      Rest. Repeat.

      6. juni, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

After crossing the halfway point in Sahagun it was time to go to light speed, and then to zero speed for several days. We departed Sahagun by train taking us to the wonderful city of Leon, a place vibrant with hundreds of tapas bars charming piazza's, shopping, history, cathedrals and all the things you could expect on a historic Spanish city along the Camino.

We rented an apartment and rested for 3 days in a place where we could scramble eggs, dine at our own table and wash laundry over and over again if we wanted to. We could sleep in and not have to have our bags downstairs before 8:00 a.m. and hitting the trail early everyday. It was just what the Camino doctor ordered!

I was not quite ready to walk again when it was time to depart yesterday, so I took a bus to Astorga and now I'm staying in the most beautiful place I've ever been on the entire Camino, the Casa de Tepa. I am sleeping in an old attic. My favorite! (Carrie😂)

When I arrived, I met the proprietor, Juan, an old man originally from Madrid, but for many years he spends his summers here sharing this 18th century residence with travelers. In the reception, he proudly displays his pilgrim credential and compostelo from his Camino de Santiago in 1965. He has been very kind, he visits me when I sit in the garden and tells I am magical, he loves me, and I can stay here for one year. ❤️

I thanked him and told him I wish I could, and I will return to this special place one day. I am happy to have another day of rest here now, as tomorrow we will be back on the road again for the final 250 k to Santiago in 13 days with no more time for breaks.

There have been many friends we have met who have had to stop walking or go home, due to injury or homesickness or other circumstances. It is sad to lose touch with each other, and happy when you arrive in a new place and see familiar faces. The hugs and smiles happen during these moments.

The Camino is different for everyone and it is something you cannot control. I think pausing on the Camino is the perfect thing in order to live a few days in the life of these places that were made to support the pilgrims that are passing through. It is refreshing to not just move onward like a soldier marching across the land, but to stop, and linger and smell the roses.

D24- Reliegos to Leon 25 km

      6. juni, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

461.3 km (286.6 miles) walked so far. 305.7km (190 miles) to go.
The Meseta today was what we expected, long, dry and very hot. We set off early to get a head start before it heated up. We stopped for coffee at the first town, Mansilla de las Mulas, 5.6km into our walk. We then walked for a long hot 10.6km with no breeze and no shade. We went through the town of Villamores de Mansilla after another 4.8km and Puente de la Villarente was which was only another 1.7km further on after that. We aimed to take a break at Arcahueja but when we got there nothing was open so we ended up having a coffee and a cold drink at Puente de Castro. We didn’t eat there as the food didn’t look very appetising. Finally we were walking through the streets of Leon with Chris and Kate and arrived at the Catedral de Santa Maria Leon. We sat in the square and had coffee and cakes and admired the beauty of the magnificent cathedral in front of us. Later that evening we met up with Simon, Chris, Kate, John and Justin and we went on a tapas and wine then ended up having pizza at a nearby bar. It was Simon’s birthday and it was lovely that we could celebrate in such a beautiful city.Les mer

Day 30 Down the mountain to Triacastelo

      5. juni, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

23k down the mountain to Tricastelo started at the peak, above the clouds, then in the foggy clouds, then below the clouds, then above! Cows came up the road again today as we were going down the road. They get so close! This walnut tree is 800 years old. Dinner with friends. Met up with our Tazmanian friends Annie and Kay, who we had not seen in a while, since they are nursing knee problems. Tomorrow is a turning point since we are heading to the last 100k of the Camino de Santiago. This portion of the Camino is very popular. Many people walk this distance from Sarria into Santiago because it is the least amount required to receive a compostella at the cathedral. People say it is crowded and noisy, unlike the peaceful and quiet 690k we have walked so far.Les mer

      First day on the meseta

      6. juni, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Which for those of you who don't know, is the enormous plateau that covers most of central Spain, from La Mancha south of Madrid to the mountains just north of us here. In my experience it is either baking hot like today or very cold in Winter.
As there has been so much rain the poppies, thistles and other wild flowers are stunning.
We are staying in a hostel Fiona knows from last year in a sleepy village that has the good fortune to sit on the path to Santiago, and is making the most of it by catering to pilgrims. There's a man in a small shop across the road selling tiny shampoos, suncreams, blister stuff, and food in small packets as well as making nice sandwiches.

