      Schatzhaus oder "Khazne" von Petra

      Der erste Blick auf das Schatzhaus nach der Wanderung durch die Schlucht ist unvergesslich! Es ist das bekannteste und schönste Monument von Petra. Die Fassade wurde mit unglaublicher Präzision und künstlerischen Talent in den Felsen gehauen, das warme Sonnenlicht untermalt die Schönheit. Mehrere architektonische Stile wurden vereint: die Hauptkonstruktion ist im griechisch-römischen Stil gehalten mit dekorativen Elementen aus Ägypten.

      Wie entstand der Name "Schatzhaus"? Darüber gibt es verschiedene Theorien. Eine besagt, dass die Beduinen, die dort lebten, dachten, dass ein Gefäß im Inneren des Tempels Gold enthalten würde, also einen sehr großen Schatz.
      Letztendlich war es wohl ein Grab / Schrein zu Ehren von Aritas V., welches zur wohlhabensten Zeit Petras entstanden war.      Read more

      Nous passons deux journées à Petra, ce qui est tout juste ce qu'il faut pour pouvoir appréhender ce site extraordinaire. Le premier jour, nous nous levons tôt pour pour pouvoir éviter la foule dans le Siq et profiter des vues sur le Khazneh, caché dans la roche. Nous arrivons ensuite aux tombeaux royaux, puis montons jusqu'au monastère. Une sacrée grimpe, mais qui en vaut la peine. Le lendemain, nous revenons pour entamer une deuxième grimpette, vers le lieu des sacrifices. Ensuite on prolonge un peu le plaisir avec la visite de la Petite Pétra, plus tranquille mais moins spectaculaire, et les ruines d'un village du néolithique.Read more

      En ce deuxième jour à Pétra, nous prenons la direction du Monastère qui est le point le plus excentré de la Cité. Nous passons par le Siq, la Rue des Façades et la Voie à Colonnades, axe marquant le centre de Pétra et construit vers l'an 106 en suivant le plan romain classique d'un decumanus (axe Est-Ouest). Celle-ci débouche sur la grande porte de Temenos érigé au II ème siècle et marquant l'entrée du centre de la Cité.
      C'est en haut de plus de 800 marches taillées dans la falaise (ancienne voie processionnelle) que le Monastère apparaît. L'édifice, majestueux mesure 50 mètres de largeur et 45 mètres de hauteur. Il a été construit au III ème siècle av J-C, peut être a des fins funéraires. En rebroussant chemin nous assistons au coucher de soleil offrant ses plus belles couleurs sur les façades des tombes Royales.      Read more

      Petra entdecken (1)

      Oft von gehört, hunderte Bilder gesehen. Doch Petra übertrifft alle meine Erwartungen und bisherigen antiken Stätten. Es kommt direkt hinter Lalibela in Äthiopien, wo die Felsenkirchen aber heutzutage noch genutzt werden.

      Was macht die Faszination aus? Es ist die Weitläufigkeit des Areals, die Anschaulichkeit trotz vieler Erdbeben, die Besonderheit der Lage und Bauweise. Vieles liegt noch verschüttet und noch mehr Zeugnisse könnten wohl zum Vorschein kommen. Die Nabatäer wussten, warum sie ihre Kultstätten in den Fels gebaut hatten und gleichzeitig so gut versteckt hielten.

      Fasziniert bin ich auch von den Gegensätzen. Petra zur Mittagszeit ist voller Händler und Touristen, was die Stadt wieder lebendig macht und die Vorstellungskraft für bis zu 30.000 Einwohner stärkt. Dann der absolute Kontrast am nächsten Morgen um 6.30 Uhr. Vielleicht befinden sich 100 Menschen in der Anlage. Der langsame Sonnenaufgang, die Morgenkühle und Stille schärfen die Sinne und man fühlt sich klein und auf eine andere Art völlig überwältigt.      Read more

      We arrived in Petra at about 11.30am and went straight to our hotel 🏨 - La Maison - just a 3-minute walk🚶‍♂️from the entrance to the archaeological site. Luckily, our rooms were ready so we were able to have a quick shower before having our guided walk around Petra with Sofyan.

      Mark visited Petra once before - on a day trip from Israel 🇮🇱 in the early nineties. He said the town and the entrance to the site were both unrecognisable from those days!

      We bought our two-day tickets and Sofyan showed us on a large plan of the site what our options were for exploring on our free day tomorrow. We began our visit by walking the 800 metre downhill path through an area called Bab as-Siq (gateway to the Siq).

      Petra is a vast concealed city built by the Nabateans (Arabs who dominated the region in pre-Roman times). These desert tribes chose to make Petra their capital. They carved the buildings into the towering rock walls of multi-coloured sandstone and made them impenetrable by cutting a 1.2 km path (siq) through the rock. This was the only way in or out of the city, meaning that enemies had no chance of attacking unnoticed.

      The most iconic of all the buildings in Petra is obviously the Treasury. It's the first building you see as you emerge from the siq. It is instantly recognisable from movies 🎬 like Indiana Jones. However, there are 800 registered sites in Petra including 500 tombs! I had not appreciated the sheer magnitude of the place! It is completely overwhelming at first. I'm glad that we had a guided tour on the first day, and that we had the opportunity to go back on the second and explore some more at our own pace.

      I shall break down our time in Petra into several footprints 👣. We took hundreds of photos 📸 so I will try to pick the best!

      Driving from Petra to Kerak

      We set off from our hotel 🏨 in Petra at 8am for the drive to Kerak. We had a couple of stops en route at viewpoints. The first was just outside Petra. It was fascinating to see the entrance to the site from above. We could see the pathway down to the Siq but then nothing else! The sandstone cliffs conceal everything! It really is a hidden city.

      We had driven south from Amman along the Desert Highway. We returned north on the King's Highway, a much slower but more scenic route. It was a vitally important trade route in the ancient Near East, connecting Africa with Mesopotamia. It ran from Egypt across the Sinai Peninsula to Aqaba, then turned northward across Transjordan, to Damascus and the Euphrates River.      Read more
