      Pedicab Tour

      We originally planned to explore Manila’s Intramuros on foot, but we wound up taking a pedicab tour.

      We had already turned down several taxis and tour buses, but something about these guys drew us in. Maybe it’s because they were friendly, but not overly pushy? Or maybe because we’d already been walking 45 minutes and were feeling the heat and humidity?

      Whatever it was, Larry negotiated a price and off we went. The first part of our journey was along a wide sidewalk, but we eventuallly joined traffic.

      Manila is known for its horrific traffic. In places, everything from 18 wheelers to horse drawn carriages and bicycles share the same lanes.

      Even so, I felt perfectly at ease with our pedicab lads. They knew the lay of the land, and spoke English well enough to share historic tidbits along the way.

      The Intramuros area is home to several schools. We had a human traffic jam at one point comprised of high school and college kids. As we turned the corner, I saw a great big line. When I asked what they were waiting for, MC told me, “They are applying for jobs.”

      Really made me wonder what the job market is like here, and what sort of employment future awaits all those school kids we’d seen a moment before.

      And I’m still not sure what a “psychometrician” is.      Okumaya devam et

      Welcome to Manila, Philippines

      We should have been cruising the Yellow Sea today.

      Instead, we are in Manila, which we visited for the first time on RTW2017. I can still vividly recall the joy the Filipino crew displayed that day … either because they had the day off to visit family or because their families were joining them on the ship for the day. Some of those family members even stayed on for a short segment of the voyage, giving us a chance to meet several of them.

      I am sure a similar scenario will play out today. We’ll be long gone by then as we have a DIY day planned that we’re hoping to start as soon as the ship clears.

      Manila: Fine Arts & Lunch

      The walk from the Intramuros to the National Museum of Fine Arts, founded in 1998, was a bit longer than we expected. At least it felt that way in the humid heat. Nonetheless, we persevered. Shortly after 10:15a, admissions paid, we were enjoying the exhibits.

      The museum is housed in the Old Legislative Building, which was designed and built originally as the National Library during the period between 1918-1926. In 1945, Japanese Forces used the building as a stronghold, modifying it to include defensive installations. This resulted in heavy bombardment by American Forces that caused considerable damage to parts of the building. When the structure was rebuilt in 1949, the original footprint was followed, but with a less ornate façade … the Corinthian columns notwithstanding.

      The 29 galleries exhibit the works of 19th century “… Filipino masters, National Artists, leading modern painters, sculptors, and printmakers.” We spent over two hours wandering the galleries and hallways, studying the colorful works hanging on the walls and sitting on pedestals. Mui was inspired by several pieces that he hopes to paint with his own interpretation when he has time.

      It was well past 12:30p when we left the museum, our tummies signaling that it was time for food. Mui had found us a restaurant, but it was too far to walk. So, we hopped in a cab. The traffic was … well, just plain horrendous. Often at a standstill. But the driver knew a couple of shortcuts. Even then, it took about 30 minutes for us to get to Café Adriatico. The food was worth the effort of getting there however.

      Seated at a small corner table, I ordered the beef stroganoff; Mui got the Lapu Lapu Meunière. The portions were huge, but we nonetheless managed dessert as well … a decadent chocolate cake, to which we added a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

      We were back on the ship a little after 3:00p … with plenty of time for refreshing showers before the 4:00p sailaway … and the sail away performance.”      Okumaya devam et

