’s a completely different story.

      As we arrived and got off the train it felt like we had gotten off at a ghost station with just the two of us there we were wondering if we were at the right place! Wondering down through the hilly outcrop we were surrounded by beautiful views of the mountains and Nagano city in the background but most importantly - rice paddies! Terraced down the hill the rice paddies stretched for a few hundred metres alongside cherry blossom farmland and grape crops amongst others that we couldn’t identify! Small houses made of wood and thatched roofs lined the mountainside it was incredibly picturesque!

      As we were enjoying the scenery we saw a few farmers out working on the land and one in the smallest tractor we had ever seen it must have taken him a millennia to complete all his fields! Another with a small machine that appeared to be prepping the ground for planting. The rice paddies are quite marshy and as a result the farmers have built irrigation systems that have small channels of water that run on the sides of the fields to keep the fields boggy. As we went for a closer look I was rather startled when a frog jumped out of no where! Then all of a sudden there were about 10 of them all hopping around the rice field! I guess it actually makes perfect sense for them to be here as it’s nice and damp and cool with lots of choice for bugs but I just hadn’t really thought about it so I was very surprised when we started spotting them!

      Meandering through the farmland enjoying the warmth of the sun we eventually headed back to the train station - up a bloody huge hill to travel back to Nagano city to settle in for the night!

      Day 46

      Today we visited the largest Wasabi farm in Japan- Daio wasabi farm, it’s so large that it produces 150 tons of wasabi a year- I can’t even get my head around that large of a number!

      Despite the farm being in Nagano prefecture it is huge so it took us about three hours to get there which comprised of two trains and then a 45 minute walk.

      Greeted by a wasabi ice cream truck we felt like we had to try it! It was actually surprisingly nice apart from the fresh wasabi paste on top which burned my mouth off so I quickly scraped this off and enjoyed the rest of the ice cream!

      Wondering around the wasabi fields was quite the sight! Wasabi effectively grows in a steam and what’s special about this wasabi farm is that all the water that passes through the farm is spring water from the Japanese alps that flows tactically through the farm! It’s very impressive!

      Vast fields with little green plants dotting the landscape it was quite the operation! Reaching the best view point we had a nice view of the farm with the alps in the background, sitting down and enjoying the view we watched a few of the farmers out in the field picking the wasabi and working on the farm. A lot of the wasabi is covered in a black netting that is to protect them from the sun as wasabi is apparently very sensitive to direct sunlight once it’s developed past a certain stage!

      After taking it all in we wondered through the shop and saw some wasabi wine which we felt like we HAD to try, once we got back we tried this and it was actually very interesting. It was just very weak wine with a really subtle taste of wasabi, I don’t think it would become my regular drink but it’s always good to try new things!      Read more

      Tag 6: Matsumoto Castle und Onsen

      Berühmt ist Matsomoto für seine Burg von der ausser dem Tutm nicht mehr viel ünrig ist. Der schwarze Turm ist aber der Hammer. Wir bekamen von einer betagten Voluntärin eine gratis-Führung in Englisch. Nice.
      In Matsomoto gibt es auch eine Reihe heißer Quellen, die als Onsen genutzt werden können. Da sind wir mit dem Bus hin, was spaßig war, da wir alles falsch gemacht haben (man zieht eine Nummer beim Einsteigen und zahlt erst beim Aussteigen). Der Onsen war sehr traditionell, brutal hiess aber sehr entspannend. Das Bier danach war auch super.
      Zurück in der Stadt haben wir uns eine prima Kneipe zum Abendessen gesucht. Dort gab es auch unseren ersten Sake. Oishi !!      Read more

      🇨🇭: Mit Öv hemmers fängs voll imgriff isch recht easy. Nach öbbe 3h Zug fahre sind mir ide Stadt Matsumoto acho. Sind denn erstmol is Hotel. Sind quasi nur übernacht do, aber sind denn nochane no chli Stadt geahluege. Und immer wieder findet meh echt sehr schöni Shrines😍 chasch mir sege was wilsch aber de Baustil isch eifach wunderschön⛩️ i gang sehr gern so shrine geshluege, het au was beruhigendes. Zudem findi kultur do halt mega spannend!!🎎
      Han au mini spöteri Hochzitslocation gfunde, Matsumoto Castle😂 isch es ned Traumhaftschön?🏯
      Noch üsem usgehdente spaziergang hemmer denn no es resti gsurcht. Da isch denn ehn kampf gsi i dere mini Stadt. Hend denn gfühlt nach 30min surche eis gfunde. Echt sehr geil gsi. Hend nur im rege derfe zrugg laufe….

