      Faszination aus rötlichem Stein, naturbelassen ebenso wie von Menschenhand in Form gebracht: Die Felsenstadt Petra ist schlichtweg atemberaubend.

       Zugegeben, ein klein wenig touristisch angehaucht ist das schon, mit Zilliarden von Mulis, Eseln, Kamelen und ihren (Ver)Führern, die auf der Frequenz "no, thanks" völlig taub sind.

      Am Ende dann, vor dem 1000-Stufen-Anstieg zum Kloster (den sich nur Teile der Karawanserei geben), wartet eine der echten Raritäten Jordaniens auf den ermatteten Wanderer: Cerveza! Kalt! Erquickend!      Read more

      Erster Eindruck von Petra.
      Zu Zeiten der Nabatäer die Haustadt ihres Reiches und zw dem 3. und 5.Jhd ein wichtiger Handelsplatz auf der Weihrauchstraße. Die Karawanenwege von Ägypten und Syrien mussten auf dem Weg zum Mittelmeer hier vorbei - Zwischenhändler und Zölle machten die Stadt reich. Zu ihrem Vorteil zählte die besondere Lage in der Schlucht und damit eine sehr geschützte Lage und außerdem haben sie es mit einem ausgeklügelten Wasserzysternensystem geschafft, eine fruchtbare Oase aufrecht zu erhalten.
      Im späten 5. Jhd wurde dann der Schiffsverkehr am Roten Meer gefördert und die Stadt verlor allmählich an Bedeutung.
      Im Mittelalter verließen dann die letzten Menschen die Stadt und erst 1812 wurde sie von Johann Ludwig Burckhart wieder entdeckt. Ab 1920 gab es dann archäologische Ausgrabungen, die bis heute ca 20% der damaligen Stadt ausgegraben haben.
      Die heute noch erhaltenen Monumente waren anscheinend Grabdenkmäler, von denen die Fasade direkt aus dem Felsen gemeißelt wurde.

      Das traurigste an dem Ort sind die vielen Pferde, Esel und Kamele, die den ganzen Tag herumstehen oder jemanden von A nach B tragen und dabei nicht sehr toll behandelt werden😪.      Read more

      Petra ist eine Siedlung der Nabatäer, wie Hegra in SA, nur viel imposanter. Nach einem Erdbeben 360 n. C. wurde sie verlassen und geriet in Vergessenheit.
      Heute bestaunen wir die Schatzkammer und erklimmen den High Place of Sacrifice.

      Petra!

      Flights stairs: 61 !!

      We went to Petra today. It’s quite a hike - surprised me, I had no idea it took so much to see it. And today, we only saw about half of the site.

      We made it to the “treasury” - to me, made famous by Indiana Jones and the last crusade. Anyone else? Shows how cultured I am. 😂 And then we took a side trail to be able to view the treasury from above - it was 725 stairs to the top! (yes I counted every one of them). Luckily we went out early so wasn’t too warm for most of it - mid 70’s at the start, mid 80’s at the end. The main trail to get in was about 2 miles each way and then the side trail we took was another 2 each way. All the hikes we’ve done so far are rated easy or moderate - todays was rated hard, and it was. But we made it to the top!

      When we got there we found a person had constructed a “hut” that completely blocked the view. You could only see said view if you came into the hut and purchased something to drink. Quite the entrepreneur. At that point we had little choice after hiking for 2 miles just to see the view so we paid out the $6 for two water bottles, sat down and enjoyed what we worked so hard to see. 😂

      So far, Jordan has been a joy to see. And for the most part the people are kind, polite and friendly. Today tho, was shocked when a man asked me “how many camels would you like for your baby?” Yep .. someone offered to buy my daughter. 😳 For camels, nonetheless. A waiter also asked Jordan, with me sitting right there, “does your mom like sweets? Most old ladies here don’t.” Yep .. I was called an old lady, to my face. 😢 Someone also wanted to know why Jordan wasn’t married yet - what was “wrong” with her to not be married by 23. Interesting times.      Read more

      Eins der neuen sieben Weltwunder

      Und das ist Petra wahrlich auch.....einfach nur Wahnsinn.
      Die Geschichte dieser Stadt, der Verfall und die Wiederentdeckung einfach nur spannend.
      ....und wenn man bedenkt, dass erst ca.20 % der Stadt ausgegraben wurde.
      Für uns war es wieder ein extrem toller Urlaubstag.      Read more

      Wir gönnen uns ein besonderes Erlebnis:
      Petra by Night

      Es geht um 20:00 Uhr bei Laternen Beleuchtung 2 km zu Fuß bis zum Schatzhaus, dem bekanntesten Gebäude von Petra.

      Zwischen den hohen Felswänden sieht man über sich die Sterne. Eine tolle Atmosphäre bei der spärlichen Beleuchtung hier entlang zu laufen.

