      Mesquita

      Als je in Cordoba bent, moet je de Mesquita moskee gezien hebben. Een mooi indrukwekkend bouwwerk. Begonnen als een moskee en tweemaal flink uitgebreid. Daarna hebben de katholieken er nog een kerk opgezet. De toren kan ook beklommen worden, maar in verband met de hitte hebben we daar van afgezien.Baca lagi

      Lovely day in Córdoba

      It is my birthday and has been an excellent day, and it hasn’t finished yet. We met Omnia for a leisurely breakfast around 8.30 in the little bakery attached to, but not part of, the hotel. Then we set off walking, via the tourist info which gave us a better map, and we discovered that our Mesquita tickets also qualify us for entrance to many churches dotted around the town. And it doesn’t have to be today…perfect.

      There are many little narrow streets, and flowers and courtyards, so pretty. We wandered down to the river, and walked over the Roman bridge and up the tower at the end, which is a museum plus a lovely view from the not very high top. We then walked through the old Jewish area, which was quite crowded - round the bridge, the Jewish quarter, the Mesquita and the alcazar is where the hordes go, but still not quite as confronting as Seville and Granada. And the weather remains kind - the same cool to start, and never getting too hot…

      Stopped for refreshments- croquetas - this time with prawn and spinach - and then went to the Mesquita for our 2pm time slot…we had bought tickets online, but of course found out today that for this we could have got them on the spot!! Oh well…it was easy. And very popular…many many people, but this is such a vast area it doesn’t feel too crowded. It was built as a huge mosque in 788 AD with many columns, and when the Christians overthrew the Arabs they turned it into a huge cathedral in the 1200s. It is an extraordinary building, with the columns and lamps like a mosque, then you find a gothic cathedral structure all amongst it. Fortunately they kept a lot the beautiful Islamic decoration…it is a huge area, and there are chapels all around the edge. It is hard to describe, and impossible to take photos that capture the whole, but of course we all attempt to.

      After that, Omnia had her own wander looking at the very interesting shops and streets, and we did our own wander, ending up with downtime back at hotel. Getting ready for birthday evening!

      …Now just, and it’s after 11..late! But we had a remarkable evening. First we went to the concert we had seen a notice about at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica - featuring saxophonists. So we thought might be fun…it was free, and obviously was students practising their performing… but they were good…it went for a little over an hour, and at first I was happy, but not enthralled, but then it pepped up, and they did a version of the Tchaikovsky serenade for strings arranged for 11 saxophones, some Manuel de Falla ending with the ritual fire dance, and an encore of a Brahms Hungarian dance!! Didn’t think I’d ever hear them played by saxophonists! They were good, and got riotous applause from (I think) fellow students…Amr took a short video of the encore - (not forbidden at this sort of concert!) it isn’t in focus, but you can get a sense of the fun!

      Then we went to a restaurant where we had booked for 9.30. Really good…not posh, but obviously popular and delicious food. At that hour it was still busy, but tourists had left by then…more people walked in after us…no problem, kitchen still busy. Lovely birthday evening!      Baca lagi

      Last day in Córdoba and the south

      17 Mei, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

      Another lovely day. We met Omnia at 9, had breakfast and headed off towards the Jewish quarter again, hoping to beat the crowds in the narrow streets…and we did..very successful - we found the synagogue which is hard when tour groups are blocking the way, very old and interesting - only one of the 3 synagogues left in Spain. Then we went to the Alcázar of the Christian kings…another big fortress, but not Arabic style. And no long queue to get in, though quite a lot of people and school groups, and we got in free - being jubilados- retired!! It was a good visit, and a tower to climb with great views (and not so high that it was a huge effort to climb). Then that led on to the alcazar gardens which were almost the highlight. Beautifully laid out, the ubiquitous orange trees, sculpted cypresses, and others - flowers in bloom, and importantly the fountains were founting - the look of them and the tinkling of the water is such a pleasure - calming and beautiful. Then visited the Khalifa baths (also free jubilados)…ruins from the Islamic period.

      So a lovely morning, and we stopped for bocadillos and coffee/colacao and a break. Then back on the trail to wander some more and find interesting places. Omnia parted from us after a while to do her own things, and Amr and I pursued the churches listed as good to visit and on the list with the Mesquita ticket…but only found one open, a lovely one, but after that they all seemed to be having a siesta…but we had fun wandering in different streets from our usual circuit, and where normal Cordoba residents seemed to be living and having their normal lives….stopped for another refreshment and back in room for downtime.

      Still perfect weather, doesn’t get too hot. Clouds floating around, but no imminent rain and mostly sunny. Amr is suffering terribly from spring allergies which is driving him mad with an annoying cough and runny nose and we hope this will improve tomorrow when we go to Madrid. It has only been since we came south, and this time last year he was fine in Madrid…so here’s hoping. Meeting Omnia at 7 for our last dinner here, then get a train late tomorrow morning back to Madrid.

