    My original idea was to depart early and go to Stenskäret (the island I stopped by last time, when it was raining cats and dogs). But eventually I left Luleå just before noon, and decided to not go very far and stop at Junkön. It's a nice little harbour still used by local fishermen.
    Since I arrived there early I had time to take a reef in my mainsail in view of tomorrow and to try adding a couple of blocks to help adjust the sail better when reefed.
    Sauna and swimming were also on my agenda for the evening and now to bed!

    Mon idée de départ était d'aller jusqu'à Stenskäret (l'île où je me suis arrêté à l'aller quand il pleuvait autant comme autant). Mais j'ai quitté le port de Luleå juste avant midi et j'ai décidé de ne pas aller très loin aujourd'hui. Je me suis arrêté à Junkön, c'est un joli petit port qui est encore utilisé par les pêcheurs locaux.
    Comme je suis arrivé tôt, j'ai eu le temps de prendre un ris dans ma GV en prévision de demain et d'ajouter deux poulies qui devraient m'aider à mieux tendre le point de chute de ma voile quand elle a un ris.

    Christ with a Kite!

    I managed to have an “early” start today, and left Junkön at 7:05 and was under sails 20 min after. The first part was relatively easy, navigating around Junkön and exiting Luleå's archipelago. Things got more complicated after that 😅

    There was a lot of wind forecasted, and as I was leaving the archipelago, I took a second reef on my mainsail to be ready (lesson learned from previous times 😅). However, that was not enough…
    Elvira was riding a strong and tall cross sea, with the wind sometimes right on the beam, sometimes 3/4 back. The pace was exhilarating, but also a bit worrying: it's not every day that one see the spray generated by the bow fly high and make a sharp 90° turn instantaneously. At that point I thought best to reduce the sail area even further and rather than removing the mainsail entirely, I opted to try to partially roll my front sail. It answered really well: stirring became easier, I could also point the boat closer to the wind and try to get some shelter behind an island that was on the path. It helped to at least reduce the amount of sea I had to deal with!

    The sun came out around that time as well. Although it was still early at that point (barely 1pm), I thought I would still start to make my way to a stop. I elected to go back to the guest harbour I'd visited on the way up: Furuögrund.

    So here I am, having a relaxed afternoon, trying to rest my arms and my back.
    And still it was great fun to sail like this! Yeepee! 8+ kts with a reduced front-sails and 2 reefs...
    I've covered 46 nm in nearly 7h of sailing, not bad!

    J'ai réussi à commencer tôt ce matin. À 7 h 05, je partais de Junkön, 20 minutes plus tard, j'avais hissé les voiles. Le début était assez simple : naviguer autour de Junkön et sortir de l'archipel de Luleå. C'est après que les choses se sont compliquées un peu 😅.

    Les prévisions annonçaient beaucoup de vent aujourd'hui hors de l'archipel. Aussi, j'ai pris un deuxième ris avant d'en sortir en prévision (l'aller m'aura appris à anticiper un peu mieux 😅). Mais ce n'était pas assez !
    Elvira fonçait dans une mer perturbée, mais bien formée avec des vagues venant de deux cotés à la fois avec un vent tantôt de travers tantôt 3/4 arrière. La vitesse était grisante, mais un peu inquiétante à la fois : ce n'est pas tous les jours qu'on peut voir l'écume projetée par l'étrave monter si haut et faire un virage à 90° sous l'impulsion d'une bourrasque.
    J'ai pensé qu'il fallait que je réduise encore plus ma voilure et plutôt que d'affaler complètement ma grand voile, j'ai choisi d'enrouler partiellement mon génois. Ç'a bien marché : Elvira est d'un coup devenue plus manœuvrable et plus facile à pointer près du vent. J'en ai profité pour aller chercher un peu de répit à l'abri d'une ile qui était sur le passage. Ça m'a bien aidé à réduire la force des vagues.

    Le soleil a pointé son nez à ce moment-là aussi, et même s'il était encore tôt (1 h de l'après-midi), j'ai commencé à me diriger vers mon arrêt pour la journée. J'ai choisi de retourner à une marina que j'avais visitée à l'aller : Furuögrund.

    Alors me voila, une après midi de détente et repos, j'essaye de relaxer mes bras et mon dos. Dans tous les cas, c'était très rigolo de naviguer comme ça ! Faire 8 nœuds avec 2 ris et un génois à moitié enroulé, c'était assez incroyable.

    Not so quiet a day

    Bjuröklubb! Finally, I managed to reach today's destination! This wasn't the relaxing day I had hoped for!

    It all started rather well. I even saw a seal as I was leaving furuögrund who once they realised that I was close jumped in the water but kept looking at me with just eyes and nostrils above the water.

