      First Night Dinner

      Back in Bucharest and only off the plane and straight into the old town for dinner. We headed to Caru’ cu Bere… it was recommended by Hannah’s Romanian friend in L’pool and it was absolutely fantastic. The food was great, the music was good and the dancing was lovely to watch.Lue lisää

      Palace of Parliament

      Another day discovering Bucharest, this time by bike. We were walking toward the Old Town and came across the outdoor office of a bike hire company and discovered that a half day bike tour had just departed. He offered us a discounted price and we could catch up with them at their first stop, so we paid our money, chose our bikes and headed off with another guide to join the tour.

      We toured the Old Town, followed by the Jewish Quarter, a gypsy neighbourhood and Antims Chuch, which was relocated in one piece about 200m to make way for Communist style housing blocks.

      The highlight of the tour was the Palace of Parliament, the second largest administration building in the world (after The Pentagon), and the heaviest building in the world. For its construction, 7 square kilometres of the old city centre was demolished, with 40,000 people being relocated. It has 8 levels underground and 20km of tunnels linking it to other government offices. Of the 3000 rooms, 70% are still empty.

      We rode back to the centre of town to Revolutionary Square, site of Ceausescu's last speech before he escaped the city by helicopter from the rooftop (he was captured later that day and executed live on TV 2 days later).

      We had late lunch in the old town, grabbed some caches and dinner, then returned to our apartment to watch the UEFA Champions League final in Romanian!      Lue lisää

      Jour 19 : Bucarest

      Première étape, le parlement Bucarest. Le bâtiment est complètement délirant puisqu'il est énorme, 86 m de haut, 1100 pièces, estimé à 3 milliards d'euros ... C'est réellement un gigantesque bloc de granit dans la ville (1 million de tonnes utilisé) ! C'est le plus grand bâtiment administratif du monde après le Pentagone. Il a été voulu par le dictateur communiste Ceaușescu, exécuté par la révolution roumaine de 1989. Le bâtiment fut achevé après. Il a fallu exproprier 40 000 personnes pour bénéficier de l'espace nécessaire à sa construction. Au final l'ensemble est tellement gigantesque qu'il en paraît un peu vide. On peut sentir que la ville a largement souffert du communisme 30 ans plus tôt : plusieurs bâtiments de la vieille ville sont partiellement détruits ou délabrés, les façades sont sales et peu entretenues ... Bucarest ne fait pas bonne impression au premier abord. Elle a été connue pour être la petite sœur de Paris, à vrai dire on cherche encore un peu pourquoi.Lue lisää

      2. Tag - Bukarest erkunden

      Heute gings erstmal zu Fuß durch die Stadt. Wir starteten mit einem Rundgang um den Palatul Parlamentului, der auch Palast des Volkes genannt wird. Das zweitgrößte Gebäude der Welt nach dem Pentagon mit 3000 Räumen und einer jährlichen Stomrechnung von ca. 1,7 Mio euro🤣. Eine Führung haben wir uns gespart, aber es gab eine kleine kostenfreie Kunstausstellung die wir uns angeschaut haben. Danach ging es durch den Cismigiu Park. Leider war in den Seen im Park kein Wasser.. Wegen irgendwelchen Baustellen... das kennen wir ja von Stuttgart😂. Also weiter zum nationalen Kunstmuseum, der Regenschirmgasse und zum Königspalast von Bukarest. Anschließend wollten wir ins flippermuseum und mit einem Sessellift ins Grüne fahren... bis sich herausgestellt hat, dass ich ausversehen Sehenswürdigkeiten aus Budapest in meiner Liste abgespeichert habe.... 11h fahrt sind leider zu weit für einen Besuch lm flippermuseum, also wurde das leider nichts 😅. Wir sind dann weiter zu einem riesigen Markt mit Obst, Gemüse und allem möglichen Schnickschnack (obor Market) war genau nach Alex' Geschmack. Hier habe wir uns noch einen Kaffee und einen Oreo kaffee gegönnt, bei dem der Besitzer extra einen rumänischen Witz auf den Becher geschrieben hat, den er uns erstmal noch erklären musste .... war dann in etwa so: "hab meine Waage in den Schrank einengeschlossem, bis sie sich bei mir entschuldigt" .. Eine ziemliche kalorienbombe also🤣. Im Anschluss haben wir kurz Pause in unserem Apartment gemacht. Abends waren wir noch essen in einem schönen Restaurant an einer Passage direkt am Fluss. Essen war sehr gut, lecker Risotto und Schnitzel 😄 jetzt geht's dann in Bett. Morgen steht ein langer Tag an. Haben einen Busausflug nach Brasov und zum Drakula Schloss gebucht.Lue lisää

      Palastumwanderung dank Simon

      290 Kilometer, 10 Stunden unterwegs

      Nun müssen wir erstmal was essen gehen. Wir haben beide Bärenhunger. Was bietet sich da besser an als der Biergarten eines Fleischers, der direkt auf unserer Route liegt. Mit den großen Portionen werden wir beide ordentlich satt. Als es ans Bezahlen geht, stellt sich heraus, dass keine Kartenzahlung möglich ist. Bargeld haben wir natürlich auch noch nicht, da wir gerade über die Grenze kommen. Also muss Anni peinlicherweise noch mal zum nächsten Automaten fahren, während ich dort warte. Zum Glück waren wir nicht ganz aus der Welt. Also konnte es bald weitergehen.

      In Bukarest angekommen haben wir nicht viel Zeit. Da dort der größte Parlamentspalast (365.000 m² Wohnfläche) der Welt steht, entschied ich, dass wir uns den mal anschauen. Nicht bedacht habe ich natürlich, dass man da nicht mal eben rundherum laufen kann. Das dauerte über eine Stunde und war nicht die beste Entscheidung. Naja, passiert eben mal.

