      Tallin - Riga

      Driving from Tallin to Riga brought us to some hidden gems: first the waterfall of Jägala and second the submerged ruins of Rummu prison. Check out the photos!
      Riga is a young and vibrant city but our stay for just one night was too short for any kind of sightseeing besides the walk “home” from a superb Vinothek after an evening with wine, tapas and a lot of fun.Read more

      KGB Museum

      Wie angekündigt, waren wir nun noch im KGB Museum.
      Von außen ein wirklich schönes Gebäude und innen bekommt man dann das wahre ich des Gebäudes geboten.
      Angefangen von der Anlieferung der Leute, Verhöhrung über die Zellen und den "Freilauf" für die Gefangenen.
      Unser Guide hat uns über den Zeitabschnitt in den 40ern und 50ern erzählt, da dies die schlimmste Zeit war. Rein aus physischer Gewalt gesehen. Nach dem tot von Stalin 1953, wurde es dann mehr psychisch.

      Am Ende sind wir noch durch den Exekutionbereich gekommen, ein wirklich bedrückendes Gefühl.

      Wirklich interessant zu sehen, aber es ist immer wieder erschreckend was sich Menschen gegenseitig an tun.      Read more

      Riga zu Fuß

      An unserem ersten vollen Tag, haben wir das einigermaßen trockene Wetter genutzt und alle Sehenswürdigkeiten und Sightseeingspots, die bei schlechtem Wetter nicht so sehenswert wären, abgeklappert.

      3. den: SVK vs LAT

      Dnes pani M spala do jedenastej, takze ja ako vzorny manzel som pripravil ranajky na izbe. Posilneni sme pozerali prvy zapas v TV (SUI - SLO). Potom s pani M prechadzka do mesta (samozrejme bez juniora, ktory lenosil na izbe), odlovena jedna keska a konecne dobry cajik v miestnej cajovni (takze zapas NOR - KAZ sledovany iba online). Po cajiku spolocny obed uz aj s juniorom v prijemnom podniku Beer Museum - vyborne pivecka a tiez jedlo. No a potom uz sup do dresov a ide sa na Lotysov. Armosfera v arene opat skvela, i ked divakov bolo menej (8.930), ako ked hrali LAT s CAN (9.260). Po paradnej 1. tretine, ked sme mohli dat aj 5 golov, ale dali iba 1, to boli opat klasicke nervy a specialne posledne minuty. Tentokrat sme to ale ustali a vitazstvo 🇸🇰 2 : 1 🇱🇻 je doma, jupi!!!
      Cestou na izbu povinna zastavka v Buberts a oslavna flaska vinka s tanierom chutoviek. No a hlavne vysoko odborne analyzy zapasu s Lotysmi, Slovakmi a Cechmi. Majitelia podniku (manzelia) su skveli. Zajtra sme tam po zapase opat ;)
      No a aby sa nezabudlo, dnes ja a Reb po 16 bodov, pani M a junior po 14. Cize celkovo Reb ma 28, ja 26, pani M a junior po 24. A nasi chlapci 3 😜      Read more

      KGB Offices

      KGB Offices, these building originally an apartment block became home to the KGB during the Soviet times in Latvia. The tour took from the entrance through to the secret doorway into the inner workings of the KGB. For many the doorway into the office was a one way door as many did not leave. First stop was the registration room, then one of the many interrogation rooms (complete with on way mirror for people to watch), then it was to the underground cells, exercise room, kitchens, offices and finally the execution room, were over 180 people were killed. Though there are papers to support the amount killed here, much of this was estimated via the number of bullets pulled out of the wall- this is shown by the coloured stickers.Read more

