    15 Julai 2023, Amerika Syarikat ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

    Miles hiked: 24.4
    Campsite: south brown Mt shelter
    Weather: 90s and sunny
One word to describe the day: vortex

Oregon smells so good! I woke up early and was hiking by 6:00 because today is supposed to be even hotter than yesterday. This morning the light is so pretty and i keep getting smells of pine trees and lemon 🍋. I think the lemon comes from a type of pine. Today's terrain was relatively easy, rolling hills in forest but my feet are still hurting me. I need to take a break every 5 miles or so to take my shoes off and stretch. Is this just part of it or can my feet hurt less somehow?! Tonight I am camping by a shelter but outside of it in my tent. The shelter has a very large resident rat. Tomorrow we are hiking past Mt McLaughlin. The next volcano in the Cascade range!Baca lagi

One word to describe the day: lax

Another hot day today, so woke up early and was walking by 6. We didn't get too many close up views of the volcano today but the few we did get were lovely. This part of Oregon isn't the most scenic. Most of the days have been in forests, no views. I know good views are coming up soon though. So just gotta keep trekking. Ian and Riley are meeting me in sisters for a day off. I'm very excited to see them. It will be a much needed boost!Baca lagi

    Miles hiked: 21.5
    Campsite: 1812
    Weather: 80s and sunny
One word to describe the day: feel

Today was beautiful. The views opened up! We had some final Shasta sightings. Feels good to see that one in the rear view!! I saw kalamath lake, Mt McLaughlin and endless alpine lakes. Tomorrow we get to Crater lake!! I sent a box there so it's resupply day! Also, hopefully shower day too. 🫠 Caroline is waiting for us at Crater lake so it will be awesome to see her again. She skipped up there, still dealing with hip issues.

We are in the middle of a 20 mile water carry, so dry camping tonight for me! First long water carry in quite some time. I'm not complaining! I restarted Untamed by Glennon Doyle today. Such a good book! I'm sleeping in the middle of a big meadow tonight surrounded by burnt trees. The second half of today was through a burn zone so I was happy to find a safe camp spot! A gal I am camping with tonight (baby spice is her trail name) also has a doggo named Riley so we bonded quickly 🐾💓

    18 Julai 2023, Amerika Syarikat ⋅ 🌙 63 °F

    Miles hiked: 14.5
Campsite: lightning springs Crater lake dispersed site
    Weather: 80s and sunny
One word to describe the day: power outage 😭

Okay that's two words but when we got to mazama village the entire park was in a power outage. That means no restaurant food!!! Oh well, I will survive. That means the next cheeseburger will be that much better. Eventually the power did come back on so we were able to charge our electronics a bit. The general store opened up so I got a microwave Mac and cheese and ate that for lunch. The restaurant hadn't opened yet and we didn't want to wait.

We met up with Caroline today!! She hitched to Crater lake to meet us. She is thinking this might be it for her. She is going to hike tomorrow and see how it goes. But we will be hiking further than her tomorrow so we kind of had our farewell day today with her. We are camping at a pretty site in the park with a good view of mountains in the distance. Tomorrow we are waking up early to see the sun rise over Crater lake 😍

    Miles hiked: 30.4
    Campsite Location: 1862.3
    Weather: '90s and partly cloudy.
One word to describe the day: 30!

Today was an awesome day. Caroline, Mel and I woke up to watch the sunrise at Crater lake. We then said goodbye to Caroline and continued on. I saw a pine marten which was cool. They are supposed to be rarely seen. Ran right in front of me! The first 17 miles were relatively flat or downhill so we got in 17 miles by noon. So I decided to shoot for my first 30 mile day! We had amazing views of Mount thiessen. We hit the highest point on the PCT in Oregon as well! And I had my favorite backpacking meal for dinner, Peaks coconut curry. Also met a guy from lititz today! Small world. Good day. I'm tired, night!Baca lagi

One word to describe the day: rashes

Today was pushed another long day and I think my body is rebelling. I've got a strange rash on my feet now. Tomorrow is a short 16 mile day so hopefully it will clear up! We hit 1300 miles today 🥳

This evening we are camping on a peninsula at summit lake. Soaked my lower body which felt very nice. The peninsula got some more wind so the mosquitos were a little less bad but still eating dinner in my tent. Tomorrow we get into shelter cove resort and I'm getting a large pizza for myself. I want leftovers for lunches over the next two days ☺️

