A night at the opera

Today we walked the streets of Lisbon, finding some caches, climbing hills, and negotiating the slippery slopes of the funicular paths (it drizzled for a while this morning).

We had no particular plan, but did stop for morning tea tarts, lunch, afternoon tea donuts... then squeezed dinner in before a visit to the opera... and finished with late night coffee and cakes. Thankfully Lisbon has plenty of hills to walk off all the food!

just up and down one hill - there's 3 funiculars in the city, to save walking up and down some of the steepest hills. But they won't save you money, they're 3.80 euro per trip (about 2 minutes)

North to Lisbon

We caught a taxi to the airport this morning for our 1.5 hour flight to Lisbon.

We caught the underground from the airport to our hotel, changing lines mid journey... and a surprisingly good price for an airport train - $2.66 each.

Our hotel is in a mostly pedestrian area in the centre of town, with trams trundling along many streets and a buzzing outdoor dining and cafe scene.

We bought a local SIM card and had a walk around the local area, picking up a few caches on the way.

Bek and Jake arrived late afternoon and we found an outdoor dining area near one of the main squares for dinner.Read more

Bom Dia! (Good day)

Lisbon is the Capital and largest city in Portugal. Historically, it was occupied by many groups over the centuries. Excluding prehistory, it was first occupied by Romans, the successively by successively by Sarmatians, Alans, Vandals, Germanic Suebi, Visigoths (who also ruled most of Spain), then of course the Moors.

Briefly between 1108 and 1111, Lisbonwas occupied by Norwegian Crusaders before getting taken back by the Moors. Then, the main event. In 1147, Lisbon was conquered by Alfonso I, who would later become the first King of Portugal.

Lisbon is known as the City of Seven Hills and walking around you'll soon find out why. The steepness of the streets were on par with Granada so it was probably good practice. The good news is that here there are trolleys and cable cars to ease your knees.

Along the waterfront, there are monuments to the past explorers of Portugal. Monasteries, Cathedrals and Museums are lined with beautiful tile works both inside and out. Lisbon has its own unique style and beauty.Read more

Azulejos (Tiles) of Portugal

The Azulejos of Portugal is a tradition that began from their Moorish ties. Muslim art is largely about geometric patterns, and that can be found in their art form "al zellij," which the Portuguese word derives. The earliest known Azulejos came from the 13th century.

Azulejos can be found on many buildings around Portugal. From cathedrals (inside and out), to archways, to simple apartment buildings, they can be quite beautiful. Enjoy our selection of tiles we've encountered.

Nach den ruhigen und sehr erholsamen Tagen in der Extrematura haben wir uns wieder ins Großstadtgetümmel getraut.
Hier tummeln sich bestimmt dreimal so viele Touristen wie bei unserem letzten Besuch im September, gefühlt sind es 10x so viel! 🫣🤪
Auch die Gruppen der Kreuzfahrtschiffe ziehen wieder durch Lissabon.
Nachdem wir uns nach der Fahrt quer durch Portugal unsere Füße in der City und am Ufer des Tejo vertreten haben, sind wir wieder einmal im Time Out Market gelandet…. köstlich wie immer! 😋😋Read more

Left Porto and took a 3 1/2 hr bus to Lisbon. Public transportation in Europe is pretty amazing - Trains and buses are really nice and comfortable. The drive thru the country was very “normal”. It almost reminded me of portions of the Eugene to Wilsonville drive. Lots of greenery, farmland and hills in the distance.

We arrived later in the afternoon so didn’t have a chance to see much - just headed out by foot to find dinner and saw a little of the city. Will see much more over the next couple of days.

Lisbon is REALLY hilly - even more so than Porto. To me it feels reminiscent of old town San Francisco. There is a large suspension bridge over the ocean that gives me the feels of the golden gate - and all the hills and trams going up and down take me back to the days of riding cable cars as a child visiting family in San Francisco.Read more

Lisbon, is a beautiful city, with so many things to see and experience. We drove across that bridge on our way to the furthest point on the Atlantic Ocean where we stayed for a few days in Algarve.

Wir haben heute das letzte Mal für die komplette Reise bis Februar die Möglichkeit gehabt, am Abend das Schiff zu verlassen, da wir bis morgen Nachmittag in Lissabon bleiben. Die letzte "Overnight" überhaupt musste selbstverständlich ausgekostet werden.
So ging es in die berühmte Pink Street mit rosafarbenen Straßenbelag um zu feiern. Auch durfte ein nächtlicher Snack bestehend aus den köstlichen portugiesischen Backwaren "Pasteis de Nata" nicht fehlen!Read more
