      I Yam What I Yam!

      It was a rainy and muddy walk thru
      the endless eucalyptus forest today, but I did find this great pic of Popeye! I Yam what I Yam, a pilgrim. After being drenched on the 26 km walk, I arrived here at a very nice donativo albergue run by a fellow pilgrim named Paul. He cooked a very good dinner for us all, and told us alot about Portugal. Only 20 km's for tomorrow.Read more

      A Sunny Day!

      I had to take it easy today, and only did 18 km's to Sao Joao da Madiera. The albergue here is very different. It is in a room in a wing of a hospital! I hope it is not an insane asylum, or I might not get out! It is called Santa Casa da Misericordia. Google it and somebody let me know. In 2 more days I will be in Porto.       Day 9–11

      AVEIRO

      April 9 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

      The bright sunshine and warmer temps made for a promising day on the Camino. However, things took an unexpected turn when the fine gravel turned to rough rocks and ruts; the inevitable happened - a flat tire. Fortunately, there was a spare tube replacement, and John, an experienced tire-changing expert, came to the rescue.

      Despite the setback, we continued, enjoying the ever-changing landscape interposed with quaint villages and the occasional pilgrim. While climbing a steep hill, I was halted again when the chain fell off. John continued on, too far off to hear my cry for help. In the distance on the hiking trail, I could hear pilgrims whistling to get his attention. Thankfully, he heard them and made his way back. A stick, the culprit this time.

      For the next hour, we bounced our way through a gorgeous but oddly quiet trail, except for the occasional bleating of a baby goat, and joked about things happening in threes. When we arrived at the next town, I looked down, and my phone was gone! It had popped off my Quad Lock, last location, 45 minutes ago. The chances of finding it were slim to none, but we decided it was worth the effort, especially given our protection thus far. I was less than enthusiastic to retrace our route through the rough cratered hills, but it had to be where it was lost. We asked two lone pilgrims to no avail. As I turned up the path, I heard John speaking to someone and could see one of the two women pull a phone from her sack. She found it!! The same two women who whistled a few hours earlier....our Camino angels, interceded no doubt by Our Lady of Fatima! She told us about losing her phone the year before on a Camino and recalled the dreaded feeling. She was determined to find the owner in the next alberge, but there could be no chance of finding us on our biking route. After the harrowing morning, we needed a nourishment break. We stopped at the next local Churrascaria and enjoyed a hearty lunch of meat, meat, and more meat, and reflected on the day's blessings.

      One of the best things about a Camino is getting to do it YOUR way. We decided to give the bikes and our bodies a break. Aveiro was the perfect place to do so.      Read more

      Day 25

      Letzter Tag in Portugal

      April 16 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

      Heute Nacht war es ziemlich kalt, etwa 11 Grad und morgens noch lange Nebel. Wir nutzen die Zeit zum kuscheln, Karten spielen, quatschen...herrlich so in den Tag hinein zu leben. Mittags geht es dann nach Aveiro, einer zuckersüßen Stadt, die ein bisschen was von Holland und Venedig hat. Auch hier gibt es wieder viele von den wunderschönen Mosaikhäusern. Wir kaufen letzte Souvenirs aus Portugal, bevor es am Nachmittag zum Leuchtturm und Strand geht. Kaum zu glauben, dass unsere Zeit in Portugal schon wieder zu Ende geht. Morgen geht's Richtung Spanien und die 5000 km Marke wird geknackt.Read more

      Day 18

      Day 15/4 Agueda to Albergaria a Nova

      We started our day at 7:00 in a light mist and 18°C. Not wet enough for rain gear, but humid enough to cover my glasses with water. Our plan was to do a short 16 km walk to Albergaria-a-Velha and then Uber to Aveiro to enjoy a better choice of restaurants and accommodations, because today was no ordinary day on the Camino. Today my lovely wife turns sixty!

      As soon as we left Agueda, the path took a sharp upward route and had us climbing up 75 meters in only 3/4 km. My companions, who tell me they've already contended with much worse, made the climb look easy. Me, not so much. Our first opportunity for coffee came only 4 kms into the walk, so we decided to move straight on to the next, only 7.6 kms away.

      As we passed through the little town of Mourisca, we were astounded by the size and beauty of some very old mansions along the way. Some were pristine, others need a little TLC and a couple were abandoned and in complete disrepair. One looked like it could have been lifted from a Hitchcock movie. We had to wonder why so much wealth was at one time drawn to this out of the way little burg.

      After Mourisca we were treated to a short time on an ancient Roman road, flanked on both sides by a completely intact stone wall. On one side was a beautiful pond dotted with lily pads and off in the distance, atop a hill, was the local place of worship.

      As we traversed a bridge, overlooking the landscape in the distance we couldn't help but admire nature's beauty, despite being partially shrouded in mist.

      Since our 7km coffee stop turned out to be non-existant, we continued on to the 10km mark where we finally succeeded in getting an infusion of very good, and very welcome, caffeine. While there, the group decided it would be a better idea to finish our day in Albergaria-a-Nova, 7.5 kms past our original destination. We arrived there at around 1:30, stopped for a quick celebratory pint and then Ubered into Aveiro, straight to Cha & Bolachas, where we had lunch. Brenda had found this little restaurant that offers vegan and gluten free options, so it was a must for her special day. Although we all wanted a light lunch, the different bruschetta plates we all ordered were very substantial and so good that our plates were virtually licked clean. Before leaving, we all ordered a slice of gluten free cake to take away to top off tonight's dinner.

      After checking in, we started the birthday celebrations with a bottle of Vinho Verde at The Iron Duke Pub. Champagne was in order, but when in Portugal...