      🇺🇸: with public transportation we already have it under control, its really easy. After a 3h drove with the train we arrived the small town Matsumoto. We just stay one night here, so we are went first to the hotel. Bring our stuff in the room and going out to see the city. And everywhere you can find amazing shrines like this😍 you can told me everything what you want but this architecture is gorgeous!⛩️ i really like to visit shrines, it also have something soothing. Also i really like the cultur its so interesting🎎
      Btw i also found my future wedding location: Matsumoto castle 😂 isn‘t it beautiful?🏯
      After our long walk we decided to search a restaurant for dinner. Wasn‘t easy in this small town. After 30min searching we finally found one and it was delicous. But on the way back i begans to rain…. Wasn‘t that cool      Read more

      Japanese Alps (Matsumoto) & Nikko

      Final stop in the Japanese Alps is Matsumotooo. Famous for its oldest wooden castle, lattice walled storehouses and for hikers a gateway to the many beautiful walks in the surrounding mountains. A huge doubt whether to visit again stunning Kamikochi but a 1,5 hours travel one way and a 4-hour hike seemed a bit too much for the kids.

      Nikko is our last stop before ending our J-Trip in Tokyo. Again many shrines and temples surrounded by high cedar trees all set in a forest. We stayed in one of the few rooms of a beautiful, remote summer house where retired owner Hiro lives and likes to be accompanied by travellers. A day trip to lake Chuzen-ji was worth it with beautiful vistas along the steep mountain road with many hairpin curves, on the surrounding area, the Kegan waterfall and the lake itself.

      Bären und Burgen

      Der Tag startete, sehr zu Roberts Freude, mit der Wanderung auf dem Nakasendo. Der schöne Pfad hat uns durch das Örtchen Tsumago geführt, das ebenso beschaulich wie Magome ist.
      Die Bärenglocke haben wir zwar nicht geläutet, aber leider trotzdem keinen Bären gesehen.

      Auf den Weg zu Bahnhof trafen wir noch ein Geschwisterpärchen aus Dänemark, die einen 10 -Tage- Spontantrip machen. Da sie Richtung Kyoto und Hiroshima unterwegs waren, haben wir ihnen ein paar Empfehlungen mitgegeben.

      Als wir dann an unserem Tagesziel Matsumoto angekommen sind, haben wir uns, nach dem Sachen ablegen, direkt auf den Weg zur Burg gemacht. Ähnlich wie in Himeji ist auch diese sehr gut erhalten, jedoch fast komplett schwarz. Gefällt mir persönlich besser 😄

      Abendessen gab's diesmal in einem Yakiniku-Restaurant.
      Wir haben beim Grillen zwar die ganze Bude zugequalmt, aber es hat uns geschmeckt. Sei wohl auch normal bei unserer Fleischauswahl, sagte man uns auf Nachfrage.      Read more

      Matsumoto

      After a stop over in Niigata to watch a second Zutomayo concert I made my way to Matsumoto.

      The main draw of this city is its castle, one of the oldest surviving Japanese castles. Exploring the interior of the castle had many museum pieces, mainly focusing on the period where guns were first introduced into Japanese warfare. The steps into each floor got progressively more steep, I wouldn't want to be a samurai having to climb this castle.

      Painted black it looks very striking, even more so at night!

      Von Osaka nach Matsumoto

      Gestern war mal wieder ein Reisetag. Erst mit dem Zug nach Matsumoto und weil wir auf halber Strecke bemerkt haben dass unsere Unterkunft doch eher mäßig gut angebunden ist oder besser gesagt am A.... Der Welt liegt haben wir spontan beschlossen nochmal ein Auto zu mieten. Dem dem für japanische Verhältnisse sehr großen Auto kamen wir dann aber noch super in unserer Unterkunft an, konnten noch Lebensmittel einkaufen (der nächste Supermarkt ist hier 50 Minuten entfernt) und haben die schöne Burg von Matsumoto angeschaut 😍
      Unsere Ferienwohnung hier in den japanischen Alpen ist wunderschön und riesig! Und hier im Haus gibt es sogar eine kleine Kletterwand, vielleicht gehe ich mal noch ne Runde bouldern 😉      Read more