    Miles hiked: 16.5
    Campsite: shelter cove
    Weather: 80s and sunny
One word to describe the day: awful

Today was my worst day on the trail. This rash didn't get any better over night and got worse as I hiked. Thank God we were going into a "town" today. I was in so much pain the last 6 miles I could barely walk. Definitely shed some tears but kept going. Eventually I made it to the road and got a hitch the rest of the way. Once I got to shelter cove and sat down for a bit it only got worse. The blood just rushed to my feet and made all these welts swell up. I called a teleheath doc and he was able to talk right away which was nice. He thinks it's hives. I'm thinking I am having a reaction to the permetherin that I treated nearly all my clothes in. I'm pretty sure I will not be able to walk tomorrow so I am going to take a couple of days off and probably skip some miles.Baca lagi

  • Days 83-86

    22 Julai 2023, Amerika Syarikat ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

    Miles hiked: 0
    Total miles skipped: 97

I'm bummed to skip this section, I did part of it last year! So it would have been really cool to re hike those miles. But it's easy enough to come back another time and hike them. I skipped miles 1907.6 to 2001.7 for future reference.

But all is well, I'd rather a rash that takes me off trail then an injury! Should be good to go in a few days. I was able to get a ride to La pine from a trail angel who happened to be driving from chemult to bend and offered to pick me up on his way. In la pine I did laundry and ate some Mexican food and then my friend Aleia, who lives nearby picked me up! We went to an outdoor concert in Sunriver. It was nice to do normal person things for a change 🤣 I spent the next day relaxing at her house, reading, laying in the pool and waiting for Ian and Riley to pick me up!!

Spent the rest of the days relaxing with Ian and Riley. We went into bend and checked out a climbing gym. I didn't climb, just watched Ian. Didn't want to put my feet in climbing shoes 🫠 We went to a food cart pod in Tumalo, checked out some breweries and walked around sisters. Our first night we camped at the creekside campground in sisters. Awful night of sleep, it's right next to the highway. But the next two nights we had a nice little Airbnb rented that was dog friendly. It was so nice to just relax and spend time with Ian and Riley. Not gonna lie, made it hard to get back on trail! We picked Mel up from the trailhead on my last rest day and headed back on the trail the next morning! Fingers crossed for my feet!

    Miles hiked: 23.5
    Campsite: 2025.1
Weather: smokey for the first half, clear for the second!
One word to describe the day: unmotivated

Ian dropped Mel and I back at santium pass this morning for our final 6 day push to Hood River! Not gonna lie, seeing them made today hard. It got me out of trail mode and was a little unmotivated. But it was so nice to see them, so very worth it. Today was super smokey in the morning climbing out of the three sisters wilderness and into mt Jefferson. Luckily the afternoon it cleared up. I fortunately miss a bunch of other Smokey days during my days off. Not the worst time to take a break!

Today I got to see three finger jack up close for the first time and rehike a portion of trail I did with Ian and Riley a couple years ago on mt Jefferson. I was pretty tired once I got to camp but my rash didn't flare up so that's a good sign!! The mosquitos were awful so I set my tent up as fast as I could and hunkered down for the night!

One word to describe the day: beautiful

Today was a great day. We had a pretty big climb the first half of the day. But we were rewarded with the most beautiful views of Jefferson. The second half of the day was through the Detroit burn scar. But we found trail magic! Provided by a man who did alot of trail cleanup for the eagle creek fire. He surprised a friend who was on trail. So nice! I also ran into a southbound thru hiker who I met on a day hike over the winter. We found out that we were both hiking and hoped to give each other a high five as we passed each other on trail! High fives were given! Tonight I am camping at ollailie lake. It also has a great view of Jefferson. Another very exciting event of the day was getting my first views of Mt. Hood! So close to home!Baca lagi

Today I woke up with a view of Jefferson and ollailie lake. Tonight I went to sleep with a view of Mt hood and Timothy lake. Pretty crazy to realize I hiked all that distance in one day. When I am on Mt hood and can see Jefferson in the distance it feels so far away! We pushed the 30 miles today to be able to camp somewhere that wasn't a Forest road and was near water. One word to describe the day: excited

