      Awoken early by James getting ready to leave for his journey to Taipei before returning to NZ.
      I had a good breakfast whilst the laundry was being done.
      Yuka took me to the Central Station, which was nearby her home, to authorise my 7-day JR Pass which had been supplied by Inside Japan, and to reserve seats on two trains in the coming weeks when I was travelling on my own.
      I took the metro to Osaka Castle and Park. After a light lunch, I joined the queue to into the Castle's Main Tower. There was a good view of Osaka from the 8th floor but the Tower had been heavily reconstructed internally with museums on each floor. It wasn't as authentic as the other castles visited.       In the evening, I went with Lai, Tracey and Jason to the Botanical Gardens to see the Team Lab illumination of the Gardens with changing multi-coloured lights amongst the trees and plants plus some standalone installations, all complemented with background music. It was very beautiful.
      We took a taxi back to the hotel, and Tracey, Jason and myself went to a restaurant in a street off the covered arcade to cook meat and vegetables over a grill for dinner.
      I checked into a single room at the hotel now that James had left and the Intrepid trip ended.
      Inside Japan had provided me with an IC Pass to use on the metro. I also used this later on in Tokyo, topping it up when necessary like an Oyster Card in London.       Czytaj więcej

      I walked the route from the hotel to Nauda Station so I knew where to go the following morning.
      Afterwards, I followed the route on two walks outlined in the Lonely Planet guide for Japan. The first was around Dotonbori which was full of tourists, eateries and shops except for a small shrine tucked-away in an alleyway. The second was around Amerika-Mura which had lots of clothing shops and boutiques.
      In the afternoon, I took the metro to the Harukas 300 Observation Deck which had a great 360 degree view of Osaka. I found some postcards to buy after fruitless searches elsewhere., and then met Tracey and Jason. We had a good meal at one of the many restaurants in the tower-block, and then said goodbye. They were going on an Intrepid Food Tour in South Korea before returning to the USA.
      Generally, the drinks at dinner were draft or bottled beer; lemon (or another fruit) sour which is shochu, lemon juice and soda water; whiskey soda, and whiskey highball which is whiskey with ginger ale.
      I used my Kansai 2-Day Pass, which had been supplied by Inside Japan, on the metro today.       Czytaj więcej

      Großartiger Tag in Osaka. Früh aufgestanden, um rechtzeitig bei Yucco zum Kochkurs zu sein. Gemeinsam wurde ein traditionelles japanisches Menu gezaubert. Super spannend und sau lecker!
      Anschließend (der Tag war schließlich noch jung) ging es ins America-Mura Viertel, wo junge, hippe Japaner in Klamotten rumrennen, von denen sie glauben, dass sie irgendwann mal in den USA in waren. Abgefahren!
      Danach ging es zum Schloss mit einem rundum Blick über die ganze Stadt. Und mit dem Shinkansen dauern die 50 Km Rückweg nach Kyōto dann auch nur 12 Minuten...perfekt!       Czytaj więcej

      Osaka castle

      Was first built in 1580s, but was destroyed within a few years. Rebuilt in 1620s, then got struck by lightning and burned down in 1665. Finally, it was restored in 1931. It's a wonder it's one of the major symbols of Japan.

      Osaka Castle

      We were pleased that the "koyo" (autumn leaves) were approaching their peak around Osaka Castle. The moat was lined with russet and orange coloured trees. As we walked towards the castle we noticed this little vehicle that played a distinctive tune that, once heard, was difficult to get out of your head. This vehicle carried people, interested to be off their feet, to and from the Castle grounds.

      We took plenty of photos of the Osaka Castle. When we were satisfied with our 'groupfie,' my sister and I entered the Osaka History Museum and learned about Hideyoshi Toyotomi. He was the founder of the Osaka Castle, and he almost united the nation at some stage. Dad declined to join us as he had previously seen it on a business trip 20 years ago and Mom opted to stay with him.

      We saw some interesting miniature dioramas that featured slices of Hideyoshi Toyotomi's life. To my amazement, the dioramas featured moving holograms of people within them which made the scenes lifelike. There was a spectacular vantage point at the top of the castle with sweeping panoramic views of Osaka - a cornucopia of autumn hues.

      We reconvened with Mom and Dad and strolled for a few more pictures, including some romantic couple shots to fan the flames of their passion, for each other and for life.       Czytaj więcej

      Osaka Castle

      Met up with our group in the lobby - quite a large group of nearly 40 people (probably too large but we shall see) First stop was Osaka Castle built in the 16th century set amongst attractive gardens. Well, it was first built in the 16th Century but damaged when lightning struck stored gunpowder. Centuries of neglect and the run-down castle was eventually destroyed during WW2 when the US bombed arsenal holdings. It has since been rebuilt as an exact copy - only completed about 25 years ago - and serves as a museum.