      Wandertag 1: Von Kamikochi zu Mt. Chogatake (2677 m)
      Obwohl ich eigentlich vorhatte, nur einen Tag in den Japanischen Alpen wandern zu gehen, habe ich mich gestern im Bus von Tokyo nach Matsumoto spontan dazu entschieden, den einzigartigen 3-tägigen Ginza-Trail durch den Chubusangaku Nationalpark zu laufen. Es war eine schwierige Entscheidung, da mir eine so anspruchsvolle Wanderung allein etwas riskant schien... aber dann wollte ich mir diese einmalige Gelegenheit nicht entgehen lassen und habe die zwei kostspieligen Übernachtungen in den Berghütten noch buchen können. Nun sitze ich auf dem Mt. Chogatake und genieße eine unbeschreibliche und wunderschöne Aussicht. Ich bin sehr erschöpft, da ich heute schon um 4.30 Uhr aufstehen musste, um den ersten Bus von meinem Hostel in Matsumoto nach Kamikochi zu bekommen. Um 7.30 Uhr in Kamikochi angekommen startete mein steiler Aufstieg zur Chogatake Mountain Hut. Da mein Rucksack wegen des mitgebrachten Essens und Wassers sehr schwer war und ich leider etwas Knieprobleme habe, musste ich sehr langsam bergauf wandern. Die 13 km umfassten 1200 Höhenmeter, sodass ich mit Pausen etwa 6 Stunden unterwegs war. Ein Glück konnte eine Person des Hüttenpersonals etwas Englisch, sodass ich mich anmelden konnte - ich habe mich sehr gefreut, hier oben ausschließlich Japaner*innen zu sehen. Allerdings kann ich mich mit ihnen kaum verständigen, da mein Japanisch etwa 5 Worte umfasst, deren Englisch sehr schlecht ist, und ich auch keinen Empfang für Übersetzungen habe... Die Hütte finde ich sehr gemütlich, da alles mit Holz verkleidet ist und die meisten Räume mit Tatami-Matten belegt sind. Die Aussicht von meinem Bett aus ist mal wieder einzigartig 🥰

      Hiking day 1: From Kamikochi to Mt. Chogatake (2677 m)
      Although I was actually planning to go hiking in the Japanese Alps for only one day, I spontaneously decided to hike the popular 3-day Ginza Trail through Chubusangaku National Park. It was a difficult decision as doing such a challenging hike alone seemed a bit risky to me.... but then I didn't want to miss this unique opportunity. I booked the two expensive nights in the mountain huts in advance and was lucky that they still had beds left one day before arriving. Now I am sitting on Mt. Chogatake and enjoying an incredibly awesome view. I am very exhausted because I had to get up at 4:30 am this morning to catch the first bus from my hostel in Matsumoto to Kamikochi. Arriving in Kamikochi at 7:30 am, I started the steep hike up to Chogatake Mountain Hut. Since my backpack was very heavy because of the food and water I brought with me, and I unfortunately still have knee problems, I had to hike very slowly up the mountain. The 13 km included 1200 hight meters so that it took me around 6 hours all in all with breaks. Fortunately one person of the hut staff talked some English so that I could check-in - I was very happy to see only Japanese people up here. It seems that I am the only foreigner. However, I can hardly communicate with them as my Japanese includes 5 words, their English is very poor, and I also have no reception for translations... The hut is very cozy because everything is covered with wood and tatami mats on the floor. The view from my bed is once again amazing 🥰      Read more

      III. 3-Day-Hike in the Japanese Alps

      Wandertag 3: Von Mt. Daitenso zu Mt. Tsubakuro & Nakabusa Onsen
      Heute morgen wurde in der Hütte sogar schon um 4.15 Uhr das Licht angemacht, da es üblicherweise schon vor dem Sonnenaufgang Frühstück gibt. Daher bin ich nach dem Sonnenaufgang um 5.30 Uhr schon losgewandert. Danach bin ich eine Weile auf dem Grat entlanggewandert und konnte nochmals die wunderschönen Aussichten genießen, bevor ich den Mt. Tsubakuro bestiegen habe. Anschließend ging es auf zum Abstieg, sodass ich heute etwa 11 km mit 1800 Höhenmetern abwärts gewandert bin. Da ich so früh losgewandert bin, hatte ich genügend Zeit, um mit Bus und Zug wieder zurück nach Matsumoto zu fahren, mich dort im Hostel zu duschen und meine Sachen zu packen, um anschließend zu meinem nächsten Ziel, Kanazawa, aufzubrechen. Daher werde ich heute auch zum ersten Mal mit dem Shinkansen fahren. Ein sehr straffes Tagesprogramm!
      Wenn ich ehrlich bin, war diese 3-tägige Wanderung auf dem Ginza-Trail neben dem Tauchen in Thailand mein bisheriges Highlight der Asienreise. Also falls ihr mal nach Japan kommen solltet, dann kann ich diese Wanderung sehr wärmstens empfehlen - sonst verpasst ihr was! :)

      Hiking Day 3: From Mt. Daitenso to Mt. Tsubakuro & Nakabusa Onsen
      This morning, the light in our hut was turned on already at 4:15 am because breakfast is usually before sunrise. Therefore, I already started hiking after the sunrise at 5:30 am. I hiked along the ridge for a while and could enjoy the beautiful views again before I climbed Mt. Tsubakuro. Afterwards, I started the descent so that I hiked about 11 km with 1800 vertical meters downhill today. Since I started hiking so early I had enough time to take the bus and train back to Matsumoto, take a shower at the hostel and pack my things, then head off to my next destination, Kanazawa. Today I will also ride the Shinkansen for the first time. A very tight schedule!
      If I'm honest this 3-day hike on the Ginza Trail was my highlight of the Asia trip so far, next to scuba diving in Thailand. So if you ever come to Japan, I highly recommend this hike - otherwise you're missing out! :)      Read more