      …I had published, but just have to add that we had the most perfect dinner! Amr and I had seen areas off the tourist track which looked fun and when we went there at about 7.30 all was a bit quiet, but we decided to sit at one place and try…and had a drink and asked for menu and it was different from the usual things we had kept having…still Spanish style but with little twists…Spanish fusion? Anyway, it was amazing, and such a lovely end to our Córdoba experience…by the time we left, people were queuing up and waiting for us to pay and leave…such luck and a perfect evening!       Noch ein Tag in Cordoba

      Gestern gab es ordentlich Regen und Sturm. Also schön zu Hause geblieben und das Wetter ausgesessen. Heute Nachmittag ging es aber wieder. Ein wenig Wolken, ein wenig Sonne, also auf nach Cordoba. Diesmal besuchen wir den Alcacer von Cordoba. Das ist sehr sehenswert. Dazu werden wir noch Zeuge einer andalusischen Dressurveranstaltung. Tolle Bilder garantiert. Zur Belohnung gibt es noch ein paar Tapas und zurück geht es.Baca lagi

      Cordoba, Spain

      The origins of Cordoba are lost in the mists of time. Its position by the river and the fertile farming land of the Campiña made it a perfect place for the first prehistoric settlements. However, it was not until the late Bronze Age (8th/9th century B.C.) when the first settlement was established. After the arrival of the Phoenicians and Greeks on the peninsula, the city became known as an important mining and commercial centre, since the River Guadalquivir was then navigable as far as Cordoba. This facilitated the spread of artistic and commercial products and made for easier communication with the main cities of the period. Once the romans left the Visigoths frequented the area for a few centuries later yielding to the Moors. The Moors occupied Cordoba for many centuries up until the 15th when the Spanish reconquista took place. Cordoba today is bustling with tourism and life. It is a beautiful clash of cultures and has numerous historic buildings and monuments that are both grand and beautiful regardless of culture. The Mosque Cathedral of Granada was among one of the most beautiful religious structures Dave and I have seen.Baca lagi

      Alcazar of Christian Monarchs, Cordoba

      Alcazar of the Christian Monarchs (or just the Alcazar) in Cordoba was another beautiful royal residence in Spain. It was one of the residences of Isabella and Ferdinand. In fact, Christopher Columbus had his first audience with the royals at this very site.

      The Alcazar started as Visgoth fortress before the Moors conquered this area. I couldn't find many dates regarding the site until 1328. At that time Cordoba was back under Castilian control and King Alfonso XI ordered construction (or reconstruction) of the fortress.

      In 1482, Isabella and Ferdinand turned the fortress into a tribunal of the Spanish Inquisition and stayed that way for three centuries. Around 1486 Christopher Columbus had his first audience with Isabella and Ferdinand here.

      The Alcazar then became a garrison for Napoleon Bonaparte' s troops in 1810 when they occupied Spain. In 1821 it became a prison (nice place to be held captive by today's standards). It didn't become a tourist attraction until the 1950s.      Baca lagi

      Cordoba

      Gestern war “Super Bowl” Tag. Wir haben dieses größte Sporterlebnis der Welt in all seiner Dramatik in einer Aufzeichnung verfolgt. Wenige Sekunden vor Ende der Verlängerung haben die Kansas City Chiefs mit 25:22 gegen die San Francisco 49ers gewonnen. Die Spannung war kaum zu überbieten👍

      Heute widmen wir uns ganz der schönen Stadt Cordoba, einst eine römische Stadt und im Mittelalter ein bedeutendes Zentrum des Islams.

      Die Puerta Sevilla bietet einen Zugang zum angenehmen Viertel San Basilio in der Umgebung der Alcázar Viejo.

      Die Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba ist eines der wichtigsten Denkmäler der Welt, um die historische Beziehung zwischen Christentum und Islam zu verstehen. Dieser Tempel fungierte gleichzeitig als Moschee und Basilika. Eintrittskarten für den Besuch des Inneren können im voraus online gekauft werden und kosten mindestens 11 €. Für uns ist das ein Ärgernis. Anstatt die Menschen mit offenen Armen in der Kirche zu empfangen, werden sie hier erst noch richtig zur Kasse gebeten. Wir werden keinen Eintritt bezahlen, um ein sog. Gotteshaus zu betreten, auch hier nicht. 😁

      Die Plaza de Abades befindet sich am Ende der Martínez-Rücker-Straße, in die auf der einen Seite die Alfayate und auf der anderen die Portería de Santa Clara und die Zapatería Vieja münden. 

      Wer über die römische Brücke zur Moschee-Kathedrale möchte, durchschreitet unweigerlich den Triumphbogen  “Arco del Triunfo”. 

