    Just Get Started

    January 3 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 45 °F

Went to the senior center this morning. I could barely manage 5 minutes on the stationary bike, then spent 20 minutes on the treadmill. And then I went to the Chair Exercise class. It was actually a little bit challenging and I did break a sweat. And then I sat in the lounge and worked on a puzzle for an hour or 2.

When I got home I prepared mushroom spinach lasagna.

So I feel I can veg in front of the TV and watch Grimm for a bit

  • Austin Here I Come

    January 4 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

Odin picked out this doggie bed for Artemis one day while we were shopping. It was on sale and I bought it even though I didn't think it was going to be useful. Well, she loves it! One afternoon she fell asleep in it. Yesterday she was carrying it around trying to figure out where to put it so she could watch Miss Rachel. Josh has started turning her favorite show on while he prepares dinner. It has only taken a few days and now she expects it as part of her evening routine.Read more

  • SP&R Overlook & Aquarium Outing

    January 9 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

Today I took the #50 bus to the Light Rail and then to the Light Rail to West Lake Station where I met up with a group of other like minded people to explore. Courtney led the group. We walked to & through Pike Place Market to the new Overlook Walkway. The walkway is a lovely winding path that goes over the busy road and then down to the warfs and the aquarium. We got into the aquarium for free with the Senior Gold Cards. It was a lovely outing with some friendly people. I'm looking forward to doing more group outings and using public transportation more.

On the way back to the Light Rail I stopped in an art gallery that we had passed on the way to Pike's. The carvings were incredible. Some of them were almost affordable.

  • Time to Move It

    January 14 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

I've decided it's time for some adventures. I'm flying to Austin on Thursday and hoping for a little bit warmer weather. Then I'll be back in Seattle for a couple of weeks. And then Puerto Viarta for a week. But then I need to hit the road! It's been way too long since I utilized my Van in the way I meant to when I purchased it. I want to travel in it for a couple of months and then when it warms up in the PNW I'll explore Washington and Oregon. So....that's my plan. Yay!!!Read more

  • Two Homes

    Jan 17–18 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

I feel like I have 2 homes. Even though I don't have a house in Austin it still feels like home. David's here, my friends are here, I know my way around, it's home. I live in Seattle now but it only partially feels like home.

Wendy picked me up at the airport and we went out for lunch. Then she dropped me at David's. Friday David had his sinus surgery. He was pretty miserable afterwards. But today; Saturday, he was feeling a lot better. I went over to Wendy's in the afternoon and met her grandbaby who is adorable. I should have taken a photo of her. Just like Artemis, she has a lot to say. She's very cute but a little shy around strangers.

Then tonight I went to the Saturday Contra Dance. I knew almost everyone there! The band was very good and the dancing wasn't bad. I'm so glad I went. But on the way home I started tearing up. I really miss this dance community (and the rest of my friends). I definitely want to go again on Wednesday.

  • I'm Here

    January 22 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 50 °F

"When you wake up, you notice that you're here."
Got this quote from a book I've been reading. I'm not sure why but I really like it. It speaks to me on some bizarre esoteric level.

It's been.quite a few days so far. While David is recovering from his surgery I managed to do something to my lower back. I could barely change positions the first day. David had to take care of me! He happened to have a cane from when his back was out and that has been a great help. And a really nice, extra-large heating pad. My back is much better today. I even managed to take a shower. I probably could have driven but I didn't need to. ......

Yesterday Jeannie had a stroke. Her daughter, Shani texted me. They got her to the hospital pretty quick & the arm & leg paralysis seems to have completely resolved. But she managed to break another 🦴. Wendy dropped me at the hospital today so I could visit Jeannie while she went to her ENT appt. Jeannie seems to be doing well and is in good spirits.

Then Wendy & I went to Torchy's for a late lunch & HEB for some shopping.

So it's been quite a few days! And I just have to say: "when I wake up, I notice I am Here!"

  • Fun & Games

    January 24 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

A wonderful day in Austin. Wendy and I went to see the Troll in Pease Park. It's as cool as all the others I've seen but unfortunately when you've already seen 4, the 5th one is not quite as awe inspiring (or shocking). I guess that's true for many things. After seeing shocking stuff over and over it's not as shocking. Will our democracy survive constant insults, will people become complacent, will the new Hitler destroy what is left of humanity and human decency? It is a very scary & ..... I can't think of a word to describe my fear.

