      O Coto to A Salceda 17.5km 4.5 hrs

      12. oktober 2023, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

A beautiful walk through Eucalyptus forests. The smell was incredible. We met up with a lovely couple from Germany and we walked a good part of the day with them. We both find that the walk goes by so quickly when you have new people to talk to. We are staying at a nice little albergue where we met up with ladies from England, Brazil and Holland. We all ventured across the street for dinner where we were joined by others from Uruguay and Germany. The one guy from Germany started in Germany in July and has walked over 3000km. Makes us feel like we are just doing a stroll around the block.
It’s exciting because Santiago is now in everyone’s reach. Some are planning on getting there tomorrow and others like us will get there Saturday. Some of our friends have arrived already and sending us pictures. So nice to see.
Tomorrow looks like it will be a very rainy day so not looking forward to that. We have been very lucky with the weather so far.

      More people

      23. august 2022, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

The two girls in the photo with me, Elena and Yolanda, plus 2 others who were travelling alone, got together in the garden of a bar on the Camino.
When they saw other pilgrims passing, they asked them to join for a drink.
The group got bigger and bigger, there was singing and dancing, and everyone had a bit of fun.
The group was already quite large when Jan and I arrived.
Most were young Spaniards who started the walk in Sarria. This shows the different mindset of the 4-day walkers as opposed to most people who do a longer pilgrimage. One group is there to have fun, the other is searching for inner peace. This is obviously a gross generalisation, but you get the idea.
The demographic of the Camino undoubtedly changed after Sarria, and albergues in many villages were full.
For this reason, in the last 110k of the walk we had to book ahead. For the same reason, we completed this section a day earlier than originally expected- to avoid the hassle of ringing around to find a bed for an extra day.

      The plan

      23. august 2022, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

So, what to do with 9 spare days?
There's an obvious answer: continue walking to Finisterre and Muxía. These are official pilgrimage routes as well. If I keep walking at the current rate, I can even walk back to Santiago and complete 1,000 kms.
      That's my next challenge! 😀

Day 28 Melide to Salcema 604 km

      20. oktober 2023, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

I must apologize as I did complete the Primitivo however I am continuing to walk. I am not completely finished walking yet. I am now on the Camino Francis route to Santiago 27 km away but I am doing it in 2 days as I have had some rather hard days.

Pouring with rain this morning so there are not many pictures.

It did stop off and on and gradually improved towards the afternoon.

I can't believe how many bars are on this section
There are so many more pilgrims. The atmosphere is different. Some people don't even say "Hola" when you great them🤔

The landscape is so flat now. I walked by an active logging site:
Falling, removing branches, decking and loading. Unsure of the type of trees as it was dark.
      Very interesting.

Beautiful scents from the eucalyptus trees.

I saw my first pilgrim with a dog walking. It barked excessively at me..... The owner said it was a lovely rescue dog that sometimes does that to people🧐 It was part blue heeler so no surprise.

I am staying at an Albergue that I stayed at last year. It is close to the restaurant with the excellent food. I met Stacey from Maine and Denise from the Hamburg area, and we went out for a fantastic dinner. Fresh scallops and the best salad with goat cheese I have had in Spain yet👏🥳 Delicious!!

2 more sleeps until Santiago. It will be so fun as Denise, Stacey and I will see Mass together on Sunday. The botafumeira will be used.

      Arzúa to O Pedrouzo

      7. mai, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

488 miles done. 12 miles left.

Beautiful sunny day walking through shaded woods and meandering through the far suburbs of Santiago de Compostela. Very short day at only 12 miles, but it was fantastic after the past 12 days of longer walks since the last rest day.

I was looking for lunch when I found, on Google, a Mexican restaurant in this little town!! Hallelujah! Those nachos I’ve been craving… found! And I rewarded myself with a proper margarita as well. So so good. Talked with the owner, a young guy from Mexico City, who decided to open this restaurant with his sister after believing together that pilgrims might be tired of the same bland pilgrims menus offered along the Camino and might seek out something different than the norm. They were right, at least in regard to my own cravings and business investment sentiment. Instead of a typical ink stamp at the restaurant, I received a legit wax stamp (los muertos inspired) sprinkled with glitter!

I had a second margarita that kicked in as I walked to my albergue and soon after I checked in and showered, I collapsed in bed and took a 3-hour nap.

I wandered around the town, enjoyed a kas limon and whiskey cocktail while people watching, then went to a restaurant for an empanada and cheesecake (with Galician wine of course).

Early to bed because I’m gonna hit the road early in order to beat the trail traffic of other pilgrims. Santiago de Compostela tomorrow!!!

Today’s Spanish word of the day is Bonito (bon-ee-toe) which means pretty just like the flowers we saw were Bonito.

Hope you have a good day

      Lavacolla from Tabernavella

      9. juli 2023, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

Relatively gentle day, our last 'full' walk of 24.5km.... which seems remarkably easy compared to how it felt 40-something days ago. The human body is remarkable for its adaptability. The human mind is remarkably adaptable as well, but I think that's another post.

The views and forests continue to inspire smiles but not so much to inspire photos, it seems. I only took a few, but I promise: it was lovely.

The weather was delightfully cool and breezy with scattered clouds: perfect for a quick stroll. We had fun.

Update on "we": somewhere along the way Bruce and I combined with Jaime, Klara, Jayne, and Angelique of UK, Germany, USA and The Netherlands. We had some stalkers from Texas for a while but they noped out yesterday and leapt ahead to Santiago to luxuriate in an AirBnB instead of our humble albergue tonight. Can't blame 'em. We hope to share some cheer tomorrow.

Highlight of today was stopping in the woods to listen to a beautiful voice echoing through the valley. A lone man was walking along the road- possibly a Pilgrim, maybe not- and singing opera at full volume. I was tickled by how impressive his vocal power is, and accompanied by birdsong and morning light filtering through the trees it was a moving experience for me.

We also enjoyed two solid breakfasts, some pretty doors, amazing flowers, plenty of laughs, and meeting a few other pilgrims now that various Camino routes have converged.

It has been a good day.

      Salcede

      14. oktober 2019, Spania ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

      Regen regen regen,

      From Melide to Azura!!

      14. juni 2023, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Ahhh was yesterday a dream! We started heading to Azura from Melide. Walking through the forest. It was absolutely beautiful. Per usual, we got Betsy up and ready for the day then took a taxi into the forest where we will be walking. It was breathtaking. Betsy held up. Even though it was pretty hot, we’ve been keeping her plenty hydrated and she’s been doing great!! We got our stamps and kept going. We took a short break once we got to Azura and had some lunch, took a taxi to Hotel Azura and decided to finish for the day. We then met up with Mark, Joanne, Clayton, and Amy for some dinner. We some paella and caramel crème cake. There was a restaurant down the street from our hotel which worked out perfectly 👌🏾 it was a great day indeed!!Les mer
