      Nous passons dans l'Etat du Chiapas, historiquement le premier Etat Mexicain, qui borde le Guatemala. D'un paysage plat couvert de bush nous retournons dès le passage de la frontiere de l'Etat, dans un climat tropical de jungle et de montagnes.
      Nous visitons la cité Maya de Palenque dont l'age d'or se situe vers 900 après JC. Une architecture differente de Uxmal et surtout l'ensemble est perdu dans la jungle. A la beauté des lieux s'ajoutent les cris des singes hurleurs (je vous les fait entendre dans la vidéo) !      Read more

      Visite super pour les enfants (et les grands en fait) d'un refuge pour animaux issus de la foret primaire et blessés, victimes du traffic d'animaux ou abandonnés par leur imbecile de proprietaire (qui se rend compte qu'un jaguar adulte dans le salon c'est pas facile a gérer !).
      Du coup nous avons pu voir toute la palette des animaux d'Amerique centrale: du perroquet Macaw rouge en voix de disparition au jaguar noir en pasant par le tapir ou le toucan.      Read more

      Palenque mayan ruins

      We'd heard on the grapevine about some spectacular Mayan ruins between San Cristóbal and Tulum so we stopped off in the town of Palenque for a couple of days. It was definitely worth it and the ruins were indeed spectacular. The Mayan city of Palenque (founded around 200 B.C and active till around 800 A.D) was originally known as 'Lakamha' literally "big water" after the large River that flows through the city. This was redirected by the Mayans to stop flooding and direct fresh water for drinking and agriculture. Which in itself is an incredible feat or engineering for a city built over 2000 years ago. The rest of the site is even more impressive. The huge temples are really imposing, each one a gigantic shrine to one of their many gods. One of them was so high that we had to take a 5 minute breather at the top after climbing hundreds of massive steps 😅 at the top of each stairway was the actual temple structure with stone engravings of their most successful king K'inich Janaab' Pakal doing ruler-ish stuff like vanquishing enemies or having dinner with a god made of corn. In the temple of the red queen there was even a tomb with the body of a woman (Probably a wife of Pakal) adorned with jade offerings and jewellery. She's obviously not there now but we got to look inside the tomb and at the sarcophagus which was pretty cool! A lot of the ruins have been restored to how they may have originally looked which was interesting but not authentic, I thought the temples that hadn't been restored were the most impressive. However, at the end we did a short jungle trek and got to see some of the totally unrestored ruins which looked like they were straight out of an Indiana Jones movie! 🤠Read more

      Abermals führen wir uns eine Ruine zu Gemüt. Dieses Mal aber eine mitten im Dschungel und dieses Mal offenbar eine der Mayas. Um uns herum machen Blattschneiderameisen den Weg frei, in den Bäumen brüllen Brüllaffen um unsere Aufmerksamkeit und auf dem Rasen nicken Leguane zufrieden in Richtung Pyramide. Es ist ein schöner Ort und einmal mehr hätten wir mit einem Guide vielleicht auch etwas zu dessen Geschichte erfahren. Uns bleibt nur zu mutmassen. Und so sind wir uns sicher, dass hier Aliens am Werk waren.Read more

      Palenque

      Im mexikanischen Bundesstaat Chiapas, umgeben vom Dschungel, liegt die archäologische Fundstätte Palenque und auch die gleichnamige Stadt. Schon am frühen Morgen hören wir schrille Vogelstimmen und das Brüllen der Brüllaffen vom Hotel aus. Die Fülle an Grün hier im Süden von Mexiko ist wunderschön, obwohl es hier schon Herbst ist. Bis zur Ausgrabungsstätte ist es nicht weit. Erst nach 1949 und dem Fund der Grabkammer eines Königs wurden Gebäude und die Stufenpyramide von Palenque von ihrem Bewuchs befreit und für Menschen zugänglich gemacht. Auch hier haben Priester und Könige über Jahrhunderte rituelle Handlungen vollzogen, um die Götter der Unterwelt gnädig zu stimmen. Viele der umliegenden Bauwerke sind noch immer im Djungel begraben. Wir erklimmen die Stufen der Kreuzpyramide mit der Reisegruppe, deren Teilnehmer uns schon richtig ans Herz gewachsen sind.Read more