      An dem Schatzhaus kann man auf Stühlen oder Teppichen sitzen. Zuerst gibt es nur Musik, dann wird das Grab beleuchtet. Ist schon riesig und wunderschön verziert. Sehr beeindruckend.      Read more

      Petra, Teil 1

      Heute wollen wir Petra besichtigen.

      Es gibt verschiedene Möglichkeiten. Die Schlucht in der die Gräber und Tempel sind ist 4 km lang, also 8 hin und zurück. Wenn man das Kloster besichtigen will kommen nochmal 900 Stufen dazu.

      Alternativ kann man sich zum Nord-Gate fahren lassen und dann hat man nur eine Strecke plus 1 km vom Gate zur Schlucht.

      Gestern hatten wir Carmen und Anton kennengelernt. Zusammen nehmen wir die Alternative. Petra erstreckt sich über ein unheimlich großes Gebiet. Auf der Hinfahrt haben wir einen tollen Blick auf die Schlucht.

      Schon auf dem Abstieg sieht man überall Höhlen, Gräber und tolle Felsmuster. Unten in der Schlucht kommen wir zuerst zur Säulenstrasse und dem großen Tempel. Er misst schätzungsweise 7000 qm und ist von den Römern gebaut.

      Petra, Teil 2

      March 17, 2023 in Jordan

      Gegenüber der Königsgräber liegt das Theater. Es bietet 4000 Besuchern Platz und ist das einzige Amphitheater, das vollständig aus Felsen gehauen wurde.

      An der Fassadenstrasse Reihen sich ein Tempel an den anderen. Die Krönung ist aber das Schatzhaus, an dem wir schon bei Petra by Night waren. Jetzt am Tag sieht man natürlich vielmehr Einzelheiten.

      Wir sind so glücklich, Petra erleben zu dürfen, es ist unbeschreiblich.

      Zurück geht es durch den Siq, eine hohe, schmale Schlucht mit in den Felsen gehauenen Wasserleitungen. Die Schlucht ist ungefähr 1 km lang bevor es dann zurück zum Wohnmobil geht.

      Das Kloster haben wir ausgelassen, das wäre für uns Zuviel gewesen. Aber auch so war es ein Traum der in Erfüllung gegangen ist.      Read more

      Day 44 - Petra!

      A short 5 minute bus journey down to Petra this morning. It was an early start (06:45) but worth it to avoid the crowds. We made it to the Treasury (the building in Indiana Jones) at around 8 o clock and then had plenty of time to see the rest of the city and the monastery at the top. All in we climbed 700m today in a total distance of around 8 miles. Quite a big walk! To top it off we did actually get our camel photos and ride today! Nb: Jane’s camel was very grumpy - didn’t want to stand up and then kept snapping at mine! An amazing day all round!
      (Lots of frankincense and myrrh for sale - never knew these were resins from certain types of trees. The stall owner in the photo was on Joanna Lumley's Silk Road and Travelman)      Read more

      Jordan and Israel – Day 4 (Petra)
       
      It’s been two days since my last post, but today I’m only going to touch on yesterday; I’ll catch-up on today, well, tomorrow.
       
      We arrived at the town of Petra on Friday night.  A number of us went out to a local bar/restaurant which had been built into a cave in the rock – that’s where that pic of me smoking a hookah is from.
       
      The majority of the next day – Saturday - was spent in Petra, the archaeological site.
       
      We gathered that morning for a short walk to enter the site.
       
      Thumbnail:  Petra dates back to the fourth century BC.  Built by the Nabataeans, who were masters of rainwater collection and management, stone carving, and agriculture, with Petra itself being a big trading site that made them pretty darn wealthy.  Rumor has it that the Three Wise Men purchased their gifts of frankincense, myrrh, and gold at Petra.  The place had buildings, temples, a monastery, burial chambers, and more.
       
      You enter it through this 1 ½ mile pathway through a stone canyon named The Siq – the video I posted yesterday showed the last few steps before entering the first plaza where “The Treasury” is revealed.  From there on, there’s a (huge) series of walking and hiking paths in a variety of directions.  Overall, we spent about 5-6 hours there, and I chose to take “the long walk” to the Monastery, which – I was told - had 1,000 steps to climb to it.  For the full visit, I had more than 18,000 steps and 79 “flights” of steps per my iPhone.
       
      Every turn revealed more eye candy, whether it be natural rock formations or what has been built into it.  The varying color of the rock is amazing, and the fact that it’s all lasted this long is amazing too.
       
      It was crowded with tourists, and industry has grown up around and inside it – donkey, camel, carriage, even golf cart rides; vendors selling all sorts of trinkets, and cafes where you can get soda, food, juice, ice cream.  But if you ignore all that (or make it part of the experience), it is just darn incredible.
       
      Like a lot of places in the world, photos and videos don’t do it justice.  One of the most moving places I’ve ever been.
       
      Go.  Just go.
