      Labrador Nature Reserve and swimming

      Long walk around Singapore (south west) to the coast and Labrador Nature Reserve where old armourments and relics of the British occupation are now overgrown with forest. Looks out to the sea and the original port entrance, now flanked by container ports and looks out to sea at hundreds of container ships. Also attempted swimming at the Jurong East complex complete with wave pool and water slides, thwarted after an hour when the lighting started....... Finished up with a quick wander through China Town, buying some metal chopsticks for on the go snacking!Read more

      Fingers crossed

      So with a 3rd time visit to the Embassy today I'm hoping it's going to be 3rd time lucky. I arrive to the station early only to find I have left my travel card over the end of the bed. Not a good start, but I am so determined today I don't even think a Thai army could stop me. I arrive at the embassy at it is packed at 925 even though it doesn't open till 10 but I take my ticket and a seat and wait accordingly. I really feel sorry for the girls here as its seems very hard to actually have the right paperwork and as I sit here people become very irritated saying they have done everything properly. A German guy refuses to leave and keeps taking another ticket going back to a different window. When I get served it's with the same lady and she advises me I will need to reapply. I explain I'm supposed to leave on Friday and after going away comes back and says the Thai embassy will accept it but the airline might not. I can't take that chance and once again fill in the Thai pass application which this time only takes me an hour or so and says if its not back by Thursday I should go back to the Embassy. The stress of sitting it out is a nightmare but as I'm leaving the Thai embassy my new pass comes through saying I'm departing from Singapore. I'm so happy 😊 I've arranged to meet a few guys ar Sentosa tonight and I board the vivo express again . I arrive a little early but manage a quick cigarette. Dave turns up with a few of the crew and we make a short walk down to the ola beach front bar which has its own pool (dave never said to bring a swimming costume) not to be left out I go and purchase a cossy and sit sharing food and beer towers. We are now a group of about 13 and the rules of 5 mean we have to sit on different tables. Sasi comes over to join the boys and I take my opportunity to introduce myself to the girls. Most of my trip has been spent with men and tge girls welcome me in with open arms which is such a breath of fresh air spending time with a bunch of inspirational ladies . We all exchange our stories, and I'm sat with zoo keepers to art physcotherapists to I.t professional. Cynthia even has a specialist party trick of being able to climb trees. We celebrate our independence with jager bombs and the boys treat us to a bottle of bubbly Last orders at the bar come far too soon and its not goodbye its till we meet again. with only having had a few snacks, me and a couple of the guys head for something to eat at a hotel run by Sasi. The hotel employs kids with special needs , training them in all aspects. The service is better tha Raffles. Its an eco friendly hotel and being in a prime location I love the fact they are giving them an opportunity. Its been a perfect day and the longer I stay the more I don't want to leave. We finish the evening with Soju similar to sake and feeling well oiled arrive home.Read more

      Bird Park und Feuerwerk

      Ausschlafen, wir haben ja schließlich Urlaub. Danach frühstücken wir nicht, sondern nehmen auf der Terrasse unser Frühstück ein. Es gibt asiatische Köstlichkeiten, in Bananenblätter eingeschlagen. Dazu Mangosaft und kolibriartige Vögel, die vor uns rumschwirren. Die anderen Gäste haben dicke Kameras dabei und knipsen die Vögel.

      Mit Vögeln geht es weiter. Wir besuchen den Singapur Bird Park. Ein wunderbar angelegter Park, in dem Vögel neben klassischen Volieren auch in riesigen Freiflug-Gehegen beobachtet werden können, in denen man rumlaufen kann. In einem Gehege kann man kleinere Papageien mit Honigwasser füttern - daher sind sie extrem zutraulich. Wir haben kein Honigwasser, sie klettern aber auch auf uns herum und lecken das Salz von der Haut.

      Danach fahren wir nach Clarke Caye, dem historischen Zentrum von Singapur, wo alles begann. Heute ist hier eine Bar an der anderen und vor den meisten sitzen Menschentrauben mit Bier und schauen American Football (Lisa klärt auf: es muss Rugby gewesen sein) , Singapur gegen Neuseeland. Jubel brandet bei jeder Aktion.

      Per Boot lassen wir uns über den Singapore River an allen Sehenswürdigkeiten vorbei schippern. Das dreibeinige Marina Bay Sands Hotel, das Kunstmuseum in Form einer Lotosblüte und die atemberaubende Skyline des Finanzdistrikts.