    The wind started as expected and the sea was rather quiet for a good part of the day but around 2 p.m., the wind started to grow stronger and stronger, I took in one reef, then another and that seemed to do the trick for a while but in the end, I still had to roll a bit the front sail. I also tried to look for some shelter in the lee of an island and then off of the coast but without success, in the end, as it got even worse when I was just a few miles away, I started the engine and did the last 1.5-2nm with it.

    I'm now at the SXKK buoy and I'll wait to see what is up in the morning before deciding what is next.

    Bjuröklubb ! Enfin ! J'y suis arrivé ! Ce n'était pas le jour de détente que j'espérais…

    Ç'avait pourtant bien démarrer. J'ai même vu un phoque qui dorait au soleil sur un rocher. Quand il s'est rendu compte que j'approchais, il s'est mis à l'eau, mais a continué de m'observer avec juste les yeux et les narines hors de l'eau.

    Le vent était comme prévu au début et la mer assez calme, mais, vers deux heures de l'après-midi, le vent est monté bien comme il faut. J'ai pris un ris, puis un deuxième et ça m'a permis de continuer un moment. Mais finalement, il a fallu que j'enroule une partie de mon génois pour pouvoir continuer. J'ai essayé de m'abriter près d'une île et ensuite près de la côte sans y trouver de répit. Quand je n'étais plus qu'à quelques miles de l'arrivée, le vent et la mer ont encore forci et, quand il ne restait plus que deux miles à faire, j'ai mis le moteur et j'ai fini comme ça.

    Je suis maintenant à une bouée du SXKK (le club de voile croisière suédois), et je verrai au petit matin quelles sont les conditions et le programme pour la journée.    もっと詳しく

    Staying put...

    Today, I missed the opportunity to advance further. I was knackered after yesterday's afternoon and Sunday's tough sailing, so I got up kinda late. By that time, the forecast was showing too much wind coming too quickly to have time to sail to another spot before things would turn messy. So I stayed here and waited patiently while the wind and the rain kept on coming.

    I'll put a few pictures from some evenings in Luleå instead.

    Aujourd'hui, j'ai manqué une opportunité d'aller plus loin. J'étais fatigué des deux derniers jours de voile musclée. Du coup, je me suis levé un peu tard. Trop tard pour profiter du léger calme et naviguer avant le retour du gros temps annoncé par la météo. Et bien, je suis resté sur place et j'ai patiemment attendu pendant que le vent et la pluie passaient et passaient…

    Today started a bit bumpy but got calmer and calmer as the day went on.
    I waited a bit before leaving because I was hoping it would allow me to slip in after the strong winds had started to move away from the coast. It kinda worked. I started with very little sail area because the wind was still really strong, but as time went on, I could start to open the entire geona, and release the reefs one by one.

    The sea was really nice to look at, well, once the rain subsided a bit and the sun started to light up the horizon.
    A bit less than 7h of sailing to cover 36 nm, that's OK! I am back in Ratan, a place where I took sheltered on the way up. Sadly, the restaurant that was quite nice last time is closed for the season... So soup in the boat instead!

    Aujourd'hui a démarré un peu sport, mais est devenu plus calme au fur et à mesure. J'ai attendu un peu avant de partir ce matin pour essayer de me faufiler le long de la côte après que le gros temps s'est éloigné un peu. Ç'a plutôt bien marché ! J'ai tout de même commencé avec très peu de toile, car le vent était encore bien fort au départ, mais petit à petit, j'ai pu dérouler le génois en entier, puis, enlever les ris un à un dans la GV.

    La mer était très belle à observer, enfin, une fois que la pluie s'est arrêtée et que le soleil a commencé à briller sur l'horizon.

    Un peu moins de 7 h de voile pour faire 36 miles, c'est pas mal ! Je suis de retour à Ratan, où je m'étais abrité du gros temps à l'aller. Malheureusement, le restaurant qui était plutôt sympa la dernière fois est fermé pour la saison. Du coup, soupe dans le bateau !    もっと詳しく

    Umeå, here we go

    Today, I was ready early but I had to wait a bit. There was a thick fog all around. When it cleared a bit (around 9:30) I set off.
    It was all rather ok albeit not comfy: there was a lot of swell and little wind to help stabilise the boat. After a couple of hours of broad reach zigzagging between rocks, I arrived in more open waters. At that point, a new sea started to set in, coming from the other way and a quite big one at that. After a bit the wind died down and I was left hanging in the big waves. Fortunately that didn't last too long and the wind picked up again, right in my teeth and gusty. That didn't really help with the comfort part of it but once the wind settled a bit I was able to sail more happily toward Umeå and here I am.

