      1st day complete!

      20 juni 2022, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

The heat wave has definitely broken. It was 10°C when we left León this morning. Lots of liquid sunshine. But still great to be back on the Camino!

Not as many pilgrims as I expected to see. Here at Tio Pepe in Villar de Mazarife is very quiet.Meer informatie

      Villares de Orbigo (16km / 495.5km)

      19 mei 2023, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C

Today was one of our best walks. Everything just seemed to be right. A lovely cold, crisp morning. The sun rises directly behind us so the lighting in the early morning is stunning. The beginning of the walk was dead straight - not even a hint of a curve for 6.5km!
While we have walked through beautiful farmlands, today was really the first time we saw “farming” activity. There were actually people in the fields, tractors ploughing, spraying, planting. The irrigation systems were also full with strong running water.
The towns were different to the others - there were strong signs of life, people living and working in the area. The farms also seemed different. Smaller and not so “perfect”. It seemed like there might be privately owned and operated whereas the others looked more business like. The towns also had thriving agricultural service businesses. There was just no doubting this was an agricultural centre.
We walked past a large cheese factory, fertiliser sellers and countless equipment suppliers and mechanics.
It was all so uplifting after seeing towns that had basically died due to mechanisation.
We’ve shown pictures of the irrigation before but today it all came to life so we show more. In fact, todays pictures are mostly farming and irrigation!
The non farming highlight was “Puente de Orbigo” (The bridge over the river Orbigo). It is a bridge and a long raised road into Hospital de Orbigo which was a lovely town and we were really tempted to stop here but had a reservation in the next village, Villares de Orbigo. We seem to be the only pilgrims in town as there is a major “horse” event in town tomorrow - a gymkhana we think. So, a very quiet evening!

      Day 21 walking!

      30 mei, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

We started the walk in relatively nice temperature and were welcomed by the sound of a cuckoo as we started down a quiet country road. There were ditches on either side with water and lots croaking frogs! They seem to have an irrigation system rigged up to water the fields, perhaps from the snow-topped mountains that we’re walking towards! We passed by agricultural land and a farmer ploughing his field with a stork taking advantage of the overturned soil behind the tractor!
We stopped for refreshments in Villavante and either there, or en route encountered many of the other Peregrinos from our Albergue!
We also sort lots of nesting storks en route and can’t help by photograph them!
We walked into historic Hospital de Orbigo across very old long bridge and under lots of unusual flags. It transpires that the town is hosting a jousting tournament this weekend and the flags all had heraldic symbols and we walked past the field for the event. We stopped here for lunch and it was starting to get very hot, and as we had walked about 17km, I elected to get the bus to our next destination while Fiona continued to walk. Think it got up to about 27 degrees …. bit too hot for walking comfortably…. but my toe seems ok so far 🤞
Tonight we’re in private room (hooray!) in Hostal Juli in San Justo de La vega, about 3.5 Km before Astorga, after which we head into a mountainous area. We left the Meseta behind several days ago and so far the way has just been undulating, but it will get steeper again very soon!

      Mind

      3 augustus 2022, Spanje ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

I didn’t write much yesterday. I was done. Not physically, I feel absolutely fine, and not emotionally, I am happy as can be, but mentally.

The Meseta ends tomorrow, first over lightly rolling hills, then steeply up and down into Ponferrada. The past week from Burgos, through endless wheat and sunflower fields, has given me a chance to think and clear my mind, just as Navarra and La Rioja shaped my body. Those final 300 to Santiago will be in service of the soul, and yes, there will very likely be tears.

I can’t believe how fast the past 200 went by, deep in thought, plodding along the roads and over dirt tracks. I hope the next 200 will feel longer, I don’t want this to end.

      Hospital de Orbigo

      19 augustus 2022, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

The longer option wasn’t as nice as I thought- several tines I walked just straight and alone for 2-3 h with no house at all! Puhh- just saw a group of 4 Germans who gave up 2 villages earlier, as it was so hot today! But after 36 Km and 7.5 h I arrived in Hospital de Orbigo, which is really nice! A lot of nice Albergues- I chose one where Pilgrims can paint for free! The amazing results are attached!Meer informatie

      Hospital de Óbrigos

      15 oktober 2023, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

We had a short day today, only 15 km! We started where we left off yesterday at Villar de Mazarife. We stayed in a neighboring town and taxied back to where we stopped yesterday.

