      57. Wandertag

      May 24, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

      May 26, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

I was going to joke about something like where is pasta...but then we came upon this donation food stand
I was OK (I been packing fruit and hard-boiled eggs for the last 2 days) but lots of folks were wholeheartedly thanking the senorita for being thereRead more

      The Sacred and the Profane

      September 19, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

The Way is always present and apparent if I just know where to look. And if I get lost it's ok to ask for directions, repent and return...
      We're all on the Way
      All ways converge into One

I smell like a walking advertisement for the Spanish version of Tide. This from an avowed unscented laundry soap user at home. But I can't tell you what it means to have someone wash my clothes for me, that doesn't even happen at home! I'm willing to smell like laundry detergent rather than rancid sweat!Read more

      Third day walking!

      May 11 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

After very disturbed night (lots of snoring!) we set off about 8 in lovely weather and down from the hilltop village. Again we passed by lush fields and villages with lovely churches. It was 25 degrees and the rucksacks make us hot and work harder! We stopped for tea and coffee of course and lunch in Estella, which has lovely old town with impressive churches. In some places the way was very steep, in others more undulating. One intriguing thing was passing the wine fountain… it’s a tradition to drink a little wine as you pass, I duly obliged! But we made it to our welcoming Albergue in Axqueta after 24.5 Km! And it’s nice not to have bunk beds 😊
It’s a small Albergue and we had friendly communal supper with people from Germany, France, Italy and Finland. We’ve also so far chatted to folk from Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand and even good old Blighty!

      To Estella

      September 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

There was more to Puenta la Reina than we realized but had to make do with seeing it on our way out of town. MB and I enjoyed walking most of today's stage chatting with the aforementioned Nancy from L.A., and we continued to run into other familiar faces (like Patty and Sue from Canada). We were so chatty we missed a turn but a kind Italian pilgrim got our attention and redirected us.

The day's walk went through fields and vineyards and was fairly gentle. Still, after 14+ miles to Estella--then another mile to our hotel--my feet were really aching and we were drenched from sweat and rain and bordering on hangry. As usual, by the time we cleaned up and sat down at the restaurant adjoining our hotel, the kitchen was closed, not to reopen till 8:30 pm!

Two other pilgrims staying here were in the same boat so we teamed up with Gayle (Raleigh) and David (somewhere near Leeds) and taxied down to the bottom of town to eat at Bar Le Monde. All was fabulous till we learned there were no taxis to take us home. But hey--what's another mile uphill in sandals?

One highlight: our hotel offered to do our laundry for us. One lowlight: the dryers here don't really do the job. So we've turned every corner of our room into a drying rack hoping we wont have to pack damp clothes in the morning.

Estella is not quite as picturesque--larger and more modern. That + rain = fewer pics.

      Puente la Reina to Estella

      May 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

23.5 km today. Walked most of the day with Aleta. Stopped at Mañeru for brekkie after an hour and had the usual coffee and tortilla combo. Stopped for a drink at Villatuerta later.
Really cold wind today and the rain almost came on but I continue to be really lucky with the weather.
I've started seeing fields of grapevines.... that's going to increase in the next few days as I reach La Absolutely freezin tonight and I've got shorts and sandals on. Found a launderette (oh no, not the launderette) and gave most of my gear a good wash. Los Arcos tomorrow 😊

Puente la Reina to Estella - part one

      March 31 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

I think I'm actually turning into Winnie the Pooh. Or maybe I always have been, and I'm just leaning into my truth? I started the day by talking to some of my Piglets and Roos and Tiggers (see, this works), who are at a derby tournament in Sydney which is making me miss them as that's always a great time. Then I had a walk in the woods and a think think think. All I could do to not tap my head with my paw. I did have pants on but that's only because it's going to rain.

The pants were probably for the best actually, mud central again. It's this really thick, really slippery clay style stuff. At one point I knew I was going down and surprised myself by letting out a strangled CRIPES as I sunk my knee into the bog. Cripes? Grow up. The Japanese couple ahead of me helpfully pointed out that they had sticks and I didn't, we all had a good laugh and I tried not to kick them.

The hilltop village of Cirauqui was about 8km into the day and stunning. I risked going off the signed way to explore it, and was rewarded by cats, and a nice coffee, and a toilet. I'm beginning to suspect those loos in Roncesvalles are diverting a water source because with the NOTABLE exception of them every other flush is insipid at best. There's the travel insights you came for.

      Day 6 Estella

      April 16 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Our new albergue last night had only 7 people so it was nice and quiet. The surprise breakfast let us start our 24km walk early so it was nice checking in today at 2pm. A pretty uneventful day except for Cirauqui, a lovely medieval village up on a hill. Check out those old grapevines. Must be a sight to see in Sept.
Bros, I know where the Oak Island path comes from....Spain 🤣

Day 4 Jasmine on the way to Estrella

      June 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Our walk today was short one, roughly 14 kilometers. We passed by a wall that was covered in jasmine. What a treat for the senses. Today's walk started down hill form Casa Maralotx and then onto an old Roman road that started just outside of town. Along the way, there was a table with food and drinks for pilgrims with a box for donations.

We caught up to Joanne and Paul just before entering Estella. They were continuing to the next town up. The town here is in a steep river valley , and all the sights to see are on hills, and we're done with hills today! After walking around a bit, we had dinner in town

Dinner itself was fun. We ate with Kim, a mom and her teenage son from California, who we had run into before as well as their friend Laura, who had also stayed at Casa Maralotx. We stayed in the Capuchin Monastery in Estella, and it was clean and quiet, but there was not even a vending machine.

      Tag 7 Cirauqui

      September 14, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C