    There wasn't much to see and look around at first. Only low grey clouds and mist. But after the calm, there was some sunlight at the horizon and it opened up a bit as I was nearing Umeå.

    Aujourd'hui, j'étais paré de bonne heure, mais j'ai dû attendre un peu. Il y avait un brouillard assez épais tout autour de Ratan. Quand le brouillard s'est un peu dissipé, je suis parti (vers 9:30). C'était assez ok, mais assez inconfortable : il y avait beaucoup de vagues et peu de vent. Du coup Elvira était assez bringuebalé par les vagues. Après quelques heures de zigzag au grand largue entre les rochers, j'ai atteint une partie plus ouverte. À ce moment-là, une houle assez haute et forte a commencé à se former dans la direction opposée de celle qui existait jusqu'à présent. Peu après, le vent a disparu et m'a laissé en plan au milieu de ses grosses vagues.
    Heureusement ça n'a pas duré très longtemps et le vent est revenu, mais droit dans ma face et par grosses rafales. Ça n'a pas trop aidé pour le confort, par contre, une fois qu'il s'est un peu stabilisé, j'ai pu avancer assez bien et atteindre Umeå.

    Il n'y avait pas grand-chose à observer au début, brouillard oblige, mais après le calme, je pouvais voir des éclaircies au loin, voire pas si loin vers la fin.    もっと詳しく

    Hiding in Umeå

    The official Swedish forecast organisation issued a warning for where I am and where I wanted to go.
    So I stay where I was and waited for the foul weather to pass. I made a laundry and realised there was nothing to dry my clothes afterwards or hang them. So I improvised one in the boat.
    I also went for a short walk around and played some music.

    L'office météorologique suédois a publié un avis de gros tempête pour la zone dans laquelle je suis et celle où je veux aller.
    Du coup, je reste sur place et j'attends que ça passe. J'ai fait une lessive avant de me rendre compte qu'il n'y avait rien pour sécher le linge ou l'étendre. Donc j'ai improvisé une ligne dans le bateau.

    Welcome to the theme park!

    I left Umeå this morning when the mist dissipated a bit. The wind was much stronger than forecasted, of course... I started on the engine for a while to get out of the narrow paths. Then the fun started...
    First off, it was quite ok, lots of waves, lots of wind, but ok. Then the theme park opened.
    Starting with a spooky train: a thick mist came out of nowhere and surrounded me. That was quite ok, I could still see far enough to know I was alone and to avoid rocky stuff.
    Followed by a bumper car on the port tack: the waves weren't in sync with the wind, and so on that side, they were beam on (on top of being messy) so Elvira was drifting, shaking, gliding in all sorts of way.
    On the other tack: rollercoaster! Just like on Thursday evening, the waves were tall, and Elvira was going up and down, up and down, on and on.
    But at any rate, I managed to reach a buoy in Järnäs where I'll spend the night hoping for fair wind tomorrow.

    Je suis parti d'Umeå quand le brouillard s'est dissipé un peu. Le vent était plus fort que prévu pour sortir du chenal évidement... j'ai donc commencé au moteur pendant un bon moment pour passer les parties étroites où il aurait été assez compliqué que passer à la voile. Après ça, c'était fiesta…
    Au début tout allait bien, beaucoup de mer, beaucoup de vent, mais c'était ok. C'est ensuite que le parc d'attractions a ouvert.
    En premier : le train fantôme ! Un brouillard assez épais s'est levé et m'a entouré d'un coup sans préavis. Heureusement, j'avais quand même assez de visibilité pour être rassuré et éviter les rochers.
    Ensuite : auto tamponneuses sur les bords bâbord amure. Les vagues ne venaient pas de la même direction que le vent, du coup sur ces bords, les vagues frappaient en plein travers du bateau. Elvira était bringuebalé, glissait, etc.
    Sur tribord amure, montagne russes ! Comme jeudi soir, les vagues étaient hautes et sur cette amure, en pleine face. Elvira passait son temps à grimper, descendre, grimper, descendre, encore et encore.
    Dans tous les cas, j'ai réussi à atteindre une bouée à Järnäs où je vais passer la nuit et espérer un bon vent pour demain.    もっと詳しく

    The ghost of Ulvönhamn

    Today I left my buoy around 8am in quite contrasting conditions compared to yesterday's afternoon. The wind was barely blowing and had done a 180°. The sea however was less strong but still coming more or less from yesterday's direction. So while I had the wind right on Elvira's beam, she was almost head on to the sea, climbing every wave.
    Around 11am the wind died for a moment, which was rather frustrating since by then the sea was a small mess with waves coming for multiple directions at once.
    Fortunately, that didn't last long and the wind came back on a close reach, which allowed me to move fast enough more or less straight to Ulvön. I had to take in a reef at some point because the wind started to pick up.
    I hesitated to go on for a bit, but a look at the forecast for tomorrow showed me an alert for a blow tomorrow from noon to midnight. So I thought I better find a good shelter and Ulvön seems like a good choice.
    This is one of the busiest places of the High Coast, but now I'm the only boat and I saw only 2 people on shore. It's all empty and closed for the season.