It was expected to rain around 4:00 but actually started raining around 12:30 while we were still walking. But then we got to where we were headed fairly quickly so we only ended up hiking in ponchos for less than an hour.

Today we learned a bit about water towers. The shape of water towers is different here, with many being shaped like funnels. Some are cylindrical or squared off but none are the shape of water towers in the US.

When we arrived here our German friend Annette told us that the bridge into town is over a thousand years old and that they used to joust on the fields near the bridge. And when we arrived, as it is Sunday, there were people playing traditional music and doing traditional dances which was cool to watch!

We’re chilling out in our room now until dinner at 6:30. I think we’re the only guests here! It’s Sunday and rainy so there’s not much to do. Tomorrow we’re going to Astorga and I’m hoping to get new shoes as mine are all beaten up and have lost their support around the heel which is giving me sore feet.

Lions, and Tigers, and No Beds! Oh My!

      4 juli 2023, Spanje ⋅ 🌙 54 °F

Let’s start with the positive: thank you God for providing two beds for us last night… at 7pm!

The day started out great. Last dialysis in Leon went smoothly and Sean enjoyed one last Kevin Bacon burger on the way out of town.

Our plan was to get to the edge of Leon as we have an extra day before Astorga. Alas, no albergues or hotels before leaving Leon. So we walked to the next village. Two hostels closed, one albergue closed, another one full, and the only hotel in town full!

So we went on to the next village where the first albergue we found was closed on Mondays! Wandered around A LOT before finally finding our night’s respite. We are now so far ahead of schedule it’s not even funny. Dialysis in Astorga is scheduled for Friday. We might dilly dally or simply get there early and explore a bit.

Oh, and Sean officially had his worst meal of the Camino. So he’s got that out of the way!

On the Camino, as in life, it pays to be flexible!

      Leon to Villar de Mazarife

      6 mei, Spanje ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Today’s walk was a “short” 21k (13 miles) and our first hint of solid Spring weather ☀️ Plenty of sunshine and highs in the mid-60’s. We had the option to take the traditional Camino route along the busy highway, or opt for a few kilometers more and take the green/alternative route, so we opted for door #2. The route took us along a quiet country road for most of the day, with plenty of Spring wildflowers 🌺🌸🌼and birdsong 🪶 to occupy our time. Also, fresh lavender, rosemary & thyme 🍃 to pick & smell along the way! Our albergue for the evening had a very nice home-cooked communal meal of paella for roughly 40 pilgrims. 🥾🇪🇸Meer informatie

      To Villar de Mazorife

      26 september 2023, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

      September 26

It was so hard to slip out of the comfy king bed this morning and pack up to leave the hotel. 🙁 We were wishing we had planned a rest day, but now that we have walked to Villar de Mazorife, we’re happy we continued walking.

We had to walk for about four miles to finally get out of the main part of the city. Then, we took a variant in the route to stay away from the busy highway. It was much more peaceful. For most of the walk Sue, from Florida, joined us. It always makes the time go faster when you’re talking to someone.

The albergue where we are staying prepared a 4 course dinner for everyone tonight - fresh salad, gazpacho with bread, paella made and served by Pepe, and then crepes with fresh apricot and drizzled chocolate. 😋😋😋

Henrick, who we hadn’t seen for a long time, is staying here as well, so we were able to catch up with what he’s been up to since we last saw him. He shared that he and Tom (guy from Ireland we had also met) took a taxi from Burgos to where they filmed the climax of Clint Eastwood’s The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Sad Hill Cemetery. 😂 Tom had told us quite long ago he wanted to do that, so we were glad they were able to make it happen.

      Tonight’s struggles:

Sleeping in a bed that has a hump in the middle and is trying to roll us off the sides.

And…Trying to ignore the sound of someone getting sick in the room next door. Oh my goodness!! 😳🤢😳

Today was 13.7 miles. Tomorrow, we have a shorter walk to Hospital de Orbigo at 10 miles.

      71. Wandertag

      9 juni 2023, Spanje ⋅ 🌧 20 °C