      Danach haben wir Hunger. Gierige Schlepper wollen uns in ihre Restaurants zerren, aber wir steuern ein Hawker-Center an. Es gibt wirklich alle Küchen der Welt zur Auswahl. Sogar Costa Rica wäre im Angebot gewesen. Christiane wählt Entenbrust beim Chinesen, Frank das singapurianische Nationalgericht Laksa, eine scharfe Nudelsuppe (eher ein Eintopf) mit Kokosmilch, Chilli und diversen Einlagen. Schmeckt köstlich. Als zweiten Gang gibt es Satay, die in einer eigenen Straße vor dem Hawker-Center gebrutzelt werden. 10xRind, 10xHuhn, dazu die typische süßliche Satay-Sauce.

      Jetzt sind wir bereit für den Top-Act des Abends: Feuerwerk in Marina Bay am Vorabend eines Nationalfeiertags. Rund um die Bay geht schon die Post ab: eine vollbesetzte Tribüne, eine Band spielt in einer Party-Zone und Familien sitzen auf Decken und picknicken. Fotografen belagern die besten Plätze. Kampfflugzeuge der Armee fliegen donnernd Parade und Hubschrauber tragen die Flagge spazieren. Salutschüsse ertönen. Um den Vielvölkerstaat zusammenzuhalten, legt Singapur großen Wert auf nationale Symbolik. Sogar das Wetter feiert: ein Regenbogen steht am Horizont. Langsam wird es dunkel und kurz nach acht knallen die Böller und Fontänen vor atemberaubender Kulisse.

      Aber ganz klar: mit dem Wurstmarkt kann das Feuerwerk hier nicht mithalten.      Read more

      Zurück nach Singapur

      Heute klingelt mal wieder der Wecker. Wir genießen unsere Luxus-Suite (für 50,- €!) und die Outdoor-Dusche. Für Frühstück ist es zu früh, der Fahrer steht pünktlich bereit. Bob ist extra früh aufgestanden, um uns zu verabschieden. Die zwei Haus-Fledermäuse schwirren uns um die Ohren.

      Am Morgen ist das Bali-Verkehrsgewühl noch nicht da. Am Flughafen bekommen wir in Made's Warung das bisher beste Frühstück. Mit Mangosaft (eher ein Mango-Smoothie, genial) ! Kaffee wie gemalt, dazu würziges Nasi oder Mie Goreng und Früchte.

      Dann geht es im Eisflieger von AirAsia, dem asiatischen Ryanair an Java entlang mit schönem Blick auf die Vulkane nach Singapur. Frank in Regenjacke gegen die Kälte; was anderes war nicht im Rucksack. Der Hotel-Fahrer holt uns ab und fährt uns quer durch Singapur. Plötzlich stoppt er an einer Tankstelle und fragt: "Hotel Villa Samadhi?". Offensichtlich weiß er nur den Namen. Da Franks Navi-App startbereit ist, navigieren wir ihn mit deutscher Navigation und unserer Simultan-Übersetzung durch Singapur - und kommen zuverlässig an.

      Die Villa Samadhi ist eine renovierte Villa aus der Kolonialzeit. Man fühlt sich 100 Jahre zurück versetzt. Alles sehr stilvoll eingerichtet. Sie liegt in einem mit dichten Urwald bewachsenen Park an der Südküste von Singapur - kein Stadttrubel, nur Wald. Zur MRT (der U-Bahn) sind es aber nur 10 Minuten zu Fuß. Zum Frühstück geht es auf einem Steg durch den Wald zum Nachbarhotel Tamarind Hill. Dort gibt es heute ab 18:00 kostenlose Cocktails. Danach gehen wir dort essen, weil Christiane die Klimaanlagen-Grippe hat und nicht hawker-centerfähig ist.

      Es lohnt sich! Wunderbare Thai-Küche. Highlights sind ein scharfer Salat aus grünen Mangos mit viel Koriander und pfannengerührte Entenbrust mit Tamarindenglasur. Dazu natürlich Wasserspinat.