    Aujourd'hui, j'ai quitté ma bouée à 8 h dans des conditions assez différentes d'hier après-midi. Le vent était à peine présent et avait fait un 180° dans la nuit. La mer par contre, bien que moins forte, venait toujours de la même direction qu'hier. Du coup, j'avais le vent sur le côté, mais Elvira était en face des vagues.
    Vers 11 h, le vent a disparu pour un moment et c'était assez frustrant, car la mer était assez confuse avec des vagues qui venaient de plusieurs directions à la fois.
    Heureusement, ça n'a pas duré longtemps et le vent est revenu au bon plein, ce qui m'a permis d'aller assez vite et plus ou moins en ligne droite vers Ulvön. J'ai même dû prendre un ris en cours de route, car le vent montait.
    J'ai hésité à aller plus loin, mais après avoir consulté la météo, j'ai vu qu'il y avait une autre alerte pour coup de vent demain. J'ai donc opté pour un bon abri et entre les deux iles d'Ulvön me semble une bonne idée.
    C'est l'un des endroits les plus fréquentés de la Côte Haute en été, mais aujourd'hui, je suis le seul bateau et je n'ai croisé que deux personnes à terre. C'est tout vide et tout est fermé pour la saison.    もっと詳しく

    After I had made sure of the boat, I went for a longer walk, which took me a bit here and there on the island. I reached a place near Norrbyn where the water was so clear, I'd have loved to swim if it hadn't been for, you know… the rain, the wind, etc. On the way back I stumbled upon another nice promontory offering a nice view over Ulvönhamn.

    Après m'être assuré que le bateau ne partirait pas sans moi, je suis parti pour une promenade plus longue.     The wind blew all night long but was quieter this morning, the sea… not so much however.
    Yet there was enough wind to get out and start sailing. After an hour or two, the wind picked up a bit, but on one tack I needed to reef the mainsail to sail a bit more lightly and not press too much on the waves. On the other, however, I needed all the power of the mainsail to maintain the speed between the waves when they were side on.
    Again, I was really frustrated by the limitations of the phone's camera to show how cool the landscape is in this High Coast. It's like a small & round version of the Norwegian fjords.
    When I was only 6 NM (~10 km) away from my destination the wind died down entirely for a while and since it was still right in my face… It took me an hour to get one mile closer... fortunately it picked up a bit and allowed me to enter the channel between the islands to get to Lustholmen.

    Le vent a soufflé toute la nuit, mais semblait s'être calmé ce matin, la mer bof, elle était toujours assez formée.
    Il y avait tout de même assez de vent pour commencer à naviguer à la voile. Après une ou deux heures, le vent a monté un peu. Sur un bord, j'avais besoin de mettre un ris pour forcer un peu moins contre les vagues, alors que sur l'autre bord, j'avais besoin de toute la voile pour conserver la vitesse dans le creux des vagues.
    Encore une fois, j'étais très frustré par les limitations des photos de mon téléphone. Le paysage est magnifique. C'est comme une sorte de petite version des fjords norvégiens.
    Quand je n'étais plus qu'à 6 miles de ma destination, le vent a disparu pour un moment. Il m'a fallu plus d'une heure pour zigzaguer contre le vent et me rapprocher d'un mile… heureusement le vent a repris un peu et j'ai pu entrer dans le chenal entre les îles pour rejoindre Lustholmen.    もっと詳しく

    Reef, shake, get washed, rince & repeat

    This was a tiring day. Lots of rain, lots of waves, some fog, then a lot of fog, some wind, no wind, lots of wind, meh wind, ... the only consistency: wind in my face.

    Not much to see, because of the cloud cover.
    A few strange clouds and effects from the sun that don't show well on the phone, and that's about it!

    Finally, I had to cut it short and shelter from a rapidly engulfing fog into a small harbour, mostly deserted.

    C'était une journée assez fatigante. Beaucoup de pluie, beaucoup de vagues, un peu de brouillard, beaucoup de brouillard, du vent, pas de vent, beaucoup de vent, un peu de vent… la seule constante : le vent venait toujours d'en face.

    Assez peu de choses à voir, à cause des nuages. Quelques nuages étranges et de drôles d'effets du soleil qui ne rendent rien sur le téléphone.