    • Dag 31

We started early to climb up through the Cantovrios Mountains before the heat of the day. As we came through the village of La Laguna de Castilla while photographing some penned cows, the owners opened the gate, and the cows rushed into the street and past us to get to their pasture Yikes, they are huge, and these horns are pointy and long! When we arrived at the town of O'Cebreiro, we were greeted by the sounds of a bagpiper. We are officially in the region of Galicia now. We met up with 3 members of our Camino family, people we started with in France 4 weeks ago. Here is a graph of our downhill tomorrow.Les mer

Small towns on the Meseta (plateau)

      3. juni, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

I have been walking through endless fields of wheat and barley. Some people don't like the Meseta, but I find it to be beautiful. These have been short segments for me, about 6 miles each day. Hontanas has a nice spring, with pools for soaking feet. There were also volunteers giving free food massages. Just before Castrojeriz are the ruins of the San Anton monastery. The Camino passes through the main arch. There is a functioning albergue there, which has no electricity or hot water.

My next stop was Castrojeriz, which has the ruins of a hilltop fortress. It's a very long village, over a mile long and the roads wind all around, with many stone steps connecting them.

Tonight I'm in the village of Itero de la Vega, population 190. I got a private room, as I didn't sleep well at the last albergue. The hosts are from Ukraine and the evening meal was Ukrainian food. It was the best meal I've had, so far.

    • Dag 24–25

437km (271.5miles) walked so far, 330km (205 miles) to go.
Long day today, 31km mostly through farmland on designated paths. Some tracks parallel to the road but not much traffic. Only two coffee stops today, first one at the 10km mark, Bercianos del Real Camino, second stop after 17.2km, El Burgo Ranero. We then had 12.7km to Reliegos where we were staying for the night. Started off quite cool in the morning but soon warmed up and was quite hot by the time we got to town. Lots of pollen flying through the air and we have all had trouble with allergies. Not so many poppies today but lots of other wild flowers.Les mer

      Not walking day

      5. juni, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Rest day in Burgos, and a lie in.
Then a lovely veggie cafe breakfast. We spent the morning in the cathedral and I'm off to the musuem shortly, via the ice cream shop.
There are plenty of pictures of Burgos cathedral out there as its a spectaculrly oppulent gothic pile, monument to rich families as much as a place of worship.
Here are a few of the patterns I noticed.

      Day 26 walking!

      4. juni, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

We left our Albergue this morning to finish the last few Km to the top of the mountain, and passed from Castilla y León into Galicia. We reached the top in the cool of the morning, and were greeted by local playing the bagpipes which was unexpected but rather nice. At the top we had stunning views of mountains in all directions. We were above the morning mist (or low cloud?) and so the mountain tops looked like they were floating on the mist, not sure the photos do it justice! The village at the top O’Cebreiro, had old cobbled streets and building including thatched roofs and had artisan shops. Last night we were at 1,150m altitude and the top is 1,330m. The way then took us through a village and to another peak (San Roque) at 1,270m, again just stunning panoramic views! The way meandered and took us to yet another peak Alto do Poie at 1,335m which was quite an arduous climb! But what goes up must come down and we started the slow descent down to Triacastela at 675m. The path took us through farming villages and past munching or dozing cows with cow bells, and lots of alpine meadows and wild flowers including bluebells, obviously flowering later due to the altitude, and giant slugs! The way also took us past an 800 year old chestnut tree with lots twists and turns, very gnarled.
So last night we were in bunks and again tonight in Albergue Horta de Able. It was only (?!) 23 Km today but the inclines made it hard work!

      Burgos

      4. juni, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

We are in Burgos, 12 days and about 250km walked. Today's walk from the lovely village of Atapuerca, one of many being revived by camino tourism, was 20km. Over a misty hill and down as the sun burnt off the mist, for a lovely breakfast stop. The walk from there to Burgos along a river seemed interminable as my head had already arrived. Fiona knew of a spectacular approach through the arch to the cathedral square which is very beautiful. We had a properly veggie lunch at last, and found some supplies for my 5 a day attempts. It is nice being able to eat loads of food without thinking about calories as we burn so much e nergy walking. We are staying in a 1903 hotel, faded grandeur, still beautiful with a lobby that looks frozen in time.
I have been relaxing this afternoon, and we met up with Bernie, Linda and David for supper as they are going on tomorrow so we may not see them again. It's sad saying goodbye to lovely people.