I slept in a little bit, was tired from the 30 mile day! Hiked quickly today because Ian and Riley met me at timberline! I was excited to see them again. I hiked past little Crater lake. I had been there before with Jared. Forgot it was on the PCT. It was pretty fun walking past frog lake and crossing highway 35. Places so close to home! Ian brought the camp stove and grilled up cheese burgers for Mel and I. We hung out in the timberline lot for a bit but it was insanely windy. There is a Forest service campsite right below timberline that we stayed at since it was a bit more sheltered. Ian set up the bed in the back of the element. Was so nice to see Ian and Riley again so soon!Baca lagi

This morning my friend Kim met me at timberline! She hiked the day with me. Ended up being a 26 mile day hike for her. She crushed it! Riley crushed it too! The views were so pretty today. I got to rehike some of the timberline trail that I hiked 5 years ago. We had to cross the Sandy River which was a fairly large river. I couldn't find a dry crossing for Riley so I waded across with her. Tonight we camped above Lost lake at a spring. It's so nice to have Riley with me! Miles hiked: 21
    Campsite: hood river!!
    Weather: 80s and sunny
One word to describe the day: home!

This morning I slept in just a little bit with Riley. But we were hiking by 7:00 a.m. We had a 21-mile day to get to the eagle Creek trailhead where Ian and Kristin (Ian's mom) were picking us up. Riley did great for the first 15 mi. But I could tell she was getting tired so I took her backpack off and carried it for her. But she was still moving really slowly. So we took some water breaks. Went a little further and then she just laid down. She was done walking. I tried to carry her for a little bit but she is almost 35 lb so that didn't last long. I decided I try and put her in my backpack. I gave Mel some of my stuff to carry and threw her in. She didn't budge. She was quite happy with the setup! So I carried her all the way down to the trailhead. Ian and his mom walked up the trail slightly and as soon as she saw them she hopped right out of the backpack and walk to the rest of the way to the car. She is a smart dog! I was exhausted! But we made it!

We went to thunder Island brewing in Cascade locks to get some food. Mel and I were quite hungry. We went through all of our snacks! I got a chicken sandwich and we got a free beer. Thunder Island let's people buy beers for hikers that come through so they can have a free beer, which is fun! Thank you, thunder Island! After dinner we drove to Hood River! Slept the night in my bed. Took a shower in my shower and it was amazing! We will be spending the next three full days here. Just relaxing, seeing friends, getting box is ready for Washington, and showing Mel around town. Riley will probably sleep the entire time I'm here because she is very tired 😬

    Miles hiked: zerrrrrrro
    Campsite: home!
    Weather: spectacular
Word to describe my days off: everything!

The last few days off in hood river have been sooooo nice. I had a party at my house to see all the friends I've been missing. It was such a great turn out. I even got to meet Calder, a new addition to the friend group via joby and devyn 😍 what a cutie!! Everyone was so stoked and proud of how far I've gone. It was a really nice boost to keep going. Also a great reminder of how cool this adventure is. It's easy to focus on the day and what needs to happen, and forget how monumental this journey is and has been. I'm proud of myself!

Mel and Caroline stayed my house. We spent the other days getting an entire month of food ready for Washington and shipped out. Along with all the normal town chores which are so much easier with a car. We saw the barbie movie and openhimer! Both were terrific. We even were in town for first Friday. So we walked around downtown and enjoyed our last evening out before hopping back on trail. I also snuck in some time with family! Kristin washed my sleeping bag for me so I'm excited for a clean bag to start Washington with!

Its gonna be hard to get back on the trail but luckily the last two sections I have are the most spectacular. I'm very excited for Washington! Here we go! Last 1,000 miles!! (Sorry for the only photos I took while at home 🤪 )

One word to describe the day: Washington!

This morning Ian dropped off Mel, sensi and I off at the bridge of the gods parking lot. My friend sensi joined me for an overnight! She crushed the 19 miles, the longest day hike she has done. It's a little hard having friends join me at this point in the trail, but luckily all my friends are badass and are able to hike 19+ miles off the couch!