    Heavy fog to start the day, so after waking up really early, I had to wait for a bit before I could go. When I did, there wasn't much wind to play with. So it was a bit on and off. I even had to run on the engine for some time because although there was not much wind, there was some stream pushing me toward the shore.
    The last part was nice though, the wind showed up enough to enjoy a good last part of the day.
    I even saw a small flock of my quickly-becoming-favourite-bird: the razorbill.
    A bit of a disappointment to realise that the restaurant there was not open, but well, at least I could buy some organic fruits.
    I also took that opportunity to tank up, to refill the battery, take in water, make the dishes with warm water, …

    Un brouillard épais au levé du soleil. Du coup, après un réveil très tôt, j'ai dû attendre avant de partir, et quand j'ai pu sortir, il n'y avait pas beaucoup de vent pour jouer. C'était un coup, j'avance, un coup scotché sur place. J'ai même dû faire des parties au moteur parce que même sans vent, il y avait du courant qui me portait vers la côte.
    La dernière partie était plus sympa cela dit. Assez de vent pour glisser tranquillement à 4-5 nœuds. J'ai même vu un groupe de petits pingouins, qui deviennent vite mon oiseau préféré.
    J'étais un peu déçu en arrivant à Stocka de voir que le restaurant était fermé pour la saison, mais la petite supérette m'a permis de prendre quelques fruits bios.
    J'en ai aussi profité pour faire le plein d'essence, recharger la batterie, remplir le réservoir d'eau, faire la vaisselle avec de l'eau chaude, etc.    もっと詳しく

    Forced pit stop in Hudiksvall

    Well, after a nice start, the day as far as sailing is concerned came to an abrupt end when after tacking to port, I saw something strange with the mast. It was bending… After a second of being puzzled, I saw that the shroud was not in the spreader any more… So I quickly took down the sails, started the engine, contacted some seasoned sailors for advice and looked for a place where I could hope for a crane to fix this. Hudiksvall it was, but that was still nearly 19 NM away. Nearly 5 hours of engine later, I managed to reach it and to find a kind person to lift me up with a crane to take the measurements of the broken piece so the Swedish supplier can fix it for me on Monday.
    I went through a lot of states during these 5 hours… rage, frustration, anger, crying and despair, acceptance and I wrapped up with some crochet.
    Now all is rather well… the boat is safely moored, I can wait here for the broken/missing piece…

    Après un bon début, la journée de voile s'est terminée de manière assez abrupte quand après avoir viré sur bâbord, j'ai vu quelque chose d'étrange avec le mât. Il pliait… Après une seconde de choc, j'ai vu que le hauban n'était plus dans la barre de flèche… J'ai rapidement affalé toutes les voiles, lancer le moteur, envoyé des messages à des voileux confirmés pour demander conseil, et cherché un port dans lequel je pouvais compter sur une grue pour réparer ça. J'ai choisi Hudiksvall, mais c'était encore près de 19 miles à couvrir… Après 5 h de moteur, j'ai réussi à rejoindre Hudiksvall et trouver une personne assez sympa pour manœuvrer la grue et me permettre de prendre les mesures de la pièce qui est partie. Le dealer suédois du fabricant du mât va m'envoyer la pièce lundi.
    Je suis passé par pas mal de stades pendant ces 5 heures… enragé, frustré, énervé, en pleurs et désespéré, ok, et pour finir j'ai fait du crochet.
    Tout est plutôt ok maintenant… le bateau est amarré, je peux attendre pour la pièce ici… ça va me donner le temps d'explorer les environs.    もっと詳しく

    Interlude

    While I was forced to stay here, I took the opportunity to attend a blues jam in Gävle. I took the train back and forth for the evening, met a student from my harmonica school, listened to great blues and tried to play myself. It was quite fun: “what shall we play? Blues in E? Yes OK!” And off we went…
    That was yesterday. Today, I got the part that broke away! So I prepared the boat to receive it, drove to the crane and found someone to help me go up the mast and put the new piece in place. Now all is ready to resume sailing!

    Pendant cette période où je dois rester sur place, je me suis offert un détour en train par Gävle pour aller à une soirée de blues. J'y ai rencontré un autre étudiant de mon école d'harmonica, écouté plein de bons musiciens et même essayé d'improviser moi-même. C'était assez marrant : "on fait quoi ? Heu, un blues en mi ? Ok !" Et c'est parti…
    Ça, c'était hier. Aujourd'hui, j'ai enfin reçu la pièce qu'il me fallait pour le mât. Du coup, j'ai préparé le bateau pour la recevoir et j'ai trouvé quelqu'un pour manipuler la grue et me soulever en face de la barre de flèche et installer la nouvelle pièce.     Frosty preparations

    So this morning, I woke up to the first frost of autumn… Not really a welcome sight… Anyway, I've filled up the petrol and the water tank, prepared a soup for lunch, a big herbal tea for the sailing and then breakfast.
    Now I'm about ready to go out and sail. I'll just put some extra layers to not freeze.

