      Bike ride and Dead Sea

      18 de julio de 2017, Jordán ⋅ 🌙 31 °C

After breakfast in the hotel restaurant, Abed picked us up at 8am and headed to Mt Nebo, only a few minutes from Madaba.

Mt Nebo is, according to the Old Testament, where Moses saw the Promised Land before he died. On a clear day you can see Jericho and Jerusalem (that wasn't today), but we did see some more mosaics by early pilgrims which have been excavated and preserved.

We met our cycling guide, Anas, in the nearby town at 9am and began our journey toward the Dead Sea. He was a member of the Jordanian Road Cycling team for 9 years so we were in good hands. The ride was 55km, and wasn't as easy as we'd been expecting, with many hilly sections and a bit of off-roading between the farms. Fortunately, we had a support vehicle follow us the whole way, so Oliver took advantage of getting a lift for a few kilometres of the steepest section.

We arrived at Mukawir and went to a local family house for lunch. We had the traditional welcome coffee, followed by sweet black tea with fresh mint, then a delicious meal of chicken with rice and vegetables. Everthing we ate, except the rice, was grown by the family. This was regarded as a small family, with only 6 children - our host's brother has 24 children to 2 wives (Jordanian men can take up to 4 wives simultaneously, who each live in a separate house).

After lunch we drove to the Dead Sea coast via the Mujib Nature Reserve, a green area on the map, but no green to be seen in real life. It was like a lunar landscape, barely a tree or bush in sight, but with spectacular mountain views and a steep, windy descent to the Dead Sea, 400m below sea level.

All the "public" beaches are behind the hotels, so you have to pay to access them. Being so hot (it hit 43° later in the day), the hotel was fairly empty, save a few hardy souls swimming in the luke warm hotel pool. The beach was even more deserted, so we had our 10 minute float in the saline, oily waters, then caked a bit of (supposedly) therapeutic mud, before rinsing off in the warm outdoor shower and headed back to the air conditioned car quite hot and unrefreshed!

We had a 3 hour drive to Petra for the night, but we extended that by an hour to take the scenic route via the Dana Biosphere.

We arrived at Petra at 8pm, a quick shower to freshen up, and headed out for something to eat. It's a proper tourist town (the main street isn't called Tourism Street for nothing!), so everything is quite expensive, but we managed a shawarma (like yiros, but thinner bread and no salad), and a juice each for $40!

    • Day 90 - Dead Sea, Jordan

      7 de octubre de 2023, Jordán ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Today we woke up and had to have our bags and had breakfast by 7.20am to get on the road towards the Dead Sea area.

Our first stop along the way to the Dead Sea was to Karak Castle. Omar took us on the tour of the castle that was never taken by force and only surrendered by the Crusaders after being surrounded for two years with no one in or out. The Crusaders built this castle in the 12th Century.

We had an hour and a half hour drive to the Dead Sea area from Karak Castle, which we had a booking at the Medical Centre, a four star hotel resort that features pools, a water slide and access to the Dead Sea with the mud.

Once we arrived, we had lunch at the resort which consisted of a buffet meal. After lunch we got changed and headed straight down to the Dead Sea.
Floating in the water was a very weird sensation! When you tried to stand you would just bob in the water and not go down unless you pushed against the water. We also tried the mud that is meant to do wonders for your skin, Katie tried a small amount, of course I went all in!
After the Dead Sea we moved up to the resorts pool that had a water slide. We spent time with some of the group seeing who could go down the slide the fastest.

We went back to the bus ready to start making our way to our next hotel in Madaba. On the way we stopped at Mt. Nebo, Mount Nebo is mentioned in the Bible as the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land before his death. The landscape is home to stunning surroundings and one can look out at the Dead Sea, Bethlehem, and on a clear day, even Jerusalem (we could kind of make the outline of some buildings). The Memorial Church of Moses also rests at the summit that has intact mosaics from the original church on the floor and walls.

We ventured onto the hotel in Madaba, we checked in and headed out for some dinner locally. We had a walk through the Main Street and main shopping mall (McDonalds was the most interesting thing there!)
At 9pm I had booked a hair cut from a barber directly across the hotel for 3JED! This was going smooth until we talked about Turkey and how he off handily mentioned he had lived in Istanbul but in Jail… still working out if that was miss communicated english or serious!

      Floaters!

      10 de septiembre de 2023, Jordán ⋅ 🌙 31 °C

We were v excited to get our first glimpse of the dead sea & arrive at our luxury hotel. We immediately put on our oldest swimmies & headed down to the lowest point on earth (420m below sea level) for a float.

What a strange experience it's v hard to get your legs down, everything keeps bobbing up! It's an experience that's captured my imagination since childhood & floating with dead sea mud on my face as the sun went down over the hills of Israel was a happy contented moment. :)
