      Our lovely neighbour Nigel took us to Stansted. Very busy. Once through security we stopped at a Wetherspoons (as it was emptyish) for a perfectly acceptable eggs benedict and a cup of tea. Then off to the hinterland that was gate 84 for our very short easyjet flight to Amsterdam. It's very warm as we run to get the 397 bus to the centre. Just made it. A bit of a trek to the hotel in this hot weather as we navigate road traffic, bicycle traffic, people walking with bikes on the pavement, bikes parked on the pavement leaving little room for us poor old pedestrians. Find hotel (Ibis Styles), sort ourselves out and head off for a walk.Read more

      Amsterdam Day 2

      I took it slow this morning, and started the day off with some thrifting. I still felt like I didn’t have enough “warm” clothes so I was on the hunt for some. I walked to a thrift store that was 20 mins away and left with a new pair of jeans, a longsleeve, and JORTS (which I’ve been on the hunt for!) I was very happy. I dropped my clothes off back at my hostel and took the metro to the Albert Cuyp Market which had lots of different stands. I went to get some Dutch pancakes, which are just little pancakes, but they were cute. I went for lemon and powdered sugar. After that, I went to a bead store where I got some really cute charms and some earring thingies so that I can make some earrings! I went to a nearby park for a little bit, but not long. I met up with my other hostelmate, Benita who is from Australia! And we went back to the market to get some more food and look around. We had this like potato, feta, spinach crêpe, some fries with picalilly (which is like a pickle-mustard sauce?), and some more stroopwafels of course. We also went to a vintage store where I bought a really cool belt! After, we wandered around and looked at lots of the super cute house boats, many of which had luscious gardens and plants. After, she had to go to a boat tour, so I continued to wander around. I walked across many canals, and just took the rest of my day at a leisurely pace which was so nice. I went to look at this movie theatre which was designed in an art nouveau style which was cool- didn’t watch a movie but I just wanted to check out the inside. After I went to a restaurant called Waterkant, which was a recommendation for Surinamese food. But they didn’t have sandwiches at that time which made me sad, but I got this korean-glazed cauliaflower which was quite delicious, I wished it was friend chicken. I was still hungry after so I still went to find a Surinamese sandwich at another restaurant. Just to find out that they also don’t have sandwiches at that time (which was really, really disappointing), so I settled for some noodles. After that, I headed to the central station to take a tram back to my hostel.Read more

      De Pijp

      Mit der U-Bahn ging es zu De Pijp, ein Viertel, was ich unbedingt sehen wollte, was aber relativ spontan war
      Da ich eigentlich auf dem Weg war, noch Souvenirs zu holen.
      Als ich dann wieder in die Metro wollte, war aufeinmal mein Ticket weg ich zurück zur U-Bahn wollte, bin ich nicht durch das Gate gekommen mit meinem Ticket. Ich hatte drei Tickets dabei, jedoch funktionierten zwei davon nicht. Das dritte Ticket, das übrig blieb, erwies sich als ungültig, nachdem ich kurz vorher zwei andere Tickets weggeworfen hatte.

      Also neues Ticket gekauft und zum Bahnhof Sloterdijk gefahren wo mich dann auch mein Bus abholt.
      Gegessen hab ich schnell nen Burger bei Megges. War noch Satt vom Frühstück.      Read more

      Doing the Tourist Bit.......