    Je me suis réveillé ce matin pour voir le premier gel de l'année… pas vraiment la température que je voulais, mais bon…
    J'ai rempli les réservoirs d'eau et de diesel, préparé une bonne soupe pour midi, une grosse bouteille d'infusion et pris mon petit déjeuner.
    Maintenant, je suis presque prêt à partir. Je vais quand même mettre quelques couches de vêtements en plus pour être sûr…

    It's a trap!

    So, after leaving Hudiksvall in the most complete freezing calm, the wind picked up with in my face with a strong sea and stream. As a result, it took me 5h and 25 nm of sailing to barely win 15 nm of southing in a pouring rain…
    So I took shelter in a small inlet where there was a buoy.
    As the forecast predicted, a strong wind blew from the South all night and turn to an even stronger wind from the North in the morning. This was actually a problem when trying to leave the inlet I'd sheltered for the night: sailboat are susceptible to the wind even when running on the engine. While trying to manoeuvre in the narrow path to exit the inlet, the wind with coming with full strength on the side and I touched an unchartered rock. So I doubled back, and stayed another night on the buoy. Fortunately, on the Sunday morning it was better, and I could leave this inlet without issues. This was such a frustrating time, though. On top of touching the rock, the conditions once out of the inlet would have been tough, but at least wind and waves would have been in the right direction and I could have made a lot of ground…

    Après être parti d'Hudiksvall dans le calme plat et gelé, le vent a monté droit dans ma face avec beaucoup de mer et un courant puissant (lui aussi dans ma face). Du coup, il m'a fallu près de 5 h et 25 miles de voiles pour gagner juste 15 miles vers le sud, dont 3 h sous un déluge…
    J'ai pris refuse dans une baie assez fermée où il y avait une bouée.
    Comme l'avait annoncé la météo, un vent bien fort a soufflé du sud toute la nuit et a tourné au nord au matin en devenant encore plus fort. C'est devenu un problème pour sortir : les voiliers sont assez susceptibles au vent même au moteur et avec les voiles rangées. En essayant de contrer l'action du vent sur Elvira pour sortir du chenal sans me retrouver sur les rochers, j'ai tapé un autre de rocher qui était immergé et pas indiqué sur les cartes. J'ai fait demi-tour et je suis revenu passer la journée et la nuit à la bouée…
    Le dimanche au matin, les conditions étaient un peu meilleures et j'ai pu sortir sans souci.
    Le samedi était très frustrant, car les conditions hors de la baie dans laquelle j'étais coincé avaient l'air d'être physique, mais ok. Dans tous les cas le vent et les vagues auraient été dans le bon sens pour une fois et m'auraient permis d'avancer beaucoup…    もっと詳しく

    Wild surf to Gävle

    On Sunday morning, I managed to leave that entrapping inlet!
    I then put up the main sail with 2 reefs, and the front sail partially rolled (1/3 left rolled up, give or take). Still, I was making a good 7kts, surfing on the swell like a lunatic.
    The only slightly annoying part of this was that the swell and the wind were too strong to rely on the auto-helm, so it was a bit of sport to have lunch, drink coffee, etc. Also, a few times I had to roll in the head sail entirely: I had the wind too far aft and the Genoa was being blanketed by the main sail, and with that strong wind, it was making too much fuzz when it was getting the wind back. I also did this to gib, making the operation a bit simpler.
    After a while it got a bit less wild but not less speedy, which was perfect. I surfed past Storjungfrun, raced along the coast until I was near Trödjehällan. There, the path narrowed a lot to fit between Trödjehällan and some rocks (Hällgrund). It felt a bit like in Mario Kart, when one has to fit full speed in a small gap and whoever was on your sides just smashes into it. In this case, it was the wave what were smashing quite high on both side (sadly, all the pictures/videos I took of the smashing waves are rubbish…).
    After that, I was almost at Hurelliharen, a small marina near Gävle.
    I've spent the Monday here, and I'm spending the Tuesday as well, working.
    If the forecast agrees, I'll try to shot forward tomorrow or Thursday.