      Direkt neben unserem Parkplatz befindet sich auch eine riesige Baustelle. Man renoviert hier eine riesige Kirche mit brandneuen Kuppeln aus edlem Metall. Bei genauerer Recherche finden wir heraus, dass es darüber sehr kontrovers zugeht. Die einen finden, dass erst Krankenhäuser, Schulen und Straßen gebaut werden sollten, bevor man sein Geld da rein steckt und für andere ist es genau richtig so.

      Das war es schon mit dem kleinen Abstecher am Rande der Stadt. Beim Rausfahren kommen wir in den Feierabendstau. Nun befinden wir uns auf dem Weg zum Transfăgărășan. Das ist ein wunderschöner Pass über die Karpaten. Vorher besorgen wir uns bei Lidl Verpflegung und Anni befragt die Mitarbeiter. Trotz Sprachproblemen verstanden wir, dass Lidl auch hier ein guter Arbeitgeber ist. Bei der Suche nach unseren Schlafplätzen lesen wir über Sichtungen von Bären und Anni ist natürlich sofort übermotiviert. Leider ist der nächste potentielle Schlafplatz wegen der Bärenaktivitäten gesperrt. Schade!

      So fahren wir ein paar Meter hoch und suchen uns dort ein Plätzchen. Bei der Kälte und etwas Feuchtigkeit von oben, essen wir unser Abendbrot im Auto. Anni streut dann Brot ums Auto, damit wir nachts nicht so alleine sind. Sie will wohl testen ob hier viele Tiere aktiv sind. Dabei hat sie bloß leider nicht an einen möglichen nächtlichen Toilettengang gedacht. Die Tiere sind nämlich definitiv aktiv und der Toilettengang wird ein unheimliches Abenteuer.      Lue lisää

      Bucharest..Final Stop

      Left Constanta in a bus for a 2.5 hour drive to Bucharest. Long day. When we arrive in the Capital City we have lunch and then off on a city tour. Check into the JW MARRIOTT and then a Sights and Flavors of Bucharest dinner at 630p until 10p. Busy last 2 days.

      Lengthy bus ride but well worth it, as we arrived safely in Bucharest. Too many things to describe, but the Palace of the Parliament is truly the biggest building I have ever seen in my life. So impressive. It is now the home to interpole as well as a national museum. And it is apparently only about 30% completed .The National Cathedral is also something to behold as is their monument to their world war I soldiers, and their impersonation of the Arche de Triomphe.
      Back in 1977 they had a 7.6 earthquake that caused a lot of trouble in the city. Their 1989 revolution which got rid of communism and their dictator, Nicole Ceausescu was another constant talking point. He and his wife were killed by a firing squad on December 25th, 1989 the exact same day that they were captured after fleeing the capital.

      The Royal Palace of Charles. The First is the photograph that has the statue of the horse in front of it. The church that is pictured was built in 1599.

      The day was capped off with a tour called, The Sights and Flavors of Bucharest. It ended up being a beautiful evening with stops at three different locations for appetizers, the next place for the main course, and the final place for dessert. I tried to take pictures of all.

      We are already looking forward to our day tomorrow, without a wake up call without a planned tour, just wandering the streets of Bucharest.      Lue lisää

      The House of the People

      We also visited the Romanian Parliament.
      Built by Nicolae Ceausescu to show his power. It’s the heaviest building in the world and the second biggest in surface. It’s been built only with Romanian materials: tons and tons of stone, marble, glass, gold, wood…
      A whole neighbourhood was destroyed in order to build it and underneath it there’s as many floors as outside.
      Only 20% of the building is in use, and most of it is just empty chambers.      Lue lisää

      Palace of the Parliament

      First stop on the trip was the Palace of the Parliament. One of the largest buildings in the world, and the heaviest, it was built by the communist party, particularly the dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. However, the government was overthrown and communism removed before the building was finished. Some of the communist elements remain, such as two large stair cases which was made purely for the leader and his wife to walk down. Our tour lasted well over an hour and in that time we only saw around 4% of the building.Lue lisää

      Barkarest….Walkies!

      Today was time to explore this grand city, starting with a Bolt to our meeting point: a Civitatis walk with Edward.

      Naturally the first Bolt failed to appear, but when we summoned another, we found him parked literally next to where we were standing 🤣. He finished his orange, and off we went.

      Edward was a very entertaining guide: so much history and architectural knowledge shared, explaining the ‘why’, as well as truth v myth…. culminating in the fall of Ceauşescu….& indeed the reasons he was declare guilty after just one hour of hearing (the Soviets, removing him before he could spill the beans on them, since you asked!)

      We met another fella, Ivan, plus another couple from the Older Interrailers…and a very enthusiastic lady from Dallas, Heddy!
      The tour ran for almost 3 hours, and he certainly earned his tips 👍

      We decided to go for lunch at a local place he recommended, Bodega "La Mahala". There, we felt surrounded by locals - a great decision….& a most disgraceful doughnut/cherry/cream dessert for an extra sugar boost. We only ordered one, but clearly something got lost in translation 👀

      A long and hot walk around the immense Palace of Parliament & the very quaint "Saint John Chrysostom" church was followed by a much needed cuppa at the beautiful galleried Carusel Café.

      That revitalised us for the final walk home….only broken by a dog leaping out and trying to bite me at the Revolution Square 😱

      Didn’t get through my walking trousers, & the owner was in tears….she explained he was a rescue dog, fully vaccinated. Despite my swearing profusely at the time, I suspect he was just surprised by my appearance and perhaps felt I was attacking her 🤷‍♂️
      We relaxed and continued home, shattered after another 20k step day.      Lue lisää