      Palenque Ruinen 1/2

      Heute war bisschen Indiana Jones. Hier gibt's alte Ruinen aus der glanzzeit der Mayas zu entdecken. 700 n. Ch. Mega schön im Dschungel gelegen. Alleine die Nacht war schon cool mit der Geräusch Kulisse also ich übernachte in einem Hostel aber die Anlage ist sehr fancy und richtig außerhalb der Stadt. Ausserdem laufen kleine Meerschweinchen mit langen Beinen hier über all rum und Ameisen :) und man kann die Brüllaffen hören :)

      So Ruinen. Zufällig lauf ich heute morgen in nen Briten rein und bin schonmal nicht alleine beim durch den Urwald stampfen. Es geht gemütlich los und richtig schön keiner sonst ist da :)

      Die Anlage ist recht groß und erstreckt sich über mehrere Km am Ende sinds wohl so 10 km Laufstrecke heute. Anschließend wird noch richtig durch den Wald gelaufen zu einem mehr außerhalb gelegenen Bauwerk. Halb überwuchert. Es ist ein sehr schöner Ort.      Read more

      Day 185

      When the jungle takes over

      Palenque is one of Mexico's most celebrated archiological sites, located amidst the jungles of Chiapas. 1400 temples and other stone ruins lie beneath the forest floor, with only a handful completely excevated and another 20 or so visible to visitors.

      We started with a jungle tour, where a local guide showed us some of the hidden temples beneath giant trees (pictures 4 and 5 are in temples below the forest), today home of thousands of bats (pic 4 has 4 in it) and snakes (luckily, no pictures here ;) ). We also swam in a small waterfall and swang from vines, you know, the things expected of foreigners in the jungle ;)

      Our little jungle trip was followed by a historic tour of the fully excevate temples and a royal Mayan palace. We learnt that the Mayans had flowing water systems, lots and lots of kings, who liked to be buried in fancy tombs with jewelry, jade stones and masks and to sacrifice people to the gods. But never rabbits, they were sacred and not to be killed.

      The most fascinating thing to me is the fact that the jungle has claimed back this place, overgrowing the old city with tens of meters of plants, dirt and giant trees. Makes me feel quite small and humbled, in a perfectly good way.      Read more

      Palenque y cascadas

      Iniciamos nuestro día a las 3am. En el hostal nos dieron un ligero desayuno y a las 4 tomamos la camioneta del tour.
      La primera parada fue en las cascadas de Agua Azul (que de azul no tenían nada, estaba muy rebotada el agua)
      Muy lindo el lugar.
      Luego fuimos a otra cascada, llamada Misol-Ha, dónde pudimos admirar la vista por detrás de la cascada.
      De ahí fuimos a Palenque, antiguas ruinas Mayas del periodo clásico.
      Un paseo bastante hermoso e interesante. El calor era abrumador, pero aún así tomamos un paseo por la selva, dónde pudimos ver monos aulladores.
      Tomamos carretera de regreso a SCC, fue bastante cansado, no solo por las largas horas de trayecto, sino por la gran cantidad de curvas y topes a lo largo del camino. De igual manera fue un tour que valió la pena.
      Llegamos al hostal a las 9pm y nos fuimos a la calle Guadalupe a tomar una copa de vino y celebrar nuestro aniversario, también por azares del destino terminamos cenando pizza (cómo en otros previos aniversarios)
      Luego fuimos a una disco de nombre Baruva, dónde pusieron excelente musica, desde pop en inglés, electrónica, reggaetón y éxitos de los 2000 en español, me encantó.
      Como dato curioso, conocimos a este vato de nombre Brian, que lo acoplamos y nos lo trampamos un rato, porque why not? Jaja
      Un aniversario bastante diferente a los anteriores,sin duda un gran día para recordar.      Read more