    Okay. Enough of that

Wendy and I met with Arlie, Catherine and Shirley at Emerald Tavern Games & Cafe. We had such a good time. I'm usually not all that into games but playing with these ladies was great. First we played Anomia & then Code Names. Neither were strategy games or games that required you to remember what cards had been played. Maybe I found out what types of games I liked. We laughed and laughed. Much more interactive and interesting than any other games I've played. Also the place was packed, the waiter was so personable, the food & drinks were good and they have a huge selection of Mead! What more could one need!

  • And So It Goes

    January 25 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Another productive day in Austin. I picked up a rental car at the airport this morning then drove around for a bit. Ended up going to an old favorite, El Camino Realer for their spinach mushroom omelette. Then stopped at Academy to check out the sneakers just in case I could find something. Sure enough, I managed to find a pair of Sacony's in my size on sale for $45. Yay!

Stopped in to visit Jeannie at the hospital. She's being transferred to Rehab today. She fell asleep for a bit while I was there and she did a lot of twitching and moving in her sleep like my dad used to do. It's weird...

Found a little coffee shop called Jo and had a Cafe au lait.

Then spent a couple of hours working on cauling my digital photos which has been on my to-do list for quite awhile. Also listening to an audiobook that I was enjoying. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman.

Then went to Wendy's for a bit of TV watching before returning to David's. So a very busy and productive day!

  • I'm So Happy ..

    January 28 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

Suddenly feeling So Happy! Many factors involved.

I so enjoyed seeing old friends and hanging out with my son. I met with Nick, my financial advisor today and things are looking good. I leave for Seattle tomorrow. I hope I can keep this positive mood going!

Also, Bev and I have our next trip in the works. Not 100% planned but we are going to Europe in April.

Addendum: if you're wondering about the photo; GLOW is a Netflix series that David introduced me to. I wasn't sure about it at first but by the third episode I was hooked. Instead of watching a movie, we watched the whole first season tonight. I love it. 🎊 It doesn't sound like something that might be so intriguing. On the surface it is about a director trying to make a show featuring women wrestlers. But it is also a study on women's friendship and sisterhood. And there are 2 more seasons!

  • Doom Scrolling !?!?!?

    January 31 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 43 °F

I spent hours yesterday doom scrolling through news and shit on FB. Can this really be happening? I expected some chaos but this.is beyond my expectations. I thought he would be subtle and underhanded. But this is the scariest thing I could ever imagine. We are witnessing the rise of fascism in the U.S.Read more

  • First Snow Fall

    February 3 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 39 °F

Odin was sick on his birthday weekend so we celebrated his birthday this last Saturday. He had friends over and although he wanted me around, l really wasn't needed. And I ate both pizza and cake and felt pretty shitty afterwards. It's pretty hard to avoid gluten and other unhealthy foods while at Heather's. I've only spent one night at home since I got back to Seattle. The constant doom scrolling is not helping me complete anything on my to-do list. And thing are not improving.

Yesterday Artemis wasn't feeling well. She's hardly ever cranky so it was obvious something was wrong. I offered to stay home with her on Monday if she still wasn't well. So...today I ended up taking care of her. And then partway through the day Josh brought Odin home from school cause he wasn't feeling well. I wonder if I'm pulling grandma duty tomorrow too.

We did get a little snow yesterday and today but it didn't stick. Roads are still clear.

I sure hope everyone feels better soon

  • Snow Day

    Feb 5–6 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 37 °F

We woke up to a couple of inches of snow on Wednesday. Artemis' daycare was cancelled and Odin school was on a delayed start schedule and even then only on zoom. It had been awhile since they'd used zoom so it sounded a little chaotic and then Odin's laptop wasn't charged and shut down. It took a bit to power up and longer for his teacher to notice and let him back into the "meeting".

It was a bit of a rough day and I got nothing done. Artemis was very cranky. Not sure if she still isn't feeling well or just learned how to cry for attention.

Today Odin is doing school on zoom. I can't say I'm pleased with how it's going. But he is also out of his ADHD medication which is probably contributing to his wandering.

And I am still doom scrolling. As of today, it looks like people are fighting back against the coup. But what's happening is so incredible. And I am sick to my stomach (or heart) at the but in to the propaganda. The indoctrination of the american public by the Fox 'news' pundits is so pervasive that many still believe that what is happening is GREAT! even my own brother continues to believe everything Fox tells him and claims all the real news reporting is "rediculous stuff from the liberal media" .