      2. Manila, das haben wir noch gesehen

      Ganz schön krass, das Manila, dass wir kennenlernen ‼️
      Die vielen Seitenstraßen, die von unserem Hotel-Standort verzweigen, zeigen armselige Wohnorte 🏚️, schmutzige und kaputte Fassaden, dreckige Straßen und in diesem Dreck, in den Häusern mit den zerbrochenen oder sogar fehlenden Fensterscheiben 🪟, den Löchern in den Dächern, provisorisch mit Planen bedeckt, leben Menschen. Für uns unvorstellbar 😮.
      Vor den Geldwechsel-Stuben 💰steht mindestens ein bewaffneter Sicherheitsbeamter und fragt jeden Besucher nach seinem Anliegen.
      Vor dem großen Gebäude der "Landbank" im historischen Viertel Intramuros stehen sogar zwei Militärs mit Maschinenpistolen.
      Die Straßen laut, auf Jeder begegnen uns Jeepneys.
      Das sind in Kleinbusse 🚌umgebaute Jeeps, die die Amerikaner 🇺🇲 nach ihrem Abzug auf den Philippinen zurückgelassen haben. Allerdings werden die auch heute noch auf den Philippinen nachgebaut.
      Sehen schmuddelig aus und sind häufig mit mehr Fahrgästen besetzt als erlaubt. Sie hupen laut 📣drosseln ihre Geschwindigkeit 🐌, wenn der Busfahrer vermutet, man wolle mitfahren.
      Jede Menge Fortbewegungsmittel, die als Taxi 🚕 dienen. Pferdekutschen 🐴, Trikes (dreirädrige Mopeds), Jeepneys und die uns bekannten Taxen 🚖 mit und ohne Taxometer, mit und ohne Verhandlungsoption beim Preis 😁.
      Kleine Kinder betteln uns an und laufen unermüdlich neben uns her, obwohl wir nichts geben wollen. Wir achten auf unsere Taschen 🎒👜, denn immer wieder werden wir auf Schildern darauf aufmerksam gemacht "auf sein Eigentum" zu achten, weil Taschendiebstahl keine Seltenheit ist.
      Und so passiert's dann tatsächlich fast. Tina läuft einen Nachmittag los, nur mal eben den "Manila Baywalk" zu suchen, der unweit von unserer Unterkunft sein soll.
      Auf der Fußgängerbrücke, die von einer Straßenseite aus, die Verbindung zum Strand ⛱️ verkürzt, hängt sich ein 10 - 12jähriger an ihren Arm und bettelt unablässig nach "Money". Er lässt sich nur durch Anschreien und Wegstoßen abwimmeln und grinst ganz dreckig.
      Der offene Reißverschlussschluß an ihrer Hosentasche verrät, dass er versucht hat, irgendetwas zu finden... .
      Tja, einzig ihre Rotzfahne 🤧 hat sich in der verschlossenen Hosentasche versteckt, aber DIE hat er nicht genommen.
      Nun noch mehr sensibilisiert, laufen wir mit Rundumblick 👀😲👀🤨👀 durch die Straßen Manilas um noch ein paar Eindrücke von dieser riesigen Stadt 🏙️ zu bekommen, denn schon bald heben wir wieder ab 🛫.      Okumaya devam et

      Last Day in Bangkok 🇹🇭

      Die letzten Tage vergingen wie im Nu… In den Philippinen habe ich mich in Puerto Galera nochmals mit 2 tollen Schweizer Mädels getroffen, die ich bereits auf einer anderen Insel kennengelernt habe. Wir genossen die Zeit am Strand und feierten jeden Abend im Jam House - meine absolute Lieblings-Livemusik-Bar. 🫶🏻 Die Mädels waren bereits einige Tage vorher schon dort.. als ich dann ankam, wurde ich von allen Seiten begrüsst, da sie allen erzählt haben, dass ich ankommen werde 😅 An einem Tag wurde ich von einer Qualle gestochen und musste stationär zum Doc um die Verbrennungen zu lindern. Zum Glück ist jetzt aber alles Gut 😊

      Aach, der Weg nach Puerto Galera war auch einzigartig 😅 Es war ein super windiger Tag & Alma (die filipino Mum) hat einen Kumpel, der ein Boot hat und mich nach PG bringen kann. Zu Beginn hatte ich super bedenken, das Boot war super klein & die Wellen riesig… einmal hat es und fast erwischt 😅 Naja, bin dann wie ein nasser Hund angekommen 😂😂