      Day 10

      Die erste Woche

      February 11 in Latvia ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

      Die erste Woche ist jetzt 'fast' vorbei und es war alles ganz schön aufregend und gleichzeitig sehr entspannt.
      Ich habe direkt am Montag nach meiner Ankunft der Uni einen Besuch abgestattet um meinen Studierendenausweis zu bekommen und meinen Stundenplan. Dabei habe ich festgestellt, dass die Uni auch schon direkt losgeht und ich den ersten Tag schon verpasst habe. Ich habe jetzt am Anfang erstmal Dermatologie. Jeden Morgen um 8.15 bis 10.30 Uhr haben wir 'praktischen' Unterricht, der eigentlich mehr Seminar Charakter hat. Wir sind 12 Studenten in der Klasse. Ich habe am ersten Tag im Bus auch schon direkt Serena kennengelernt, eine spanische Erasmusstudentin, die schon seit August in Riga ist. Das ist mega hilfreich.
      Der Rest der Klasse studiert fest in Riga und es sind 4 deutsche, drei finnische und 3 portogisische Studenten.
      Nachmittags bummle ich entweder durch die Stadt, bereite die Uni Kurse vor oder mache Yoga, in unserem echt coolem Yoga Keller.
      Wir haben viel Schnee, aber auch viel Sonne und so habe ich auch schon eine sehr spannende Stadtführung durch die Altstadt gemacht. Auch gibt es hier viele Parks, die mit ihren zwitschern Vögeln und dem glitzerndem Schnee einen romantischen Charakter haben.
      Am Wochenende war im Wohnheim viel los, sodass man bei Kochen und Essen in der Küche viele Leute kennenlernt und wiedertrifft.
      Dabei habe ich auch Majda getroffen eine Erasmus Studentin aus Prag mit der ich auch am Samstag auch die Silver Welcome Party gegangen bin und die Nacht durchgetanzt habe 💃
      Heute war also schlafen angesagt, mit meiner Mitbewohnerin quatschen und den Unitag morgen vorbereiten.      Read more

      Latvia: Riga

      And so it was onto Riga we went...another beautiful capital city in the Baltics! More cobbled streets and great medieval architecture. 😍One thing we didn't know, is that it's actually the basketball world cup on at the moment. The 2nd thing we didn't know, is how big basketball is as a sport in these Baltic countries!🤯 The pubs are packed and they've even got fan parks for this! We've also been fortunate enough to see each team since Finland playing whilst in their home country. I've never really been into Basketball, but I must say, it is tough not to enjoy it when there's a whole crowd of people cheering! Anyways, we found one of these fan parks in Riga and it was very exciting when Latvia beat Spain to get through to the QFs which they are playing tomorrow.
      Our attention in Riga then turned to the food. We still felt like we hadn't had a proper engagement supper, so we managed to get a spot at a really quaint little restaurant serving traditional Latvian cuisine. This place ended up being great! Emz had potato pancakes with pickled herring as a starter and fried herring with mash as a main. I had a grey pea salad (peas which are only grown in Latvia which is quite cool) and EEL (yep, eel! 1st time over ever eaten it) and mash as a main. We both quite liked the eel despite Emz's initial trepidations. We then shared another interesting dish called a rye bread soup for dessert. Overall another good stay in a Baltic capital and it was now time to see what the Latvian countryside had to offer!      Read more

      Über Pfingsten ging es ins Baltikum nach Lettland.
      Die Anreise verlief ziemlich chaotisch.
      Erst gab es erhebliche Probleme bei der Bahn, dann eine endlose Schlange bei der Sicherheitskontrolle und am Ende war der Flug über eine Stunde verspätet.
      Zumindest in Riga lief dann alles reibungslos und wir waren schnell mit dem Bus in der Innenstadt.
      Die letzten Meter erkundeten wir schon etwas die Stadt, bevor es ins Hotel Valdemars ging.      Read more

      Stadtbesichtigung. Lettland‘s Hauptstadt steht auf dem Programm. Schon viel mehr los. Zeigt sich schon beim reinfahren.
      Stadt ist ne Mischung aus bisschen moderne, bzw renoviert. Und dem sowjetischen Einfluss. Und Altstadt. Vor allem das noch unrenovierte zeigt sich sehr oft.