I guess 99.9 percent of my Facebook friends are "liberal" as it's only Steve's replies and posts that upset me. But I am shaking. If all his MAGA cohorts are like him, there is no reasoning with them. Even if we are on the road to a complete breakdown of democracy and society as we know it, they will never give up. I am beyond disgusted. I feel like I'm having a continuous panic attack.

  • A New Week

    February 10 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 32 °F

Quiet weekend with no vehicle. The sun was out yesterday and Josh helped me get Odin to take a walk with me yesterday. It was so nice to just walk and chat about numerous random things, just the 2 of us. Then Josh took him to watch the Superbowl at Darcy's & Ean's, so Heather and I had some nice quiet time once Artemis went to bed.

Today I skipped walking group cause I have a Dr appointment and with no van I'm taking buses. Soon I will be good at this! And now that I know how to use google maps to navigate public transportation it's pretty easy

  • As Our Democracy Faulters

    Feb 12–16 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 41 °F

Another crazy week. I cannot express the degree of fear and anxiety that fills my ❤️ and soul. I can't imagine what this country and world will look like after several years of this! I refuse to type their names! That's all I'm going to say about it.

In other news, my van was in the shop til Wednesday. Finally the brakes are fixed. But they forgot about the blind spot mirror. Oh well, guess I'll have to bring it back eventually. I went home to get packed for Puerto Viarta but stayed up late watching TV and just chilling. So I didn't get it completed. I planned on finishing Friday and then going back to Heather's. Of course nothing is going as planned. Friday morning Heather called to let me know that Odin was not feeling well and was staying home from school. I was going to try to finish packing and then head over. Odin called me before 10 and begged me to come sooner. He was in bed trying to sleep. That sounded ominous so I drove over. He had a fever and was definitely sick. I laid in bed with him and he managed to sleep for awhile. Then we sat on the couch & watched a bunch of Mark Robber videos. He was back in bed and sleeping by 5.

I had some dinner then went home to finish packing and drove back to Heather's.

Footnote. For some reason this was still showing as a draft today (2/19). Uploading now.

  • Worst Vacation Ever

    Feb 16–20 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

We made it to Puerto Viarta. It was the longest 4 hour flight, felt like 10 hrs. Heather was sick with a stomach bug and Josh and I passed Artemis back and forth and attempted to keep her entertained.

By Saturday night Josh was sick and by Sunday night I was. The first 24 hours are the worst then it's just abdominal pain & lack of appetite or ability to eat. At least we weren't all at the worst at the same time.

Sure hope I at least lose some weight.

  • Last Day of VaCa.

    February 20 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

My tummy is finally feeling almost normal. I did learn one positive thing: I now know how to eat slowly and assess my status between bites! LOL

All in All it's been a decent vacation. It's not a bad place for a family. The older kids are safe to roam a bit. The pools are clean and the beach is lovely. Odin initially didn't want to even look at the ocean. He ended up getting a boogie board and learning how to ride the waves. He didn't even want to take a break. Artemis enjoyed everything and did really well. And it was great to get away from winter.

On the not so great side, besides everyone getting sick, the food was mediocre, our room was on the 3rd floor with NO Elevator, and there was loud annoying "music" til after midnight every evening.

But other than that, we all got some much needed R&R

  • Homecoming❤️

    February 21 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Hot Tea is not a thing in Mexico. Also Hot is not a thing. 'Hot food' tends to be luke warm if warm at all. And coffee barely warm in tiny cups! The tea on the flight was at least hot and it was the first cup of tea I'd had in a week, perhaps the longest time I've gone without tea since I reached adulthood. I think I am going to enjoy being home even if it is still winter . ☃️

I'm reading a book and I had to stop to copy this excerpt. It is perhaps the best and most articulate explanation of why I started this blog. :

"..... I've come to believe that experiences congealed when you talk about them, either with friends or in writing. To tell stories, you have to think about the significance of things that happen to you and their casual relationships, so that by recounting the events of your life to someone else, you reveal those events meanings."

Of course I'm not sure anyone would see any meaning in my little journal but I do find some amount of introspection as I recount the events of my days.