The day started with crossing the infamous bridge of the gods. A high steel bridge that connects Oregon and Washington. It's a high point in the PCT journey. I remember looking at this very bridge last winter when I took a cruise on the sternwheeler thinking "wow I might be walking across that bridge in a few months, having walked all the way from Mexico!" And here I am! I did it! Pretty amazing. Day one in Washington felt like Washington. Ferns and old growth trees covered in moss. After the bridge we went up! 4700 feet in about 7 miles! The rest of the day was flat or downhill. We camped at rock creek which had a beautiful swimming hole. Sensi and I relaxed in the cold water, drank a can of wine, made dinner, chatted with a friend I met in the desert and were in bed by 8:30. Good day!

One word to describe the day: unique

In the morning I walked back to the trailhead where sensi was meeting her pickup vehicle. I started hiking around 9:00 a.m. I hiked 16 mi to panther creek. I saw in far out (the app I use) comments that some people like the road which gives you views of you of panther Creek falls, less elevation gain than the trail, and also cuts 6 mi off the distance. I was already behind my trail family and had quite a few miles to catch them. so I decided to hike the road the next morning to try and catch them. Panther Creek campground is easy to access so Ian and Riley came to visit me. We drove down to Carson and got dinner at backwoods brewing and spent the night at the campground! It was a lovely unexpected day! Might as well take advantage of them while I'm close to home 🙂Baca lagi

One word to describe the day: slow

This morning we slept in. The element bed is pretty comfy! Decided to have Ian just drive me up the road and skip the miles and be able to meet back up with my trail friends who were ahead. Road walking isn't very enjoyable anyways. We drove up 5 miles to see panther Creek falls and then another 5 miles to the trailhead. As I got to the trailhead I saw Anna, a hiker that I haven't seen since lone pine! The rest of the day was filled with so many lakes. I packed out leftover pizza from backwoods brewing. 🤤 We hiked through Indian Haven wilderness, a place that's been on my list for a while! As I strolled into camp there were sooooo many hikers. I decided to keep going to see if I could find a more private spot. Found the most perfect spot by a little stream. I had packed out a canned margarita that Ian brought me. ONE HUNDRED DAYS ON TRAIL. So crazy. Today we hiked into trout lake for resupply. Trout lake is such a cute and very hiker friendly town. They have a huge network of trail angels who provide shuttles to and from the trailhead. The general store has donation laundry, charging stations, a place for hikers to hang out, towels and shampoo for the showers at the park.

We got into trout lake around noon and met up with Ian and Riley who dropped off our resupply 💓 we got a delicious burrito at trout lake taco food cart. Ian drove us to the showers which were over at the park. Which was very nice because it's hot today! And we would have had to walk there in our rain gear 😅 it's gonna be a few weeks till I see them again so we great to get one last visit. We hung out at the general store for a few hours and caught the 5pm shuttle to the trail. There were 3 trucks filled with hikers. I counted 21 on the shuttle sign up sheet. We are officially in the biggest bubble yet. I ended up hiking 6.7 miles. We were in a burn zone so eventually found a large meadow to camp in with an epic view of Adams.

Weather: cloudy turned sunny turned cloudy
One word to describe the day: Rocky

This morning I woke up in the clouds. So unfortunately no sunrise for me. I love Moody clouds though so it was still very pretty. Reminds me of the Oregon coast in the winter. The first part of the day was mostly in the trees until we started to climb, today was alot of climbing. I started getting glimpses of goat rocks wilderness off in the distance. Goat rocks is a place I've wanted to see for a while and just had not made the time. The further I got into goat rock, the more beautiful it was. Today was definitely my favorite day on trail yet. The moment I saw Rainier I started to cry. I cried the first night I got to the southern terminus and I hadn't cried since. The first cry was tears of fear and worry. This cry was tears of happiness. For the first time, I truly feel proud about what I've accomplished. I've come so far! And for some reason Rainier pulled that out of me.

In the afternoon I took an alternate called old snowy mountain. It was mostly a rock scramble up to a beautiful 360° view with a tiny bit of what felt like rock climbing 😅. I saw Adams, Rainier, surrounding goat rock mountains and beautiful lakes. Seriously so beautiful. The next section is a part of Trail called the knife's edge. The trail goes along the Ridgeline and is very exposed and rocky but again so beautiful. My feet were yelling at me from all the rocks and scree but I made it to a campsite with a beautiful view of Rainier. I have new shoes waiting for me at my box pickup tomorrow. They're also a half size bigger which I think I need. I'm pretty sure my feet are flattening a little bit.