      We then continued to the shopping district known as Dōtonbori famous for its street food and shopping plus a famous neon sign of Glico running man. Not sure what the attraction of this sign was but it was interesting to explore some of the unusual shops in the area and we tried some the local dishes such as yukisoba (a fried noodle dish) and okonomiyaki (a savoury pancake). Both excellent choices!

      We spent far too long at this free time stop (almost 4 hours) in my opinion as we still had to drive to Kyoto for more activities - but I'll cover Kyoto in the next post.       Czytaj więcej

      Osaka Castle 🏯

      Buongiorno Osaka! Oggi finalmente usciamo dalla nostra guest house senza l’ombrello! Il tempo è ancora nuvoloso ma l’assenza di pioggia ci permette di fare colazione all’esterno del seven eleven.
      Impegniamo le energie guadagnate dal pasto in una camminata di circa un’oretta che ci porta al famoso castello della città, grande circa il triplo di quello di Inuyama.
      La bellissima e ben tenuta costruzione ospita all’interno otto piani di museo che non possiamo esimerci dal visitare.       Czytaj więcej

      Wie so oft haben wir unseren Tag mit Combini-Frühstück, hier das köstlich fettige ‚Famichicki’ von Family Mart, gestartet.

      Dann stand Osaka Castle und dessen Umgebung mit Pflaumenhain und einen kleinen Foodcourt auf dem Programm. Marvin und ich haben uns dann von der Gruppe gelöst und sind abgetaucht in Osakas Shopping-Paradies. Alles wovon ich als Teenager geträumt habe gibt es hier… und noch viel mehr.
      Auf dem Bild zu sehen der Nike Air Yeezy 2 für ca. 4700€.

      Ein Muss in Osaka ist Dotonbori: Grell, laut und lecker.
      Eine Portion Takoyaki darf hier natürlich nicht fehlen. Danach haben wir uns gemeinsam in der ‚Space Station’ verabredet. Eine kleine Bar mit vielen Retro-Konsolen und ausgelassener Stimmung. Der Boy aus England hat euphorisch bei unserem Tennis-Match mitgefiebert.

      Für mich war es der letzte Abend in Osaka. Am nächsten Morgen heisst es vorerst Abschied nehmen. Ich gehe alleine weiter!       Czytaj więcej

      Welcome in Osaka

      Nachdem anstrengenden und langen Reisetag sind wir heut morgen etwas gerädert aufgestanden und haben uns direkt auf zum Osaka Castle gemacht. Der Weg dorthin war allerdings etwas verwirrend da das Bahnnetz hier sehr verwirrend. Hunderte verschiedene Linien, dazu unterschiedliche Bahnbetreiber sodass man auch nicht einfach ein Tagesticket kaufen kann. Das Osaka Castle ist der Nachbau einer damaligen Festung in seiner traditionellen Architektur und mit seinen riesigen Wassergräben. Innen ist ein Museum welches die Geschichte der Festung und der Vereinigung der japanischen Clans unter Toyotomi Hideyoshi erzählt. In der achten Etage ist eine eindrucksvolle Aussichtsplattform von der man einen Rundumblick auf die Skyline von Osaka hat. Anschließend ging es für uns noch in die umliegende Park- und Gartenanlage und zu einem der der bekanntesten Schreine in Osaka. Nach einer kurzen Bahnfahrt waren wir auch schon am Namba Yasaka Schrein und bestaunten den riesigen Löwenkopf der den Schrein darstellt. Hier konnten wir auch die verschiedensten Gebetsrituske beobachten und einiges über die spirituelle Seite der Japaner mit ihrer Religion dem Buddhismus & dem Shintō beobachteten und lernen. Anschließend ging es für uns in in die wohl bekannteste Einkaufsstraße Osaka's, die Dotonbori. Auf der bunten und quirligen Straße kann man so gut wie alles kaufen. Von teueren Luxusartikel über Kosmetik bis hin zu billiger Kleidung. Um den Kanal und die bekannte Ebisu Bashir Brücke tummeln sich dutzende Restaurants und Streetfoodstände, wo wir auch das ein oder andere probiert haben. Abends ging es für uns wieder zurück in das Viertel unserer Unterkunft, da Laura unter dem vielen fettigen Essen nicht fündig geworden ist. Also gab es abends noch eine Portion Spaghetti Bolognese für Laura und wir haben in dem italienischen Restaurant den Abend gemütlich ausklingen lassen. Spannend war vor allem zu sehen dass die Japaner selbst Pizza mit Stäbchen essen. Czytaj więcej