      Danach bin ich dann nochmals zu Don & Mary-Lou nach Antipolo. Die freuten sich wieder riesig mich zu sehen. Am nächsten Tag habe ich dann mit Don eine Sightseeing und Shopping Tour in Manila gemacht. Die beiden sind wirklich goldig! Am Abend waren wir wie immer im Coffeeshop Agusta & schauten den Sonnenuntergang. Dazu kam an meinem letzten Tag noch ein Musiker, der Querflöte spielte. Als ich da sass, mit Blick auf die Skyline Manila und mit der hübschen Musik und an meinen Rückflug dachte, musste ich fast weinen 😥 Die 2 fuhren mich dann am nächsten Tag an Flughafen.

      Da mein Rückflug von Bangkok ist, habe ich die letzten 3 Tage hier verbracht. Das Street-Food Essen ist sooo unglaublich fein 😍 Deshalb direkt einen Thai Kochkurs gemacht 😂 Ansonsten war ich shoppen & shoppen und habe mich wie eine Prinzessin behandelt: Manicure, Pedicure, neuer Haarschnitz, Massage, etc. 😅

      HEUTE ist mein allerletzter Tag meiner Reise. Mittlerweile ist es auch ganz okay - nach Hause zu fliegen - ich habe mich mental die letzte Tage darauf vorbereitet.

      Ich bin unheimlich dankbar für diese unglaublich eindrucksvolle Reise 🌏 Soo viele tolle Momente, soo gute Menschen kennenglernt und das Leben einfach zu 100% gelebt!

      Ich freue mich ein wenig auf zu Hause - Family, Friends, Buddy & meine Wohnung 🫶🏻 aber auf das alltägliche Leben & das riesige Chaos bei der Arbeit 😳 Naaaaja 😅 aber kommt gut, ich glaube, sobald ich dann zu Hause bin, freue ich mich auch wieder 😊

      Vollgepackt mit viel Gewicht (nicht nur der Rucksack 😜) fliege ich heute Abend zurück in die kalte Schweiz.

      DANKE - für alle, die an meiner Reise teilgenommen haben. Rückblickend bin ich froh, habe ich mir die Zeit genommen, meine Erlebnisse und Emotionen zu dokumentieren. Diese Reise war voll mit spektakulären Erlebnissen, die mich aber auch teils emotional berührt haben. Diese Reise war sehr speziell für mich, da ich einfach wieder festgestellt habe, dass ich so viel mehr an Menschen & deren Denkweise interessiert bin, als Sightseeing-Touren 😅 Ich habe so viel erlebt - so viele unvergessliche Momente - freue mich die nächsten Tage mir die Zeit zu nehmen und die Eindrücke zu verarbeiten ☺️

      Die Welt hat soo viele bewundernswerte Menschen mit einem goldigen Herzen und ich bin dankbar so viele davon in den letzten Wochen kennengelernt zu haben. 🫶🏻

      Intramuros

      Intramuros, or the ‘Walled City’, is one of the oldest districts of Manila, built around 1571 by the Spaniards – and is bound on all sides by moats and thick, high walls, with some over 6 meters high. Only the elite Spaniards and Mestizos were allowed accommodations in Intramuros. Intramuros repelled numerous attacks throughout history as the Dutch, the Portuguese and the Chinese all failed.
      During World War II, Intramuros was used as a garrison and prison facility by the Japanese, but Allied bombings resulted in it, and other parts of Manila, being severely damaged.
      Today, there is a mix of historic monuments such as the Cathedral and Fort, many lovely colonial buildings and lively local residential and market streets. Pedestrians, cars, motorcycles, and rickshaws and horse and buggies for the tourists all crowd the streets and lanes.      Okumaya devam et

      National Museum of Anthropology

      The day of departure we both took in the (free!) National Museum and of particular interest was an explanation of neolithic pottery making and tools as well as an excellent film and area devoted to rice cultivation. The galleries on textile making and basket weaving were among the most educational and comprehensive we had seen on these topics.Okumaya devam et