Tomorrow we resupply at a tiny little spot called kracker barrel with a k. Unfortunately it's not a cracker barrel restaurant which sounds so good but I'm sure they have food.

This morning I woke up to an amazing sunrise of Rainier and a blanket of clouds. I had 17 miles into whites pass where I picked up a resupply box, new shoes, bear bag and a surprise box from my friends Amy and Jeff!!

The terrain Today was pretty. We had some last views of goat rocks, new views of Rainier, lakes and at the end we walked by white pass ski resort. Looks like a cool resort. Very old and great views of Rainier.

Once I got to white pass I took a shower, did laundry. Ate a salad, slice of pizza and some chicken strips 🤪 had to get a little green in there! Amy and Jeff's box was filled with all sorts of goodies from PA and excellent hiker items like wet wipes, blister treatments and new socks! They know me well! Very excited to try the local jerky and snack mix 🤤

This evening we are camping behind the kracker barrel, with a k. Sounds silly but it's actually very nice. I'm down a little hill right next to a lake! Going to get an early start in the morning. Next trail town will be Snoqualmie!

One word to describe the day: grateful

Mel's had to wait for her shoes so I got on the trail without her. She is fast and will catch me. I'm kind of excited to have a few days to 'myself'. It's nice to hike and not have to worry about coordinating with anyone but yourself :)

I want to try and make it to Snoqualmie in 4 days so that would be 4, 25 mile days. Would be totally doable in Oregon but Washington has proven to be a lot more elevation! I did get in 26 miles today, so far on track. I'm a bit worried about norovirus. There is a warning for this area and supposedly hikers have been getting it. So trying to make sure I get water from flowing sources and not touching anything without sanitizing. Fingers crossed I make it out virus free 😬

Today's hike was nice, had some great views of Rainier, lakes and vistas. Hiked the last part of the day with 'Story time'. He got his name because he likes to tell stories, go figure. I was hurting the last couple miles so it was nice to have someone distracting me with stories 😅
I am camping at a lake tonight. It's filled with overnight weekend backpackers. I found a good spot right next to the water to set my tent up.

One word to describe the day: sore

For some reason my ankles and knees felt very sore today. I'm hoping it's just because I needed new shoes, I've got them now. Also because my pack is a bit heavier right now. We have some longer water carries, a couple days of food and a bear bag. Today I hiked a little shorter and slower to be a bit easier on my body. It could also be the fact that Washington is hard! Lots of ups and downs. Anyways. Hopefully things will feel better in the am after a good sleep.

This morning was absolutely gorgeous. Amazing views of valleys, cool mountains, Crystal mountain and Mt Rainier. Crystal looks like a very fun ski resort. Will have to come back in the winter! It's terrain looks awesome and is literally at the base of Rainier.

The rest of the day was hot and in burn zones. Some PCT hikers don't seem to care about camping in burn zones. It's so odd to me! I've had a few conversations with people I've hiked with where I have to say I don't want to camp in burn zones. And I end up continuing on by myself and they stay there. I feel like it's a conversation I shouldn't even have to have! Common sense? I'm just ranting.

Tomorrow I have to get water from a flowing water source that someone commented they got norovirus from. I have purification tablets. So I'll def double treat the water. 😬

One word to describe the day: hooooot

Today was mostly under tree cover, thank goodness, because it was hot!! We had some longer water carries and some of them had norovirus warnings so I double treated them. This morning went to make a reservation for Wednesday night at the Washington Alpine club for lodging in Snoqualmie. Unfortunately It was all booked up. I only had 44 mi left to hike so I decided to book for Tuesday night and just push it. Hence my 28 mile day. For 45 bucks a night they provide a bed to sleep on, laundry, showers, dinner and breakfast! What a deal.

Washington is no joke. I'm pretty proud of myself for hiking 28 mi today. It is literally either up or down. We had a lot of elevation today and it was incredibly hot. Felt pretty good when I got into camp, considering. I haven't been this physically tired in a while. Normally it's my feet that give out first. Today it felt like my legs gave out before my feet!

Right before our last big climb, in the heat of the day I stumbled upon trail magic! It was such an amazing surprise. This trail magic was probably the best timed trail magic I've had all trail. All I could think about was an ice cold beverage, and there it was! Thank you, trail angels!!
