      Train into Astorga

      16 april, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

We got ourselves to the train station early. We had walked around with our backpacks and day bags, and I”m feeling that extra weight in my hips and knees. We both needed a day of rest and recovery.

We just had that strong feeling that it was time to get out of the city and return to the Camino in nature.

I fell asleep on the train immediately, lulled by the rocking and the fields of yellow something going by. We passed many industrial areas, and a wind turbine farm.

My thoughts and dreams turned to my home, my children and how they are (not?) getting along. To my suburban cats who have no predators but the risks of old age (Sophie) and extra flappy flaps (Maeven). To my fortunate and rich life with good friends, good health insurance and a wonderful family.

We passed through the towns along the Camino that take weeks for pilgrims on foot. Logroño, Burgos, Leon. Looking across the flat, dry Meseta, I feel lucky again that we are foregoing this Herculean marathon of walking to fast forward instead to Astorga, where we start the climb back into mountains and eventually into Galicia.

One of the places we are looking forward to is the Iron cross, where pilgrims ascend a very long and steep mountain, then symbolically set down a stone to represent laying down a burden. We both brought stones from home. And what those stones represent may change daily as we continue our Camino.

I am so grateful that I got to study Spanish at such an intense level. I don’t use it much in my daily life at home, but being emerged in it again opens up an inner cache of vocabulary, grammar (remember pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo?), and dichos I didn’t know that I knew.

Now that we are a week in, with two weeks to go, it’s easier to shift into the rhythm of the day. wake up early (what? Lydia wake up early??) and have whatever breakfast we have set aside from the market before. Hopefully the laundry is dry. Our goal is set out in time to walk with the sunrise.

What I enjoy the most, tho, is monotasking. Being present. Talking with Paul about details of where we are and where we are going, or deeper topics of life, process and introspection. Pausing to listen to the sound of the birds, or the babbling brook, or to take a breather while other pilgrims with their full travel packs pass us.

Astorga turns out to be a beautiful little town with amazing palace and cathedral, nestled into the daily hustle of the community. I’m in awe and humbled.

Paul found us a lovely hotel that costs the same as 2 beds In a hostel. Clean, beautiful, with a little balcony looking over the square, where people are having dinner and connecting well into the evening. Watch the video with sound on.

The bathroom even has dual seating for the closest of couples. JK

Tomorrow we start our walk before the sunrise, and will see these buildings in their predawn glory. We have many hilly days ahead of us. And I’m grateful for it!

      3 april, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

I took the bus from Leon to Astorga. I arrived early so was able to have time to walk around.

Saw the Gaudi Palace. It looks like a castle out of Disney.

Sunny day. Leaving tomorrow to walk to Rabanal. I am very excited.Meer informatie

      Astorga

      30 september 2022, Spanje ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

Bused to Astorga today. We'll start walking again tomorrow. We spent time exploring the cathedral before eating lunch.
At lunch, I met some people that I had not seen since the first 3 days. It was awesome to catch up.
In the late afternoon we visited the Gaudi Palace. The outside looks like a Disney princess palace to me.

Day 2: Hospital de Orbigo to Astoga

      7 april, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Had a slight delay this morning. Took the bus from Leon to Hospital de Orbigo to start our walking. Instead of going straight there we took a detour and went to a random Hospital in Leon on the city bus.
All good. We overcame that obstacle and just got there a little later.
Five minutes after starting we met Bea and Gus from Philadelphia.
We had some trail magic today. Came across some hippies who had a whole spread for us with a donation. We both made our own fresh squeezed orange juice. (I may talk a lot about their O.j, I am slightly obsessed.)
Total miles walked was 14.2. Total trail miles was 11.4.
We are staying in a nice place with 10 people to the room. Everyone was asleep by 9 pm.
      We are both exhausted.

      Via de la Plata

      19 oktober 2022, Spanje ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

After a short stroll I moseyed in to Astorga, which has been a Christian centre in Spain since the time of the apostles and became a Roman stronghold as well. Astorga is where the Camino Frances joins the Via de la Plata, otherwise known as the Roman Road which is now a popular alternate Camino route. Astorga is also where many Spanish start their Camino.

As soon as I had climbed a few steps into the old town I was greeted with a gorgeous manicured park set at the top of the old city walls. These walls were originally built by the Romans though they have been raised and rebuilt in the Middle Ages and only small parts of the Roman wall remain at the base. The wall was 2.2km long, 4-5m thick and enclosed an area of 26 hectares although not all of it remains today.

I decided on an extra short walk today so I could explore Astorga and also stay out of the rain which bucketed down from lunch time. Luckily I was busy exploring the Baroque Cathedral and the 19th century (virtually modern) Bishops Palace built by the famous Spanish architect Gaudi. Most photos are almost all of the Palace with only a cloister shot from inside the Cathedral and a couple of external shots with the palace and cathedral which are next to each other. After siesta, if there's a break in the rain, I will head out to find some famous Astorga chocolate.

Tonight I'm back in a hostel although it's a bit special as there are no bunk beds and the owner is Brazilian and so is the pilgrim dinner tonight. I've chosen the bed next to the only opening window as I find I'm very partial to fresh air when I'm sleeping in a room with twelve other people.

Back in the mountains yayy 🥰

      24 oktober 2023, Spanje

One of the coolest morning skies so far, photos did not do justice! Missed scrambling up rocky inclines even if you have to try not to break your angle with every step, and worth it for the AMAZE views from the albergue at the lil village at the top when the clouds cleared enough to actually see them lolMeer informatie

      Astorga

      13 augustus 2022, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

No one told me this is a dangerous city. The chocolate stores are no joke! I can't go browsing because I get the urge of sampling everything and that's just not possible 😫
The City isn't too big, and being Saturday afternoon, it was pretty quiet when I walked around. I'm sure it will get buzzing later.Meer informatie

      Astorga

      19 oktober 2022, Spanje ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

We had our second consecutive day off today. We saw everything we wanted too in León, so we slept in, had a late breakfast, then hopped a bus to Astorga.

The bus system in Spain seems to be very nice. Both of our bus trip were on time. Both were nice "Tour Buses", no junky Greyhound buses here! The routes included quick stops in the center of every town along the way. And the city bus stations are centrally located in the cities. Two thumbs up!

Upon hitting Astorga, first priority was buy a couple of nice rain ponchos, as the 10-day forecast looks very wet as we head into the first mountain ridge.

Next was a visit to a small church, then a tour of the Cathedral here. A late afternoon rest break, was followed by a visit to the Guadi Palace & Museum.

      Astorga to Foncebadon

      18 april, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

I'm rarely still around late enough to know (BRAG) but I think the blasting chants after 7.30 might not just be a Roncesvalles thing? Astorga was certainly keen on it today. In what I'm sure is an innocent mistake, I left without my freezer brick because SOMEONE TOOK IT but it doesn't matter, I'm close enough to my last dose it can be at room temp.

Been a total break-slut today - coffee, orange juice and toast, coke, lunch.
I honestly don't mind though, I think taking my time on the walk is part of adjusting to the pace and routine. Getting in at 2 versus 4 makes no difference. Rolled in at 4.30pm after walking up a hill we continue to climb tomorrow to reach the highest point of the whole Camino. I can't wait to see the sunrise from here in the morning.

Some homework I've done tonight to satisfy questions raised when walking:

      1. Earwax DOES hold DNA but you have to get it within 30 days.

      2. The tallest cow on record is 6'3 and quite frankly I saw one a few weeks ago that could take that, I should write to them.

      Retour à l'âme du chemin

      25 mei 2023, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C