      Leaving The Philippines - Homeward Bound

      We said goodbye to the wonderful staff at Flower Island Resort and got the customary send off, they move the bar speaker down to the beach, pump up the volume and do a good bye dance as we pull away. The "boys" work hard on the island; balancing heavy loads such as suitcases and large water dispenser bottles on their shoulder while negotiating the slope of the boat ladder into the water depending on the height of the tide and then walking up the slope of the beach to the resort. The waves were pretty high getting to Palawan Island and then we had the 45 minute drive to get to El Nido, stopping briefly at a craft store along the way. We headed to Manila fie a brief two days on the way home. The flight to. Manila delayed due to wind - our first delaywd flight since the Wrstjet at the start, and on arrival our bags did not make it as it was fully booked and we noted some suitcases were quite large (likely filled with dive equipment). Grab to our hotel just inside the old Spanish walls (Intramuros area) and a nice dinner at the restaurant. Luggage caught up with us just after midnight. The next day Doug walked around Intramuros seeing the typical tourist sites and Nancy spent time picking up a few things at a local antique, art and craft store called Silahis which was very good. We then went to the SM Mall of Asia which is huge and Nancy bought a new gym bag to bring home her purchases. We had a final drink on the rooftop bar after a late check out as our plane does not leave until almost midnight to Tokyo; the first leg of a two and a half day trek back to Toronto via LA and Chicago.

      MUSINGS ON PHILIPPINES AND MANILA
      We found the Philippine people very respectful and pleasant. We were warned that Manila was not a big tourist draw and that walking around our area was not advisable after dark. Security checks at museums, the mall (carrying guns, they ask you to open and look in your bag, they no doubt need to do this to keep certain individuals out). We know there is significant poverty here and the common folk on Palawan are living very modestly but we did not get exposed to much of it during our short stay inthe tourist centre. City or country we are hoping the heat wave ends soon (highs in the mid 40s) and rain comes as it must be so hard on those who can not escape the heat.      Okumaya devam et

      Tag 17/18: Manila

      Was gibt es zu erzählen? :D
      Wir fuhren vom 100 Island National Park wieder zurück nach Manila.
      Der nächste Tag war relativ ungeplant und unser einziges Ziel war zunächst mal das Waschen unserer Wäsche 👍
      Durch Zufall bekamen wir mit, dass die beiden philippinschen Mädels (Kate & April) aus dem National Park auch in Manlia wohnten! Klein ist die Welt :D
      Wir verabredeten uns mit ihnen und verbrachten einen tollen Nachmittag mit den beiden besten Guides vor Ort :P ❤      Okumaya devam et

      Tag 29/30/31/32: Manila

      _Tag 29_
      Flug von Puerto Princesa wieder nach Manila :D zurück im Hostel in Downtown Manila. Den restlichen Tag verbrachten wir relativ entspannt und genossen das Großstadt-Feeling inklusive Sonnenuntergang am Abend 😍

      Shooppiiing 🤗 in der rieeesigen Mall of Asia.
      Nach dem erfolgreichen, aber anstrengenden Tag gingen wir mit unseren Philippinischen Freunden zum feiern und Bar-Hopping 🎉😊

      Etwas müde aber weiterhin motiviert besichtigen wir "Intramuros", einen historischen Stadtteil mit einem sehenswerten Rizal Museum, und den Chinesischen Friedhof (der eigentlich mehr einem Stadtteil gleicht als einem Friedhof 🤔).

      Letzter Tag auf den Philippinen!
      Packen, schreiben, lesen und noch einmal durch die uns mittlerweile bekannten Straßen Manilas schlendern...
      Wir besichtigten den Militärfriedhof, the "tomb of the unknown soldier" und besuchten gegen Abend das "Upside Down - Museum" - sehr cool aber sehr verwirrend 😂 und echt witzige Bilder!
      21 Uhr dann also unser Flug über Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) nach Chiang Mai (Thailand).      Okumaya devam et