      Über den beleuchteten Dschungelpfad laufen wir schließlich wieder runter in die Villa Samadhi.      Read more

      Mount Faber und Sentosa Island

      Tagesziel ist Sentosa Island vor den Toren der Stadt. Eine Seilbahn bringt uns zuerst auf den Mount Faber und dann direkt durch ein Haus hindurch und über einen der weltweit größten Häfen schwebend, auf die Spaßinsel Sentosa.
      Die Insel ist ein riesiger Freizeitpark, der immer weiter ausgebaut wird. Allerdings zahlt man keinen Eintritt, sondern jede Attraktion einzeln. Das ist gut für uns, denn wir wollen den Tag heute einfach nur verbummeln. Kurz überlegen wir aber, in den Wasserpark zu gehen, denn aus der Gondelbahn sah er richtig doll verlockend aus!!! Aber 40 Singapur-Dollar sind uns dann doch zu teuer. Also nehmen wir einen Bus und ein Bähnchen (fahren kostenlos auf der Insel umher) und fahren an den Strand. Das macht auch Spaß und hier sind wir fast alleine.      Read more

      Sentosa Island

      Sentosa Island is beautiful. I had read online that it's not really worth visiting, but I think they're wrong! Maybe the beaches won't be as nice as Thailand, but I was impressed. There's a separate train line dedicated to Sentosa and we got off at the end of the line, at the beaches. It's amazing! So pretty, and quiet. I suppose it's not hot season here, but for us we were very happy to put our feet in the water. I didn't bring a bathing suit with me as I'd heard the water wasn't all that clear this time of year, but it looked just fine to me. Too bad! But, I have Thailand for swimming ;) We walked along the beaches for a while just enjoying the peace and quiet, exploring, and talking. At some point we stopped and grabbed some fresh fruit juice. I tried something called "Badung" that was bright pink and very sweet, and tasted kind of like taro. Was interesting! While exploring the beaches we met a couple from America/Canada that we talked with for a while. The first Canadian I've met on this trip! And he's from Ladner. Small world indeed. Too bad they leave tonight or we likely would have met up for drinks later.

      Anyway, after we tired of walking the beaches, enjoying the views, and exploring the little islands connected by bridges, we hopped onto the train and got off at a different stop, still on Sentosa Island though. This area was still very vast, open, and impressive, but wasn't field with beaches. There was a huge statue of a Merlion that we took photos of and there's also a Universal Studios! We didn't go into the theme park because neither of us was interested, but it made me think of a few people at home that would be interested in it.

      When we finally got too tired to walk anymore we hopped back on the train and returned to the hostel. There I did some laundry - boy is it nice not to have to hand wash things! - and we sat around for a while relaxing. At some point we made friends with a girl from Switzerland, Lu, who's here only for one night on a layover. The three of us decided to adventure to Clarke Quay to find food at the absurd hour of 9:30 pm. That was an adventure to be told in another post ;)      Read more

      So ihr lieben🙋🏼, das war's ! Wir sind wieder gut in Frankfurt gelandet..👍🏼

      Zum Abschluss gibt es nochmal die letzten Fotos aus Singapur. Traumhaft schöne Stadt und auch der ganze Urlaub war super schön! Als wir noch da waren, war gerade der Formel 1 Grand Prix in Singapur. ❤️

      Uns geht es gut, wir warten jetzt noch auf unseren Zug nach Leipzig. Und dann müssen wir erstmal wieder lange Klamotten rausholen 😝      Read more

      Baden im Meer

      Durch die geografische Lage direkt am Äquator bewegt sich das Thermometer im Tagesverlauf und über das gesamte Jahr hinweg nur geringfügig.
      Während unseres gesamten Aufenthalt hat es nicht einmal geregnet. Wir hatten immer so um die 30 Grad und es war gut auszuhalten, weil es immer einen angenehmen Wind gab. Die auf gefühlt 5 Grad eingestellten Klimaanlagen in jedem Gebäude/Bus/MRT haben mich ein wenig genervt.
      Die Wassertemperaturen sind zwischen 25 und 30 Grad, also sehr angenehm zum Baden.      Read more

      Southernmost Point of Continental Asia

      This islet is linked to Palawan Beach by a simple suspension bridge. It has two lookout towers, and there is a sign on the islet erected by the Sentosa Development Corporation declaring that it is the "southernmost point of Continental Asia". This may be disputed on the ground that the islet is not part of Continental Asia, as it is only linked to Sentosa by a bridge. (Sentosa itself is connected to the main island of Singapore by a causeway, and Singapore is in turn linked to Peninsular Malaysia by two causeways. In addition, another beach on Sentosa called Tanjong Beach is further south than the islet.)Read more