      Der Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos ist eines der Wahrzeichen Córdobas. Im 8. Jahrhundert als Residenz für den Kalifen von Córdoba errichtet, erlangte er vor allem im Mittelalter Bedeutung, weil hier die katholischen Könige Ferdinand und Isabella acht Jahre lang residierten. Der Alcázar ist eine Mischung aus imposanter Festung und hoheitlichem Palast. 

      Wir erreichen schließlich noch den “Torre de Guadalcabrillas”. 

      Cordoba ist eine geschichtsträchtige Stadt. Die Altstadt ist großartig. Aber dementsprechend viele Touristen treiben sich hier herum. Aber dennoch: unbedingt empfehlenswert 👍👍👍      Baca lagi

      primera semana

      Hola amigoooos, que tal???? 😎
      Vor genau einer Woche bin ich aufgebrochen, um in 27h mit Flixbus und Bahn nach Cordoba zu gelangen.
      Die Reise begann mit wirklich gemischten Gefühlen. Abschied zu nehmen war extrem schwer, aber ich bin sehr dankbar dafür, so viele Menschen in meinem Leben zu haben, die man vermissen wird 💛
      Heute ist mein fünfter Tag in Cordoba und die trüben Gedanken vom Anfang sind mittlerweile verflogen. Die Stadt ist wirklich wunderschön, vor allem das historische Zentrum hat so einen wunderbaren Flair. Ich gewöhne mich so langsam an den spanischen Rhythmus und stehe immer seltener mittags vor geschlossenen Geschäften (Siesta!!). Es gibt so viel, dass man hier entdecken kann, sodass die to-do-Liste zur Zeit fast endlos erscheint! Montag beginnt die Uni, ich bin gespannt, wie die Vorlesungen hier sein werden und ob ich überhaupt ein Wort verstehen werde 😂
      Alles in allem kann man sagen, dass ich jetzt schon verliebt bin in die Stadt und sehr dankbar für die Möglichkeit bin, hier zu sein.
      Nächste Woche wird es dann neue updates geben, bis dahin, hasta luego!      Baca lagi

      segunda semana

      1. der erste Besuch war da: 2 schöne Tage mit Lina 🧡
      2. Der Blick auf die Stadt vom Turm im Alcazar de los reyes
      3. Der wunderschöne Garten dort 🌺
      4. Frühstück im marokkanischen Cafe
      5. Meine neueste Errungenschaft: eine Ukulele!!
      6.-9. Wanderung zur las ermitas: fast 4h auf- und wieder abwärts, 12km, 30°C. Für die Aussicht würde ich es nochmal machen! ☀️😅
      10.+11.Der erste Tag in der Uni: Mein Prof spricht zum Glück recht langsam, sodass ich einiges sogar verstehen kann 👀 Das beste ist aber das Frühstück für insgesamt 2,80€!!
      12.-14. Pallea-Party!! 🥘
      15. üben, üben, üben...es macht echt soo viel Spaß
      16. Monkey-rock, die Boulder-Halle in Cordoba. Leider etwas schwer zu erreichen, denn die Halle an sich ist sehr cool! 🧗🏼‍♀️      Baca lagi

      Day 1 - Sevilla 😁

      Nous enchaînons voiture, avion puis bus pour enfin arrivé à Séville à 8h30 du matin. Ça pique 🥱
      Nous allons ensuite visiter « el réal Alcázar » et ses magnifiques jardins 🤩! Ça m’a vraiment plu, c’était très beau et la météo était avec nous (grand soleil toute la journée ☀️)!!!
      Après un pique-nique dans le parc, nous allons voir « la Giralda » mais nous n’avons malheureusement pas pu entrer a l’intérieur. C’est un ancien minaret ; après la reconquête de la ville, la mosquée a été convertie en cathédrale et « la Giralda » est devenue le clocher de la cathédrale. Le bâtiment était très joli ❤️
      Ensuite, nous avons pu nous balader seuls dans les ruelles du quartier de Santa Cruz. C’est trop bien que les profs nous laissent des moments de liberté! On se promène, on achète des souvenirs, on mange 🤭, etc…
      Nous rejoignons enfin « Las Setas », des espèces de grands champions construits en bois et en métal qui sont connus pour leur hauteur qui n’était pas prévu par l’architecte.
      Finalement, comme peu de personnes veulent monter sur les structures, ils nous laissent encore 30min de quartier libre 😁! De quoi nous dépenser avant de reprendre le bus durant 2h direction Cordoue, où nous rencontrerons nos familles d’accueil respectives. Notre hôte s’appelle Marina, elle est très gentille et malgré la forte odeur de cigarette dans l’appartement nous nous y plaisons beaucoup !      Baca lagi