    Dimanche matin, j'ai réussi à m'échapper de la baie où j'étais piégé !
    J'ai hissé la GV avec deux ris, et déroulé deux tiers du génois. Ça filait quand même à 7 nds comme ça, en surfant sur la houle comme un petit fou !
    Le seul "problème" était que dans ces conditions (bcp de vent et de houle), impossible d'utiliser l'autopilote, ce qui a compliqué un peu le repas de midi, les pauses-café, etc. À quelques reprises, j'ai dû rouler le génois entièrement. Parfois parce que j'avais le vent trop dans le dos : la GV déventait le génois, et avec ce gros vent, quand le génois se remplissait de nouveau, ça faisait une grosse claque à la voile et ça ne me plaisait pas. Parfois pour pouvoir empanner (tourner vent dans le dos) plus simplement.
    Après plusieurs heures, j'avais un peu moins de vent, mais ça n'a pas fait chuter la vitesse, c'était parfait. Je suis passé à côté de Storjungfrun en surfant, foncé le long de la côte jusqu'à Trödjehällan. Là, le "chemin" se rétrécissait vachement pour passer entre Trödjehällan et des rochers (Hällgrund). Avec la vitesse, ça faisait un peu penser à Mario Kart, quand il faut foncer dans un petit passage et ceux qui sont sur les côtés se fracasse dans les murs. Là, c'étaient les vagues qui se fracassant des deux cotés (malheureusement les photos/vidéos que j'ai prises des vagues ne rendent rien…).
    Après ça, j'étais presque rendu à Hurelliharen, une petite marina près de Gävle.
    J'ai passé le lundi ici, et aujourd'hui aussi en travaillant depuis le bateau.

    Back in Öregrund!

    The forecast had announced a blow from the east later in the evening, but it came a bit early!
    While this morning I had a rather easy and lovely time: going with the wind, a forming sea that was easy going, only a few gusts here and there.
    As the day went by, the sea and the wind started to mount, but it was all still rather nice and relaxing. I had reefed the mainsail directly this morning (just in case) and I was waiting to see if it could be shaken. It could not.
    Once I passed the island of Björn and started to turn slightly toward the passage between the mainland and Gräsö, it was a different story. By then the sea had properly formed, and the wind had also grown again. So I took a second reef on the mainsail, reduced the geona to a third of its surface and went on. Even faster!
    At some point I managed to keep a couple of surf for some 10+ seconds and reached 11-12 kts!
    Still, I was rather glad to reach Öregrund because it was a bit too wild to keep up for too long.
    I arrived in the marina just in time as a strong gust was shaking Elvira quite savagely on her moorings.

    La météo avait annoncé un coup de vent de l'est pour la soirée, mais il est venu un peu en avance !
    Ce matin, c'était plutôt tranquille. Vent arrière/grand largue, une mer en train de se former qu'il était facile de naviguer, juste quelques rafales…
    La journée passant, la mer et le vent ont forci tout en restant assez tranquille. J'avais pris un ris dans la GV dès le début de la journée (au cas où…) et j'attendais de voir si je pouvais l'enlever. Pas possible.
    Une fois passé l'île de Björn et une fois que j'avais tourné légèrement pour aller entre le continent et l'île de Gräsö, c'était une autre histoire. À ce moment-là, le vent avait encore monté et la mer aussi. J'ai pris un deuxième ris, réduis le génois à un tiers de sa surface et continué. Encore plus vite !
    À un moment, j'ai réussi à garder quelques vagues au surf pour plus de 10 secondes et atteint 11-12 nœuds !
    Toutes les bonnes choses ont une fin, et je n'étais pas mécontent d'arriver à Öregrund parce que c'était un peu trop physique pour faire ça longtemps.
    Je suis arrivé au port juste à temps. Une grosse rafale a secoué Elvira assez brutalement au mouillage.    もっと詳しく

    Gräddö and SNAFU

    Seeing as the weather was decent on Friday and promising to be rather bad on Saturday… I opted to go on and work on Saturday instead of Friday.
    After a start in a very faint and changing wind (that had me stuck in the middle of the channel for half an hour), I was able to sail quietly between the various islands and the mainland without issues. It was a bit strange after days and days with the land only on one side to suddenly be surrounded by rocks again.
    I took a reef before exiting the islands and entering the bay. That was a long passage but a rather nice and steady one. Although toward the end of that, the wind was more gusty and changing direction at times.
    The entrance and the progression inside the archipelago was somewhat of a tacking match: going against wind and stream in a narrow path makes for a lot of zigzags.
    At last, I was able to make a long close-hauled tack to take me within 1.5NM of the Gräddö marina.
    It was a neat sailing: 44NM in 9H.
    But here came the big fuckup…
    I was a bit too short on my stern mooring line and when giving some slack to it, I didn't pay attention to the cable's tension… One of the two lines got directly into my propeller, stopping the engine instantly… I called for assistance without success, got into my swimming suit and dived to see what the hell was going on. After a couple of unsuccessful dives, I managed to get a lift to the pontoon by a motorboat that was arriving.
    Once securely moored sideways, I contacted the season sailors support again 😅. In the morning, I dived again and followed the advice I'd been given: cut the line, try to manually rotate the propeller, and finally I managed to wrestle it out. Once out of the water, I checked that the engine was indeed running, shouted loudly of happiness and relief.

