      Mount Maunganui

      January 7, 2018 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

Woke up this morning to more rain. We were intending to visit Te Puia to see more geothermal action with geysers and a cultural show, but the rain has turned us off so we decided to just go and explore the city centre – Lake Rotarua and a free thermal park in the middle of the town called Kuirau which is a free park filled with crater lakes, pools of boiling mud and a thermal foot spa???. The rain was so heavy here, a huge tree split into two and unfortunately killed a lady in her car parked under the tree! Many parts of the north island are flooding and the rain is still teaming. The kids have constantly complained about the smell, so we decided again to push on and headed for some fresh sea air. Drove north east to Mount Maunganui, an absolutely beautiful spot, with a lovely Main beach, where we swam and enjoyed rinsing our stinky swimmers from the thermal springs in the ocean and breathing in the fresh air! In the afternoon, we decided to brave the steep climb up to Mount Maunganui and it was worth it! The views over the Bay of Plenty were spectacular! The legs are really feeling all this walking though now! Headed to a freedom camping spot along the waterfront again in Taurangi with a huge playground so the kids were entertained while I cooked dinner and we enjoyed the views in a free camping spot!!! Unbelievable!Read more

      Mount Maunganui

      November 13, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

On one of our first nights in New Zealand, we met Adam and Jake. They were our two American roommates in the Auckland hostel. They're super laid back, have lots of mechanic-know-how and had many stories to tell. They bought a van just before us and were always cruising ahead, roughly along the same road.

We caught up with them again in Tauranga. They were staying with Michael, a Kiwi/Canadian friend, for a month. They invited us to come stay there as well. It was great to play some games, explore the surroundings, cook and bake in a proper kitchen, and just hang out.

Like our first evening, we drank some beers while playing Yahtzee. After which we went eel-fishing in the dark. We were wading through shin-deep water with sharp spears... not the smartest idea after drinking. Not surprisingly, no success. More surprisingly, no (lasting) injuries.

The next day we went to the Mount Brewing Company, under Mount Maunganui. The guys "picked up" some girls, drank more beers (we made a veggie platter for a balanced diet) while playing Yahtzee, and stargazed on the roof. It's like we landed in a whole different world. To top it off, the girls were incredible singers while playing guitar!

In the morning, we had a coffee near Mount Maunganui, went to the beach and walked around and up the Mount. Great 360° views of the ocean, the city and ships below. We got back to Michael's, baked some garlic bread and banana loaf. Later we made some fresh hummus and a giant brownie. We could get used to this =)

All together, we spent one week at Michael's. Some nights we slept in the van, some nights in their spare bed. It was great to relax with new friends, have some of the luxuries of home, explore the area and work on self-containment for our van!

Sunrise Beach Walk, Winery & Hot pools

      August 4, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

This morning we got up at 6.30. We parked up by the beach and went for a short walk around the base of Mount Maunganui. It was dark but the sun was beginning to come up. We had a beautiful sunrise at sea we watched the waves crashing against the rocks as the sun came up. Great way to start the morning. We then went to New World Supermarket to get something for breakfast. We picked up some croissants and enjoyed them with a cup of tea by the beach watching the surfers.

We next drove to a lookout point Minden Lookout we had great views of Tauranga city, Mount Maunganui, the harbour, islands and far beyond. We could even see White Island in the distance. It was a beautiful sunny day and 16 degrees which is pretty warm for the winter.

We had lunch and then drove to Mills Reef winnery. We tried about 8 bottles of wine. They were all very nice. Our favourite was the Falconhead 2020 Sauvignon Blanc. It was on special we only had to pay $12 for a bottle. There was a $5 each tasting fee but the woman didn't charge us for it. Normally I'll spend loads at a Winnery. Nice to only spend $12 for a change.

After this we went to the Mount Hot Pools, natural salt pools at the bottom of Mount Maunganui. Some pools were very hot at 40 regress. It was very relaxing though. We got back about 7pm. Spent the evening relaxing in the campervan. Very tired after a busy day today.

      Drive to Tauranga

      August 3, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

This morning we did some washing and then checked out the campsite by 12. We drove to Tauranga. When we got there we went to Tuaranga Misson cemetery. The cemetery contains a number of memorials, graves and plaques commemorating men who died on active service in the Tauranga district during the New Zealand Wars. This memorial marks the burial site of 14 men of Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui, Te Whakatōhea, Tainui and Te Arawa who died of wounds received while defending their position at Te Ranga on 21 June 1864.

We then had a look around Robbins Park. They had a giant cactus tree and flowers blooming. The garden overlooked Tuaranga harbour. We also went to the Monmouth Redoubt. Women and children took shelter here during the war.

In the evening we had a walk around Tauranga Town and went out for a burger at the Irish bar. I had bbq beef with cheese and onion rings. It was so good. We stayed at a near by car park to freedom camp near a sports club. We have to leave by 7am so it's going to be an early start. However it should be nice weather tomorrow so hoping for a beautiful sunrise.

      Mount Manganui

      November 2, 2016 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Read more

      Miss Serena

      October 18, 2016 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Always remember: LEFT LIVE, RIGHT DIE! Thank you Nelson for your little driver lesson 😆

      Mount Maunganui

      October 14, 2016 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C