      Dinner was at Food K'Ort, an Indian restaurant located a one minute walk from our hotel. The food was delicious, plentiful and served by the most entertaining waiter I can ever recall having. We topped off the meal, and the evening, with a resounding version of Happy Birthday, as much of the gluten free birthday cake as we could eat, and a complimentary glass of Brandy from the chef. And just as we were about to leave, Happy Birthday and an accompanying video began playing on the house TV.

      Gafanha da Boa Hora/Aveiro

      Wir sind wieder in Portugal! 🇵🇹😎
      Nachdem wir gestern in Santiago de Compostela genug Kultur getankt und alte Steine gesehen hatten, haben wir heute nur kurz einen Halt in Porto eingelegt: Einkaufstour durch den Decathlon (Wassersport) und den Continente (Vorräte auffüllen).
      Uns hat es danach an die Küste gezogen … gelandet sind wir heute in Aveiro. Der Stellplatz neben, dem schon geschlossenen, Aquapark „Vagasplash“ liegt sehr ruhig hinter den Dünen und man ist mit einigen Schritten am Meer.

      Gestreiftes Aveiro und Flamingos

      Juhuu, sonnig und warm! 😎
      Heute stand eine Radltour zu den bunt gestreiften Strandhäusern auf dem Plan .... einmal falsch abgebogen und wir haben schon einen Umweg von 15 km zurückgelegt. 🤪 Dafür sind wir durch ein Naturschutz- und Vogelgebiet geradelt und konnten eine Flamingo-Kolonie bewundern. War ja eigentlich geplant ... 😉😉Nach dem Ausflug in die Natur sind wir dann brav auf dem Radweg bis zu den gestreiften Häusern gestrampelt. Die muss man hier einfach gesehen haben.
      Da auch hier schon die Nachsaison begonnen hat, sind schon einige Restaurants geschlossen. Dafür tummeln sich hier nicht mehr die Massen, wie es in der Hauptsaison üblich ist.
      Am Abend wird nochmals gegrillt und morgen werden wir nach Peniche, ca. 150 km südlich, aufbrechen.

      55ème étape ~ Costa Nova

      Nous avons découvert un peu par hasard cette petite ville.
      La plage y est incroyable, du sable à perte de vue. Malheureusement, le temps n’était pas favorable à la baignade.
      Nous avons donc fait une jolie balade sur la plage puis dans la ville.
      Les maisons y sont vraiment atypiques, colorées et joyeuses.
      Petit arrêt au marché aux poissons pour acheter notre futur repas.      Read more

      Bummel durch die Lagunenstadt Aveiro 🚤

      Der Zwischenstopp in Aveiro hat sich gelohnt. Die Lagunenstadt ist auch bekannt als das "Portugiesische Venedig". Aber das fanden wir dann doch etwas übertrieben, nachdem wir (wie alle anderen Touristen auch) gleich in das erstbeste Boot 🚤 gesprungen sind und eine 45-minütige Rundfahrt durch die Kanäle gemacht haben 🤪. Von der Bootsfahrt waren wir etwas enttäuscht. Bis auf einen kleinen Streckenabschnitt führte sie durch wenig attraktive Gegenden.

      Viel schöner war es dann, noch etwas durch die Gassen des historischen Zentrums zu bummeln und die restaurierten Jugendstilhäuser und schön gefliesten Häuserfassaden zu bewundern.      Read more

      Praia de Vagueira 🤩

      Nach einem Bummel durch Aveiro und einem kurzen Stopp in Costa Nova mit seinen hübschen bunten Häuser landeten wir gestern auf einem 2 km südlich von Vagueira gelegenen Stellplatz direkt hinter den Dünen. Obwohl es bei unserer Ankunft regnete, waren wir vom ersten Augenblick an begeistert. Es stand nur ein weiteres Fahrzeug auf dem Platz und außer Wellenrauschen hörte man gar nichts. Einfach herrlich!

      Bei der Anmeldung hielt ich mit dem Betreiber ein kleines Schwätzchen, der sich sichtlich über diese Abwechslung freute. Ich erzählte ihm auf spanisch, dass ich seit wenigen Tagen portugiesisch lerne und das nahm er dankbar zum Anlass, ab sofort nur noch in seiner Muttersprache mit mir zu kommunizieren 😅.

      Wir gingen gespannt sofort hoch zur Düne und waren absolut geflasht, als wir den tollen Strand sahen. Leider war das Wetter für einen schönen Spaziergang zu regnerisch und stürmisch. Also ging es zurück in unser gemütliches Womo.

      Heute morgen wurden wir wie erwartet vom Prasseln des Regen geweckt. Eigentlich hatten wir uns gestern aufgrund des miesen Wetters entschieden weiterzufahren. Aber wir fanden es beide einfach zu schade, diese schöne Gegend bereits wieder zu verlassen und so entschieden wir uns spontan um. Ich finde es immer wieder schön, dass unsere gemachten Pläne nicht in Stein gemeißelt sind, sondern nach Lust und Laune geändert werden. Diese Freiheit genieße ich sehr 💃 und freue mich, dass wir da beide gleich ticken 😍.

      Wir warteten noch ein paar Stunden ab und unsere Geduld wurde belohnt. Die Sonne kam heraus und wir konnten noch einen wunderschönen Spaziergang durch die Dünen zum Nachbarort machen. Zurück ging es für mich dann direkt am Meer entlang.

      Absolut happy waren wir als sich der Himmel abends erneut aufklarte und wir dick eingemummelt einen schönen Sonnenuntergang auf der Terrasse der kleinen chilligen Strandbar erleben durften, die zu unserem Erstaunen zu dieser Jahreszeit noch offen hatte. Was für ein schöner Tag ❤.