A perhaps fleeting thought the book has ignited, since it happens to be about a young woman's summer journey through a bunch of national parks......I was hoping to travel through some national parks on my way to Phoenix in March/April and since our lovely felon czar has cut funding for so many projects, and infrastructure AND fired a bunch of NP employees, perhaps the focus of my trip and writing should be the impact I see as I travel. At least that will give me a focus.

  • Update March Forth!!!!

    March 4 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

The coup continues. And I continue to spend way too much time listening to podcasts, reading & scrolling through the news and Facebook. The orange clown gave a ridiculous 'state of the Union' speech last night. I did not listen to it but heard enough afterwards to make me sick. It is incredible that the Republicans are clapping and supporting this shithead.

And that's all I can say.

  • A Few Condo Updates

    Mar 17–21 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

Finally got some work done on my Condo. New light with a fan in the kitchen. Plus a new faucet and under cabinet lights. Also replace some of the old outlets. Bathroom faucet and shower plumbing was more complicated and involved calling 911 to have the fire department come and turn off the water when a fitting broke. I'm sure I will enjoy it all eventually.

I put together the hanging Lotus Lamp that I bought in Canada but haven't decided where to hang it.

And I am working on planning my road trip.

  • CRY, THE BELOVED COUNTRY

    August 10 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 93 °F

I picked up a copy of 'Cry, The Beloved Country' at a thrift store. I knew nothing about it other than I recognized the name and it was considered a Classic by some. I have really been enjoying it. I like the authors style and though the plot is heavy, he manages to make it light hearted and heart warming at the same time. It was written 75 years ago and takes place in South Africa during turbulent times. Sad to say it is very much relevant to the history and current state of affairs in the US.

I'm going to jot a few quotes here so I can refer back k to them.

"It was permissible to allow the destruction of a tribal system that impeded the growth of the country. It was permissible to believe that its destruction was inevitable. But it was not permissible to watch its destruction, and replace it by nothing, or by so little that the whole people deteriorates, physically and morally.
The old tribal system was, for all it's violence and savagery, for all its superstition and witchcraft, a moral system. Our natives today produce criminals and prostitutes and drunkards, not because it is their nature to do so, but because their simple system of order and tradition and convention has been destroyed. It was destroyed by the impact of our own civilization. Our civilization has therefore an inescapable duty to set up another system of order and tradition and convention."

"The judge does not make the Law. It is the people that make the Law. Therefore if the Law is unjust, and if the Judge judges according to the Law, that is justice, even if it is not just.
It is the duty of the Judge to do justice, but it is only the People that can be just. Therefore if justice be not just, that is not to be laid at the door of the people, which means at the door of the White People, for it is the White People that make the Law."

The main characters are priests so there is a lot of praying and religious references. It definitely makes one see how how people living in hopless circumstances turn to religion for a bit of hope and comfort.

"-- I have never thought that a Christian would be free of suffering, umfundisi. For our Lord suffered. And I come to believe that he suffered, not to save us from suffering, but to teach us how to bear suffering. For he knew that there is no life without suffering. "

Makes a Hell of a lot more sense than 'he died for our sins'

    (Umfundsisi = parson or father)

  • Grandma for a Week

    Aug 22–28 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

Odin spent almost the whole week with me. He came with me to my condo Friday evening. We stopped at Safeway to get food for the week. His goal was to stay up late every night. My goal was to have fun and survive with a minimal mess. He so reminds me of PigPen from Charlie Brown.

Sunday, Joshua picked him up to go fishing so I got a little break before picking him back up.

Every night we watched another episode of Harry Potter. Each movie gets a little darker. I found I really had to pay attention after the first couple. It was hard to tell who was a good guy, who was evil, and who would turn out to be a double agent; pretending to be on Voldemort's side to be able to double cross him. When I get back, I get to watch the prequels.

Tuesday we went to Henry Moses Aquatic Park and played in the wave pool for 3 hours. Afterwards we went to the new Sushi/Habachi restaurant, Mizu. It was expensive but Odin really enjoyed it.

Then Wednesday we went to the "immersive" Bubble Experience. Also expensive but we had a great time and are planning on taking Heather and Artemis when I get back to Seattle.

We ate out several times: ModPizza, McDonald's.

And Thursday we hung out while I got ready to head back to Tx. And then I brought him home, Made dinner and came back to my condo.

All in All a fun week filled with adventures