      After breakfast 🍳🥐🧀 Jayne & I walked 🚶‍♂️ 🚶‍♀️towards the old town only this time via the Albert Cuyp Market, which was a first for me, having never ventured into the De Pijp area of Amsterdam. Originating in 1905 and with 260 stalls, this market is regarded as the biggest in Europe and is open 6 days a week from 09:30 through to 17:00. The market provides a real Amsterdam atmosphere and is popular with locals, students, and tourists selling fruit 🍉, veg🫑, cheese 🧀, accessories, clothes, flowers 💐 and fabrics.
      Leaving the market, we headed for the oldest part of Amsterdam, which also included the famous red 🚦light district and the only remaining gate of the now disappeared wall around the old town. The Waag or weigh house in English is a 15th-century building that following the removal of the walls housed the weighing scales for the local market, Nieuwmarkt, that surrounded it. After a refreshing drink 🍺 in the sunshine once again watching the world go by we walked the few hundred yards to Dam Square, pausing on Damrak looking at the reflections from the old buildings in the canal where the canal cruising boats were moored and overlooked by the Central Railway station. Dam Square was created in the 13th century when a dam was built around the river Amstel to prevent the Zuiderzee sea from flooding the city. During the sixties, the square was renowned for its Dam Square hippies. These days, it is one of the main tourist sights where entertainment and pigeons abound. On the south side of Dam Square stands the controversially phallic National Memorial statue, built in the memory of Dutch soldiers and members of the resistance who died in World War 2. Unveiled in 1956, the monument stores soil from all of Netherlands' provinces as well as from the Dutch East Indies.      Read more

      Der Magen knurrt, die Zeit rennt

      Nachdem unser Magen allmählich immer mehr geknurrt hat und zudem unsere Reservierung immer näher kam (16:45 Uhr) sind wir los Richtung Hard Rock Cafe. Auf dem Weg sind wir auf die Billardfabriek Wilhelmina gestoßen. Uns ist diese vor allem durch das schöne Graffiti & den netten Hinweis auf einen Pokéstop aufgefallen. Wir haben nicht rausgefunden ob man rein kann oder ein Laden in der Nähe ist, wegen dem knurrenden Magen hat es uns aber auch nicht wirklich interessiert.Read more

      Regen.

      Es regnet. Amsterdam ist grau in grau. Gut daher, dass ich für heute die Amsterdamer Museen eingeplant habe.
      Mit dem Rad zum Museumsplein ist - wie eigentlich jede Strecke hier - problemlos, wenn ich auch ein oder zwei mal gegen mir unbekannte Fahrrad-Verkehrsregeln verstoße. Zumindest, wenn ich das Geschimpfe der älteren Dame, die mir auf einem der Fahrradwege entgegenkommt, richtig deute. Rot scheint übrigens für Fahrradfahrer hier auch nichts zu bedeuten. Ich passe mich an.

      Am Museumplein bin ich ein wenig enttäuscht, dass der iamsterdam-Schriftzug verschwunden ist. Google (das zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch funktioniert, kurz darauf drosselt mir O2 die Datengeschwindigkeit auf vorsintflutlich) weiß natürlich mehr: der Schriftzug wird inzwischen an unterschiedlichen Orten in Amsterdam aufgestellt. Nun gut.

      Mein erster „Programmpunkt“ ist das Moco, ein kleines, aber feines Museum, das moderne Kunst zeigt. Mich zieht es hauptsächlich wegen der Banksy-Ausstellung dort hin - und ich werde nicht enttäuscht. Auch alle anderen Kunstwerke sind sehenswert und besonders.

      Noch besser gefällt mir aber dann das VanGogh-Museum. Diese Farben, diese Dynamik! Kein Druck oder Foto kommt auch nur annähernd an die Originale heran. Ich bereue nicht, mir einen Audio-Guide geleistet zu haben. Definitiv eine Bereicherung.

      In einer Regenpause radle ich weiter nach DePijp, um über den Albert Cuyp-Markt zu schlendern. Auch bei Regenwetter kann man sich hier wunderbar durchfuttern und ich probiere eine typische Amsterdamer Spezialität: eine Stroopwafel. Für alles weitere hab ich dann leider keinen Platz mehr.

      Eigentlich möchte ich noch gerne in den Vondelpark, aber es hat sich inzwischen eingeregnet und ich bin nass bis auf die Haut, als ich am Hotel ankomme.
      Den Rest des Tages verbringe ich mit dem, was bei Regen besonders gut geht: Shopping.
      Bei einem Kaffee in einer der vielen Seitenstraßen, die vom Damplatz abgehen, schaue ich ein wenig dem bunten Treiben zu. Unglaublich, wie oft mir der Geruch von Gras in die Nase steigt.      Read more