    Vu que la météo était assez favorable vendredi et s'annonçait assez mauvaise pour samedi… j'ai choisi de partir et de travailler le samedi plutôt que le vendredi.
    Après un début dans un vent très faible et changeant (qui m'a laissé scotché sur place pendant une demi-heure), j'ai pu naviguer tranquillement entre îles et continent sans souci. C'était un peu étrange après avoir eu la terre ferme que d'un côté durant des jours, de soudainement se retrouver entouré de rochers et d'îles.
    J'ai pris un ris avant de sortir des îles et d'entrer dans la grande anse. La traversée était assez longue, mais assez sympa, bien que vers la fin, le vent soufflait en rafales et changeait de direction de temps à autre.
    L'entrée et la progression dans l'archipel était une succession de virements : aller contre vent et courant fait un zigzag de 18 bords.
    Finalement, j'ai pu faire un long bord de près pour arriver à moins de 1.5NM de la marina de Gräddö. C'était une bonne session de voile : 44NM en 9 h.
    Mais c'est ici que j'ai bien merdé…
    J'étais un peu trop court sur mes lignes entre la poupe et la bouée. En leur donnant du mou, je n'ai pas fait attention à bien garder la tension dans les lignes et une des deux s'est foutue dans l'hélice, stoppant le moteur net… J'ai appelé à l'aide sans succès, du coup, j'ai mis mon short de bain et plongé pour essayer de voir ce qui se passait. Après plusieurs tentatives ratées à plonger, j'ai réussi à me faire tracter jusqu'au ponton par un bateau à moteur qui rentrait au port.
    Une fois le bateau bien amarré au ponton, j'ai contacté les voileux expérimentés que je connais une fois de plus 😅. Le lendemain matin, j'ai plongé encore une fois et suivit les conseils reçus : couper la ligne, essayer de tourner l'hélice à la main, et j'ai réussi à la sortir de là. Une fois hors de l'eau, j'ai vérifié que le moteur marchait bien et hurlé de joie et de soulagement.    もっと詳しく

    To Stavsnäs we go!

    After a relaxing start, the wind showed up and was really gusty, it made it a bit complicated to manoeuvre around some islands at time but overall it was a pretty nice a brisk sailing: 34NM in 5h30, not bad.
    I was even able to be in a hoodie and to play some harmonica in the morning.
    The weather didn't stay as nice, but there were some really nice clouds and landscapes, I'm always fascinated by how close one can get to the rocks in this country.

    Après un début assez relax, le vent est arrivé et soufflait en grosses rafales. Ç'a rendu la navigation un peu plus compliquée, surtout pour passer autour des iles. Dans l'ensemble, c'était une bonne navigation : 34NM en 5 h 30, pas si mal.
    J'ai même pu profiter du soleil en sweater et jouer de l'harmonica le matin. La météo n'est pas restée si clémente toute la journée, mais il y avait de jolis nuages et les paysages étaient superbes.     Quick bread break

    I took a small break from work to walk from the winter harbour to the summer one and checkout the bakery there. I ended up having lunch there and walking back with a lot of nice smelling bread!

    Nynäshamn again!

    After a few days in Stavsnäs, it was time to move forward. The wind was rather favourable supposedly so let's use it!
    Turns out that after an easy start, the wind got a bit testy at some point before dropping between some islands. But all in all, it was a nice day of sailing and quite nice to watch the autumn colours all around, the sun falling on some parts, etc.
    It was also quite brisk too! I arrived in Nynäshamn before 4!
    In Nynäshamn the atmosphere was a bit different from the full effervescence of the summer of course but still, quite a pleasant place to stay overnight and also quite close to Grödinge!

    Après ces quelques jours à Stavsnäs, il était temps d'aller plus loin. Le vent était supposé être assez favorable alors là faut en profiter !
    Après un début assez facile, le vent était un peu capricieux, forçant et disparaissant entre les îles. Mais globalement, c'était une bonne journée de navigation et beaucoup de jolies choses à regarder autour : des oiseaux en pagaille, des couleurs d'automne avec le soleil qui sortait juste ce qu'il faut pour éclairer le tout localement et par moment.
    C'était un assez bon rythme aussi ! Je suis arrivé à Nynäshamn avant 16 h.
    L'atmosphère du port de Nynäshamn était assez différente de celle de cet été évidemment, mais c'était quand même un bon endroit pour une escale et assez proche de Grödinge !    もっと詳しく
